A night of revelry at the Formidably Maid sees four unlucky patrons become the latest additions to the crew of the Wormwood. Will the newcomers thrive in their new positions or become food for the sharks?

The bilges are a foul, damp place with thick cobwebs above and 1-2 feet of dark, brackish water that stinks abominably below. A ladder leads up to a trap door that opens in the lower hold, and a single bilge pump rests near the stern. There are also six sets of manacles fixed to bulkheads in the forward portion of the deck, in one of them is locked a disheveled looking man who is falling in and out of consciousness. You can also hear skittering and see movement from the large spiders in the cobwebs above.

Discarded crates and boxes packed with straw lie within the room.

Despite the back-breaking work, you're able to work the pumps with ease and are still pretty hale at the end of your shift.

Male human NPC

Mister Plugg is a cruel looking, serious man who carries himself with confidence and discipline. The way he holds his cat-o'-nine suggests skill and there's a beautifully crafted cutlass with a skull shaped cupped guard hanging from his belt that doesn't look decorative in the least.

"What sort of fool name is that?", he asks. "Since you're so keen on climbing, go back up to the nest and keep a lookout and the gods help you if anything get past your eyes. Move!"

You need to succeed on a DC 10 Climb check and a DC 10 Perception check to complete this job.

Once he makes it up to the crow's nest, Seijiro relaxes a little and keeps watch as best he can, though in truth it's not hard work... there's not much else to do up in the nest alone.

perception check 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
perception check second try 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Still, despite not much else to do, he manages to be distracted for part of the day, watching the other sailors at work in the riggings and down below on deck, having a chance, too, to watch the interplay of the officers, if only at a distance.

Game Master

Seijiro did not have a good day. After being subjected to a tirade of insults by Mister Plugg when he couldn't make his way up the rigging, Seijiro missed spotting some shallow water that came close to damaging the ship. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for the ship, another rigger spotted it in time and Mister Plugg was not pleased.

Male human NPC

"Useless fool of a boy!" he snarls. "At the 'Bloody Hour' tonight, it'll be three lashes from Master Scourge's whip for you! Thank your gods that the ship didn't get damaged or it'd been a dozen with the cat." As quickly as his anger erupted, it's gone again.

"You can be the entertainment before the main event tonight.", he says cryptically before dismissing the crew.

Seijiro scowls at this... Five years I've been working on board ships and never felt more than the bare touch of a lash til now... He cringes slightly at the idea, and finishes his day's work, hoping, but doubting, that Master Plugg might forget by day's end. Entertainment? This is entertainment? And what is a main event? Maybe I don't really wanna know.

Since I didn't take the +4 for working diligently - didn't read your post early enough, lol, Seijiro will do a little exploring when he's down from the crow's nest.

So in reading the game play tab, Seijiro (with the funny name) has failed his working task and will get whipped, 3 lashes. (Jasmine tingles with excitement).

Amerdan has successfully completed his bilge duties.

Jasmine has successfully completed her running duties and misses out on the the pleausure of he whip on her skin.

Allysen has yet to make the roles.

Is that correct?

Game Master

That's right.

Seijiro, during your shift you do get a better layout of the ship from your vantage point. The Wormwood is a three mast sailing ship that you'd estimate is about 100 feet from stem to stern, and 30 feet wide amidship. You notice on the poop deck that there's an iron cage holding a body hanging from the mizzenmast, and there's a parrot that won't move away from it. Captain Harrigan spends most of his time in this area and you see Mister Plugg occasionally leaving his supervision to speak with the Captain. You also note that none of the pirates approach the poop deck while Harrigan is there. While you do try to take a better look around when the First Mate is distracted, you don't notice anything of note before you have to scramble back to the crow's nest.

Game Master

Allysen, here's a better description of the galley.

The cramped and chaotic kitchen holds two wooden worktables, several wooden cupboards, and two small stoves against the port wall, as well as virtually every cooking utensil imaginable and a frightening array of meat cleavers. A score of chickens and three goats wander freely throughout the chamber; the goats are meant to be caged, but have a distressing tendency to escape their bonds. There is also a big, plump gray bird with ungainly legs and a prodigious beak that is languishing in a cage. The kitchen is a madness of dirt, food, and knives, and finding anything in here is a nightmare (requires a Perception check). The stoves are perpetually lit, and large cauldrons bubble away atop them all times. A huge array of spices mingle with barrels of rainwater, two tuns of rum, cupboards full of ship’s biscuit and salted beef, barrels of sauerkraut, and a small supply of fresh vegetables.

Sure, I'll shop at the quatermaster's store. So I have a 17 instead of a 19

Allysen Makes her way to the quartermaster's in between bouts of spearing turtles for soup. She first takes a measure of the Quartermaster before looking to see if there's any of her gear behind the person.

"Ol' 'Fishguts' must be deep in the bottle ta send ye here for food. Yer new here, pup. I just dole out the rations. Ye want ta buy somethin', here's the place, ye want ta find ingredients, look around the galley!"

While it looks like everything is locked up in lockers, trunks and chests your sharp eyes pick out that the bolt on the door to the quartermaster's shop is unlocked. With your experience on ships, you know that the area is always locked, even when someone is manning it.

There seems to be two camps of sailors. Those that are toadies for Mister Plugg and Master Scourge, and those that give them a wide berth. You recognize that the group of six sailors who were with Master Plugg when you were first woken up this morning are the ones that spend time closest to the boatswain, snickering at his crude jokes and doing what they can to stay on his good side. Jasmine turns her attention toward the Mainmast but not before she locks each of the scallywags in her memory. Definately, keep an eye on that lot.

While still blended in with the crowd, Seijiro attempts to slip the dagger under his shirt and into his haramaki. He makes note of the lady without spending too much time studying her, so as not to attract attention to the little exchange.

sleight of hand 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

He skulks around the edges of the crowd, eying Plugg & Scourge and their six toadies. Finally he comes closer, not wanting to give them reason to increase the punishment in any way, but still not actually presenting himself to them either... Just close enough to be considered 'there'.

Nice lady... I'll have to get ta know her better, for sure. Is she on my side, or just has her own agenda? I guess I'll find out in the fullness of time.

Amerdan stumbles back, reaching for the wall behind him as the man named Magpie spits his words at him. Eyes widened, Amerdan RUNS out of there, barely hearing the rest of Magpie's words as he refuses to look behind him. The Stormspeaker is rarely frightened, but something about that man chilled him to the bone.

Feel free to have Amerdan end up wherever you need him. He's running on autopilot.

Game Master

After running for a bit, Amerdan gets forced back into the bilges after being screamed at by Mister Scourge and threatened with seven lashes at the "Bloody Hour". For the rest of your shift, Magpie continues to fall in and out of consciousness but stays silent.

By the end of your shift, you can't wait to get out of there and it doesn't take much encouragement for you to go up on the main deck, where there is fresh air.

Looks like everyone is on, or approaching, the deck at Bloody Hour.

Yep.

"Aye sir."

Allysen nods her head in appreciation. She was taking a liking to the old grubby cook. She'd have to make sure she got some recipes out of him later.

She hurriedly finishes her half of the orange and heads up to the deck. She could feel the tension in the air. Something about how some of the crew members were buddies with Scourge and Plugg made her uneasy.

Have the look of snitches and hugs and the scent of brown-nosers. definitely need to avoid that lot.

Dusk comes upon the deck of the Wormwood and the crew speaks in whispers as Mister Plugg comes up to the mainmast.

"Seijiro!", he calls out in a commanding tone. "To the mainmast, now!" He motions for Master Scourge to come towards him.

Seijiro notices that a few of Mister Plugg's toadies have seen him and are eagerly edging towards him, probably to wrestle him to the post if he hesitates.

Oops, I thought I was running out after my shift is over...! Oh well, one more reason to hate Mister Scourge probably couldn't hurt.

Amerdan looks around at the crew on board with shifty eyes, tugging at his garments, trying in vain to conceal the smell of filth.

Seijiro sighs and heads toward the mainmast, not exactly hurrying towards his fate, but not quite slow enough to require encouragement from Mr Plugg's bully boys. He moves up and stands before Mr. Plugg with a resigned look. "Aye, sir," he says morosely.

Male human NPC

Master Scourge grabs Seijiro roughly and pulls the kitsune's shirt over his head before tying his hands to the ropes hanging from the mainmast.

"For dereliction of duty, three lashes!", barks out Mister Plugg.

Master Scourge grins sadistically and swings his whip once, twice, three times in quick succession.

The first lash 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 results in 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 points of nonlethal damage.
The second lash 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 results in 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 points of nonlethal damage.
The third lash 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 results in 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 points of nonlethal damage for a total of 12 points of nonlethal damage.

(Just a note here: the attack rolls are just there to make sure that Master Scourge doesn't roll a natural 1. He doesn't have to hit AC for the damage to be applied when you're tied to the mainmast during punishment.)

The pain is so intense that by the third lash, Seijiro passes out. Mister Plugg grins smugly as Master Scourge unties the unconscious kitsune and lets him fall unceremoniously to the ground.

"A virgin to the lash! An' I was so gentle. Soft, this one is.", Master Scourge exclaims to much laughter from his toadies.

Jasmine having seen her share of lashes does not flitch. She knows not to look away from the punishment or else risk facing a similar fate. Yeh, I think he will be a valuable ally.

Game Master

One of the sycophants drags off Seijiro's unconscious form and leaves him on the starboard side of the main deck as another two make their way down to the holds.

There are a few minutes to spare before they return if anyone wants to RP.

Seijiro swoons after the second lash at 0, staggered, already hanging limp, his only thought to hang onto his human form. When the third lash strikes, he falls limp when everything goes black. Totally unaware of being cut loose, he lies insensate on the deck, unheeding of the laughter.

Amerdan walks up beside Jasmine. Still looking ahead at the Tien man being taken away he says, "For your assistance earlier, thank you." His voice is solemn and detached, his face fixed forward, never looking directly at her.
