The Isle of Dread

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Hello,

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the revisiting of the Isle of Dread. It took me back to when I first started playing D&D in the 1980s.

One minor quibble, the Demogorgon angle for the "mists" shrouding the island seemed a bit hackneyed to me. Why not just have the island abandoned due to dynastic decline and infighting? Of course, maybe that was part ofthe original plot idea, it is so long ago.

Cheers :-)

I loved it! Felt it was done really well and reminded me of some great times from the early years. Hope that I have the opportunity to use this in the near future.

Loved Isle of Dread, plain and simple.

I am really anticipating running "Isle of Dread". While I'm a young'un who never saw the original, my old-timer husband remembers it fondly and is excited at getting to experience it again in 3e. *very happy*

Having learned to play D&D in 1981 with the Basic Box set and the Expert Box set shortly thereafter, I love the "Torrents of Dread" adventure and the mini-gazetteer that went with it. If Dungeon wants to do a nostalgia tour through the early days of TSR modules once or twice a year I'll be extremely happy.

My only question is why was there no update of the Phanatons?

We kind of ran out of room when it came to detailing some of the new monsters that lurk on the Isle of Dread, but chances are fairly good that'll be addressed sometime soon...

Cool! Thanks. I'm enjoying my subscription to Dungeon more and more! I can't wait for #115 to come in the mail. any day now.

Perhaps if we ask a lot, some of the old module will be converted, aside from phanatons what about the rakasta?

Yea I would love to see all the old stuff come back. I have been playing D&D in all it's forms since Sept 1979. I loved when they did the 25th stuff like Return to the Keep on the Borderlands. I wish WOTC would do more of the old ones for 3.5 so a whole new crowd can enjoy them as much as we old timers did. I would even be willing to do some for Dungeon if they say it's ok. I have a large experinced group to help me out with it too. Plus I would love to hear everyone elses ideas on wich ones to do too.

I just got Dungeon 114 this week and wanted to comment on the Isle of Dread material.

I sort of agree with Ormand. The Demogorgon material would benefit with a bit more fleshing out.

Overall, however, I really liked the Isle of Dread material. I wonder, however, about merging material that has previously been identified as part of another setting with Greyhawk. Raiders of the Princess Ark? As a Greyhawk fan, I'm pleased. If I was a Mystara fan, I might not be.

There any number of no longer supported setting materials that might be moved into the "core D&D setting" (if I understand correctly that this means Greyhawk).

I have a suggestion. Run a readers poll, in the magazine or on the web. Ask readers to name their top three modules for settings that are no longer supported that they would like to see revamped as part of the "core D&D setting" (ie Greyhawk). Tally the results and, once a year, do one of the top three vote getters, just like Isle of Dread. I bet people would get interested.

Haha! That one made me laugh.

Seriously, though, I see your point. I can't help but wonder at the Dragon staff's motivation with that one. I love Greyhawk as much as the next guy, but would it have really been that hard to present the Isle as a totally generic place or use place names from Mystara instead?
