I agree that RPing character flaws- especially ones that impact other players- is really hard in an PbP environment. I have a wizard (that was almost in this game) that is very difficult. When played in person (with my table) he is condescending and dismissive (usually to poor outcomes on his part)- but online I play him as aloof and disconnected/disinterested because I don't want people to misread RP for being a jerk. A large number of my characters have only ever lived in a pbp environment- where I tend to build personalities, flaws, and RP hooks based around themselves only. Quirks, Mannerisms, Visual descriptions, etc that I can have fun with, have full control over, and other characters can interact with as they see fit. If you want to offer fish to my leopard companion? Great! If you want to try to break through my broken common- good! But those are left open for each player to decide the level of engagement in those aspects of my characters. Anyways, those are at least my experiences with flawed characters in pbp. Paemil here included (he is a little gruff, pretty blunt, and not particularly articulate).
