sadly I have come to realize that raising an 18 month year old son is ridiculously time consuming. At best I could run modules, but would never have the time to do all the supplementary writing to make a really good campaign. Maybe in 3 or 4 years when he doesnt need constant supervision and I can steal a few hours a week to write. I just wouldnt want to run a a campaign in a half hearted manner. I would be interested in anyone wanting to learn warhammer 40k or space hulk. I have 2 pretty good armies for that game and 2 weak ones for fantasy, but GMing is just too time consuming to do properly right now. I did buy a case of wrath minis, and all of the supplements that would compliment it (chronicles of righteous, worldwound etc etc) and have all the modules so at some point I definitely will be back looking to play.
Sorry guys.

The PC gets to play matchmaker, a la romantic comedies. Bonus points if it's a good-hearted half-orc swain wooing a beatnik dwarf lady, with unhappy parents on both sides. Crazy hijinks ensue.

- Calistria is in a mischievous mood, and sends the PC to visit a town containing churches of both Erastil and Abadar. Her assignment is to swap the altars from the two churches without anyone discovering her.

Either of those sounds fun. the matchmaker quest would be unusual as it seems to be a lot of role playing with some possible subterfuge and perhaps if it went kind of sideways some combat (like the setting fro their tryst has a lurking monster nearby or something.

The alter swap is also a really cool idea for subterfuge, and maybe even some long term emnity if anyone ver found out who did it.

Cool all around.

hmm, this conversation makes me wonder about the system in general. SO much cheesiness. I just cant decide if it is the rules, or the people using them.

Yeah, it sucks when PCs feel like one person is driving the story lines. I had a guy whine about that once, despite the fact that a great deal of time was spent developing his budding religion and chain of orphanages.

After reading up on Calistria, I like my idea even more. "Likes a good joke"and trickery as well as charm seem to blend in well. Also the trolls could easily be replaced with evil cult, bandits whatever.

Ascalaphus: yeah, i can understand that, but still seems odd. If you have a fighter with average Int. he/she has 2 skill points and really cant do much at all. You don't need to be academically smart to ride a horse, swim or climb a rope. It seems very limiting especially because the DC of skill checks go up. Said fighter can either learn to climb a rope and ride a horse, or swim and climb, or ride and swim, and maybe even all three, but not much else. I guess in the end it is what it is, but I would consider sub categorizing some skills for non-spell classes (possibly others, I am a NEWB to this system) and charging a half point per rank.) Has anyone experimented with this concept?

I wonder about the lack of flexibility with fighters. I played rolemaster for many years, and their balance was that the same points that paid for spells were used to pay for skills. Each skill has a cost based on the character class, but generally for non-academic skills, non spell users were skill machines and could do tons of stuff, and in many ways were more flexible than spell casters. Points also came from 5 of 10 stats instead of just intelligence. I can not for the life of me figure out why pathfinder wizards are likely to be better at climbing and riding than fighters. Sure you get the + for class skills, but at mid to high levels this seems weak. I just dont get why they went this route. That being said, as a GM, if I dont like it, I can change it.

do something seemingly simple that ends up being complex. Say perhaps that they are charged with finding fluffy, the lost cat of a favoured priestess. After some investigating, they learn the cat wandered off into the troll infested forests of no return (or whatever you have lying around). No one bothered to tell the players the cat is not quite a cat, and brings very bad luck to any and all who care for it other than ordained clergy dedicated to the goddess and can only be seen by those who are in favour of calistira (or some other way a cat can get into a troll den without being eaten). Somewhere in the forest the cat has wandered into a troll den(or some other monster complex), and to return the cat the players must take out the trolls who, by the way, ransacked a farmer who happens to be a follower of the goddess and has been praying for vengeance. So really this is a round about unexpected way for characters to further the vengeance aspect of the goddess.

For added fun, nix the invisible to all but those in the goddesses favour, and have the troll leader befriend the cat (charmed perhaps?) This would allow the pcs to take on much nastier monsters than usual since they will all in some way be taking care of the leaders cat, which should cause sufficient bad luck to give them a disadvantage. The cat by the way is much more than a cat. Id give fluffy a character class, and make it celestial cat form, but still with a very cat personality. For added fun, they find the cat, but it refuses to leave until they retrieve his favourite toy located elsewhere in the complex.

Then of course players have to return home. This could be a real hassle given the bad luck from the cat will be hindering them. They may have figured out something was up if the trolls were suffering from it, but if not, have the priestess mention it when the return the cat.

I wouldnt do this kind of thing often in a campaign, but if you do it right players will remember little fluffy for many years, and any time the thought of owing a god a favour comes up you there will be a nervous laugh with a great deal of thought and discussion, and players wil not enter into such deal lightly.

I do also very much agree that under any perspective, the paladin should know beforehand that his action will cause a fall. He spends countless hours studying his religion and being instructed in his ethics code. Falling should not be a surprise.

so much depends on perspective. I think worrying too much about good or lawful for a paladin is kind of a straight jacket. I would consider more what would his god think of it than an alignment. The god of woodland creatures might be upset over this, but the god of protecting farmers sheep might not be. I always think of sir galahad in le Morte dárthur (the ultimate paladin'hevanely knight). He kills a whole bunch of people and no one can figure out how he can be so close to god and slaughter all these people. He tells them the people he killed werent christians so its all good. It is all perpective.

I think that being 'not you', for your external body not to match your internal self-identity or brain wiring, is not much fun. It doesn't actually matter what the mismatch is, only that it is a mismatch.

Would you be weirded out if you were polymorphed into another person who wasn't you? Even if nothing else was changed - let's say your race and gender even stayed the same - it would probably be pretty upsetting to most people for their outside not to match their internal knowledge of who they are inside.

Granted, most powergamers would just cheer as long as something about their stats got improved. I don't think that is a great representation of how a real person would react if their actual self-identity were shaken to the core and their body drastically altered to be someone or something that was not them.

I'm sure misogyny or misandry would complicate the situation, but it isn't actually a prerequisite for a nonconsensual body transformation to be upsetting.

Hmm, my internal wiring not matching my external body. This is everyone over 30 that I know.

I was wondering if the Girdle of Opposite Gender was offensive to transgender players, as it is officially listed as a "cursed" item. Think about the implications. Couldn't Paizo be considered to be insensitive to the TG community in its official consideration of this item as "cursed"?

Considering this cursed item has been around RPGs for a very long time (At least since 2E AD&D, probably even before then) I wouldn't lay the blame on Paizo first of all.

Secondly, I think considering it to be offensive is a little excessive... I'm not LBGT, and have nothing but respect for the LBGT Community, but insensitive? I fail to see how, but that's just my personal opinion on the matter...

Yeah, this item has been around since D&D 1e. I agree with the idea that the mechanics of it make it cursed. Also, really I think for most of us, having your gender altered in an instant without your consent, would suck enough to be considered a curse. I am not even sure TG people should be the offended ones. Women out there, how does it feel to know that I would consider it to be a curse to suddenly be changed into one of you? For what it is worth, I understand if you think being a man would suck, and I'm cool with that.

Hey Eric. I have been to your site. Cool, it is nice to see gamer groups in Calgary. I have always just played with friends, and am new to the "lets hook up to play" thing. Unfortunately I no longer live in the same city as all my old gaming friends, and the urge to play has lurched me into the role of seeking out people to do this with. I would be willing to GM, however, it is most convenient for me to do so out of my home. I am also definitely a GM more than a player. I like playing, I like have a character, but invariably I have to GM. I may be into being a player as a one shot adventure, but would need to know when/what days. As for my GMing, I am new to pathfinder, but like most 40+ guys who have been playing since junior high, I can soak up rules pretty fast. I would like to find 4 players (so, so far 3+ Black Dougal) to run Wrath of the Righteous with in the fall. This would be mid-September or Beginning of October, depending on my holiday travel plans. I am hoping one day a week (the minimum in my experience to keep tings flowing well) on the weekend. If you are interested, or know of others who might be, I can be reached through here. In the fall I will also be living about 2 blocks from a park and ride at Tuscany so if anyone has to bus it, it will be very easy.

ok, cool. Assuming I don't have any trouble getting the modules, wrath it is.

Still looking for people to play in the fall. If you are interested this is in the NW. I al also interested in what Adventure paths you might have played in so I can familiarize myself with one no one has played. I am leaning to Wrath, especially since there is some leading of armies. That sounds fun. In May I will set up an email so I can exchange details with anyone interested, and will likely post for players at sentry box If necessary. id like to find 2-4 players. I am wondering if you are still interested Black Dougal. I am also more prone to lay on weekends, but if needed, could do week days.

All you have to do Reitif, is reply to this post and when the reply box is open look at the code. There is an ooc before the post and a backslash-ooc after.

ooc this? /ooc

hmm

[ooc] does this do it

oh, how od I change font colour?

ok dude got the feed thing going, though I don't really see how it is much more convenient than coming here. Also, you cant enter anything off a feed, can you?

What do you think of the spell idea (points to cast instead of so many per day?). I mean for play by post more standard is better, but I intend on running a full campaign.

Nothing. If I do not like something I simply change it, I usually play the GM anyway =P.

This, of course, is the correct answer. Everything is malleable in a RPG, and therein lies their beauty. It is also why no computer or console RPG will ever match pen and paper.

hey, where do I go to chhose a picture for my alias?

As always the deck is about adding fun, not about realism.

There is nothing realistic about any role playing game. PCs would all be cripples with chronic health problems after the first adventure.

Crit severities based on success level of attack are not about realism, it is fun. It make you more dangerous against weaker foes. And dangerous monster more feared. fun fun fun. Again, though, with the chance for a crit rule (threat I think they call it) this is kind of included. If you wanted to work on crit severity etc, you could just base it off of the second roll. I mean it depends what kind of players I end up with. Since they will be strangers, I dont think I will screw with too much at first anyway.

darn always posting twice.
I did play witht he thaco thng, so I have played 2e d&d

well, whether or not you get a crit will be related to your skill vs your opponent, so the chance of a bum getting a crit on you is not the same as someone more powerful. And of course you fight bums, you just fight more of them. I assum this is likely so in the modules, and in a game cmpletely devised y the gm, anything can and should happen as the players provide direction. If a group of 14th level characters want to go exterminate a bunch of low level goblins, hey why not... It does seem like the crit thing as a measure of how well your attack is based on skill could be very easy to include.

S what is 2nd e d&d the same as advanced d&d?
Anyway, the rolemaster stuff you sent me is all for the version after what I used to play. Fortunately I still have all 11 books from back then.
Looking through pathfinder crit cards, I think the only way to use them in terms of severity is to make into a chart. Even then, some stat rolls will negate some of the effects, so they are almost more like Harn type of crits in that they are more of a chance of specific injuries.

Darn, always hitting submit twice. Too impatient.

*CHOMP*

I hope to never be more than a message board noob. I dont really take pride in the "I have so much free time I spend it on line making meaningless comments to strangers" thing ;).

Move here, and have a real gaming life doom chicken.

As for the warplocks, I am thinking Skaven gunslingers. Oh, excuse me, copyright laws... ratmen gunslingers.

Hey Reitif. I am 44 and I live in Rocky Ridge and playing the fall works for me so sign me up.

Cool. I am getting pumped for it. I almost feel sorry for my wife, as she has to listen to all my blathering, and is going to be my play tester. The more I look at pathfinder, the more I like it. I will definitely be ready and looking for you come the fall, and probably exchange some info before then.

I live in NW in tuscany. I just ordered a whack of pathfinder rules. I want to run a campaign come the fall. I know that is a long time from now, but I havent played pathfinder before or even seen more than a glimpse of the rules. So I have some reading to do. Also, my mother in law will likely be staying here until then.
That said, I have gamed solidly for about 20 years, and I have ran a rolemaster campaign for 3 years, 3 years, and 2 years, and a champions campaign for 3 years, and 2 years, as well as few short run campaigns on sytems such as Harn, and Warhammer.
I am an older guy, and have good experience as a gm. I havent gamed for about 12 years, so I have a lot of pent up gaming to do. I would prefer gaming at a residence, and can offer up my own. I have a game room (which has only been used twice), which is basically a small room in my basement. In the spring I will post something at sentry box, and on this site, and set up an email to find 2-4 people to play, 3 being optimal. I think older people might be beter, but would be perfectly willing to gm for someone wanting to bring one of their kids to play (assuming they are old enough to get the system).
I would also like a group that might be into experimenting a little. One quick look at the basic combat rolls, and I am wanting to try adding the critical tables from rolemaster, which should be easily done. Also, at some point, when characters get a little more experience, I have found leading armies to be fun, and have used a modified version of warhammer to do this. Of course, though, I would omit any of this, or add more depending on the players desires, as this is what should drive any good campaign. I would be using the campaign supplement so players can start business, run organization, plant crops or whatever if they want. I would also be open to either running a preprinted Adventure path or doing a more custom campaign depending on characters desires. Anyway, I ramble. Like I said, I have a lot of pent up gaming energy.

Hey lejnicky
rolemaster crits, and open ended rolls are coming...
