I've been a big Stargate fan ever since the movie came out. I bought the first season as soon as it came out as a box set, and I've picked up each subsequent season as they came out.
Those purchases have had two affects on my wife: she's now a Stargate fan (though she doesn't watch other science fiction shows, unless you count The Dead Zone), and she's also into collecting television DVDs.
Here's what we have in our house:
Stargate SG-1 (Season 7 is coming out this month!)
Alias (Just got Season 3!!)
Monk
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
The Dead Zone
Robotech (The seven box set edition)
Samurai Jack (I can't wait for more to be released...)
Highlander
I've only just picked up the first season of Highlander on DVD and I've watched the first nine episodes. I have to say that I forgot how much I really liked that show! I'll buy each subsequent season as I watch them in order. Or maybe I'll just go out and splurge.
I'm also thinking about picking up the box sets of Andromeda.

I have to admit that I was late to jump on the Buffy bandwagon. I thought the movie was great, but somehow I just missed the first four seasons of the TV show.
But starting with season five, I became an avid watcher. I've almost bought the Buffy DVDs several times... one time I got as far as the checkout stand, then decided I should talk to my wife before I bought more DVDs, and left it on top of the M&Ms.
But now that Season Six has been out, I rented one disc to get my Once More, With Feeling fix... I might have to start from season one and work my way back up.
"A dancing demon? Now, something isn't right there..."

I came late to the Buffy bandwagon because I thought the movie was utter crap (about the nicest way I can express how much I hate that movie on these messageboards), so I figured any TV show based off it would be as well. It also doesn't help that I hate TV in general. ;)
I've since seen the errors of my way, but only recently (like right before it ended). I never watched more than about four episodes when it was on TV, so I've been making amends by purchasing the show on DVD. I've finished up through season three and am looking to purchase season four soon.
Who would have thought that something intelligent could have come from somewhere besides PBS or the History Channel? ;D

After being exhorted to do so by several friends, I have recently begun watching the first season of Babylon 5 on DVD ... and have found much of it tedious. Does the series really get better?
Oh yes. Yes it does.
The first season is just introducing a bunch of necessary stuff, some of which you won't even realize how much it mattered until three or four seasons later.

The name Buffy the Vampire Slayer kept me away from the movie *and* the series until somewhere around season three, when enough people with opinions I respect had aggregated into a large enough mass to force me to overlook the title.
Now I think it may have been the best drama series ever.

Ah, a good opportunity to list the TV series *I* have on DVD. Just to prove to myself that I buy too many DVDs that I don't watch.
Babylon 5, up to Series 3 (currently watching series 3)
Captain Scarlet, entire series (watched only a few episodes)
Roughnecks: Starship Troopers, 6 DVDs (watched all; the people who made the DVDs should be hanged for messing with the order, and the people who decided to end the series 3 episodes before the end should be hanged too)
Futurama, series 1 (watched most of the episodes)
Alias, series 1 (still in the middle)
Black Adder, all 4 series (watched all)
Red Dwarf, series 1 and 2 (watched part of 1, don't remember how much, maybe all)
Yes Minister, series 1 (don't remember how much I watched -- too long ago)
The Thin Blue Line, complete (that is, series 1 and 2) (haven't watched yet)
Spaced, series 1 (haven't watched yet)
Selected episodes from:
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Airwolf
Stargate SG-1
Thunderbirds
The Six Million Dollar Man
The Muppet Show
Batman Beyond
Danger Mouse
Doctor Who (double episode on DVD, a few on VHS)
Star Trek: The Animated Adventures (VHS)
TV miniseries:
The 10th Kingdom
V
V the final battle
On the way:
Battlestar Galactica, the entire original series
Battlestar Galactica, the miniseries
I think that's all.
I'd have bought some Star Trek: TOS if it were cheaper. A lot of the stuff above I bought on sale or found a place that sold them cheap (case in point, Battlestar Galactica -- 20 British Pounds for the entire series seemed like a good price). Star Trek is never on sale or cheap.

That's what everyone else says too! It's frustrating though. I mean, if the first fifth of a novel were this tedious, a lot of people would probably just quit reading it. Should viewers be expected to sit through a dull first season to get to the good stuff? But then, I'm kind of impatient.

So Best Buy had the last 2 DVDs for Witch Hunter Robin when I went yesterday, and since I've been trying hard to find them...snag!
Last night I watched disc 5, episodes 19-22. Tonight it's the grand finale, episodes 23-26. Yes, I've seen the whole series before, and now I can rewatch the whole thing every month. God bless DVDs! :)
So yeah, I heartily recommend Witch Hunter Robin to any anime, sci-fi, or magical realism fan. 5 stars out of 5. :)

But if you don't watch more of the series, where else will you get your Bruce Boxleitner fix? I mean, besides watching Tron as many times as I have.

Hey, if you haven't tried Firefly by Joss Whedon yet, you should really do yourself a favor and check it out. Only one season has been made, but if the movie - entitled Serenity - does well enough I'm hoping he'll do more of the Firefly series.
If you like Cowboy Bebop, westerns, or space adventures I think you'll enjoy this series.

I have that series on DVD too. At least there's only one box to buy on a one season show. Apparently the movie Serenity was made with a clause that guarantees them another two movies if the first hits a certain mark. With such a busy cinematic schedule possible, I'm afraid it's unlikely it will ever be a series again. Unless they do a spin-off.

I have all the seasons of Buffy and Angel on dvd and a few Andromada episodes.
Always happy to see other men who watch Angel. By-the-by, I'd argue the series Finale is the absolute best finale I've ever seen--it ends exactly as it should!
Also, TV on DVD is the best thing in the world for a guy like me who rarely gets to watch TV regularly--no matter how much I enjoy the show, events tend to conspire against me watching and before I know it I've missed enough of the season to be completely out of the loop. Being able to buy the entire season of a show unfortunately results in all-night marathons, but I also pick up on all the little things you might forget week-to-week. Caveat: you also lose out on the mythological build-up--that time between episodes is so short that you don't develop the story internally. Oh well! You can't have it all.

Deadwood (1st season)
Rescue Me (Seasons 1-3)

Many tapes of MST3K...many
I'll probably get the sets of the Electric Company pretty soon. My daughter is in Kindergarten and she groves on the show. (and full disclosure, I had the hots on Rita Mereno as a kid)

Episode 12 is where stuff starts to take off, and when you get to the end the pace is pretty good.
Downside is that when season 2 starts, there is a lot of slow exposition for the first 3 or four episodes, sort of a catch up for people who hadn't seen the show for 6 months or so.
The series is one of the best pieces of sci fi ever, taken as a collection. The first season was a bit weak.
I recommend checking out the Lurker's Guide website for more information about what is or is not important, if you really want to skip episodes, season 1 is the place.

~shakes my head in dismay~ After looking at the list of DVDs that everyone has shown, I have only this to say to you all...
You all are addicts! Addicts I tell you! ~runs and hides~
It's true! I am an addict! But recognizing the problem is the first step to recovery (although, I don't think I necessarily WANT to recover...)
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I may not be enough of a SciFi nut to post here... please don't ostracize me when I admit that my TV show DVD collection consists of:
"My Name is Earl,"
"Rome," and
"Police Squad,"and I'm looking to collect all the Tom Selleck "Jesse Stone" made-for-TV movies.
~you hear a mob outside chanting "Burn the Heritic! Burn the Heritic!" and you see the flickering of the torches as they are coming for you~ You will pay the price that all non-DVD collectors pay!
~grins~ NP. I started out with less than that when I started. Welcome to the club!
