Hi,
I am trying to download a pdf file that I just bought. I am currently hitting a max of 30 KB/Sec. I got a a high speed internet access (I usually easilly hit around 120 KB/Sec) is there any particular reasons why my download speed is so low ? I know that Montreal is on the opposite coast but still...
Just wondering.
Thanks

Well...according to the Internet Health Report there is a slowdown somewhere in the works. Either that, or the release of Bloodsworn Vale is causing a slight slowdown on Paizo's end.

Wow,
Lilith, you just gave me a geekgasm. I've been studying in engineering for the last 4 years and nobody told that this kind of ''internet report'' existed. Do you know if this kind of report exist for Canadian companies ?
I finaly got the package so everything is all right. I just wondered if this situation was common or I just got unlucky on my first download.
Thanks

Our warehouse guys are stuffing the bits into the internet pipes as quickly as they can, but those "1"s can be tricky to hang on to.
Seriously, though, we're not seeing any issues here—everything seems to be trundling along at the usual pace.

I have the same issue/problem. It seems to be a recent problem, and seems to be on Paizo's end when trying to download or open a PDF.
I've tried from work (T1 line) and my home (cable line), and both are **incredibly** slow to download/open the PDFs in my Paizo account.
I've recently been on a few other sites accessing/downloading PDFs and they seem fine (quick downloads) from those sites.
Also, I've downloaded other PDFs in my account from Paizo just a few weeks ago and everything was running super-fast and super-smooth at that time... just seems like a recent thing-
Maybe just lots of data going through Piazo pipline at the moment??? not sure... but I do know downloads have been slow for the last week or so.

Vic,
Get them to straighten out the cables. If the cables aren't straight, the 1's tend to get stuck because they're all pointy. 0's should be fine bacause their streamlined.
No need to thank me.

Our traffic is up a bit this week, but all our graphs and widgets are showing fairly normal.
I personally downloaded some PDFs from home a couple of days ago, and it was totally snappy.
On the other hand... we know we haven't got the bandwidth to handle thousands of people downloading Pathfinder PDFs simultaneously, so we'll be fulfilling Pathfinder 1 PDFs from a facility with much greater bandwidth, and we expect to transition all PDF fulfillment to that location in the coming weeks.

That is a funny picture and an even funnier answer :)
Thanks for the fast reply Vic. I was able to download the file so I can't complain. Like I said previously, I was just unlucky for my first try but it will not stop me from doing it again.
As always, an A+ for Paizo's customer service.
Cheers !

People; it's not a truck that you can just dump stuff on! Priceless. Poor man is going to be forever remembered in the annals of the internets (now plural thanks to the same).
Coincidentally, listening to people kvetch about 30k/s makes me feel really, really old. Why, in my day sonny, we had to carry each packet by hand uphill in the snow with no shoes or socks....
Oh, and yes, Paizo hands down has the best staff of any company, anywhere. That's why I buy stuff I don't even like at times.

What's the relationship between the latency on that report and download bandwidth? I ask this out of curiosity and from limited knowledge.

I straightened out all my cables, but my downloads are unchanged in terms of speed. I'm thinking maybe my cables are too long, or too skinny.

It could be your Firewall.
1's are alot more flamable then 0's so if you have your firewall up they have a tendicy to burn up while downloading.
Either turn down the temp of the firewall or you can just turn it off all together
:-p

That is an excellent question filled with answers of pure internet evil.
Downloaders like low bandwidth, gamers like low latency. When you purchase a connection from an ISP, you will pretty much go mad attempting to shop using latency as a guideline, because no one labels their product that way. Some of it depends on your hardware, most of it depends on their hardware, and a bit depends on how well written the protocols are.
Imagine you have a whole box of golf balls and you want to roll them all down a PVC pipe into a bucket (hell, I don't know why, just because, ok, sheesh). If you wanted to save time, you could add another PVC pipe (more bandwidth), and roll TWO golf balls at the same time! Are you now moving twice as fast? What about if you had 100 golf balls and 100 pipes? This is where latency comes in: If you had as many pvc pipes as golf balls, you still have to wait the time it takes the golf ball to roll down the pipe.
If you have 1 big file (say, a Pathfinder .pdf), you want more bandwidth (so you can roll say, a tomato down instead of a golf ball). If you have 1000 little tiny files, you can have all the bandwidth in the world, and you still have to wait the time it takes the golf ball to roll to the end of the tube.

Hehe, thanks mwbeeler.
Ayup. That's how I reckon it. Nice analogy. I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and a latency fan. Had a computer since I was 8, and I'm old now, so I am pretty knowledgeable without any professional savoir faire. I troubleshoot, fix, and assemble custom computers and often set up networks for the computationally challenged.
=P
SO what I want to know is, on that report, is there any relationship between latency problems (SPEED) and bandwidth problems (QUANTITY/SIZE), as the OP asked. It doesn't really matter, I was wondering if Lilith knew anything about that report that I don't from browsing it.
I've since taken a better look at the report, and it also has packet loss values, but I couldn't find anything that explicitly mentions bandwidth, although there was a network availability category and that might describe problems that result in loss of bandwidth (I guess this is the question!), like extraordinary traffic and equipment failures....
Know what I mean?
Either way, it's a handy site although I would want one that goes back longer than 24 hours because it would help consumers find out who has most of the technical problems. Like three months.

Short answer: yes. Even if you are downloading one large file, there are still lots of little control packets whizzing back and forth to check to make sure you are getting the file correctly, are you this person or that person, etc... So basically, if the system has to wait for the next chunk of big file based on the response from the little file it fired off 500 ms ago, your overall bandwidth starts to diminish rapidly (because you can't use that portion of pipe while the download / upload is still in progress). Kind of like a denial of service attack: Six people firing a "." sign at a website doesn't mean much no matter how long it takes to get back and forth, but 600,000 people firing a single "." character at that same website, and suddenly there isn't a lot of pipe to go around.

I've just tried again, and got my 4 MB PDF in about 15 seconds. I know 4 AM isn't quite peak hour, but still...
Maybe it's because I asked Gary to switch our bits to a font with less pointy 1s.

Nuh-UH! It's "Flew" Network! Like few, but with an "L".
Wait... what are talking about, here?

No, that would be Floo Network™, but I am trying to avoid copyright infringement lawsuits, as I was recently cited by the FNA (Floo Network™ Authority)...
...so, Flu Network...
