When I'm putting together a query for an adventure for Dungeon, I'm always concerned that It'll get rejected because I use monsters that have already been seen enough in recent (or upcoming) issues. Well, I can't predict the future, but I can document the past. Here are all the monsters that have appeared in the past 6 months (issues 118-123), including the issues they appeared in. I made no attempt indicate the *main* bad guys, and where there was a monster like a "male half-fiend hill giant dire wereboar" I generally counted it in all categories. I also tried to list them the way they appear in the monster manual (blue dragons under "D" for dragon). Yeah, I know, I should have used this time to write for Campaign Workbook or something...

Gracias, Russell!
This is a very helpful listing... from the looks of it, no Drow and no Vampires. Good! :)
I currently have a "Dungeon Submissions Vow" with myself that excludes them both, as well as Blackguards, Necromancers, Githyanki, Warforged, and any kind of Lycanthrope.
I'm sure those ideas will still be needed for future issues, but they won't come from me.

Can I just say how awesome this is! It's always helpful to pull this sort of reference material together, but the initial data gathering keeps me from maintaining a lot of the information that I should.... for instance, I keep a similar log of campaign workbook articles with a very brief description for each issue so that I'm not repeating that material.
Anyway, you've done the work, so now I can keep a maintained list for future issues... k00l.
As for Campaign Workbooks... You and Mike Mearls have written almost half of them between the two of you, so I'm just as happy to have one less of yours to compete against!!!!
(and as a bonus, I even get this cool list!)

I also note: no kobolds... this is where I cross my fingers for that query I still haven't heard on from November.

Interesting thread! Of course, keep in mind there's another half; the monsters we're going to use in the next 6-9 issues down the road. As a general rule, you probably shouldn't shy away from any monsters on that list just because we've already used them in an adventure. The ones you have to watch are the ones you see us use in three, four, or even five adventures within the span of six months. For a while, it seemed we had half-dragons in every issue, for example, so adventures revolving around half-dragons weren't as likely to get in the magazine in those days.
If I had to pick a new "overused" monster right now... it'd probably be undead. We have enough undead-themed adventures over the next year to empty at least three countries'-worth of graveyards.

Yeah - well, not a lot we can do about your six month from now quotient... thanks for the tip about the undead though, I'll put that query idea on the back burner.

no way man...
"It's a dead man's party, who could ask for more?
Everybody’s comin’, leave your body at the door
Leave your body and soul at the door . . .
(don’t run away it’s only me)"
undead are double awesome!
and another 'thank you' to the man who put this list together
Russell Brown, thank you!

I take that back.
I will write anything on request, even a half-drow/half githyanki blackguard inflicted with lycanthropy, who made a deal with a dark necromancer to steal the princess and use her innocence to fuel his undead army.
Lol.
Actually that might be a worthwhile submission. I mean if your going to go with over used cliche's you might as well go whole hog.
