Dragon and Dungeon Transition Discussion

For what it's worth, my love of Dungeon (and, I guess, Dragon) comes from the staff, not the brand name.

The creative talent, honest leadership, and excellent customer service have won me over time and time again.

I wish WotC the best in their new and admirable focus on adventure publishing, but trust me, I'll be following Paizo's productions whatever the titles are. (but dang you need to do something about your price tags. Oy. Any chance of a military discount or something?)

From the FAQ:

"Each volume of Pathfinder will be available as a PDF, purchasable online at paizo.com. For those who subscribe to Pathfinder, this PDF is free; just head online to paizo.com when the PDF becomes available and it's yours!"

This right here is the most outstanding news of all. I spent months scanning the AoW Adventure Path so I could make it into something more usable in-game than a magazine article. Having the PDF already available sells me immediately. Hopefully, it will be cut-n-paste enabled?

Regarding the death of the Dragon, it took me a few minutes to formalize my thoughts about the loss of these titles. I posted them on my blog and link it here http://blog.wku.edu/~charles.plemons/ .

Here's to years of Paizo Publishing to come!

I don't want PDF's... I want my Dungeon & Dragon's!!! Hard copy, glossy, full color, HARD COPY!!! I'd pay $10 an issue!!! Well considering it's two magazines that'd be $20 an issue!!!

This little Vrock is not a happy Tanar'ri.

Fortunately, Pathfinder is both. Unlike WotC, Paizo gives a choice between physical and digital (and actually lets us double-dip and get both). Kudos to Paizo.

PDF? Woooo! Another AP for my Fantasy Grounds game, awesome! Pathfinder's defintely dampening the hurt of the loss of Dragon and Dungeon.

Thanks Paizo! You guys rock!

I couldn't say it better myself. I'm still a little shocked at this announcement, but I realize this is WOTC's decision and not Paizo's. Paizo has always given me excellent, prompt, and courteous service. I refuse to return such service with disdain or anger when it was something beyond your control.

I'm willing to give Pathfinder the fair shake Paizo has earned, I hope others will too.

Liberty's Edge

I'd like to echo the majority here, Paizo rocks and my loyalties follow them. Quality and customer service seem to be priorities for Paizo. I'll be trying out Pathfinder, and I'm confident that I'll be happy with the product.

Thanks, Paizo!

Wow - this is a big surprise.

I am sad to see it end, but than again, everything has to end or else we would have no beginnings.

Oh well - I will check out the new material and make a decision then - I am alway a skeptic until I have it in my hands and know the content is good.

Best of luck!

I did it! I switched my subscription over to Pathfinder! I feel like a king!!! I know I'm technically a Contributor, but can I get "Pathfinder Subscriber" in my name-line please oh please! :-)

I'm a brand name loyalist. I don't want Dungeon or Dragon to die and I will continue to buy them even if Wizards publishes them as PDFs.

Having said that--I've fallen in love with Paizo Publishing and how they treat their customers and their incredible high standards of quality and I will continue to buy everything they sell as well.

Oh, since I did manage to contribute to both Dragon and Dungeon before they died, can I get the contributor title if Nicolas can get the Pathfinder subscriber title :) :) :)

Thank you for publishing Seeds of Sehan and Exag. A little piece of Greyhawk is forever mine thanks to Paizo!

Wouldn't that require subscribing rather than relying on all your comp copies? ;-)

But...but...I had a three year sub to both mags...Can't I just be cool! ;-)

You're cool with me, Nick...even cooler if you had taken that job at UTEP and joined our gaming group!!!!!!

The joining your gaming group part of that would indeed rock...but nearly all of my friends are cops now, and I think at least one of us needs to be a civvie and whine and complain about The Man, and how cops bully us around. ;-)

Hey, my gaming group consists of four teachers, two cops and one escrow officer....your whining would have fit right in!!!

Gotta watch the man.....

I'd trade you ;-)

(I guess my 1 manuscript under review and 13 or so queries in the Black Hole are now defunct... especially since most were Eberron or FR, not OGL)

Add one more to the Paizo Loyalist Legionnaires. With you guys all the way.

Was that a rumor of Sean K. Reynolds getting back in the mix? So many rays of sunshine slipping through these dark clouds! A tear to me eye!

That was me that was hoping for the job at UTEP! They didn't invite me to campus, so it's pretty clear that I won't be getting the offer. I'd so be there, and would certainly have taken you up on your invitation to game, F2K. (I won't be joining Nick's group in Hawaii either, I regret to report). Stupid job search process! Stupid ivory tower bulls***! I'll probably get a job in a town with no cool gamers!

Edit: I am flattered, though, that you confused me with Nick Logue, F2K, however undeserving I may be of the honor.

Bah, as far as cool gamers go, the confusion is completely understandable. You gents would both be welcome at my gaming table anytime!

Sorry to hear the job hunt is sucking Peruhain...believe me...I know EXACTLY how you feel. Academia...poopy employment options. I can't get anything. None of the colleges I've applied to have even responded to me. I don't get it, I'm a Fulbright Scholar, doesn't that mean they just hand me a corner office and a sexy secretary to "make calls" and "take dictation" for me? I'm so confused!!! ;-)

I don't think WotC plans to keep the brand names, and I don't think they actually plan to replace the mags with comparable content online. The "transition" is five months away and they didn't bother to make any other announcement yesterday besides a terse and cryptic statement to the effect that "the gamer of the future will be seeking this kind of material online." If they actually had a plan to keep publishing the magazines in some form, they would have announced it yesterday, both to keep loyal readers and generate a sales buzz. This is what Paizo did by publishing "pathfinder."

Nope, Wizards is going to kill Dragon and eat it, the way Tiamat does when she tires of an old consort!

Good analogy. And that gamers of the future line is total b!@*@&&~.

Oh, and count me as a loyalist, too. I'll be subscribing to Pathfinder soon.

I didn't confuse you two. There was an opening for a associate professorship for dance and oriental studies or something like that at UTEP and I e-mailed Nick about it.

Sorry to hear that you won't be coming down to our windy convection oven. The landings at our airport in March and April are a cheap adrenaline rush white knuckle ride, especially if you fly in a commuter jet.

Awww man!!!!! You mean both me and Nick Logue had chances at jobs at UTEP (and more importantly seats at F2K's gaming table), and they didn't give them to us? Man, don't they know how cool it is to have gamer professors? Now I'm really bummed about academia. It's really getting in the way of my favorite hobby!

Scarab Sages

I am another Paizo Loyalist. From what I've read of Pathfinder so far, I'll at least purchase the first issue. After that, we'll see. But I've always been impressed with Paizo's collective skill, love of the game, and much needed loyalty to its customer base (something WotC is sorely lacking).

I will say, from what little I've seen of this new world they are creating it looks really cool. Can't wait to see more. Long Live Paizo!

Absolutely count me in. I don't have the D&D pedigree that many of you have, in fact I had just renewed my Dungeon subscription for the first time. So though I haven't been with the magazines over the years, the magazines are how I came to meet Paizo. For me, it's no contest. I love how this company operates and the products that they put out. And I love that we get to rub punctuation with the editors here on the messageboards.

Eeew, that sounds kinda gross. I was trying to convert "rub elbows" into an online metaphor, but it came out as a little...dirty.

Anyway, Paizo, count me in.

I've been to these boards many times, usually just reading posts and new information and opinions. But I always lurked around, never actually posting. I've purchased many of Paizos quality products in the past. I love the adventure paths that the staff has created and continues to make.

To that end I'm very secure in feeling that Pathfinder will be an excellent campaign. So I went ahead and pre-ordered my subscription.

I just wanted to post for once and thank the entire staff for all of the work that they do with each and every installment of the magazines and high quality adventure paths that they have released and I am certain will continue to work hard to bring us a more rich gaming experience.

Thanks guys, you rock.
