Thanks for the game, John. It was awesome! Very nice haunted house scenario, it would be cool to play this late at night with creepy ambient music playing.

Although this was probably the worst possible scenario to try the mesmerist :D

Edit: A question about the chronicle... Even if we played this in tier 8-9, can the chronicle be for subtier 5-6? Then I could apply it sooner for Drusilla (who is just 1 XP from level 5)

Undead! Why it has to be undead all the time! And undead spellcaster! Oh, fate, you're really adding insult to injury

I hate this f*cking place!

Penetrating the creature's mind seems both very difficult and extremely repulsive, so Meligaster feels he better come up with something different. He drops the Wand of Slow, the useless stick it is. If he cannot harm the bïtch, at least he can try ruin her plans while his friends pound the shït out of her. Meligaster wiggles the fingers of his free hand, and points those deadly appendices towards the floating pile of guts - trying to make as recognisable rude gesture as the somatic movements let him.

"Come on, bïtch. Try your worst!"

"Well, I don't know if it's a weakness or not, but she does fine have a veeeery fine pair of..." Meligaster's sentence leaves hanging mid-air, as he witnesses their attractive adversary dismantling. Speechless the halfling stares (but not in his normal, effective way) innards raising from the body.

Surprised, but satisfied with the efficiency of the Slow spell, Meligaster releases his grip on the wand, and lets it drop on the floor. He directs his mesmerizing stare towards Larry, and blindly gropes for another wand on his belt - the one they just found.

Again, not knowing the details of casting the spell inside, the halfling shakes the wand in patters and points it at Larry, hoping for the best.

"Bibbidi bobbidi Boo!"

Hmm, if I understood correctly I cannot give the chronicle to Amaranti, since he's lvl7? No other characters really close to level 7, but Drusilla is the closest, so let's put this in her queue.

Player: Jyri
Character: Drusilla D'Alazario
PFS#: 96960-6
Faction: Grand Lodge

Halfling Mesmerist 7, HP 54/59 | AC 20, Touch 14, FF 18 | Fort: +7 Ref: +10 Will: +14 |Perc +10 | Init: +2 | CMB: +3 | CMD: 16 | Speed: 20 | Spells 1st: 5/6 2nd: 3/4 3rd: 2/2| Tricks: 8/10 | Touch Treatment 8/8 | Wand of Slow 13/13 | Active conditions: Invisible (7 minutes)

Unfortunately Meligaster was flat footed, so he couldn't trigger the implanted trick on Mavaro..

"Dead, dead... The whole place is crawling with deceased. What's a mind bender to do in here?" Frustrated he may be, but isn't planning to give up. He moves behind Mavaro, and draws his wand of Slow. Although the bound in the wand isn't particularly powerful, the effect would really win the day. He focuses his stare on Chuck, and starts wiggling the wand towards the enemy, as if trying to shake the spell out of the device.

UMD: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (8) + 15 = 23

Swift action: Hypnotic Stare on Chuck, -2 will saves and attack rolls. Standard: Cast Slow on Chuck and Larry, DC14 will save.

Meligaster will move behind Mavaro, unless Mavaro wants to 5ft step there. If Mavaro steps back, Meligaster stays where he is and casts he spell just on Chuck. I think Meligaster needs to see the targets for Slow?

Not a single point spent in knowledge ranks...
"I know, I know! I've heard garlic works, it repels vampires! And we need a wooden stake to kill it! Hmm, maybe this magic wand is close enough.." Meligaster says, and picks up the Wand of Acid arrow from the Wayang corpse.

Unless someone else want the wand of acid arrow, Meligaster can take it. It's not on his list, but he has +15 UMD

"Ready to move upstairs. Lead the way, Mavaro. I'll be right behind you." the halfling says, and casts Invisibility on himself.

Yeah, Mental Block is quite powerful, I think it's lvl 1 only for Mesmerists'. Oddly it's a divination spell...

"Mavaro, dear... Don't be so surprised. If you you were a wizard of terrible might and frail body, and from a group of enemies one particular individual comes charging in swinging a sword, which target would you choose?"

Meligaster walks closer to the unmoving enemy, and pokes it a few times with his sword to make sure it's really dead. Quickly he empties the wayang's pockets for any valuables or utilities. And once the body search is complete, he uncorks his last remaining healing potion and drinks it, licking every last drop from the vial.

CMW potion: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (7, 6) + 3 = 16

"Thanks for the extra speed, Erasmus. Would be a bother to cross this slippery surface otherwise"

Meligaster crosses carefully the icy floor, and closes in on the flying un-invisible enemy. The bastard escaped the mesmerist's stare earlier, but there's more where that came from. The halfling's stare penetrates the enemy creature, and the halfling starts roaming in its mind - locking access to its procedural memories and preventing it from drawing upon its experience and expertise.

Swift: Stare. Standard: Cast Mental Block

Mental Block: DC 16 Will save (remember -2 from stare) or the target loses all skill ranks, spells known, spells prepared, and activated feats, as well as its extraordinary, supernatural, and spell-like abilities.

"You sure talk big for such a small guy.." Meligaster says, oblivious to the irony. "We'll get you.. uh.. soon enough!" He grabs a healing potion from his belt, and drinks the peppermint-flavoured liquid quickly. Experienced mesmerist as he is, he has no problem keeping his eyes locked at the revealed opponent while he drinks. And now that the spellcaster is located, his invisibility doesn't offer him any protection for the halfling's mystical stare.

assuming Mavaro tells the location of the possible enemy. If he doesn't or if there's no enemy, ignore this...

Wisps of smoke rise from Meligaster's hat and shoes, but he survived the electrocution. The angry, frustrated halfling reaches for a scroll on his belt, while trying to locate the enemy where Mamaroneck pointed.

"You are lucky I'm not wearing my favourite Feb. Had you ruined it this way, I'd rip you to pieces!" he shouts in the enemy's general direction, and opens the scroll.

"ಡಿಂಗ್ ಡಾಂಗ್ "

Feel free to tell him off... :)

Meligaster leans over to the pool, about to dip his finger in, but withdraws before he connects the dirty water. "Say, Estra... would your late hubby mind going for a quick dip? I doubt he'd mind getting himself wet and dirty."

Unless the water is poisonous or corrosive, that is. I wonder how that'd affect the old woman's spirit companion..

The halfling casts Detect Magic to see if the water is somehow supernatural, or just plain, mundanely disgusting.

The writer sure seems to like haunts :)
I wonder if we are doing this wrong... I mean fighting with the haunts is pretty difficult - and we have a Medium to beat them. The average PFS party would not have a dedicated haunt-fighter, and would have very few means to inflict damage to the haunt. If Cure spells don't work, then many teams would have no way of defeating them by battle...

So, instead of going SOP breach-and-clear, should we be solving the mystery and releasing the haunts somehow?

But I have no idea how to do that... :)
Maybe have a chat with the waitress?

Meligaster groans when yet another haunt starts manifesting. "All yours..." he sighs, and backs out from the room. Once in the safety of the previous room, the halfling taps lightly his belt where the Wand of Slow is resting.

Is there a pawn shop in the village... Maybe I could trade this wand to one with healing spells..

Meligaster has a couple of Cure potions, although I doubt it could be used against haunt. Having said that, would the CSW work even as a spell? It has a target of "Creature Touched", and based on John's earlier description, haunt is not a creature...

Meligaster looks nervously at his companions while biting his nails. He knows some of the others have more expertise in education, and perhaps will remember some way to get rid of the haunt.

"Take you time, take your time. It's not as we're in any hurry here. The barrel of ghostly wine looks terribly inviting, just like bar-hopping in Docks District back home."

If there's no info on the haunts weakness before Meligaster's turn, he'll take a move action to exit the room

ok, a place, not a creature, got it... I'll not use the spell, but otherwise no retcon needed, there's not much Meligaster can do here

Meligaster stares in horror as the ghostly men drag Estra's companion to the barrel, trying to drown him.
"Uh, you seem to be doing just fine here" the halfling's voice is shaky as he takes a silent step backwards. "I... I will be guarding the rear, so no one can sneak up on us"

Any ideas how to get rid of the haunt? Besides positive energy and Erasmus' ability.. Oh, could this be the source of the wine oxidizing? Not sure if it gives any clue for the haunt...

BTW, couldn't Honaire take the incorporal form, making him quite efficient scout?

"Feel your eyelids getting heavier..."

"And heavier...

"You can close your eyes now, and just concentrate on my voice..."

"Just how old was this waitress?? This happened 90 years ago..."

How would spells like charm person work on this situation? Can we charm our possessed ally? Plus, Meligaster and Rivani can affect undead with their mind-affecting spells... We are very low on positive energy, I think we barely have the items for our own healing. So our best bet would be to find out this haunt's vulnerability. Erasmus could also damage it, but well, he's not in control :) Can anyone grab and pin him?

As he stated earlier, haunts are not exactly Meligaster's speciality. He was counting on Erasmus' talents, but that plan fell short. Fighting doesn't quite work, the halfling suspects poking Erasmus to death would just release the haunt to cause havoc with the rest of the group. He remembers there was some ways to destroy a haunt, related to the event that created it in the first place. Keeping his distance, the halfling starts speaking to Erasmus, who is the haunt (addressing him a lady makes Meligaster giggle a little).

"Oh, my lady, please do not be so hasty to depart, and deprive us of your company. We travelled from faraway lands to aid you, so let us help. Who is this 'her' you speak of? Tell us, and we'll take care of her."

While waiting for an answer, he turns to Mavaro, whispering: "Hey, if this work... You're the big man of the group, grab the guy before he runs off and gets himself killed"

"Strange advisers? How peculiar..." Meligaster commens, stroking his beardless chin. The halfling locks his gaze into the man, waves his hand and resumes his deep, pleasant voice. "Tell us all about these adviser."

"Mindless?" the mesmerist turns dramatically towards Rivani. "I gather you do not mean these peasants? The mind of the Great Meligaster knows no barriers - it penetrates also those of the long since dead and those of crafted of dead matter!" he proclaims, but adds in much lower voice: "But I admit it is much harder, and doesn't always work."

Perhaps Mavaro and surprisingly Yoon are the best frontliners. No one is traditional tank quality, but Meligaster can give the melee guys and gals some extra defences with his tricks.

BTW, I agree with Jack that Galt is the closest thing to France. But I think people in Galt speak Taldan? Whereas Varisia is bit more difficult to place. Many Varisians are described as gypsies, but are the townsfolk as well? Besides, French is an excellent 'accent language' so I'm fine using that as Varisian :)

"Hey Mavaro, are you trying to impress us language skills, or do you just have gaping holes in your Taldan vocabulary?" Meligaster seems even more irate than normal. Maybe it's the long journey on the boat, or maybe it's just his normal moodiness. "But if it's a speech impediment, I'm sure we can fix that. Just let me know, and Doctor Meligaster will fix you right up," he adds, winking.

But please keep the french, it's great!

The halfling strolls around the streets, staring and sneering at the locals. He stops by different street vendors, takes a look into their offerings, makes a face and continues his walk. "Oh my gods, tinks everywhere. Crooked tink eyes, smelly tink food, funny tink talk everywhere. Hey you, boy in the horrible-smelling-rice-booth! Yes, you! CAN. YOU. SPEAK. TALDAN? You can? Excellent. Now, look deep into my eyes."

Meligaster stands close to the vendor-boy, staring deep into his eyes. His voice loses all it's edginess, becoming very smooth, very pleasant, extremely relaxing.

"My friend. Would you be so kind and tell me all that has been going on here recently. And tell me everything you know about that haunted mansion and its former resident"

(Jyri here...)

I believe we get the same out-of-subtier gold, regardless which subtier we play. If we get to choose, I think we ought to play down. Well, because pregens...

Or if John feels the scenario is easy enough, he can persuade us to play up :) But in general, playing up with pregens is pretty bad idea.

"Haunts!?" Meligaster says, flabbergasted. "I have to say I know absolutely nothing about such things! Wasn't this Erasmus fellow joining us? I have understood he is quite an expert on being possessed. I, on the other hand, only claim expertise on being the possessor." An evil gleam at the very thought. So he continues, rubbing his hands together: "Having said that, the other half of the assignment shall be no problem. Give me a week, and all the people in Minkai shall be singing praise to the Society. Yes, yes... gentle suggestion here, some psychic conditioning there.. Excellent! What would you like them to do? Build statues in your honor? Donate their gold to our 'noble cause'?"

Questions... Yes, I do have a question... Who is the fûcker who nicked my fez? I want my fez back! If ever catch the bastard, I'll make him wish he'd never been born!!! This hat must do for now. The owner shan't miss it. We'll be on our way to Minkai before the spell wears out.
