Following the Announcement from Lone Wolf, Pierce Morgan announce the following about RPGXplorer
We've just received word from Paizo that RPGXplorer CAN SUPPORT PATHFINDER!!!
More details to follow after we discuss this with them at GenCon but most likely it will be free datasets included with your Pathfinder subscription....more to follow after GenCon.
Thanks to Quijenoth we already have the Player's Guide done, expect the first Pathfinder dataset within a very short timeframe.
And if you didn't read the other post we'll also be using Varisia and Sandpoint from the new Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting to demo our Interactive Atlas and Interactive Adventure functionality to demo GM Tools at GenCon!
Thank You Paizo for continuing to provide THE most flexible support for the RPing community.

I've never seen this before. How would a Pathfinder dataset help me? (IE: what would this dataset contain?)
The dataset I have put together (based on information from the Rise of the Runelords Players Guide) has all the information required to create characters for Varisia. This includes the new feats, deity entries (including domains, favored weapons and alignment restrictions), special features relating to the Varisian Races (such as clan choice), and equipment such as the starknife.
You will still need the Player's Guide but will be able to identify characters made for Pathfinder versus those made for other campaigns.
Future Datasets will contain more key information for creating characters as they are released. More than that I cannot say since this is something that needs to be defined in the agreement RPGX has with Paizo which I believe is still in negotiation.

I used to use e-tools, but of course code monkey lost their license like everyone else. I've never used these other tools (RPGxplorer, Hero Labs). Any opinions on which has larger sales (and thus more likely to stick around) ?
btw, the fact that pathfinder will have data avaialble for these tools adds another plus to the product. good call.

Sales figures are probably not available but if you want to know more about the history of the products best way is to check the activity on the forums. Way up the types of posts, check the number of people subscribed to the forums, etc, etc,.
Also try and find out what each company is doing for the near future. I can tell you RPGX GM Tools (abbreviated GMX) has just been announced and a game plan for future SRD support has been outlined. In addition a list of Feature requests from users is being compiled to provide support for the more unusual data entry.

If Paizo published all their adventures in GMX, that would mean that I would purchase and play ONLY Paizo games! Having spent hours and hours converting modules to DM Genie adventures, I know the value of having these done for you! (Actually, I'd probably do the same if games were published in DMG format.)
Also, if all I ran were Paizo games on GMX, I wouldn't even blink at 4e. GMX, like DM Genie, would take care of all the 3.5 "vulgarities" (complexity) and I'd be happy.
You hear that Paizo admins and employees? I would lock myself into the line if you saved me all that work!
Of course, that is assuming GMX actually delivers on 75% of what it promises.
Lets see SCAP, AoW, and even Savage Tide in GMX!
Maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit, since GMX is still under development. Just getting giddy... Good move Paizo!

I've only tried RPGXplorer of the two you listed, and I can't comment on the sales figures...
But I can tell you these things:
RPGXplorer suffers the same "problem" as any other program of it's like.
License. They aren't allowed to include anything not OGL, and users aren't legally allowed to share.
This leaves users left holding the bag having to input data from all of the books. (Bad move WoTC...)
However, RPGXplorer far surpasses all other programs that I have tried in this regard. Once you get the hang of entering data, it is sooooo much easier than any other program. And that isn't saying it is difficult to get the hang of data entry.... But a tutorial (which was in the works, last I checked) would help that a lot.
Also, bear in mind: If you have a lot of "weird" house rules, it may be hard to include them. But there are a handful of knowledgeable and helpful members on their forums that can help you include them.

I managed to get a look at the upcoming features for RPGX and GMX at GenCon and they are worth every penny. They were displaying the Varisia map in GMX, with clickable map notes and double-clicking to get to a city map, double click to get to location maps within the city...Totally awesome. Very neat stuff!!
