Can you narrow it down to which class you're looking at? I don't want to have to allow the entire package. I'm not familiar with the rules but as someone who has nostalgia for AD&D psionics I can understand wanting 3pp to emulate it.
Okay so the character I'd be looking at making would be a Githzeri "Zerth", sort of a psionic monk gish.
As far as building it, I'd do an Unchained Monk dip, and the other class would either be the Vitalist (which is a psionic healer) or the Path of War Medic. The Medic has expendable "maneuvers" rather than psionic "spells", but it's utility enough w/ boosts and movement (and still represents a degree of mind-over-matter) that I feel like it can still emulate what I'm going for.
Either option would fill the healer role, and have some cool utility stuff to throw in as well.
Since Elephant in the Room is in play, how should we handle classes that give things like Weapon Finesse as bonus feats? Eg: Swashbuckler, Rogue, different archetypes. I've seen different GMs interpret it differently.
Since we've got a Dwarf Outcast, I'll probably go with a Human Magician or Theurge (happy to let Havocprince decide first if they are eyeing either of those).
I will let Taimat finish their character and that will be the last submission accepted before I make a decision.
Appreciate that Voice, but I've been feeling pretty ill the last few days and don't think I'll have something up today. I don't want to hold things up, so please proceed without me. <3
I have a bit of a suggestion because I really like the idea. It would still require a degree of fiat, but a dip in Summoner would make a second "character" more balanced among other characters. I'd probably also suggest allowing a Boon Companion type feat (or an item ala a Monk's Robe) to help keep it relevant as we all gain levels, though. I'm not sure how well it would actually work, but it's a fun idea.
Really great write-up, Catalyzer. Confusion, longing. A sense of lack, of shallowness in living. The context cripples and builds its perspective at the same time. Thank you.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I actually wanted the name to be Catalyst (which was taken), but Catalyzer is also pretty cool.
Taimat - If you remove the swim speed and jet then I will allow the application. It could be from injury or poison or something and eventually you could get them all back after a bit when racial power isn't so unbalancing.
Oof, that drops it down to 8 RP (plus a few of the things are situational) which is definitely on the weak side but hell, I'm gonna go for it anyway! Thanks for entertaining the idea. I'll shoot for getting my submission wrapped up today or tomorrow!
Oop, another question! How commonplace are firearms? I know Eberron (and GMs!) are kind of mixed on them as a thing.
With it being set in 998 YK, I'm strongly considering a Warforged Artificer, because playing one a short time after their creation forges were destroyed feels like it's ripe with interesting roleplaying opportunities, and being one of the "last", trying to weave technology and magic together to sort of keep the spirit of their people alive feels ridiculously interesting (especially coupled with the fact that I can create a construct at level 4th which might be illegal).
Crafting time will be there if needed. I'll work with the characters who craft. Mostly I am looking for the role-playing of it. But yeah, it's an option. I have never run Giantslayer, so we'll have to see as we go, lol.
I will consider characters from Path of War or Book of 9 swords.
Blues, psionic Duergar are acceptable. I haven't looked at forgeborn before...this is essentially their version of a psi-forged, yes?
Awesome, thanks! And yeah, the Forgeborn is that to a T.
I'm torn between a few different ideas, so I'm gonna write some stuff out and see what really speaks to me.
I appreciate the plethora of information here! This sounds excellent.
Couple of quick questions while I mull characters over.
1. With the artificer on the table, will there be suitable time for crafting? How much will that be handwaved, etc?
2. You said maybe Path of War even though you prefer Book of Nine Swords - does that mean Book of Nine Swords is on the table, or would that also be a maybe?
3. With Dreamscarred Press Psionics on the table, would the Blue race be available in place of the Goblin? Likewise the Forgeborn standing in for a Warforged, or Duergar for a Dwarf?
I'm totally happy to submit a human (which is mechanically probably the better move anyway), but I wanted to ask about the possibility of playing a Cecaelia. I know they're normally a staggering 23 RP race but I got them down to a 14 pretty easily: Essentially, reduce their land speed to 20 (from 30), drop their swim speed to 30 (from 40), remove their +2 natural armor, and remove their tentacle attacks.
This leaves them with darkvision, a swim speed better than their land speed, amphibiousness, jet, tentacle sense, ink cloud, and stable tentacles. It's still 14 RP, but jet, tentacle sense, and ink cloud also only function underwater. I'm new to this AP so I don't know how much of it actually is underwater, but I suspect those are still pretty situational benefits.
Let me know! Like I said, I'm happy to just go human otherwise, but figured I would ask.
Yeah, I've been having trouble creating one in that sense, too.
Mechanically speaking, creating a character in this effectively comes down to which 3 focuses and which 3 talents you get - and you aren't even choosing those six things directly. The backgrounds / careers system (while cool / quick to create with) also tends to steer you in a particular direction which means you're choosing from a limited set.
My gut is that it's probably a lot easier to create characters with an established party, when each person can have a particular role in mind that they're building towards. Or, if you're starting at a higher level and have more options to help differentiate.
But it's also worth noting that there are 10 people who have expressed interest (for what are effectively 4-6 party roles), so I think some overlap or duplication is probably to be expected.
Either way, I'm gonna shoot for getting my character up tomorrow, which I think is def gonna be in conflict with someone else's.
Oh this is exciting! I've played and run Rise of the Runelords, but never beyond book two. I think I am going to submit an Arrowsong Minstrel Bard (with a dip in Investigator or Rogue for dealing with traps).
