By popular request, we've added some new features to the paizo.com messageboards. Now you can have a user profile, visible to others. And for those who are participating in play-by-post games, you can have multiple messageboard aliases tied to your paizo.com account.
The new user profile page lets you describe yourself or your character. All fields are optional, so if you don't want to disclose your full name or location, you don't have to. You can use our standard BBCode markup in the "about me" box. All other fields (except stats) are free-form text allowing about 250 characters of text.
The page also provides links to your recent posts and recent product reviews. You can now subscribe to an RSS feed of a user's recent product reviews in addition to a feed of their recent posts. The recent product reviews page is a great resource for finding good products. For example, Lady Aurora has posted dozens of reviews of D&D mini singles, and Megan Robertson has posted a ton of reviews from the RPG Resource website.
For those playing in play-by-post games, or just those interested in sockpuppetry, you can now create multiple messageboard aliases. To create or modify your aliases, go to your My Account page (link at the top of every page), and click the "Create new messageboard alias" link. If you've already created multiple paizo.com accounts, contact me at webmaster@paizo.com with information about your accounts and I'll get you fixed up.
Once you've created an alias, you can select which account you want to set as the author of a messageboard post when creating your post.
Wow that's totally awesome, Gary!!! You're my favorite PostMonster General!!!!
Why, thank you Spiky! I think you're pretty awesome too. Will you grant me a wish?
Also, if you're not sure who's the real author of a post (see that dodgy interaction between myself and Spiky, above), mouse over their name or avatar. We'll probably add some additional visual cue to help indicate sockpuppets.... Suggestions welcome.
Awesome; you guys keep mixing it up and rocking the Paizo website; hehe so good you make me want to hold up my avatar thumb on fire like a lighter at a rock concert. Totally cool.
This is flippin' sweet!
Rouge rouge rouge!
Ha Ha!
I should add that you can get to your own profile page quickly by clicking on your name at the top of the page (where it says "Welcome, so-and-so").
uhm; ok; now I am intimidated :) am I stuck being anonomous user 46? I need a user manual. Awesome, but not to user friendly without some instructions for us blonde lost in the machine types.
No, just change the name right there in the text box and click the "save changes" button. You can change the name up until you've made 10 posts under that alias. After that it's set in stone.
You just type in there, and hit enter I think. I did it.
Rouge Rouge Rouge!
ok; think I got it to work; whew; was bit tense there for a moment.. dont want to send my avatar back to the home plane so to speak.
Wow! That is awesome. Hey so can I get my old account names changed to aliases? The important one is Greis Rashire as AU 11. The other one I can just rename, no big deal. Greis Rashire is it's own account though, which means I need that account unmade before I can rename my alias to it. If you could help me out that would be great. Thanks. I'm with Spiky! You rock!
And how many of these aliases did you say we get again...
There's currently no limit. Naturally we can set one if it becomes an issue.
Gary Teter wrote: There's currently no limit. Naturally we can set one if it becomes an issue. I'm sure my attention span will be exceeded long before that would occur.
This is almost as cool as Cosmo!

I've set Greis Rashire as your alias. You can use Anonymous User 11 for something else.

My profile is complete. Next, the world!
I can't edit or delete my post under my alter ego. Hmm.
The Jade wrote: I can't edit or delete my post under my alter ego. Hmm. Ahhhh. You're right. Overlooked during testing. Will fix.
Sorry...I think I found a bug. I tried to fill out a profile for Greis, and the save and preview buttons didn't work. Sorry. Looks great though!
When you say they didn't work, does that mean they were disabled? Did you get an error message? Did the page reload at all? What happened after you clicked?
The Nephrite wrote: My profile is complete. Next, the world! Mine too! Although I'll settle for "Step 2: Profit."
Very cool Gary, thanks!
Ive just sent you an email about disabling the alternate account I set up for the Grimmbold Manor play by post game, so I can set up an alias instead. Thanks.
I really like the new "BBCode tags you can use" tag too. Cool.
Gary Teter wrote: When you say they didn't work, does that mean they were disabled? Did you get an error message? Did the page reload at all? What happened after you clicked? The buttons were there, but unlike all the other buttons on the site, clicking them did nothing. No little dotted line box around them, no sign that the computer was working. It's like they weren't hooked up to anything--just pictures shaped like buttons. They wouldn't even click.
That's really bizarre. I'll look into it tomorrow.
Mike McArtor wrote: The Nephrite wrote: My profile is complete. Next, the world! Mine too! Although I'll settle for "Step 2: Profit." LOLing at the special ability of yours, Mike. And your about section was tellingly intimate and genuine. I wonder if we're all going to open up in the about section or just devolve into Buckaroo Banzai quotes.
Gary Teter wrote: That's really bizarre. I'll look into it tomorrow. Well whatever it was, it works now. Weird.
EDIT: No nevermind, it works for Grimcleaver, but not for Greis Rashire...hmm.
I've also noticed that you cannot edit your post after it has been submitted if you are posting in an alias, only if you are using your original identity.
Yes, that should be fixed soon.
Well, nevermind my other post in customer service; I'll e-mail you later, Gary.

One lil thing I noticed about the new programming... when I click my name in order to find my last few posts, and then I click on the post I'd like to link to, it takes me to the start of that particular thread, but not to the post itself.
eg. I click on my last contribution to rants and it takes me to Saern's introduction on page one of that massive thread.
Regarding Aliases:
How do we DELETE an alias that we no longer want? Say that a campaign has ended, for example, and we no longer need the character alias for a PbP game?
I'm toying with the idea of letting you delete aliases that haven't been used. (I'm seeing a lot of "Anonymous User xx" on the profile pages.)
I don't think deleting an alias that has been posted is a good idea. What would we do with the posts made under that alias? Delete them? Revert the poster's name to the main account?
I think, if you're done using the alias, just don't use it any more. I'm open to further suggestions, of course.
Edit: Pointless edit to force snapshot propagation.
I've been having trouble seeing posts lately. For example, I know that you've posted on this thread Gary. If I click on your name and read your recent posts, I can read what you've posted on this thread. But, I still can't actually see the post on this thread.
Hmmm. Might be a problem with the change notification service. I'll give it a kick.
I'm finding that posts are disapearing. The last three posts I made were not visible to me after I left the site and then returned. Other people's recent posts that I had read previously also seem to have disapeared.
Heh. And now they're back again

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. Nevermind!
Highly useful modifications, all of them. Thanks for the effort, I think it will definitely pay off for the site in the long run. :)
This is neato.
Thanks for the improvements! They bring me much joy.
Thanks Gary!
I had more fun writing my profile than should be allowed by law.
And I loooove reading everybody elses...now I know just how many of you are completely f!@~ing crazy...it makes me feel safe. :-)
I like the alignments the best..."Lawful Apathetic" and "Chaotic Cute" are two of my favorites. :)

I put my alignment as Lawful Naughty. ;)
