Oleg likes the talk about giant frogs and hot springs and all that.
He looks at the map...."So you guys are going to round out this top area and then hit the river and go up to the origin of the hot springs?"
Svetlana produces some hair ribbons of assorted colors....
Oleg: "Now if it is scrolls you need to order, I can get them shipped in, you just let me know and provide the funds and you will have that scroll in two weeks, give or take....Or I can sell the dagger and use those funds."
Oleg shrugs "Brewing is a bit beyond me, though Svetlana might have something in the kitchen among the pots and pans."
Svetlana walks past and smiles.....
Sense motive DC 14
Svetlana catches you as you are going by...
"Indeed I know for a fact that moon radish stew is Oleg's favorite, if you bring back baskets of radishes I will pay you for them."
Random encounter roll 1d20 ⇒ 15
"I can see about selling it if you want, the man I trade with in Restov is trustworthy."
Oleg describes the area not far away where the woods start...C9
Oleg "I do love me some moon radish stew!"
Oleg holds up three fingers...."Three days, weather permitting. "
The guard leader chimes in. " We don't have the man power to send out patrols and keep dangers away, you could run over to the radish patch."
Oleg suddenly looks hungry...
"Are we expecting or waiting on the others for the charters? Well we have been hard at work here and the catapults are in better shape, I am hoping to be able to fire flaming pitch, so trolls best beware. Some limitation should be placed on settler lands and control of the river. Sometimes people try to lay claim to what others also have need of, the radish patch and fangberry thicket maybe should be communal or at least a place to get seed from."
Oleg shrugs, "Other than that..."
Oleg shrugs "No signs or even hints of trouble. You have received new charters from the Swordlords of Restov."
"I have heard that some groups of settlers expected this way soon. You will want to direct them of course."
Jhod "So one potion of lesser restoration and one to cure poison?"
Oleg "That might be good for the sign over the gate, even with the gate open it could be quickly closed, thank you Quuroog, that's a great idea."
Oleg. "Yes indeed. But could we not build burms and fences and things to spike feet out there?...and throw balls of fire from here?"
Jhod nods. "Indeed you could funnel them into choke points and then blam, the catapult already adjusted to that area."
Jhod: "I was speaking of a one time potion that was more powerful than anything Bokken can usually make, and beyond what Oleg stocks in his fort."
Jhod nods at the suggestion of lesser restoration, "Aye I can see about providing that." Jhod shakes his head about haste "I am afraid that magic is not my sort.....".
Oleg.."Caltrops you say?"
Oleg..."I believe you already have the gift of gab."
Oleg : "So anything special potion wise that Jhod and Bokken can brew up for you?"
You each have a charter....
Oleg "Bokken is the potion maker, lives in a hut just over there. I don't think he has been here the same time as you, but he was in for one of Svetlana's pecan pies just a day or so ago..I remember you went through his place in that initial sweep you did."
Oleg "Well certaintly one idea, though what and how is the question. "
Oleg rolls out his copy of the old map across the table....
"I am glad you have covered the area near to my Trading post. it seems you can either go finish up this area..."
Oleg points to the top left of the map
"Or delve deeper into the woods."
points to the woods where you have not been yet."
"What do you think Jhod?"
Jhod
"Tactically I would say the top area, that is territory adjacent to both the temple and to your trading post. Territory we should both know and control. I can hold back the deep wood if I need to."
"The bandits who raided my stores not long ago claimed their leader was the staglord, but no idea who or what a staglord is."
"Shall we survey the fort?"
Svetlana "Of course he spends his mornings outside in the wilds something about prayer or communing....I expect him back before the gravy gets cold. And all guests eat from bowls, not from my pots or pans."
Sure enough about the time you each start to eat you are joined by Jhod the cleric...
"Good morning."
Oleg: "You are back sooner than expected, I will let Svetlana know we have guests for the meal!"
Svetlana "Restov you mean? It is the capital the seat of power of the swordlords those who issued the charter for exploration. "
Svetlana: "Perhaps next time pork chops for breakfast, the bacon is just too thin!"
Svetlana
"Bacon and eggs a fitting meal for a dragon!"
"And this is Soggy?"
....."is it alive or an undead thing?"
"Today breakfast is on the house, err free today; Oleg is very happy today."
Noticing the others....
"Well come on before it gets cold."
The table is a fine spread, with bread, apples, berries, butter, jellies, and molasses and honey as well.....
Two of the guards come in to eat they are not especially talkative and seem to be in a hurry to get finished with their meal....
If you say nothing to them
They finish eating and leave at which time the captain and the other guard come in to eat......
"Why yes of course, I keep a small supply here, but Bokken the potionmaker is very adept at brewing all sorts of potions he lives nearby. If we go outside we likely can see the smoke from his chimney..."
Svetlana (interupting) "Or his shack burning down from a brew gone wrong."
Oleg "He is a man, but very strange sort."
Oleg points to the South
"Not more than a half hour walk, that way to Bokken's hut."
"I can not say for certain, I hear tales from trappers about a large wild boar they call tuskgutter, I have heard it has taken a horse dead with a single charge, bears, wolves, maybe owlbears, a couple local beasts the tazylworm and thycinth are some I hear tell of, but have never seen. Wanted desperate men, and creatures of unknown sorts.....I post rewards and such here on the wall."
Greenbelt rumor 1d10 ⇒ 4
The bandits are getting braver and more organized, and there’s whispers that they have a new leader—a man who dresses in animal’s bones and calls himself the Stag Lord.
"Yes of course, we are all friends. I think Svetlana was saying the chiefs would bring you your pies from here. Also I can order things from the kingdom of Restov that might not be found anywhere else."
Svetlana "You are all very brave. I think your reward for my ring shall be pies. Evertime you return here or the chiefs gather I shall bake you pies.....unless what else do you like?"
Oleg snorts knowing his wife needs no reasons nor excuses to bake...
Oleg: "Trolls are pretty tough, the fence should hold. Double the pints of oil and torches on the wall, keep the corner fires burning,...offer the lad coin to collect wood. Thank your mistress for the warning."
Oleg laughs...."I am going to have some pie....check the middens bird, the misses butchered rabbits yesterday...."
The guards nod at mention of pie....
"Did you see a little girl?"
"Nope."
"Me neither."
Oleg opens the crate and counts the charters...
"Indeed they are all here. Perhaps you were tricked."
Oleg pauses: "Humans tend to use horses for riding, and these you have are already trained for such a task, humans usually use cattle or goats for food as neither of those animals are good for riding. I can stable and sell the horses, would you want me to request cattle or a herd of goats be driven here for livestock to feed your hungry?"
"A single horse is worth about twice its weight in cow, goat, pig, and even chickens."
Svetlana sets three more pies down...
"Now go slower fellows, this is not an eating contest."
she notices her finger and the place where her ring used to be around her finger....
Oleg: "Those men were bandits, men who rob from others. This is my stockroom as you can see it is a storage place for supplies, look at my wife's finger, you can see where her ring was, for robbers to rob they must find someone to rob, and locally there is no one else. In a society kobold the honest thing to do is to return the stolen thing and receive a reward!"
"Look here I have posted 100 gold reward for my wife's ring, though it is worth less than that. Surely we can do business together."
Svetlana: "Oleg do not make our guests stand at the gate, I can tell they smell the pies cooling on the table."
Oleg opening the gate "Of course come in friends."
Oleg: "Dead you say, all of them? But you killed the bandits? What to do, what to do? It would take months to get another group in from Restov, and no one will want to hearing such hearty heroes met such a horrible end."
The men at arms "We can secure and hold the fort, but we can not patrol for danger even with additional horses."
Oleg: "Wait! The charters clearly fall to the four nations under the treaty. Will you accept the mission of the charter to explore the lands?"
"Of course" says Oleg looking over your heads...
"You best get the heroes, we have been over run by a brigade of bandits, they stole the horses, most of my inventory and to top it all off my wife's wedding ring!"
The men are greeted at the gate by Oleg.....you can hear them....
"We are the men at arms you requested to keep your fort..."
Oleg "Trading post"
The leader of the men continues.....
"Trading post safe, we assume the charter bearing heroes arrived and have started their work."
Oleg "Yes indeed and even made friends with the goblins, kobolds, mites and ratfolk...so don't get to enthusiastic in guard duty."
Oleg opens the gate......
"Business is picking up!"
Oleg:"Will you be back to exploring in the morning? It looks like it will be a fine day, a slight chill in the air early on, but warm enough the remainder of the day."
Svetlana "I will make biscuits, eggs, bacon and fruits, butter and honey for the morning."
"Seems a valid concern....nah it is elderberry wine, though consumed swiftly may sneak up on one."
"You can leave it here, but I can not risk myself to protect it."
1 person marked this as a favorite.

"If you want to look at the inventory we can, orders will take at least two weeks, I could give you coin and you could have Bokken brew you up some potions. No need to decide right away."
Oleg's inventory is in campaign info tab....
@Mahdrig
"I would welcome such tales when you are here."
Oleg inspects the ring....
"Good news lads you have earned some coin from me for bringing back Svetlana's ring. Do you want it in coin, room and board, goods, or do I need to order something for you?"
Oleg: "With Kesten Garess the Commander of three warriors
Cousins John, Wayne and Clint Eastwood along with Jhod Kavken the cleric of Erastil, Kressel is pretty handy with an axe and even young
Nicholas the stable boy can fire a crossbow. That and the initial scouting and battle twice with the bandits I feel like we are safe enough here for you to freely explore where you desire without concern for us back here at the fort."
It looks like a full days ride to get to the edge of the woods; two days if you explore the plains hex between....
Oleg: "Hard to tell from the scale, and all but I think we are right about here.".....points to the area labeled "Hros land" right near the word land....
Oleg points a finger at the old map....
"This area here is both in the charter area and a wood."
Points to "Gnarl Mark Wold"
Oleg: "Indeed a glass of elderberry wine for our guests."
Oleg appraises the antique map Markov brought back...."The scale is off but it should help a lot in your exploration. You guys did good clearing the land near here....so where to next?"
Please use the antique map for in game, but you should designate hexes to explore in the discussion thread using the hex map for exploration......
Oleg: "I am uncertain it seems that perchance him or you lot have opened my cask of elder-berry wine, all seem in good spirits!"
Oleg: "First time the crew went out exploring they gave us the heads up here at the fort, is that still your intention so that we know when to expect you back?"
Svetlana adds "It is easier to bake the right number of loaves and pies when I know."
Oleg "This one talks much, must be a gregarious bard!"
.....aside to his wife Svetlana "Do you know what she is talking about?"..... Svetlana shrugs and smiles...
