For GM:
Besides the Gates to the Cradle, Turngut stands up quickly as he sees his friends begin to bicker. No! No! Come and say good-bye, Hoppo. Come Hoppo, my friend. I want to see you. Once more, maybe the last time? Come see me.. He waits, bobbing on the balls of his feet to see what they do. Will they want him back or will they let him go in peace?

For GM only:
Turngut is confused by the setting and the big words, but when the images of his 3 friends appear, his face lights up and he smiles as he watches them continue the fight. When Ib is mentioned, Turngut spins around and sees the hobgoblin sitting there. Throwing his hands up, he calls out, Ib!! You here with Turngut! You go back and fight or you go to, uh, Cradle?
Then, looking back to Eroned, he looks uncertain again. Turngut not know. Turngut never get to make choice for what Turngut want. Always do what others say.... Turngut is tired. Turngut tired of killing. Turngut tired of hurting. But if Eron-dead say Turngut should go help friends, then Turngut will fight. Turngut will hurt. Turngut will help friends.[/b]
I'm totally at a loss of what to do! I feel like Turngut is genuinely at peace, but at the same time, I'm not sure how the other PCs will deal with this. Death makes for some powerful storytelling, so I guess we can just see how this plays out!!

This is some first-class storytelling everyone! I am very sad about Turngut, but this story is AMAZING and your PC's responses are very heartwarming. I'm curious to see how this plays out!!

For GM only:
Turngut looks around, confused. Uhhh. Eron? Eron-ded? You Wrinklebutt's friend? Uh, Turngut mean... The orc struggles to come up with BobE's actual name. Uhhh. Old-man's friend? Turngut feel happy for first time. Body not hurt, not feel broken in here. He taps his chest over his heart. B-but Hoppo! Hoppo need Turngut? Or is Hoppo OK? Turngut see Hoppo flying like bird. Hoppo free now too. Will Hoppo come to Cr-cradle too? Or maybe Turngut wait for Hoppo here? What Turngut do, Eron-ded?!

Turngut feels fully at peace and likely for the first time in his life. He genuinely wants to move on to rest, but the only thing keeping him from walking right through the gates, is his love for his friends. If he can find out that they are OK without him, he'll move on to the afterlife. Otherwise, he will delay his eternal rest until he can be sure!

Before the dwarves arrive, Turngut charges at the building and vaults onto the first floor, growling and fixed on the queen. To his surprise, the bodyguards morph into the very things that nearly killed his friend so recently. Shocked, he pauses a bit to long as he looks around for Poppo, to make sure he's not in danger. As he does, he feels the dazzling pain as his arm is nearly cut off from the first swipe of the doppelgängers. Pivoting quickly to face the first, he misses the second lunging in and painfully tearing out the tendon from his leg. With nearly no strength left as blood pours freely from his multiple wounds, Turngut's body begins to fail, but his eyes dart around for his first real friend. Perhaps the only friend he's truly ever had.
Landing flat on his back, unable to move, his eyes spot Hoppo flying above him towards the queen. Time slows down for the orc in his final moments...

H-hoppo? He barely manages to choke out, flecks of blood spewing from his mouth. Hoppo? Hoppo..OK. Hoppo..safe. A small smile crosses Tungut's battered face even as the light in his eyes begins to fade. Realizing this is his last chance to speak with his friend, Turngut rallies enough to bark out, Hoppo! Turngut is.... But his final words are cut off by the vicious slice of the doppelgänger through his throat and with a final gurgle, Turngut lays still, the first peaceful look on his face he's had in his sad, tortured life, his lifeless eyes open staring up at Poppo.

Staring down the queen, while still standing over the body of The Butcher, Turngut doesn't notice the approaching dwarf gang or even Nalia going down. He does notice his halfling friend suddenly take flight! Snapping out of it, Turngut rushes up the wall to get past the Queen's bodyguards.

GM offered me the opportunity to narrate the final moments of The Butcher...
WARNING: The following post contains graphic depictions of violence. Viewer discretion is advised.

Dashing the 50' across the battlefield, the massive, nearly 12' tall Turngut moves with supernatural speed thanks to the Warmind blessing. Leaping into the air, he delivers a devastating flying kick, each of his 24" feet slamming into The Butcher's face. Knocking the bearded man to the ground, his top hat flying a dozen feet behind him, Turngut lands crouched on his old foe. One knee presses into the man's sternum with only part of his 1688 pound body weight bearing down. Leaning down with his tusked face millimeters from the bloody remnants of The Butcher's nose, hot, fetid orc-breath gagging the man as he struggles to breath.

Turngut remember you, Butcher. He whispers, barely restraining his rage. Butcher bad man. When Turngut first see Butcher, Turngut big and Butcher run away. Now Butcher no run. With that, Turngut sits up and allows the weight of his body to lean on The Butcher's chest. With sickening, hollow pops, multiple ribs slowly crack in succession and the man's chest is visibly compresses as he gasps for air. Looking over to Ib and then back into the bruised and swollen eyes of his once nefarious enemy and yells, This for Ib! He slams a fist as big as ham hock into The Butcher's temple. This for trying to hurt Hoppo and Wrinklebutt! A blow to the other temple, this time sending a spray of crimson across the dirt. And THIS for being a bad, BAD man!! Taking both hands into a fist over his head, he drives down on The Butcher's head which smashes into the earth like an overripe melon. RRRoooaaaaRRRR!

Standing up from the body, Turngut faces Queen Vatrya, blood dripping from his clenched fists.

Spinning from the heap that was Ogald, Turngut stares daggers at The Butcher and lets out a terrifying, deep-throated roar. Clenching his teeth, with the gold tusk-ring glinting in the light, Turngut bolts across the battlefield (utilizing Warmind for +10' of movement) and delivers a flying kick to The Butcher.

Feeling the slicing of both daggers into his flesh, Turngut's eyes flash. He sends a massive fist into Ogald's gut, doubling the dog-master over. He quickly follows with a swift uppercut elbow to the man's face and finishes with a solid roundhouse sending the limp form flying back to crumple in a heap.

I took some liberty in assuming that all 3 of those hit (finally!). If not, I think Turngut will take BobE's last instruction and grab Poppo and run!

Snarling, he looks over to The Butcher, but is able to remember BobE's words and stay focused. No longer caring about safety or containing the threat, Turngut stomps at the man wildly.

Tossing the limp dog's body to the side, Turngut glances across the battlefield for his next target. Seeing the Butcher, he sighs, resigned that he'll need to kill that man, but will likely die in the process. However, when BobE gives him the advice, Turngut blinks and seems to lose his unhealthy focus on The Butcher. Then, when BobE charges him with protecting Poppo, the resigned and flat look in his eyes disappears and the fire of true rage rekindles. Looking back at BobE, he gives him a triumphant grin and then looks to Nalia and Poppo. Woman! Hoppo! Let's go!! he calls with a grin. With a final glare to the Butcher, he looks to Ogald and charges, roaring a blood thirsty scream. Now kill you!! Flavor, not mechanical charge. He leaps on the dog-master and wraps him up in a massive bear-hug while sinking his tusks into the man's shoulders. Osgald will get AoO if he wants it.

As Nalia scans the battlefield, she can see that Turngut doesn't look quite right. The green skin of his face has a tinge of sickliness to it and she can see that, although he fights, he seems to move just a fraction slower than normal. His howling face superficially has the look of wanton rage, but Nalia (knowing him as well as she does) can see that his eyes are flat and, perhaps, resigned to this being his last fight.

@Matt - yep. Turngut has 2 negative levels from the wraith that we fought. I asked ben and it's been <24h, so we still have the temporary negative levels unless we had some way to magically remove them. Ugh. -2 to all my major rolls. It's going to be a rough fight!

Already on the verge of snapping, Turngut is able to twist to avoid the brunt of the fireball, however the heat of it sets him off into a RAGE. Nalia's Warmind spell infuses him with supernatural sight to see a few seconds into the future to gauge how to strike best (+1 insight bonus to attack) and then he 5-foot steps to get into range of the Blue and Yellow dog. Trusting Poppo to take down Yellow, he will launch all attacks at Blue and if it goes down will swivel to Yellow with any remaining.

I'm assuming Vatyra is pronounced VAH-tra? lol
Seems to me, we need to suss out if she is really here and either put a stop to her ourselves, or if Francis thinks she's too powerful, at least put a wrench in her plans and/or find her so we can send in an army and/or militia.

The orc is ready for action, but too tired to do anything but look and hope.

After the party rests a few moment, Turngut climbs to his feet. Turngut ready too!

Check out the other room area in the section? Also, to make sure I'm not missing anything, those doppelgängers weren't those people the whole time, right? I can't remember which 4 they were, but one was the Butcher, but the other were allies of ours, right? If we think they were impersonating those NPCs for longer, we should leave immediately and tell the leadership. I'm guessing they were not since they were rehearsing their behaviors, but still...
Also, even if they weren't impersonating them before, I believe doppelgängers have to get close to their subjects to mimic them. There may be a spy in the Order!!

Seeing the look on Poppo's face and having endured "enhanced interrogation" himself, Turngut drags Hobson into the other room and nods solemnly at Poppo after the door closes. Shoving the creature into a chair, he kicks it back over a stool so that the doppelgänger lies on its back, head down. Grabbing the still tied-up creature by the neck, he looks at Poppo and gruffly says, Ready, Hoppo.

Thanks for the NPC reference tool, Ben! Very comprehensive to be sure. Couple of questions: 1) would you be willing to make it editable by all of us. We could update entries as we encounter NPCs. or would you prefer to update yourself? Certainly pros and cons to each. 2) What ever happened to Thraduik Brune? After Rashengrad, did he return to Crowhall or did he stay in the capital? I can't remember!!

Also - for everyone - when can we do another in-person/Zoom session??

Resting sounds good if our spell casters are totally out. Maybe have Poppo or Turngut take a peek down the hole (or at least a listen) to make sure there isn't a crowd down there.

Good idea RE: guards and letters of rec
Also good idea RE: wand of detect evil. I'll second Nalia's request if our quartermaster will approve the requisition of funds.

Any concerns that the doppelgänger can escape the ropes by shape shifting? Perhaps Knowledge checks to find that out?

Upon hearing the plan to rest, Turngut looks questioningly at Hobson. Will Changy-Man get out of Turngut's ropes? Maybe tie him up VERY tightly! Or get manacles.

As the healing of Malphas washes over him, Turngut stirs and finally wakes up after a couple of minutes' power-nap.
Uuhh? Oh, Hoppo. Woman. Did bad man stop?. Sitting up, he gives Poppo a friendly squeeze. He smiles disarmingly at the surrendered guards, seeming to have no memory that he nearly tore all of them limb-from-limb.

Hearing the plan to question Hobson, Turngut waits to go into the room and drags the still tied up creature bodily up and holds it in a readied sleeper hold before any magic healing is applied.

If maintains grapple can: 1) pin, 2) damage, or 3) move
Armor spikes do additional damage on successful grapple check.
If both hands are not free, take -4 to CMB check.
Neither can move (outside of the grapple)
Target:
- Takes -4 to Dex
- Takes -2 to all attack and CMB checks except to grapple or escape a grapple
- Can’t take any action that requires two hands
- Can't take AoOs, can't use stealth (but if they do become invisible, they gain +2 to CMD against the grapple)
