Congrats guys. Feel free to contact me if that second table opens up :)

Hey! Look down here!

You missed Marcus.

Hello, I would like to submit Marcus the halfling paladin of Iomedae.

He is a frontliner that is doing his best to uphold his interpretation of the paladin code (which is a little on the Judge Dredd side) but is hindered by courage issues and being three and a half feet tall.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Haha did I freak out and smite a standard 4 hp skeleton?

I have a couple of questions about the campaign if that is cool.

First, is there a "solution" to the rat room?

Second, would Othelia have attacked us if we kept trying to talk to her?

Last, how did you expect us to deal with the corrupt priest business? (I don't mean this in the this is impossible why would you do this way)

About the difficulty, I agree that it is potentially too rough for level 3. The ghost and shadow fight is basically be prepared for incorporeals or die.

About the game in general:
First, I want to apologize for not posting when I wasn't sure what to do. I am sure it slowed down the game and made it harder to keep up momentum.

I think parts of the game were just unavoidably hindered severely by PbP. Specifically the moral conundrum around the priest and the thug would have taken pausing the game for like a month to have an in-character conversation to play it out adequately. And that is a conversation I definitely would have lost track of anyway. There is no way around this that I can see.

We also got a bit lost in the orphanage, both just physically on the map and with what we thought we were expected to do. The first could be helped by having a list of where we haven't explored and periodically posting it. I think this could be done in a way that wasn't cheating/hints if it was basically just a list of doors we have seen but not opened.

The second is more difficult. It felt like the game almost broke there at the end where we thought there was some mystery to solve and didn't know what the clues were, but really we just had to go back up and crack open the last two chests. I don't blame you for this at all.

Unfortunately a suggestion I have is to avoid hard choices. I don't like this because hard choices are one of the best parts of stories. But they take so long to be done properly with character discussion and agreement. Definitely take this with a giant pile o' salt because it is probably wrong and taking choices out of adventures ruins the point.

Lastly, thank you very much for running this I had quite a lot of fun through most of it.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus shrugs a bit at Mathias' question.
I don't know about properly. Sorry child. IOMEDAE GUIDE MY SWORD!

Marcus calls upon the power of his goddess and takes a mighty swing.

Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
Damage: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Um Mathias, what if it was because she was already undead?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Be careful Mathias. This won't still be her.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Sorry, I am still here.

Marcus has his friends' backs they go back up to the other chests.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Othelia wasn't old enough to just grow up and leave the orphanage right?

I am sorry Mathias. There were more chests upstairs that could hold more clues. Or we just burn it down the rest of the way.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Creature of the night! Come and face your judgement!
Man I wish there was some kind of exorcism mechanic.

Very well let us see what we can learn. Marcus' voice returns to a normal tone and he helps the others carry some of the documents out to better light.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Show yourself spirit!
Marcus shouts and looks around the room trying to determine which direction it came from.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I don't see a reason not to open them.

Marcus will stand ready with his sword in one hand and a bless weapon oil in the other.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I am leaving tomorrow morning to go camping and likely won't be able to post again until Monday. Feel free to bot me if you enter combat.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus looks about the room but doesn't investigate further when he detects no evil.

I am glad we didn't find whatever shade this room would have produced. Hope the little ones made it out ok.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus is poking around the bedrolls and anything else that looks like it belonged to whoever was living here, detecting evil as he goes.

This isn't a place any reasonable person would live. So it either wasn't so haunted a few months ago when they were here or they were here specifically for the haunting. If it is the latter this town might have bigger problems than just the ghosts and monsters here.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I agree, the rats should die in the fire while ghosts might not.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus withdraws out the door as well.

Well those are terrible, burn them? Though that wouldn't be very safe for the house.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Readied Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Marcus raises his sword to meet the charging rats.

Gods that's horrifying.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus takes a stance similar to Mathias.

Here little critter.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Did something happen when Mathias smashed the mirror?

Marcus drinks one of his cure potions.

Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Marcus shivers a bit and puts a hand on his stomach. This must have been a horrible place. He follows Beswaur through the next door.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus nods I expected whatever was in there to attack us.

He uses his detect evil to search along with Mathias before moving on.

Where have we not searched? I guess the room with the harpsichord and maybe some more of the first floor?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Is the stove locked?
Might as well try.

If he doesn't have any Marcus will hand Mathias two flasks of holy water. If the stove seems to be locked he will ask for the keys, otherwise he will just try to unlatch the door by hand.

I am wearing banded mail and I imagine heavy leather gloves that would protect me at least from a normal amount heat, but probably not rated for stove demons :)

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus taps the side of the furnace with the flat of his sword and pushes the door all the way open with it.

A haunted stove?

Detect evil on the furnace.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus drags the dead ooze away from Beswaur.
Mathias what is going on with that stove?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Dang that's a low save DC then.

This squishy thing is also interesting!

Marcus hacks at the ooze again.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus glances quickly at the fireplace but doesn't stop long enough to examine it closely. He turns his attention to the ooze.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

I like this ooze, it has AC appropriate to our luck.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Dunno, but its trying to eat me so I'm going to stab it just after I...
Swinging at centipede
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
...kill this thing.

Haha! Yes! Finally!

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Well at least you roll well for us.

Marcus yanks his sword out of the pile and brings it down towards the centipede again.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Narrowly missing the nimble bugger.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1
John Whyte wrote:
The door at the top of the stairs is stuck, but a swift kick from Mathias makes it burst open.

Praise Iomedae!

The good news is that it's not ghosts!

Marcus drops his torch somewhere on the dirt floor and runs to the centipede on the log pile. He attempts to cut it in two.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Instead he rams his sword gloriously into the moldy log pile.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

At least anything with footsteps is easier to hit.

Torch in hand and sword on his shoulder Marcus advances down the stairs.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

A nod, Sounds good, first floor then?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus is fine and definitely willing to push on.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

When we are done Marcus bows his head over the grave and saysRest in peace. Then he turns back to the orphanage.

There were a couple more rooms upstairs in this cursed place. Let's check those and move on to the main floor.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

In the graveyard I suppose in the hopes that being laid to rest will make her not try to kill us again.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus finds his torch and searches the floor for anything left behind by the dark shadows. If he finds nothing he goes to the bedroom with the others.

Our we still wounded from the thug fight?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

More wild flailing at evil death ghosts!

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Marcus manages to make contact, but just barely.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Can I reach the shadow? If I can:

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1
Beswaur Blue Bottle wrote:
Marcus, if you aren't going to use your bow with the Ghost Salt arrows, can we say I was planning to use it?

No problem, it's a small Longview though so I don't know how that works.

Marcus steps back and takes a swing at the shadow.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus takes a five foot step away, draws an oil of magic weapon and pours it on his sword.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus chuckles nervously I guess she is still mad about last time, but yes we should lay her to rest.

Marcus heads down the west hallway.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus follows behind, sword and torch at the ready. Yep, I think we are just walking through rooms until something attacks us.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus lights his own torch and follows the others into the house. I think we should start upstairs again, find those evil shadows.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

GM:
diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus will buy 10 torches, a flint and steel, and 4 oils of magic weapon.

What is the plan? I say we just go in the front door again and look around. We know there are at least some of those dark spirits. Hopefully the hag-ghost hasn't somehow come back.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus nods I'm sorry Father but I think you need to go to an authority higher than us. What you did was for a good cause, I hope the church will consider that.

+1 to going back to the orphanage.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

No Father, we met his thugs. But he did speak to us and now I suppose looking up at Mathias we have more questions.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus stares defiantly at the wounded thug and his hand drifts towards his sword, but he leaves when Mathias does. Outside in the street he says,

I say we rest up and come back, maybe tonight. See if he is so aloof and dismissive while he's sleeping. How much magic do you have left Beswaur?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus looks from the man on the stairs, to Beswaur, to Mathias.

Time to go?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Marcus brings his sap around again with his hand pressed to his side.

Lay on Hands: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sap: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage(nonlethal): 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I ran to the other side of the table to attack Mathais' thug. They should have 13hp and 30hp, and my guy probably got an attack of opportunity on me.

Marcus lay on hands himself again and takes another swing at the thug menacing Mathias.

Lay on hands: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sap: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Damage(nonlethal): 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Dice are evil, may I smite them?
