I think it's just all the dungeon-crawleyness of it that turns off female players. Give them a good solid story with character exploration and loads of drama and you'll get as many women players as me. I think it's just that guys tend to be happy enough just stomping from room to room killing squiggly monsters and taking their stuff whereas girls require a fair bit more content to their gaming.
The women gamers I know are in it to kick butt, with out exception. The other type of women gamers were in it for their boy friends. But those I know who enjoy playing D&D and other RPG games are all power gamers. The one exception was a group of mostly women who enjoyed this DMs goofey story telling style. Even most of them were into the combat and kicking butt. My experience has been different if limited. I have not played with a whole lot of women, really into the game.

So I have been going out with this pretty blonde girl from Cali. Last week she finds out about my gaming. She had some question about D&D being a cult, then decides not to return my phone calls. Anyway a week later I find out she don't want to see Sir Kaikillah anymore.
Damn heart stealing, soul sucking non- gaming wench.
Anyway that really sucks!!

Sir Kaikillah |

So has anyone else been dumped for thier gaming hobbie?
How did it feel?
Cause for me it sucks, and I am a little upset at myself for not recognizing this woman for the anti gamer she is. I should have known when she told me she never watched any of the Star Wars movie. Ussually that is a waring sign , but she is so damn pretty I over looked that.
Never sleep with a woman who doesn't like Star Wars, it just won't work for us dorks.
I've been dumped before. It always sucks, but ussually it has been over my obnoxious self centered ways (i'll spare the details). Never because of gaming.
Have any of the women, who post on these boards, been dumped because of gaming?
Do women worry about appearing to dorky for a man? Do you hesitate letting a man, you are dating, know you play D&D?

Ah Sir K, that does indeed suck.
I don't think I've ever been dumped over D&D, although none of the women I've been out with have ever been into it.

Dude, my wife liked Star Trek when we met. I knew she wouldn't pull the "you're too much of a dork for me!" thing. I thought I could convert her to gaming but that's a no-go, hopefully when the kids are older and we need an extra person to "help fill in the party" I can give it another go (about 7 years from now).
The opposite sex sucks in general. Guys suck, girls suck, but mostly the sad part is that the vast majority of people in general suck.
If a person can't see you as person due to a hobby you have then f*$k em. You're better off without the a-hole. All they would do is try to siphon away your gaming time because they don't understand it. Concentrate on your life and having a good time. Everything else will fall into place.

It seemed unlikely that he would quote himself, I thought... Anyway, that phrase didn't sound particulary Fakish - especially after reading his Grail rants.

Man, what gets me is I'll hear the girls at work talking about Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy. Like okay. That's so cool. I'm a dinkus. Whatever.
ever catch girls talking about cloths and make up.
Anyway thanks for the support.I new the guys on the paizo boards would understand.
You guys are my friends.
gee.

Usually I am so dorky that a girl is going to pick up on it before things go to far. But usually is not "always" and things happen fast and before you know it your in a bad relationship.
Anyway after about three weeks it over and I can move on.

Why wouldn't I quote myself, I gots mad wisdom! Yes that is a phrase I use whenever someone I know is starting to realize something is wrong with their relations. It is something I came to realize by a long period of trial and error and error and error, and...well you get the point.
The Grail Rants were just my opinion on defacing beautiful artwork.FH (Wise as all-get-out)

Never followed this thread past the first few posts and didn't realize that we could gloat about our kick ass SOs. My wife is a wonderful and gorgeous geek that has read more sci-fi fantasy than me and has seen all the Next Gen episodes so many times that I ask her for references.
She used to play with us, but that was back in the 2e days and now she won't play because she doesn't want to learn the new 3e rules ( and she's not as comfortable around my current group as much as she was with our older group ). She still proofs my writing and helps me creatively by being someone I can bounce ideas off of.

Hmm, I have the same vibe, it is quickly obvious that I am a geek (and if it is not, I get to mock their cluelessness). Actually people are surprised on how little science fiction I read...

People who know I play D&D are surprise I don't like computers games like WOW or neverwinter nights. I also don't like comic books another dork standard.

Sir Kaikillah |

hehe you guys are more suave then I at most times when annoyed; I would have been more like I got your dork right here; wanna play? or some such neanderthal sophmoric dribble responding to such nonsense in like manner.
I can be an obnoxious dork, just to make people uncomfortable. If I been drinking and I find somebody anti-dork, or just generally "better" than , I get obnoxious.
I am also an abnoxious Moke.A moke is a large Hawaiian fella, with no job, bare foot, uneducated, and ready to eat white flesh.

as a woman, sometimes, i just dont understand other women. if it makes him happy let him do it, just make sure you make him happier.
i wanted very few things in a man..sense of humor, open minded, creative, likes DnD, recognises that Darth Vader IS a god, and my cat liked him. ok so my hubby doesn't understand darth vader is god, but he does like SW.
my husband wasn't a gamer when we met, he was a jock (no issues with that here other then he didn't play/follow NFL football) he'd never been exposed to gaming either on the computer or RPGing. he's totally into it now. he wasn't a reader until i introduced him to the first Forgotten Realms bood I'd read..Darkwalker on Moonshae. It took him 6 long painful months to read it (he's dislexic) but he loved it.
its the luck of the draw..would i have married him if he hated DnD? yeah, and i wouldn't have let it stop me from playing, i've been doing it since i was 8, not gunna stop now! i am proud to proclaim i am a geeky gamer chick!

thank you willow. I was looking for a women gamers view on the subject.
You know I was football playing jock in school (and a closet D&D player cause it is not cool to play D&D if your a jock in the 80's.)Gosh it so much easier to breathe getting out of that closet.

My wife called me a dork about 20 times on our first date. Unfortunately that was before I broke the news about playing D&D to her... :-(
Now she just laughs at me whenever a D&D reference makes it into a movie/TV show/commercial (they're never flattering).
The latest culprit is the Altell commercial. (Little does she know, I actually am a 5th-level Dungeon Master, aha--take that!)

HH, as a D&D chick... it's not cute when the guys are like that but it's REALLY not cute when a girl does it. There's few enough of us out here and one's like that just give the rest of us a bad name. (note Fatespinner's last word in that post) :o)

![]() |

Aww, heck. I was just kidding.
I actually had two girls gang up on me in 8th grade, and the dungeonmaster was in collusion with them; he was wrapped around their finger.
They just weren't playing right (IMO then); we were supposed to loot dungeons and kill orcs and such, and they wanted to go...barhopping!!! So they decided I was too bossy and they'd just kill me.
I'm not sure who was right or wrong. It was a bad scene.
I think they disabled me and stole all my stuff, so at 3rd level, I was reduced to staving in kobold skulls with a tree branch to acquire wealth for reequipping myself.

Tegan |

I didn't think you were all that serious about it. Oh, and that's probably not what he was "wrapped around" but if it helps you sleep at night we'll go that. :o)
There's been 5 other women that I've played with & 2 of them were/are new to the game (DM's daughter & friend). The other one is my friend & the DM's wife & well, we get along fine w/o any problems. The other was another new one and wasn't quit sure how to take the rest of the table.
Either way though, one's that act like Fatespinner had would be like sitting at a table with a 4 year old. *heehee*

My original DM got his first girlfriend into the game with us. She was cool, but it was kind of annoying, because she got special treatment. Still she wasn't b+#*&y or anything (although later on she did go crazy and was institutionalized). The DM also got his second girlfriend to game with us a little, but she was a mega-b+~&+, and one of the reasons I stopped gaming with the guy. I'm still good friends with him though.

Neko-Tenshi15 |

My boyfriend and I call each other dorks and geeks all the time, its like a pet name kinda thing. But we like it that way, because being a geek is way better than being as we say "boring".
So yeah, she was probably just teasing you, if she really hated the fact that you liked Dnd she woulda probably left by now. And if a girl can't understand her guys passion for gaming, well she just isnt the one for you. Seriously though, I bet she has a passion too, for collecting shoes, or purses or clothes or something. Your passion just involves more of your imagination.
And yeah, maybe most girls arent as into gaming as me, but still, my brothers girlfriend, whos a pretty blonde cheerleader in high school, plays with us too, every week. And she has a lot of fun with her elf sorceress.

Do women worry about appearing to dorky for a man? Do you hesitate letting a man, you are dating, know you play D&D?
I don't hesitate in letting him know anything like that about me because I would much rather be with a person I could share this hobby with than someone who would be uncomfortable with me for it.
For example, tomorrow is the one day this week that I'll get to spend with my boyfriend, and what are we doing? Going to a miniature painting class at the game store and then running the campaign I wrote.

1. You are replying to a post from 15 years ago in a thread that was awakened by a (now-deleted) spambot, to a poster who has not been here since 2008.
2. "They"? Do you mean "women"? Because you might want to clarify what you mean there if that's not what you meant. If it is what you meant, we (meaning this community and its members) do not welcome generalized attacks on an entire gender here.
