Getting wife into DnD

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Greetings again all.

A while back i'd posted on these forums in regard to my desire to get my wife into DnD and how she'd agreed to try a small test run of Dnd to see if it would be somethign applealing to her.

I'd come to these boards to get advice and such and that advice was great. I couldn't find the thread again, but I figured starting a new thread wouldn't be so bad.

Over the weekend, my wife finally finished her character for the run through. Now, if she does like it, then there is a chance that she'll be joining my DnD group on a sporadic basis as I run the AWAP.

She made a Halfling Ranger abberations as her FA and Mounted combat as her free feat.

So . . my idea for the small run-through, I decided that she would be asked by her mentor/higher up in the ranger order that the residents of diamond lake have asked the rangers to clear out an infestation on an old abandoned building (the old mine office outsidethe whispering cairn). My plan is that if she enjoys it that she would claim ownership of thwe house att hat point and my gaming group would be able to meet up with her there when/if she joins them.

I was thinking of setting up a gfewdifferent encounters, at least one with aberrations (found a few very low level aberrations, one in FF and one in MM2), and possible some traps and locked doors (she did take disable device and open lock for skills)

Anyone care to help me flesh out my plan?

Liberty's Edge

The Faceless One sends out a couple of kenkus and another strangler to figure out what happened to the first one (stuck in the Lair of the Architect currently). This allows her to deal with an aberration and do a little foreshadowing for Three Faces of Evil.

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

FWIW, my wife's first RPG campaign has been my Age of Worms campaign.

She's been doing fine so far. She was the only one with the sense to run when the swarm and the slasher boiled out of the shaft, and the one to figure out that you had to light the lanterns to get past the face trap.

She's been playing with gamers with about 140 collective years or experience on her at hte table, so it's been working out reasonably well so far.

She was a little upset after last session mind you. She thought the lethality level was "over the top", as she put it:

"WTF is up with this killer dungeon stuff? Why are we doing this? For treasure? If this were real? Forget it. I'd be going back to the Emporium, do some drinking and whoring and that would be it for me. First person who suggests going back, I'd knife him. Go Back in there?? Are you NUTS??"

She's got a point...

William,

Don't forget the grick hiding in the iron ball trap - that's an aberration (I think) but that part of the adventure can be deadly.
I'm a huge proponent of "letting the dice lie" and never "fudging" rolls, but I'd take every measure (at least for the first few sessions) to insure your wife's character doesn't die. This adventure path is very unforgiving of mistakes - if your wife's character dies too soon, so might her interest/enthusiasm for the game.
My wife was actually the one who introduced ME to DnD (before she was my wife) and not the other way around but I congratulate you on your efforts to include her. I'm sure she'll love it once she gives it a chance!

Wow! All the wives starting D&D, cool.

My wife sat down for a few sessions of our group's secondary DM's Eberron campaign playing an existing PC of an absent player. She enjoyed herself so much that she made her first character for my AWAP campaign.

It's been fun helping her develop her weretiger/monk knowing that she couldn't possibly be choosing it for munchkin reasons (since she doesn't even know the ups and downs of taking template class and animal class levels).

Dark Archive

These are strange times.
People are taking a weretiger/monk as their very first character.
This isn't meant to offend, but i just remembered our first attemps at roleplaying back in 1st edition days.
I had enough to do managing the possibilities of my dwarf.
Heck, non-human weren't even allowed to take a class!
Okay, i was eight years old...:)

My wife has been part of my gaming groups for the past 15 years... :-D

Although, her motivation waxes and wanes; she will go through periods of playing part time (with me NPCing her character in the meantime) and take up playing when her homework and schedule allows.

Starting next summer, my oldest daughter may join the game (she was out of town last summer); I might have to tone down the NC-17 material, but oh well...
