I finally tweaked Syeira's build to where I think I like her. I may make minor changes before submission deadline (like switching the con and dex) but she is finished. The first level build is in the profile as well as backstory. I have reprinted it here for convenience sake. Why I want to play is also found here.

Background:

Syeira was raised in the small town of Nybor. As for where she was born she doesn’t know. Her parents tell her one day when she was very young, perhaps no more than three, she wandered into their town covered in dirt, grime, and obviously malnourished. When they tried to question her as to where her family was, what happened to her, or even what her name was, Syeira responded with nothing but silence. Not sure what else to do, Syeira’s parents took her in and raised her as their own.

This is the story Syeira believes and she has no reason to doubt it. Her first memories are of living in Nybor. She has no memory of being found or what drove her from where ever it was before. Syeira loved her childhood. She was always running and rough housing with the other children, even besting some of the larger boys who thought she couldn’t keep up with them because she was a girl.

As Syeira began to mature, she began to develop affinities for magic. At first, it was small things like being able to move small objects with her mind. Syeira took delight in this ability and would use it constantly to prank her friends and parents. When her parents realized that Syeira had latent magical ability, they sent her to train with the town wizard, Vesk.

While Syeira enjoyed learning about magic and how to use it, she hated the rigidness and structure of the instruction. At the same time her magical aptitude began to develop, a strong wanderlust began to also develop within her. Constantly during her instruction from Vesk, she would be caught staring out at the wilderness daydreaming. As soon as she was dismissed for the day, Syeira would go running through the nearby woods. She always felt as if she was searching for something but could never figure out for what she was looking.

This wanderlust feeling continued to grow with age. Finally at the approximate age of seventeen Syeira decided to leave her small town. She packed a small bag; said tearful goodbyes to her parents, friends, and even Vesk; and set off down the road. Syeira didn’t really have a destination in mind when she left but her travels led her to a different small town (though bigger than her home) of Sandpoint.

Upon arriving at Sandpoint, Syeira had grown bored of the loneliness of the open road and decided to stay for awhile. Wanting to be at the center of the town’s gossip and going ons, Syeira found herself seeking employment at the Rusty Dragon. Upon entering the establishment, Syeira immediately went searching for the owner, Ameiko. When asking for employment, Ameiko gave Syeira a once over. Believing Syeira to be too frail for the job, Ameiko asked, ”Why should I hire you?”

Before Syeira could answer, a fight broke out between two adventurers at the bar. Ameiko sighed in contempt and started to turn to deal with it when Syeira just smiled and put her hand up to stop her. Syeira then began to utter a few words and wave her hands. A swirl of colors washed over the two combatants before they fell to the floor unconscious. A third inebriated man, seeing what Syeira did to his compatriots, rushed at Syeira. Syeira quickly side stepped out of his way before smacking him on the back of the head, causing him to fall into a drunken unconcious heap with his friends. Syeira turned back to Ameiko with a grin while shaking out her hand. ”That’s why you should hire me.” Ameiko did nothing but smirk and toss her an apron.

That was five years ago and Syeira has flourished in Sandpoint. She is loved at the Rusty Dragon for her outgoing and friendly nature, often inserting herself in the middle of conversation with many a customer. She has a standing challenge at the Inn to anyone that wants to attempt beat her at a game of darts. (So far she has a twenty-two and three record). Her favorite time of year is approaching with the Swallowtail Festival. Though things always get busier at the Rusty Dragon at this time, all the new people in town and stories to hear excite her.

Why I want to join:
I am looking to join as I have always wanted to play through Rise of the Runelords. I have been accepted into 3 other PbP for Rise but none of them have worked out. Two of these fell apart right after the initial goblin attack and the other I joined in as a replacement at the end of book 1 and the group just wasn't a fit for me. I also made it part way through book two with an in person game, but that group was more roll playing than role playing and I never really got the story. The games that never really got off the ground I loved this character and the way she fit. I feel like I know her and would love the opportunity to bring her back to sandpoint and see where the game goes. I usually play a Syeira as a Tattooed Sage Sorcerer. If selected, I plan on playing her as close to that as possible without taking the archetype.

Syeira looks over the room with a disapproving look. "Its sad, at one point these may have been beautiful works of craftsmanship. Why destroy just to destroy. Such a waste." While looking over the room she keeps an eye for anything that may not have been destroyed by the goblins.

A woman comes up to your table and pulls out a chair for herself and sits down with a pint of ale and a smile. She has a slight frame with dark black hair worn long and loose. Her arms bear strange tattoos. Across her back is a tattoo of a stylized scorpion that you swear you can see moving. Those of you who have spent some time around the Dragon would recognize her as Syeira, one of the Barkeeps of the establishment. "Friends, forgive my intrusion but I couldn't help but overhear. With Rasmorn leaving town and the other one ... Alendree was it... not being up for the task, I would like to offer my services."

She then glances at the thrown mug. She runs her finger around the edge of her own mug as frost begins to run down the sides. She then slides the mug of chilled ale over to the half-elf. "You seemed to have accidentally dropped that. Try and be more careful with this one." Then turning to the halfling, Syeira waves her hand and his ale covered clothes clean and dry, looking like they are brand new. "And you my dear, should watch where you stand. Errant ale can come from anywhere in here." she says with a friendly smirk.

I want to thank you for the opportunity to join your game. As I mentioned to Phntm, this week is kinda busy for me, so I don't know if I'll be able to join in immediately but I should be good to go at the start of next week. I'm going to go over my alias and make sure its all up to date. Few questions for the group as I make final adjustments.

I updated my profile with the character I'm applying with. I also went looking for a trait that really touched on her working on a barkeep and found Affable, so I swapped out pyromancer for it.

1 & 2.) Thats fine. I kinda had the same feeling which is why I didn't include it. I also think I'm just going to keep the racial pyromancer trait. It doesn't really do much but I like the theme on drawing on the angelic blood to fuel her magic.

3.)To clarify does this mean taking a custom Tattooed Familiar exploit instead of the Familiar exploit that works in all ways as the tattooed sorcerer class feature?

On to your questions.
In regards to the Late Unpleasantness, I believe the timeline is as follows:
06/25/4702 - Late Unpleasantness Begins
09/03/4702 - The Temple is destroyed
09/27/4702 - Ameiko takes over the Rusty Dragon.
As Syeira's background has her meeting and being hired by Ameiko at the Rusty Dragon shortly after arriving at town, I believe that puts Syeira arriving in Sandpoint shortly after the Late Unpleasantness

I'm little rusty on the course of events, but during the initial goblin attack during the festival, Syeira would definitely have been helping those she could get clear of the goblins. During the festival, she would have been taking in all the festivities. What she has been doing since is where I get hazy I don't recall the exactly what occurs. When Ameiko gets kidnapped I can definitely see her pushing the rest of the party to go find her. Syeira herself would probably have been keeping the Dragon going until Ameiko got back. After Ameiko was rescued I'm not certain. Syeira would definitely would have wanted to help where she could.

I'll leave the mystery of Syeira's past for you to decide. I have it there as a hook if the GM wants to use it. If you want to work together to decide on the mystery, surprise me, or just leave it alone I would be fine with any of them. Syeira is not actively pursuing her past, however, if she were presented with something I feel she would want to tug at the string to see what it unravels.

As a final note, I have chosen to bow out of the other RotRL recruitment. The other GM is looking to go with an overly large party and I find individual characters just get lost in those. I will update this alias to include all the information for this recruitment, however, it will probably not be until Monday as sitting in front of a computer on the weekend is difficult. I will also be going with the Arcanist build.

I would ask to be removed if there is a large field. I have played in a few large table PbP games and I always feel like the game passes me by. Crunch:

So I kept going back and forth between making Syeira a an Arcanist or a Sorcerer. I made the crunch for both. As you'll notice the concept for both is nearly identical. I do have a couple questions regarding the crunch.

1) What are your thoughts on replacing the aasimar SLA with the stat boosting SLA? I kept going back and forth on it but it felt too power gaming to just pick it.

2) What are your thoughts on Wayang Spellhunter/Metamagic Master Trait. It is a regional trait but there is no way to thematically tie to that region. If I did take it for my third trait, I would choose a different spell than the one chosen for magical lineage.

3) Would it be an issue to fluff the familiar as a tattoo familiar on the arcanist build? I like the concept of the moving tattoos and that one of them is living.

Appearance and Personality:

Syeira stands at 5'8" and has a slight build. She has long flowing jet black hair and piercing blue eyes. She has mystical tattoos up and down her arms. Across her back is stylized tattoo of a greensting scorpion. As you look at the tattoo, you swear that you can see it move across her back. Syeira has a very outgoing personality, loving to be with people. Syeira is very competitive and will often try to turn the most innocuous thing into a competition. Even though she is outgoing, Syeira has a thirst for knowledge of any kind and will go out seeking it.


I've used this character for 2 other RotRL campaigns that both collapsed shortly after the initial attack on Sandpoint (The last one used Pathfinder 2E rule set).

I will work on tweaking this character to fit your build reqs as a Tattooed sorcerer

Syeira stretches luxuriously. Her bed empty save for a spot of warmth where someone had recently been. "They must have left early. No matter, the night was fun." she thinks to herself with mischievous grin lighting up her face. She spends a few minutes contemplating leaving her bed before a knock at the door makes her decision for her.

She rises from bed and with a flick of her wrist and an uttered word, she makes sure she is presentable before answering the door. Finding a page and a scroll, Syeira nods her thanks in accepting it before closing the door on the page's face. As she opens the case, her nose is assaulted by the perfume of their visitor from the before. "Seven hells, I knew I should have checked it for traps"

As she pulls the scroll out and begins to read, all the tranquility of the morning is gone from her complexion. "He was serious about the hunt? I guess I should prepare myself in case the idiot hurts himself." Syeira glances over at her staff and armor. "If recent events are anything to go by perhaps I should find an upgrade to my weapon and armor." With that thought, she finishes her morning preparations and heads out into the town.

We are expecting our first child extremely soon. If he doesn't come sooner, we will be induced tomorrow night. As such, my posting may become a bit spotty in the coming days. I do want to continue with this, but don't be afraid to bot me.

A look of bewilderment crosses Syeira's face. "What a queer little man," she thinks to herself. Syeira comes out of her stupor as Amycus's comment registers. "Yes, I may have to burn this hand off. I'm not certain my magic can make it clean enough." she says with a jovial smile.

"Anyhow, who hunts boar from horseback with arrows and bolts? I always thought they were hunted on foot as you track their trail before facing down the beast with a spear?"

She pauses for a moment as if truly pondering her question before continuing, "Regardless, where were we before we were interrupted? Ah yes, I believe I said I would be getting the drinks." With that, Syeira gets up with a smile and heads to the bar to procure the aforementioned imbibements.

"Great ... one of those 'handsy' guys, lets not cause a scene." Syeira thinks to herself as she disentangles her arm from him inconspicuously. She then turns her body to face him. Syeira gives him a once over, trying to place the gentleman.

As her mind tries to recognize the man, she decides to answer. "I cannot speak for my companions here, but a hunt sounds splendid. The fresh air and the outdoors would make for a great change of scenery." As she speaks a grin can't help but form on her face as her competitive nature gets the best of her. "...and I bet I could out hunt the lot you." Syeira's expression then turns quizzical. "What exactly would we be hunting?"

As the battles ended and survivors all met at the church, Syeira couldn't help but let out a breath of exhaustion. However, the knot at her stomach couldn't be relieved. She had to be sure. Syeira quickly says good bye and thanks to her new comrades and rushes back to the Dragon. Hesitantly she pushes the door open and relief washes over her as she sees Ameiko cleaning the debris. Ameiko looks up with a smile. "Don't just stand there, we open in an hour." Syeira wordlessly grabs a broom and helps get the Dragon ready, thankful for some normalcy on this day.

Days later, questions assault Syeira's mind. "Who would send the undead here and why? There isn't anything here worth this much effort" The questions and thoughts tore through her mind with no answer to be found. People around town started throwing around the word hero for her and her accomplices. "Hero? Me? I'm no hero, I just did what every one else in this town did. Those that gave everything, they are the heroes."

At the Dragon, Syeira felt normal. She could let everything else go and just be herself with the rest of the town: trading stories or cajoling with the customers. One night she sees an impromptu meeting of her new friends. As she makes her way over she can hear the pugilist ask, "Right, mates. Who's got first round?" Coner gets up and replies "I've got it, it's my turn." before Syeira places her hand on his shoulder stopping him. "I'm sorry Coner but I do believe I still owe this man a round for beating up on him in the ring." she says with a smirk towards Amycus. "Please allow me to get the first round."

As the giant falls, Syeira takes several deep breaths before she is calm enough to take in the scene. A wave of relief passes over her as she hears the cheers from within. "Thank the gods. Everyone must be ok in there." She is about to head in to check when she finally notices Velkan on the ground.

"Velkan!" she utters before rushing to his side. "I... I have bandanges" Syeira rummages through her bag and hands Amycus what he needs. "How could I have been so selfish that I didn't even notice he was hurt." With that thought, Syeira looks over the rest of her companions to make sure all of them are ok. "Is everyone else ok?

Apologies... I kept looking refreshing my page and it showed no new posts. So I thought your move was just taking longer. Low and behold, I click the gameplay link and there are several. Apparently I got logged out of paizo's website.

With her mystical energies running through her staff, Syeira rushes at the oversized monstrosity and swings down on it before spinning and attempting another blow, her fear and rage just bubbling beneath the surface. "IF you hurt anyone in there I swear I'll bring you back just to kill you a second time .... or a third"

As the last of the undead fall, Syeira takes a moment to catch her breath while looking over her new companions. "They all appear to be ok, at least they're all walking. " she thinks to herself as they make their way towards the rest of the town. Upon arriving she feels the healing energy wash over her body. She gives thanks to the priest before turning her attention to the sheriff.

Syeira can't help herself as her mouth takes over. "How is everyone? Is Ameiko ok? Do you now what happened? Is there anyone who needs my help?" comes pouring out of her mouth in a single incoherent string. Realizing this, Syeira takes a deep breath to calm herself. "Apologies for that outburst sheriff. Please let me... I mean us, know where we can be of assistance. "

Syeira smiled as the undead started to fall. Their little erstwhile band was working well together. "We're almost through," she says more to herself than to anyone else. With that she focuses on the final zombie(s) and unleashes elemental fury.

As her shock takes down one of the zombies, the second continues to move towards the half-orc who is still fairly banged up from their last fight. Syeira hesitates for a moment seeing the one of the zombies grab on to Amycus before he takes it down. She then focuses all of her attention on the zombie moving toward Velkan. Syeira points her finger at the vile creature and shouts "Hahkpi". A small blue line arcs from her finger towards the creature.

Syeira is thankful when their group moved on to help the rest of the town. Every time they passed a body she couldn't help but wonder if it was someone she knew. When they arrived at the market square, Syeira was relieved when she saw so many still alive and fighting back. It steels her resolve as she readied herself to take on the undead.

Locking eyes with the nearest undead. She pulls a bit of dust from her pouch and flicks her fingertips at the creature as three balls of force fly from her fingers.

As the last of the skeletons fall, Syeira breathes deeply as she let's her staff support her weight. She surveys the field looking for any that they may have missed. As the group surrounds the injured halfling, Syeira follows.

"Thank you all for your assistance with those creatures. The name is Syeira."

Syeira's ears perk up as she suddenly notices the sounds of combat further in the village.

"Perhaps we cut our introductions short. It sounds as though others may still need our help."

Syeira grunts in pain as the undead monstrosity hits her. Looking over the horde, she tries to see how the others are doing. "They all seem to be holding their own for now. Need to end this before that changes."

As chaos erupts around her, Syeira is caught standing aghast. "How... Undead... Impossible..." she sputters as she is caught speechless. Syeira then takes a deep breath and focuses herself. She takes in her surroundings.

Syeira then draws her staff and focuses on it before the staff takes on a slight glow. She then grips the staff in two hands ready for the oncoming horde.

As far as copying spells go, I think for 2e, the steps are as follows:

0) Be trained or better in Arcana
1) Spend an hour per spell level studying the spell (or converse with the person who knows it) does this mean 0 time for a cantrip?
2) Have magical materials to spend equal to table 4-2 (for cantrips its 20sp
3) Roll an arcana check against the DC specified by the DM. For cantrips its around a DC 13.

The Pit and the Pendulum:
Faster than she can blink, the man is moving at her. His speed much more than she was anticipating. It was taking everything she had to dodge his blows. Instinctively, a spell flashed in her mind to slow the man down, which she quickly squashed down.

"No magic here. I can't just react I need to think. He said his brother was the grappler... Just maybe..."

With that thought, Syeira looks for her opportunity. As the man reaches out with a light jab, Syeira twists to evade while reaching out for the man's wrist, hoping to pin his arm behind him.

If I read through 1.6 correctly, Syeira gets an extra cantrip, and then she also gains Quick Preparation as a class ability now.

Life's the pits:
Not one to back down from a challenge, Syeira follows the man into the ring. When asked for a fighter name, Syeira drew a blank look. Fortunately she was bailed out when the man gave his own name. "Sorry, no fancy name, just Syeira will do." She then takes to her side of the ring before setting down her staff and cloak. Syeira then proceeds to stretch luxuriously, preparing for the fight

At the Pit:
Syeira is snapped out of her thoughts as someone calls out to her. She turns and looks to the newcomer "Someone new to town who thinks he can pick an easy win?" Syeira gives him a once over. "He looks like he knows what he's doing. He might actually be a challenge ... if he were sober.

Realizing she's staring, she shakes herself out of it. My appologies, you caught me by surprise. Can I handle myself? I take it you haven't been by the Dragon yet, else you would know the answer to that," Syeira says with a self assured smirk. "Though grappling isn't really my forte, I'm bit more of a brawler. She then extends her hand, looking to give a mighty squeeze when the man takes it as a test of strength. "Where are my manners, the name is Syeira by the way"

Syeira's Wandering:
Syeira continues her wandering through the festival. As she glances over the various festivities, the crowd around the theater catches her eye. "What a large crowd, the theater must be riveting today." She is about to go watch the performance when her eyes fall on the fighting rings which she immediately finds herself drawn towards, in particular, the bare-knuckle fights.

Syeira watches a few of the fights before her competitive nature kicks in; her mind cataloging weaknesses in the fights. "What a weak left hook Marko has and Timon leaves himself wide open for a counter. If any of these guys tried this at the Dragon, I'd have them on the floor in a second" With that last thought, Syeira begins looking for where to sign up for a go with a sly grin on her face. "It's time to show these boys how its done. Plus its always fun seeing their faces when the "little" girl brings them down."

Syeira can't help the look of surprise that flashes across her face. "Th... Thank you." she quickly utters before grabbing her staff and rushing out the door, unwilling to give Ameiko the opportunity to change her mind.

Syeira couldn't believe it. She was sure she was going to spend the day working in the Dragon on what should be the busiest day of the year but instead Ameiko closes it? Best not to dwell on it because now she could go and enjoy the festival. Ameiko really was a wonderful person to work for.

With no particular destination in mind Syeira wanders the festival, taking great interest in all of the newcomers and various bits of gossip. Sometimes Syeira would insert herself into the conversation, others she would just listen like a fly on the wall. Syeira's wandering led her to the foot race she noticed earlier in the day. She spends a few moments watching before moving on.

"I don't think I could win that one ... though maybe if I found a test of strength..." she idly thinks with a smirk as she continues to wander the festival.

I have a rules question for you. On page 379, it says

Quote:
While holding a staff, you can use Somatic Casting actions even without a hand free by gesturing with the staff instead of your hand, regardless of whether you're casting spells from the staff or any of your other spells

Does this only apply to magical staves that have spells or does this apply to all staves including mundane ones?

Thank you for the selection. I think I mostly have the class and race lines down. I'm uncertain how the parsing for the spell slots go. Is the number in the paresthesia the number of slots?

I tweaked Syeira's skills a little, and she is completely ready


As stated previously, I tweaked Syeira from Elf to Human. This allows her to be a secondary frontliner sooner. She'll have Simple and Martial Weapon proficiency and Medium Armor proficiency by second level. She also has a beet more resiliency with a higher Con score and more hp.

Race: Elf to Versatile Heritage Human
Ability score changes: +2 Con, -2 Cha
Background: Barkeep to Scout
Feats: Lose Elf Weapon Familiarity
Gain Armor Proficiency and Toughness


@Vrog Based on the update, I've been toying with switching from elf to human. The concept and build of the character would be largely the same. Is this ok?
