I'm good whenever you all are set. Have the post in reserve and everything.

I am ready. How about everyone else?

Seann does look cool. I assume you are aiming at some kind of Eldritch Knight / Abjurant Champion final build??

Since you are a specialist transmuter, and have chosen not to summon a familiar, you should look at taking the Sudden Shift option from PHB2. Basically, instead of a familiar, you gain the option, as a swift action, of gaining a Swim, Fly or Climb speed equal to your landspeed for a round. It looks pretty good.

Meh. Not a PHB2 kind of guy. I was just thinking of multiclassing to barbarian and keeping on that track, finally ending up as a tenth-level wizard / tenth-level barbarian. Or something like that.

By the way, I have no money left.

Alot of DMs I have met allow the ability to have a familiar to be exchanged for Armored Mage:light. That would allow you to not have any arcane casting spell failure chance while in light armor. Maybe our DM would allow you to do that since you are gonna be kind of a caster/fighter type.

Do you have access to Complete Champion? There is a sweet familiar swapout in there that heals you.

Male, but you really don't want to know how to check gender on a beholder... Human. You just can't beat that extra feat and those extra skill points. Gamer 20 (specialist school - DMing)/Theater Tech 15/Writer 10/ Slacker 30

I'm here and ready to go. I'll even be around most of the day.

Let me just toss down a cup of coffee and finish out the last little details for Anders.

Nah. Could I trade in the familiar for a minor magic item?

Short term gain. Won't be noticable in 3 levels, but the loss of the familiar will be. I would go for the ability to wear light armor without spell failure. It will be handy for a Barbarian/Wizo to have a chain shirt on.

Well, I was going to go for an amulet of nmatural armor +1, but I'll take whatever. I just never jived with the concept of familiars.

I think familiars worked much better when they were summoned by a spell, in 1st and 2nd editions. If you wanted one, you could create one. If you didn't, or even just couldn't be arsed to keep track of it, no problem -- just don't cast the spell.

Automatically granting a familiar to all wizards and sorcerers at first level was just asking for them to pop into existence when you remember them, and vanish when you forget about them, like Vaarsuvius' bird.

The same thing goes for the whole animal companion thing.

It sometimes feels like some of the game changes for 3rd edition were specifically designed with the anime loving teen girl crowd in mind. I worry that the trend will continue with 4th ed.

Tell you what, rather than hanging it on a magic item, want to call it a wash and just swap the familiar for +1 Natural AC?. Can just say it comes from all the scarring over the years of spellbook writing.

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

Seriously? How annoying. I'll repost it over here, and then just post over there after it. Hopefully it'll repop eventually:

Interior Vanderboren Estate

Having listened to Lavinia’s impassioned plea, and the details of her proposal, Lyssa, Bynoc, and Ballast bow out, citing a myriad of reasons for their refusal, leaving Eldin, Harvin, Terin, and Anders to discuss strategy. Lavinia makes preparations to retire for the evening, and after thanking the four of you profusely for your assistance, she adds, “I did not want to say anything until all of you were committed to helping, but there are two others waiting already at pier five. I sent them there earlier in the day to keep watch in case Vark attempted to leave port with my family’s ship.”

Lavinia continues, “One is a distant relative who should be easy to spot by his tattoos. The other, well, I’m not entirely sure about that one but he seemed desperate for work, I’m desperate for help, and he has a lead on transportation, which I thought you might need. I wish I could do more for you, but everything I own is tucked away in the family vault. Good night, and good luck!”

As the four of you leave the estate and begin your assignment, the transition into the Azure District is clear. Not only is the district less ostentatious, but the watch patrols have become more obvious. Before long, the smell of the brine air reaches your nostrils, and a gentle salty spray alights on your skin. Aside from the occasional drunken sailor swaying from dive tavern to brothel or back again, the district appears to be almost tranquil, now that the whaling activities of the daylight hours have waned. You reach Pier Five without incident, and find two men standing nonchalantly at the end, apparently attempting to blend in, but you notice them furtively glancing at a vessel anchored in the middle of the harbor once too often.

Tyndal:

Spoiler:

Earlier today, you won the title to a small, leaky trawler by the name of “The Low Tide” during a particular cutthroat game of dice. It is doubtful the vessel will remain seaworthy for long without major repairs, but should still be suitable for plying around the harbor at this time. Attempts to barter the boat for whiskey have thus far been unsuccessful.

Y'know, that seems like it would be of more use than a familiar. Deal.

And I'm sorry for being a jerk; I just HATE the concept of automatically having a familiar.

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

Pshaw! No big deali-o. I appreciate everyone being so patient while we get back on track.

Hey, I'm going to be at DragonCon this weekend, returning on Monday. I won't have computer access while Im there, so I won't be able to post. I apologize for that.

If any action breaks out, feel free to run Tyndal as a npc, he's a pretty basic fighter, so will just stand in the front and hit folks while taking the brunt of the punishment from the bad guys.

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

Aight, can do. :) Enjoy yourself! Just waiting out a few more posts before the party travels to the boat atm, myself.

How much to fix the lil' boat later on, like after the Nixie stuff? It will be handy to have later.

I had big plans for scuttling it, after using it as a minor plot device, but if you really like it and are getting attached to it, I don't see why you couldn't fix it up to use as a lifeboat or some such. It's pretty wrecked, but you could always dry-dock it until you were higher level?

Well not to spoil anything but we will need a small boat in the next couple levels, so I just figured we could use that for a bit (pretty much all of us playing have read the adventure or are running it for our home groups).

You've intrigued me. Rigid storylines make for crappy games anyhow. Tell you what: I'm going to try to sink it twice. If you can save it, you can keep it, and I'll find some storyline way to fix it cheaper.

Until and unless we are noticed, and the guys on the ship start trying to knock us off or something, would we be able to take 10 on climb checks? That should get most of us up.

Good thing we're trying to steal every tactical advantage we can.

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

"Sulks"

Yeah, probably.

You wouldn't be able to take 20 because of the risk of failure, not to mention the extra 10 wouldn't buy you squat, but 10 should be fine, indicating great care used while not under duress.

Darnit, I really wanted the risk of a "'plash!" ;)

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

Who knows, maybe by the time the cleric and the mages are climbing up things will have gotten "fun" and we won't be able to take 10 anymore...

Actually, I've just realised, Eldin wouldn't make a DC10 climb check if taking 10 - so there's still at least one chance for a splash.

Hey...Im back. DC was fun :)

Thanks for running Tyndal while I was out.

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

Just a note -- I'm about to head off to a RL game. I'll try to poke my head into the thread a couple of times today. It shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This will be my first PbP combat, so I'm curious to see how it goes.

Hey mwbeeler, Terin's form(s) only have one attack (usually a bite) but I was wondering if I could just use the same damage and say it is a claw sometimes. Just for flavor, mind you, not for any advantageous reasons, I just think it would be cooler to say "The hunting cat reaches out from the shadows with a swipe of it's claw, ripping into the creature." as opposed to all the time being "I bite the creature". Whadda ya think? If there is ever a reason for the 1 natural weapon attack I get to be a bite then we can just assume it is (like maybe a creature coated in ingestion poison and Terin attacking it or something like that).

Male Humanoid Expert 2 / Magewright 1

I'm great with that. I actually had to go reread the predator form description and go back to find your own choice of animal before putting down the combat flavor. Hopefully everyone is enjoying themselves so far, and anything to enhance that can't be bad.

Much obliged for the kind words. I'm likely going to attempt a Dark Sun thing next, but not until after the PbP I'm a player in wraps up. If I spread myself too thin, this game would suffer for it.

Dark Sun. Dark Sun! DARK SUN!! Count me in! Also you might wanna grab Heathy for this too, he is a Dark Sun freak also. Just don't rush because of my anticipation or anything, I am still getting the hang of playing in 2 PBPs, gaming once a week, and trying to figure out what I want to run for a PBP eventually.

This is one of the few times that my snark actually helps: when a factoid is simultaneously on- and off-topic.

I was reading Terin's character profile, when I noticed that his age was listed as 20. Isn't that a little young for an elf?
