Well from what I remember of the drunken conversation I had with my Star Wars buddy, they intend to make the Jedi classes (which were two in the original core book - Consular and Guardian, which went up to 3+ in the supplements, including sentinel etc) into one single class. Some of the other classes will be removed (I think the idea of having four or five classes is the concept they are working with). No skill points (Using True20 as the basis). Traditional Hit Points, and generally focusing their game around mini's.

Still on the main subject, which will inevitably happen:
I sincerely believe that one of the first announcements WotC will make around 4E will be something like
«It will be roughly 90% compatible with 3.5 material.»
That sentence will evidently come from one of D&D's gurus, Skip Williams or Andy Collins will be my guess - the sentence that will guarantee confidence will have to come from one of the top men.
That said, we shall see a D20 system, a (may times said) class system, the old Hit Point bag and a lot of other sacred cows.
What we may see revised are skills/feats/combat maneuvers/skill tricks and the way they interact.
There will be more class options à la Unearthed Arcana, PHII, etc - perhaps not in the main books, but in the following line of products.
I'm sure they will straighten the whole prestige class procedure and the progression to epic level (which was very poorly done and left the door open for Bruce Cordell to do a much more straightforward job in his psionic domain - I hope someone puts him on the design team; he has a lot of good ideas and the correct vision to implement them).
And, oh, my group has bought quite a lot of books all the way from Basic Set. So I guess we're sure costumers for another round.
=:D
They will try to solve the Polymorph thing, either through a sub-school or whatever.

I have been dreading this since I came Back to D&D 4 years ago.
There is no need for a new edition. But with all the money they rake in, you must assume WotC has been working on this for a long, long time. Probably since the moment 3rd ed. became 3.5.
Mutants and Masterminds is a system that works for Superhero roleplaying, but I think it would ruin D&D to use a system like that. Superhero classes? Sounds like P.S. 238. Classes in a Fantasy RPG, more necessary if you ask me.

in my oipion, 4th edtion would ruin D&D, unless they go back to the old roots of D&D. I mean bring back sub-classes (assian, ranger ect.) you used to have hardly any expansion books which cost £30 a go, with 2 reguired books (phb+dmg) and no Numbered MM (maybe have black pages to staple on dowloadable creatures.) but going classes would make it a late GURPs. Oh and as a final oan, bring back indepentant RPG?wargaming magazines please

im not so sure.see, i own 11 3.5 D&D books, an i dont fancy buyin em all over again.
Yep, I just could say the same !!!
I own about 25 books, some other products (adventures, fantastic locations and so on...), and I wouldn't like to buy it all once again !
I only had about 3-4 1st edition when 2nd came out, only 4-5 2nd edition when 3rd came out... and I don't want to go through this again !
Plus my players would never buy PHB + one complete book (several of them bought one) again !
Just like somebody said, my (more or less) 1,500 or 2,000 USD won't be spent again, especially since I'm going to be a father soon !

First off, I have to ask a question . . . how exactly could 4th edition be MORE minis intensive? Tactical movement and positioning is already pretty important, so I guess I can't really picture a way to make minis MORE a part of the game. Unless you include a contract in the PH, DMG, and MM that makes you promise to not play a fighter unless you get an approved fighter mini, for example . . .
At any rate, I just wanted to chime in and say that according to what was said that the D&D Winter Experience there won't be a 4th edition until at least 2009. Keep in mind they didn't say there WOULD be a 4th edition in 2009, but that there are 3.5 products scheduled all the way through 2008.
My guess is that they will have 4th edition ready to go before they get ready to release it, but they will wait on a bit more marketing research and sales figures before they make any kind of official statement, thus giving them a bit more leeway on when to schedule the new edition.
Heck, in years past they have usually spent about a year or so heralding the arrival of the new edition, to give people time to adjust to the idea and to convince them that the new edition is worth the switch, so I'm betting this time will be no different.
At any rate, take a deep breath and relax until 2009, lol.

Okay... my turn to ramble. :-)
I think 4e is like death and taxes; inevitable. Do I know when it will arrive? No.
I'd enjoy an Eberron/D&D TV series. I was running a (somewhat) high level Eberron game for about a year (last left the heroes in the thick of Dreadhold, trying to rescue an old comrade they thought long-dead.) So... see I'm not just exploring Xen'Drik. My group hasn't gotten there... yet. (They did spend about a year of time on Argonnessen. The bard was slated to become the latest "Dragonsinger" (PrC from Draconomicon) and had to go through several trials and tasks to earn it.) So with that "Argonnessen Odyssey" as an exception, they've mostly been on mainland Khorvaire (Sharn, Aundair, Eldeen Reaches, Q'Barra, a merry little jaunt into the Mournland, wilderness places in Breland, and lately Dreadhold.) Maybe after spring thaw I can get them back together to complete this Dreadhold arc.
I now return you to your regularly schedule rant regarding 4e.
~Cheers!

Just have a look here - no 4th edition in view for quite some time (read the update of february 19th):
http://www.enworld.org/index.php?page=4e
And when there is going to be a 4th edition update sometime in the far future, it is likely to be some kind of 3.75 edition according to the entry of february 18th.

I’m not sure how much you guys play, but I’m still on the SCAP and my players are 8th level. We have been playing monthly for nearly a year and a half will probably finish in about 2 years. Then there’s the AoWAP. This will take another 3-4 years to complete. Then of course the STAP – another 3-4 years. And what with a 4th AP on the horizon, which will likely be in 3.5 rules, there seems no reason to switch editions for about 12 years.
3.5 has got legs for years to come.

That's good news. A lot of people would be upset if they came out with a new edition so soon simply for marketing purposes. 3.5E seems fine for what it is.

Well, before we see the rise of 4e, I'd at least like to see WotC take some time to expand on a few areas practically untouched:
1. If not a setting sourcebook, at least an Expeditions book into Planescape.
2. If not a setting sourcebook, at least an Expeditions book into Dark Sun.
3. More background books on the rest of Abeir Toril. Preferably, all those lands outside Faerun. Frankly, whether this is done vis'a'vis more Adventure Ark hardbounds or sourcebooks, I'm indifferent. I like them both.

Nice idea. Products like that would be great. I wouldn't hold your breath, however, about source books. If they're not going to put out a sourcebook on Greyhawk, I would think that Planescape and Dark Sun have almost no chance. Expedition books might be possible though.

You now, I like FR, but aren't there enough books already. Sometimes it seems that there isn't a single square inch of land in the coer regions that isn't detailed.

I hope 4E happens. Not because I have any problem with 3.5E, especially since I just managed to get a game off the ground for the first time in fifteen years and I would have to learn another set of rules, but because if it does it means we should get continued support for many more years. If it doesn't happen we might be back in the wilderness that was post 2E.
One Proviso to me spending my cash on it though would be for it not to go down this line as I dont use minatures (nothing wrong with them just not for me) That said if this were the line I wanted to go down...
If I wanted to make the game more miniatures centric I would sell all of the monsters in blister packs with supporting stat cards that slot into an index system. This would replace the MM but I would sell an index box to organise the index cards that contained a selection of CR1 monsters stat cards and minis to start you off. This would be like the old Monsterous Compendium but in Index card style and to increase your available monsters you would need to buy the mini's. Of course for 1/2CR monsters you would get two in a pack.
I hope this never happens,

The only thing I would look forward to in another addition could be easily covered by a supplement; i think the whole idea of feats needs to be reevalutated; most plays want a lot more feats and not just necessarily combat feats. With thousands of feats available and your average character only getting like 5 or 6; this is a real problem; a real teaser.
