Waggi will complete the following Faction Goal: (Exchange)

Create a new trade route, either by mapping a legitimate path or opening doors to a smuggling enterprise. Doing so requires a successful Intimidate, Knowledge (geography), or Survival check with a DC equal to 15 + your character level.

Taking 10 on Survival nets him a convenient DC16.

There's no need to meta game and plan out every last roll. Just 'roll' with it. If you feel your character is well equipped to deal with a threat then make the roll. If, as we play along, your character sees another that is succeeding at some sort of check then aid them.

Unless we're all playing lawful, strict and rigid characters (Which Waggi is very much not) then all that planning seems pretty forced.

*But please as a GM, if there is an instance where only one player can make a check on something please point that out.

**Also, don't assume your characters know the DC of something. Decide ahead of time if they are more of a 'take 10 because I rock at this' type or a 'fly by the seat of the pants and hope to get lucky' type. Judging the DC of a random check, other than maybe something physical like jump and climb or swim, to me seems too metagamey.

Re-Swarms:

Thanks for your explanation. They certainly fit well with the situation and yes, I didn't find myself in personal danger just with some frustration being only at 1xp and a non caster. Swarms need consumables to deal with and fresh characters at best have one or two acids or fires on them. Their very high touch AC just makes those expendables often scorching the floor and providing splash only.

The other reasons and set up you explained made perfect sense and I agree with the fail safes you set up. I just find it frustrating in general. A party of fresh level 1s would unlikely be able to defeat them, unless they had some casters with area damage.

I guess sometimes you just can't win them all! I enjoyed Waggi's time here!

Waggi strides into the room with the others, looking over at the men in the masks with some concern This is not good for us...

"We found the clues, I will do what we were asked to do, but maybe someone that sings can help on the song?" He drags out the hood, raises it in the air, as well as retrieving the tablet to recite the song written on it.

Clues from what I could glean...:

Quest 1:

Further research confirms many of the party's suspicions. It reveals that the Chelish nobleman, Helven Leroung, sought acclaim and publicity as a Pathfinder. As the Everwar closed, he joined other Pathfinders in Varisia, exploiting archeological sites made accessible by Cheliax’s advancing armies. Yet, Helven sought a quicker path to prestige.

Traveling out ahead of the advancing army, Helven ingratiated himself with a Shoanti tribe by warning them of an impending Chelish attack. He then secretly began transcribing the Shoanti’s oral tales of the region’s history, sites, and wildlife. He also encouraged the tribe to amass items of significance as “protection” from Chelish “invaders.”

Ultimately, Helven betrayed the tribe. He gave up the tribe’s location to Chelish forces, which garnered favor with many inhabitants of the recently-established Fort Korvosa, including Montlarion Jeggare. With the Shoanti put to the sword, Helven appropriated their tales and artifacts for himself. Laden with ill-gotten treasures, he left many relics in Montlarion’s care before departing on one of the first cargo ships to sail from the settlement.

Returning to Absalom, it is clear that Helven recast the Shoanti tales as his own first-hand accounts, which were published in the Pathfinder Chronicles. During this time, in the year 4411 AR, it appears that Helven parlayed these accounts to secure a place among the first Decemvirate, as indicated by the picture of the helm.

However, Helven’s stolen successes would not go unchallenged. When Helven returned to Korvosa, he found that the now Lord Magistrate Montlarion had begun to suspect Helven’s betrayal, and the truth about his supposed heroics. Montlarion questioned Helven and presented him with eyewitness testimony of a Chelish man providing wartime aid to the Shoanti. The Korvosans demanded Helven’s ill-gotten treasures be confiscated pending further investigation. Helven was furious and a fight erupted. Using his Decemvirate helm, Helven channeled a burst of negative energy that consumed all those present, save himself and Montlarion. Weakened, Helven fled to Absalom, while Montlarion died soon thereafter.

Using divination magic, Helven would have received confirmation that each of the witnesses of his crimes had perished and he, then, would have likely believed his secrets safe.

Yet, it would appear that the Pathfinder Eylysia came to suspect the truth and attempted to reveal Helven’s evil. While Eylysia was apparently unable to unmask or defeat the canny Decemvirate member, she escaped with her life, leaving clues that she could be used by other Pathfinders to discover the true nature of Helven and the events surrounding the Chelaxian’s rise to the Decemvirate.

Quest 2:

You are able to piece together the content of one of the tablets from the various pieces. The tablets contain an ancient ballad that tells the story of a dwarf named Jorgar Ironbellows, an ambitious noble who murdered his father to secure his inheritance, only to be assassinated by his own son in turn. The fable serves as a cautionary tale, warning others about the folly of favoring one’s own ambition above the lives of their fellow dwarves.

If anyone lays a hand on the one of the tablets:
You suddenly receive a brief vision of an elderly gnome woman who says, “If only this song had been sung in the halls of Absalom’s lodge, perhaps these lessons would have saved a few lives and reputations. Sing it once more for me the next time you’re there, would you?”

Quest 3:

You infer from the inscription that Eylysia was telling her or whomever discovered her message that raising their hood would stand as a signal of support or alliance. This is almost certainly the clue that you were sent to find.
