Male human NPC

Mr. Plugg's eyes narrow in annoyance, watching his "champion" break down like a beaten child.

"It looks like it." he hisses venomously, glaring at Owlbear, who is looking down and wiping his hand across his nose and sniffles. "Here's your gold. I am a man of my word." he snarls and throws the bag at Ned's feet.

"Owlbear. Here. Now." he commands and the big man dejectedly walks over towards his master, though he falters for a moment and looks back over at Ned with a single emotion plastered over his simple features.

Gratitude.

He hurries over to Mr. Plugg who starts whispering angrily at him and leads him below deck, presumably back to his "room".

100 gold pieces for the party! Jasmine, you can collect your 6 gold on top of it as well.

Male human NPC

Owlbear grunts as Ned strikes him again and stumbles back, his lower lip trembling slightly as it looks like he's about to cry.

"You simpleton!", yells out Plugg, "Can't you do anything right? Use this you and finish the lubber off!"

Mr. Plugg throws a club towards Owlbear who looks at it for a few seconds in confusion and then picks it up and then his face brightens. "I hit!" he says and gets ready to strike.

Male human NPC

Plugg smirks. "Ahhh, more punishment for the new blood." he chuckles and sneers. "Again, Owlbear."

The large, brutish man grins idiotically. "Umm... okay, sir! I gonna beat this one good too!"

Ned moves just a split second faster than Owlbear! There's been something nagging at the back of his mind since he saw the way that the big man moved and attacked Seijiro, and the same thing is bothering him right now when he realizes that Owlbear seems to be blind in his left eye and despite his lucky shot, his movements are sluggish, if powerful.

If you attempt to fight Owlbear from his left side you can make a free DC 10 Acrobatics or Bluff check each round. Success indicates that he can't possibly hit you as take advantage of his weakness.

GM Dice Rolls:
Owlbear's Init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Ned's Init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Ned's Sense Motive Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Mr. Plugg sneers. "Well well... looks like we have a volunteer, and a gentleman too. Fists only. Any magic will result in a flogging." he chuckles and the pirates begin to form a ring around the two combatants, starting to make wagers amongs each other, most of them betting on Owlbear.

"Owlbear, take care of this lubber.", finishes Plugg.

The large simpleton grins, disturbingly, like a child and capers around. "Ahm gonna beats 'im good, yes I wills, yes I wills! Then I get a treat! Yes I does!" he says in a little singsong.

Wow. Somehow Owlbear goes first and the dice gods hate you. Hate you so much. I'm sorry. :(

He giggles, looking like this is some sort of game, and moves up to Seijiro, then swings with a powerful haymaker that cracks across Seijiro's jaw and knocks him clean to the floor, unconscious (9 points of nonlethal damage, 1 point of lethal). Owlbear jumps up and down, capering like a fool. "I did it! I did it!"

Mr. Plugg sneers smugly. "Well, that was pathetic. So pathetic that I think someone else should step up and give us a show. Anyone?"

GM Dice Rolls:
Owlbear's Initiative: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
Seijiro's Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Owlbear's Attack (unarmed strike): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Owlbear Rolling to Confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Owlbear's Damage: 2d3 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10

The night starts without much variation, besides the lashings that both Cog and Ned received, and the evening meal goes by smoothly when the group notices Plugg and four of his most loyal pirates leave the main deck and go below. A few minutes later they return, towing with them a hulking brute of a man, standing closer to seven then six feet in height. His head is shaved and he's dressed in naught but ragged pants and his skin is blotched with what looks like patches of tar and feathers.

"Well boys n' wenches, time fer a bit of sport, some more entertainment for all of ye. Owlbear here needs to be exercised. Who among you is brave enough to take on the challenge?" he turns towards your small group. "You four, new bloods, none of you have seen Owlbear in action ", The large man hoots and growls then capers around as most of the crew laugh at him, "Any of you have the guts to take him on in a friendly bare-knuckle match? I'll even make it interesting." he pulls a small purse off his belt and throws it on the deck with an audible jingle. "One hundred gold pieces if one of you can beat him." he finishes with a cocky smile, confident in his champion's skill.

Ned is hustled on deck, flanked by the two goons and lead by Master Scourge. Mister Plugg, the ship's First Mate, is waiting with a cruel grin on his face.

"Well, looks like Besmara's delivered us a fresh crewman, nice an' healthy and ready to keep the Wormwood movin'. New blood to take the ballista an' enemy cutlasses when see sail." he laughs. "Yer in luck, there's just been an opening. Report to the galley cook's mate. Oh, an' 'Fishguts' ain't gonna be joinin' ya. I'll be keepin' an eye on ye instead." he says with a grin.

Ned, if you want to take the time to do that, you'll have to take the "shirk" ship action, which will also give you time to explore one area of the ship as well. Your job for the day is fishing for food (DC 10 Profession (fisherman) or Survival check). Because Kroop is out drunk for the day, you'll have to make all the preperations which imposes a -4 penalty on your check since Plugg is not going to help you. Furthermore, if you take any ship action other than working diligently, you automatically fail your check (working diligently only negates the penalty).

Amerdan is assigned rat catching duty (DC 10 Survival, Stealth or Dexterity check), Jasmine gets to swab the decks (DC 10 Strength or Constitution check; failure results in being fatigued), Seijiro is on line work today (DC 10 Profession (sailor) or Dexterity check; DC 10 Constitution check to not be fatigued).

Once everyone makes their checks something breaks the monotony of the day.

During mid morning a commotion starts to break out on deck as Jack Scrimshaw rushes on deck to report something to Mister Plugg as Ned is fishing. The First Mate turns to Ned. "You, find Amerdan, Seijiro and Jasmine and report to the bilges. Somethin's been spotted there. You four are going to check it out."

Day Three
Weather: Clear
Heading: Starting to head SW, towards Dahak's Teeth

Allysen, at this point you can head off right to the galley for your daily task and bypass the unpleasantness of Mister Plugg.

After Kroop ambles on deck to distribute the morning biscuits that pass for breakfast on the Wormwood, and nods for Allysen to follow him back down to the galley, Mister Plugg stomps on deck from the officers quarters.

"Alright you lazy dogs, listen up!", he starts and twists his cat-o'-nine in his gloved hands. "Jobs for the day! Sy you're going to..." He goes through the crew, doling out work for the day until he gets to your little group. "Seijiro! Rigging repair. Jasmine!", he sneers. "You'll be doing some rat catching below decks! Amerdan! Swab the decks. On with your work!" he snarls and stomps off.

Jasmine, you need to make a DC 10 Stealth, Survival or Dexterity check to catch and kill enough rats, cockroaches and beetles for a good days work. You only get one roll to determine if you did well enough or not.

Day Two on the Wormwood
Heading: North, across Jeopardy Bay
Weather: Clear

Mister Plugg starts doling out the day's work to everyone and you all notice Scourge watching you and snarling under his breath at Fitts who looks chastised and flecks his hate filled eyes towards your group.

"...Amerdan. you'll be swabbing the decks today. Jasmine, since you managed to do an adequate job yesterday, you'll be running messages again. Sandara, you're on rope work today.", he turns his attention towards Seijiro. "You'll be repairing the rigging today. Rosie will be on lookout. Keep your eyes peeled, halfling, or you'll end up like the one with the foolish name here." He turns his attention to Allysen. "Report to the galley. Ambrose has managed to stay sober today and will have work for you.

Amerdan, swabbing the decks requires a successful DC 10 Strength or Constitution check. Failing the check results in being fatigued at the end of the shift. Jasmine, same rules apply as last time. Seijiro, repairing the rigging requires a DC 10 Climb check followed by a DC 10 Profession (sailor) or Dexterity check.

Also, everyone receives another 100 XP for completing your first day

Male human NPC

"Male or female is irrelevent, Master Scourge." He cracks the whip above Allysen's head, to startle her. "She'll be punished just the same, and she'll remember, won't you, cook's mate?"

He takes a few steps back and readies his whip. "Count out your lashes while you still can, girl, or I'll double them!"

He brings the whip down once 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16 and does 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 points of nonlethal damage, bringing her to 0.
He lashes Allysen again 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 and does 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 points of nonlethal damage (7 total) and she passes out from the pain.
He brings the lash down three more times 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9, 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20, 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 on her unconscious form and does 3d3 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) + 6 = 13 points of damage (4 of which is nonlethal, 9 of which is lethal, leaving her dying at -6).

Roll to stabilize, it's a DC 10 Constitution check but you have -5 on your roll due to your wounded state.

Oh oh indeed...

As Sandara is about to reply, Mister Plugg just happens to be looking in Allysen's direction and notices her throwing away her rum.

"You there, cook's mate!", he snarls in a commanding tone. "Our rum not good enough for you? To the mainmast, filthy ingrate! Don't make me drag you there or it'll be twelve lashes!" He walks over to Master Scourge and extends his hand for the boatswain's whip.

Male human NPC

Mister Plugg grabs the rope with both his hands and starts to pull slowly, dragging the unfortunate sailor across the keel under the ship, with a disturbing grin of pleasure on his face.

The First Mate continues for over a minute before pulling up something that has more in common with butchered meat found in the galley then the screaming man that was thrown overboard.

Jakes Magpie is a mess of flensed flesh and deep lacerations. His left arm has nearly been completely sliced off from the barnacles and he is very clearly dead.

"Let that be a lesson for anyone who thinks they can steal from the armory, or attack me.", states Mister Plugg before dismissing everyone for their evening meal.

Male human NPC

The sound of a man yelling in anger starts to come up through the hold as the man who was chained in the bilges is brought up between the two sailors. They drag him up towards the keel and Mister Plug walks over to him and punches him in the stomach.

"Strip the condemned.", he orders.

The man is stripped down to his smallclothes, glaring murder at the First Mate before he's wrapped in ropes tied to a heavy weight and then tied to another rope that runs from one side under the ship to the other.

"Jakes Magpie. For continuing thefts from the quartermaster, and by proxy, your fellow sailors, and for attacking the First Mate.", Master Plugg sneers, "The Cap'n has sentenced you to keelhauling. Pray to Gozreh for mercy."

The man eyes him with an evil glare. "Ye here me ye bootlickin', lickspittle, whoreson, ye'll not..."

Male human NPC

Dusk comes upon the deck of the Wormwood and the crew speaks in whispers as Mister Plugg comes up to the mainmast.

"Seijiro!", he calls out in a commanding tone. "To the mainmast, now!" He motions for Master Scourge to come towards him.

Seijiro notices that a few of Mister Plugg's toadies have seen him and are eagerly edging towards him, probably to wrestle him to the post if he hesitates.

Male human NPC

"Useless fool of a boy!" he snarls. "At the 'Bloody Hour' tonight, it'll be three lashes from Master Scourge's whip for you! Thank your gods that the ship didn't get damaged or it'd been a dozen with the cat." As quickly as his anger erupted, it's gone again.

"You can be the entertainment before the main event tonight.", he says cryptically before dismissing the crew.

Male human NPC

Mister Plugg is a cruel looking, serious man who carries himself with confidence and discipline. The way he holds his cat-o'-nine suggests skill and there's a beautifully crafted cutlass with a skull shaped cupped guard hanging from his belt that doesn't look decorative in the least.

"What sort of fool name is that?", he asks. "Since you're so keen on climbing, go back up to the nest and keep a lookout and the gods help you if anything get past your eyes. Move!"

You need to succeed on a DC 10 Climb check and a DC 10 Perception check to complete this job.

Male human NPC

The First Mate turns towards, Seijiro.

"Rigger, what is your name?" he barks out.

Male human NPC

The sadistic First Mate and several crew members laugh loudly at Amerdam's fall, doubly so when they see, and hear, his ankle snap.

"By Besmara you worthless cur, you haven't even started work and you're already fit to be thrown overboard.", he sneers, until he sees the healing magic reset the bone. "Healer are you? You'll need those skills to keep the skin on your back if you're as useless as you look." he chuckles darkly as he runs his fingers down his cat-o'-nine.

He turns towards the two women, eyeing them both. "I don't care where you think your skills lay, elf.", he quickly reaches out and grabs one of the knotted ropes, swinging it at Jasmine.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 to hit. Jasmine takes 1 point of nonlethal damage as the knotted end of the rope strikes her on the shoulder.

"The next words out of your fool mouth towards me today will be 'Aye, sir' and nothing more. Is that clear?"

"You.", he points to Allysen, "You're a cook's mate now. Report to Ambrose Kroop in the galley. Now!" he dismisses the young woman from his thoughts and smirks at the other two.

"You two are assigned swab duty. Master Scourge, get these two lazy lubbers some work!"

Male human NPC

"Enough!" barks out the First Mate. "You up in the crow's nest, back down on the double!"

He turns his attention back to Jasmine, his eyes dangerous slits. "Watch your tongue, girl. I'd sooner treat Cap'n Harrigan's crew to a scorpion than a knife-eared snake." he sneers. "Keep it up and you'll provide entertainment for the crew during the 'Bloody Hour'."[/b]

"You there.", he asks the kitsune, "It's you're lucky day. You get to be the new rigger." he smiles nastily.

"You can't climb", he states matter-of-factly to the three of you left. "Can any of you cook?"

Male human NPC

Mr. Plugg sneers at Allysen as she continuously gets tangled in the rigging and despite making it up a good fifteen feet, falls.

1d6 ⇒ 1 point of lethal damage from the 15 foot fall and Allysen is prone; she may attempt a DC 15 Acrobatics check to avoid damage and land on her feet.

"What's the matter, boy?", he snarls, "Back up the rigging! Never been on a ship before, lubber?" He punctuates his sentence with a crack of the cat-o'-nine.

His eyes narrow at Jasmine. "What's so funny, wench? Can't climb some simple rope? Maybe we should put you in the hold as a pleasure slave! To the nest before I strip yer hide!"

His eyes narrow as he sees Seijiro more than halfway up the rigging with ease and tightens his hand on his cat-o'-nine, annoyed that he's being denied a chance to bully because his orders are being followed to the letter... for now.

Male human NPC

Mr. Plugg looks down on you all and smiles unpleasantly.

"The Captain has tasked me with making you into pirates and that is what will happen. I do not have time for idle chit-chat. I do not care about any of your opinions in this matter. They are irrelevant. I have places to fill and I will fill them."

He takes a few steps towards the group. "Behind me is the mainmast. You four.", he points to your group. "Climb to the crow's nest, on the double!"

The crow's nest is 60 feet up and requires a DC 10 Climb check to make any progress. As a reminder, you only move at quarter speed while climbing, unless you make an accelerated Climb check (at a -5 penalty on your roll), in which case you can move at half your speed. PCs who aren't keen on following Mr. Plugg's orders can attempt a Bluff check to try and make him think that you're obeying him without question even though you're not really trying.

I'll submit Brynjolf here as well.

His alignment is NE but can be switched to N if you don't allow evil characters.

1d100 ⇒ 84
1d100 ⇒ 99
1d100 ⇒ 50

As for creation points, I'll probably jack up to 25 point buy and snag a bonus feat. Because feats are fun!

Brynjolf's backstory is now live. It could use some polishing, but the gist of it is there.

I'm definitely still here. I've been harassing my group to play this adventure path since I first heard of it but only one player is as gung-ho for pirating as I am.

Brynjolf is pretty much ready to go. There's just an aspect to his backstory that I'm mulling around at the moment, but the rest is pretty much ready.

Thar's the beginning.

I did originally envision him as being evil. It's hard to picture a Viking sea reaver type that looks back at his ancestor's career as a Big Bad Pirate of the Shackles and goes "I WANT THAT!" as being anything but.

He wants the loot, the fame, the fortune and the beaches.

*shifty eyes*
