I am one of those players who always wants to try to do something that is not the stereotyped version of a class. So I start by thinking of what I want to do, and then try to fit together classes, feats, and archetypes to make it work.

As an example in PF1, I wanted a dwarf ranger, but not something like Harsk. I instead wanted to lean into the dwarfishness, so I made an underground ranger with the deep walker and guide archetypes, and decided this was the guy the Society sent on missions when they needed to keep a team safe on cave and dungeon missions. With that in mind, I took the tunnel fighter trait and the weapon and shield fighting style to make a very tanky ranger. Since dexterity was part of being a tanky ranger, I started taking two weapon fighting feats, but I didn't want my shield to be my off-hand weapon, so I make the character a very traditional dwarf, fighting with a traditional dwarven waraxe and a traditional dwarven battle helmet.
That was the basic process which went into building Thoradin the ranger.

Did somebody say Darklands? This looks like a job for... me!

I survived Bonekeep 2 and Bonekeep 3 on the same character, and would have played all 3 except I leveled out of tier, but I brought a specialist. (Not a min-maxed combat character, exactly, but a dwarven deep delver ranger is quite a useful thing in a dungeon crawl.) If I see a difficult looking 7-11 dungeon crawl, I'll go into that as well.

Magic resistant (replaces hardy) has the little PFS symbol next to it in Archives of Nethys, which is a positive sign for PFS characters. Additional resources for the ARG and APG both confirm. Looks good. Honor to the Five Kings Mountains!

"I'm Thoradin! I'm here to keep all ye fine folk safe on our trip underground! Pay attention to what I'm doing, listen when I point out a hazard, and we'll be fine. I use an axe and a mithral shield, and I use this helmet as well since me father taught me it's important to always use your head in a fight!"

(Dwarf ranger, deep walker and guide archetypes, armored with a mithral agile breastplate and mithral heavy shield, dual wielding a dwarven waraxe and a dwarven boulder helmet. Decent perception, stealth, survival, and dungeoneering, trained in climb, swim, knowledge nature, and mining.)

Taking a concept character into Bonekeep is like picking Betty White as your quarterback for the Superbowl. It's a cute idea that is going to get everyone on your team creamed.

I took a concept character into Bonekeep 2. My concept was a dwarven ranger with traditional dwarven weapons specializing in underground combat. That worked out just fine :)

I went with dwarven boulder helmet to the crotch for nauseated.

The above is why this character, a dwarven ranger with the guide and deepwalker archetypes, is built the way he is. He's not much of a scholar, though he can make a nature or dungeoneering check. However, he is made to lead the scholars safely through the dangerous underdark so they can find the nifty ruins.
