Owner/operator - Railyard Games

Newbie defined as someone who has played only one mission in Beginner Box chasing giant spider below Otari fish plant...

Been reading about intrigue in Absalom and hearing rumours of what exist to north of there in area known as Stolen Lands and opportunities therein to kingdom build!!!

However....in order to get to Brevoy one must travel a great distance...
wondering what Adventure Paths to acquire to best assist in travels....Must be one or two
that helps guide one's adventurers from Absalom itself????

Any guidance most appreciated....

Last post from jenceslav is also most useful...
Need to do some more reading on these "traits" it seems....
and review the "ACID BURST" card again given the advice
received...
Many thanks

Great reply...thanks..assumptions you made correct..
Final question though..
So Valeros in Combat can roll both his STR & Melee dice
+ 3d4 for ACID BURST ????
I really appreciate your help...made my day!

I actually believe RailyardGamesJames is thinking of the spell Acid Burst (just because they asked about that very spell at roughly the same time in a Discord channel). I'm also answering under the assumption that we're discussing the Core Set version of Valeros (because the writer was playing The Dragon's Demand from the Core Set). I'll amend Jenceslav's help for that particular spell . . .

Valeros can use Acid Burst.

Acid Burst wrote:

For your combat or Disable check, banish to use Arcane + 2d4.

DURING RECOVERY
If proficient, discard this card; you may succeed at an Arcane 6 check to recharge it instead.

Valeros does not have the Arcane skill (it's not listed on his character card), so his Arcane is considered 1d4. Therefore, he rolls 3d4.

Also, he is not proficient with this spell (he is proficient with Armor and Weapons, neither of which traits are on Acid Burst), so during recovery he would banish the spell back to the vault.

Yes...the good old "Acid Flask"...
Well I am also a beginner JAN 2023...and I have more interesting true beginner question about this card...

So my character VALEROS has combat d10 +2 for Melee...OK?

He wants to use this spell 0-- Acid Flask...
(1) Can he?
(2) and if so...under the spell's powers one can "Banish to
use Arcane +2d4" so while Valeros doesn't have ARCANE
the card does.. so those powers could be used for the combat??

Am I right or wrong....?

I love your answers and clarity in response ...so I'm going with that for awhile....Is 2019 edition the latest for PF Card Game?

You are correct that you advance the hour to begin each new turn.

...so first card I turned up was a 'weapon' card--"Shortsword" that needs +4 to acquire....[using strength, stealth, melee]..so Valeros strength = d10....but for Melee there is +2...but wait...His strength is going to change every turn??? depending on what d10 I roll?......So that's sort of Question #1

(Not wanting to pick nits, but he check to acquire (or defeat) is a number, not a "plus" something. Just don't want to risk adding any other potential sources of confusion.)

A character's stats don't change per se, they are simply represented by a die (with or without a static bonus depending on skills and check boxes) rather than a number like in the RPG. If you think about it, having a d10+2 for his base combat using Melee will more consistently outperform a character like a wizard with a d4 Strength and no melee skill than an RPG character rolling d20 with +4 for an 18 Strength versus a 10 Strength character rolling d20+0.

I'm thinking the d10 roll +2 might be enough to acquire...but just in case I look in my hand...and I have a blessing 0 card--Sands of the Hour...Question #2...How might this help my dice roll?

It should indeed be enough. Valeros succeeds on anything but a 1 on his d10 in this case. However, maybe Valeros REALLY wants that shortsword. How will your blessing help? Let's look at what it says. (Since it's in your hand, its check to acquire and power when it is the hour don't matter right now.)

Sands of the Hour wrote:

On any check using a skill listed in the hour's check to acquire, recharge to bless.

Two separate powers, as is common for blessings, one to help with a check and one to explore. You're in the middle of a check, so it's the...

OK here goes...Have begun Scenario 1-Rumble Road (In the Dragon's Demand opening Adventure Path) right?...I'm ambling along with the caravan towards BELHAM when these wolves appear...[but first....] I advance the hour glass right? (and I have chosen to play 'Valeros' as character)

...so first card I turned up was a 'weapon' card--"Shortsword" that needs +4 to acquire....[using strength, stealth, melee]..so Valeros strength = d10....but for Melee there is +2...but wait...His strength is going to change every turn??? depending on what d10 I roll?......So that's sort of Question #1

...and now moving on...I'm thinking the d10 roll +2 might be enough to acquire...but just in case I look in my hand...and I have a blessing 0 card--Sands of the Hour...Question #2...How might this help my dice roll?

...I'm on the right track it seems... "Sands of the Hour" Blessing 0 reads as follows after requiring +4 for Arcane, Divine, Knowledge, Perception......"When this is the Hour...No effect"....POWERS......On any check using a skill listed in the hour's check to acquire, recharge to bless. Discard to examine the top card of your location, then you may explore.

Question then: What if my character- Valeros doesn't list any of those as his skills? i.e. he is INT and wisdom...but not knowledge... This is from 2019 edition

Running a Pathfinder game at a store would also help, I think. It would generate interest which would (hopefully) turn into sales for the store.

It's now some 12 years later after this post was originally added.

I am relatively new retailer on Vancouver Island in Western Canada and totally agreeing that running an instore game or regular basis is almost a necessity.

We have a regular Saturday afternoon game that welcomes observers and first time players and we charge $5 per player to help keep the lights turned on.

By doing this in a region of 50,000 people that has never had a game store we have built up a dozen core players that all have switched from D&D 5e in last few months...because of our promo, availability of local stock, and knowledge. (Do we lose D&D sales by doing this you ask? From our experience to date...Answer is "NO" as we have three separate beginner in-store D&D groups playing per week.

Having said all that...I do have a gripe as the retailer who does the heavy lifting of introducing players (and customers) to the PF system. They turn around and start purchasing direct online and the retailer who introduced them to PF gets no credit when hard copy and pdf products are purchased... Seems to me that today's retailer could issue a PAIZO # and membership and that somehow a way could be found to credit the bricks and mortar operations for future online purchases...Some recognition would be nice.

Thanks...that's the answer I was looking for and gather there is an overall map there as well...

Nice to read all the wishlist items and picky thoughts posted in forums...but I'm a newbie and still trying to get my head around the overall view of what's it all about from maybe 30,000 sq.ft level....We've just about completed Beginner Box first adventure below the tavern in Otari....and have purchased "Troubles in Otari"...but where do we go from there???? and what's the story flow for players quite new to all of it...the role playing...the PF setting and game???

All responses appreciated in advance...

We're beginners here...still working out of Beginner's Box...but would certainly like a sense as to the overall world map of Golarion...

What's best crack at it now in May 2022...Is something new coming soon? Or must we just all rely on what's in the new 2e core rulebook?

Nothing available in jpeg or pdf that we can have blown up to wall map size for our players????

There is no poster map for the whole of Golarion yet.

No world map of Golarion yet? Back in December 2020 here in forum you posted "yet"... A number of us would like to see a large wall map...any news "yet"??

Relatively new retailer has new Pathfinder 2E rules, beginner boxes, bestiary guides and startup in-store player group....but seeks advice on where to really begin with stock for startups????
(1) Given the building blocks are in place,
what 2E (3) adventures are best to carry?
(2) What about the monthly adventures and the society with organized play?
If beginning with a regular group....where does one begin?
(3) Would love folks to share their experience with younger age groups?
What about 10=-12 year olds? How about 12-14 year olds?
Thanks in advance.

Also of note: This will let Paizo get their foot in the door of a not insignificant number of shops *only* selling D&D products. I have a couple around here...

This post by Elfeiroh inspired me to make my firs PF post on here...

OK...here goes...New retailer posting after playing himself in first Beginner's Box game last night as "Valeros" and loving it...btw...I'm basically a retired person..but run this games store on Vancouver Island, Western Canada...(in case your mapping skills are poor!)

I've done a bit of rp gaming...not a lot of D&D...but couple of sessions and much much prefer PF....played last night with couple of young 30 year olds (very experienced with D&D--but first timers for PG)....

To stick to theme of thread....My new store is next door to an established older store that sells new D&D and when I opened I agreed not to compete directly...but there are lots of D&D players around and they are signing up to use my games rooms (he doesn't have any)...( I have some old D&D modules that I do sell..but that's about it plus some miniatures...) Anyhow THE THEME QUESTION IS..."How best to move them over to PF"...and maybe PAIZO have come up with answer!!!!

My second question posted here in April 2022....is what adventures should I carry in my store for early players and their DM's??? I have 2E rulebook now, character sheets, bestiary, and couple of adventures..but looking for more input on what to stock? Thought I'd come to those who play...

Oh yes...first game as player...(1) rat (1) spider (1) zombie and (1) other something or other..(forget cause I'm old!!!)...like a goblin but I think not... Gained lots of experience that our DM announced after every encounter...so really liked that part...
