Liberty's Edge

Think they'll bring back Dark Sun?

The Exchange

I'm not rising to this blatant time-waster thread.

Oh damn, I just have.

Just between you and me, a little bird told me Dark Sun will be the new default setting. This is a welcome change for a lot of us that have been (no pun intended) dying for an overhaul of the 'dying of thirst' rules. And we can all breathe a sigh of relief at the conclusion of the Loincloth Ban.

The Exchange

True - a loincloth really lets the air circulate. They have been sorely missed - quite literally.

Dark who? What sun?

Oh, it's this uh....game world I'm makin up. Yeah that's the ticket.

Bald guys, no orcs, Road Warrior meets Conan the Barbarian. That kinda dealy-o. I'm gonna get that BROM guy to draw up some paintins.

Whaddya think?

somebody on another thread mentioned that Dark Sun would be the new default setting. were they serious? how can you make a nonstandard campaign setting THE standard campaign setting?

Liberty's Edge

Last I heard, 4e. is gonna be "setting neutral."

Liberty's Edge

Meh...this is how internet rumours are born. This thread is where Shub Niggurath spawns its dark young. Cool.

Completely. Also, Birthright and Spelljammer will replace the Realms and Eberron as the supported "non-standard" settings. It's all about bloodpowers and whacky gravity rules, y'all.

Liberty's Edge

Oh, just stop.

Heathansson wrote:

I would be very surprised if they did. I would like it if they did, but I am not holding my breath.

Liberty's Edge

Hey, look...a monkey flew out of my butt.

Might want to have a doctor check that out. It looks serious.

Birthright was really nice until you noticed a few details... like that creation spell giving you the chance to keep some VERY humongous armies going.

Creating was a sphere for just one god tho, the bardic one of binsada.
Oh yes, that plan of world qonquest just got realistic.
72 armies of light and and another 75 medium cavalry to thunder across the lands. This just with the wealth and development levels you start with....

With land conquered, plunder, razed temples and more believers and cash, the armies cannot help but grow. The nearest neighbours would allow for another 210 armies of both...
All this in a world that allowed maybe 12 armies in a realm ;)

Heathansson wrote:

I'm sorry, Heathansson, but somebody asked, seriously, if Dark Sun was going to be the default setting for "4dventure." I couldn't just let it sit there.

I'm sure that's great, but I don't understand a word of it. Sounds like RISK. I mean, I never actually PLAYED Birthright or anything ... and was pretty sure nobody had.

Considering that Dark Sun is mostly fluff, i don't see how hard it would be to convert on your own... for now.

There was some demand, and so it took a few years for the 3.5 version to appear in Dragon (or was it Dungeon)... so I can imagine if enough people demand it sooner than later, then I bet it would show up sooner than later over at D&D Insider (or whatever)... Someone should email the authors of the 3.5 version (or even the original authors!) and nudge, beg and coerce.

i wasn't so much serious as...dumbfounded...that somebody mentioned it on another thread. i agree with heathonsson about internet rumors and whatnot. sort of embarassed i helped perpetrate one...

Liberty's Edge

Aw, hell. I was just joking. #1 there's no way to punctuate sarcasm here, and aww hell #2 I'm just snitty about this 4e. bullcrap anyway...
Don't mind me...

I've hated Darksun since it first came out.

4e is magnificent by comparison. A splendid development in the world of D&D gaming.

The Exchange

Darksun has an Unofficial-official website where the fans are keeping the torch lit, and updated. Check it out, Heathy. I have been using some of the updated monsters in my own campaign, like the Kanks and some of the other big vermin.
The guys and girls at this site will keep it going right through 4E. Save the link to your favorites and Athas is yours.

FH

The Exchange

Here is a link to the PDF of theirs with all the monsters and such. 200ish pages of Athas' beasts. Kanks, Razorwings, half-drakes, muls, they are all here.
Enjoy a nostalgia trip.

Liberty's Edge

Oh, I've seen the Dark Sun site. Thanx, though, fakey.

How can anybody hate Dark Sun?

Dark Sun is badass.
It's 20 times more deserving of adoration than Takasi thinks Eberron is.
You have to fight just to get water to drink.
If you have an actual metal sword you feel lucky.
Then people try to steal your sword...so much for the "Christmas Tree" complaint.

Planescape is cool too. Hmm.....

Liberty's Edge

Oh...and no Drow.

oh yeah.. you kept track of water and food :D
And once you got a nonmagical iron sword, you were king!

------------

Oh yeah and birthrights really really weird thing.
Bloodtheft.. killing someone else blooded you would gain some bloodpower. Nice, huh?
So far so good.
Add in the artifact metal that allowed a MUCH bigger bloodtheft.

Now, what if you breed (your kids get a average bloodvalue), and then steal your kids blood? Isnt that one heck of a fast way into divine levels of bloodpower.. like 300+ ;)

Wenching for fun and profit. Awesome idea for a villain, though.

you had me going until that.

actually i kind of like dark sun, even though i never played it.

and i freaking loved planescape. since it was basically included into the Great Wheel cosmology i'm guessing we'll see more of it in...you know that next thing we're all so eager to speculate about.

Use to play Dark Sun a lot. Every now and then I hint at starting a new game with my group, but they are pretty happy with Faerun/Greyhawk type worlds and if the gamers are happy, I am happy.

I still sneak in my perversion for underpowered heroes, against a harsh world, kind of games via Shadowrun/Mutants and Masterminds/ and of course World of Darkness. I mean come on, a DM's gotta get some loving too.

Wow thanks for the link FH.
I knew this site existed but forgot about it. cool cool cool.

While reading it i tought of something.
in 2nd ed. we started at third lvl just cause the world was so harsh.
the die rolls for char. creation were also 5d4.
but I didnt read this in the 3.5 DS rules.
What do you think ? (off-topic i know :P

Wizards has stated a couple of times the very nebulous statement of "We intend to give support to all campaign settings, eventually." They qualified that by saying some settings will only get support on dndinsider.com, such as in the "dragon" section. The only anything that's been confirmed bookwise is Forgotten Realms.

Dark sun is a longshot though.

I know you're totally joking and it's great but...you know, I've never played a Dark Sun game before, but I really want to. And there were those Dragon/Dungeon issues updating a lot of it to 3.5. Why doesn't one of us DM a Dark Sun pbp at some point?

Heathansson wrote:

No f#**ing way. If Grewyhawk dies with 3.5, then Darksun died with 2.0.

And it has been sorely missed.

You should. I would, but for the fact that I loathe DMing. I would definitely play though.

Genius! I fully vow to vomit forth torrents of insanity (in Dark Sun related materials, anyhow) once the current two PbP's I'm embroiled in cease convulsing spasmodically. Muahahah, I'm already crapping myself with glee over the thought.

Eh. No problem really. They already fixed it in 3rd edition.

You see they just moved all the races and important plot elements--Thrikreen, Half-giants, etc. to Greyhawk along with all the psionic stuff. All the defiler magic is now Necroincarnum. Ta-dah!

So see Darksun isn't gone, it's just moved...
