As for the brothers al-Jabira....

Mahdi's brows arch above his now-golden eyes at Pent's eloquent farewell. "We won't stay away too long, between visits," he agrees. "After all, our primary work will be watching the Pale Mountain, and that isn't so far... in the grand scheme of things. It is, say, much closer than the Plane of Air, or Kakishon.

"And perhaps, when I am not learning new magics or sailing through the planes-- given my now expanded lifespan-- I shall have time to add to your doggerel, Pent."

The smirk fades off the wizard-jann's face after a few seconds. "And I shall always recall you healing Hazim. And also, the many times on our long, strange journey that Sarah's succor kept me from an untimely death, and, ultimately, made our victory possible. I wish you much joy of your life in Kelmarene, Pent Arotha, and a long life in Sarah's service."

He turns to Otah, eyeing him critically a moment before favoring the dwarf with a smile. "You have been a stalwart companion, Otah... your one mistake aside. This matter of genies and fire was one you came to later than the rest of us, and had you ever said, 'This is not my fight,' and gone to your own pursuits, who of us could have blamed you? But you stayed, well past any debt you might have owed us... I trust it was worth it, in the end," he adds drily, with a wave of one smoldering hand at the king's ransom in ensorcelled items that Otah now bears into battle. "Should I need a warrior again, to aid myself and Hazim, I shall look to you, Otah Cragsmith. Perhaps I'll call on you at your clan-- wouldn't that raise eyebrows!"

And last, the brothers. Mahdi places his hands on his hips as he regards the twins, and their mounts. "The two of you," he remarks after some scrutiny, "shall have to find someone else to conjure armor for your faithful steeds!

"Aldebert-- you have been no less stalwart than Otah. The evenest head in our little group, I suppose. You have put yourself and your blade between my person and danger a score of times, and I shall remember it. May Abadar grant you all the riches and prosperity you could ever desire.

"Ami.... as often as we've butted heads... we have also worked well together. I can say that above all you are true to yourself, and you never waver in your convictions. Or your loyalties. Without you, and Yeen, we never might have seen this day as well. May your goddess guide and guard you both."

And with that, Mahdi bows low to Nefeshti. "I shall return and take up my post in due time, lady. For now-- I have promises to fulfill, to my brother! Hazim, let me show you the worlds beyond!"

A flash of fire, heat lightning across the desert.... and the brothers are gone.

Mahdi admires his new form with, for once, a near minute of speechlessness, giving the others time to remark. He flexes his fingers, he laughs, he grins at Hazim, white and dazzling against newly-bronzed skin.

"Ah! Hazim, how handsome we are! Let the ladies of Katapesh-- and more exotic climes-- be warned, the brothers al-Jabira are arrived!"

Mahdi takes to the air and spins slowly in place, reveling in his newfound sense of the air around him, the hot desert wind. Again he laughs, bright and triumphant... until he gets a small set of arms round his leg.

"I don't think I'll be terribly far, Ami," he snorts. "We are going to continue guarding this area, after all. It isn't goodbye."

Mahdi rolls his head to side to side, blasts a few bolts of flame into the air for the sheer joy of it, and grins broadly up at the hot sky overhead.

"Let us go and retrieve your lady, Pent. I'll teleport us there if you wish it!"

Mahdi clasps his hands behind his back and offers a shadow of his old cocky smile to Nefeshti. "Honored lady, all my sympathies lie with fire, not air. And likely none of us should wish me to be an efreet.

"Still..." he looks back, in the direction where the Pale Mountain waits, and burns down at its heart with Xotani's throbbing heat. "I also would not wish fire to consume this world. In my lifetime, or any other. There is much here that is worth preserving.

"I have sworn certain oaths to my brother. To show him things. To travel with him. If I may discharge these oaths before I take up this responsbility, it would be well with me. Or..." he clears his throat, and looks to Hazim, "...or, perhaps, there is room for one who also sacrificed and endured much in fighting Jhavhul, to join me in this responsbility? We are all the family each of us has left in the world, great Nefeshti. I would not wish my brother to grow old and die on his own while I remained one of your eternal templars."

Mahdi nods. "It was a hard-fought battle, but Otah struck the killing blow. Jhavhul is no more-- his plans put to an end before the final wishes that would have spelled doom for this world. And what will you do now, Nefeshti?"

CN Human Wizard 14 | Fort +8, Ref +7, Will +11; (+1 vs. fire) | AC 15 - CMD 17 | P +18, Init +10 | HP 87/94 | 12/12 jets remaining | Current buffs: Mage Armor, Overland Flight, Life Bubble, See Invisibility, Locate Creature (Hazim), Prot from fire 120 pts

Mahdi spends some spells on creating a life bubble on everyone, to ensure that the blistering heat of the desert does not provide even a moment's discomfort.

When his brother is healed, Mahdi takes in a sharp breath, and grips at Hazim's hand. "You see, Hazim?"

With a throat clearing, he looks down at Pent. "For this... I owe you a debt, Pent, servant of Sarenrae. Claim it when you will. And you have my great thanks."

Mahdi then proceeds to chatter at his brother, nearly non-stop, launching into a tale of all that has happened in the time they have been parted, walking the battlements of Kelmarene with him to feel the warm desert wind on their faces, to see the world as it is-- a blue sky above, occasional dots of greenery in the sands-- not wrecked and ruined by fire grown out of all control, as surely would have been the case had Xotani reformed.

By the time they reach the others, Mahdi's spell of elemental form has dissolved. He would undo it anyway if it hadn't. He goes to his brother first, pulls him into another embrace, this one wordless for long moments. Perhaps in his heart of hearts, beneath his confident exterior, Mahdi had considered that he might not return, that they might fail. But if so, this worry is laid to rest now.

"Well. It is done," he says at length, pulling back and speaking in cavalier tones. "Not really a contest, in the end. Follow me, brother. We'll see about your eyes. About the second restoration of Kelmarene. About all of it."

Mahdi is pleased to see some alive. "Fortunately, yes, I can see you all out.... thanks to this new bauble," he says with a light gesture at his new necklace. A pause. "--ah... this is Mahdi al-Jabira. If you do not recognize me."

He turns to the others. "I can cast the same protection of life bubble on our Kelmarenites as we ourselves currently enjoy. The spell would last a little over two hours for Mr. Cooperworth and all the others-- that should be plenty of time for us to traverse back to the upper stretches. But we want to be assured we have no more lurking enemies-- my spell will protect them from heat, not from the arrows of an efreet."

Even after all the wealth they've seen, even after the fact he's wearing a king's ransom in magic items alone, Mahdi is brought up a little at the sight of the sheer exorbitant treasure on display. He laughs despite himself, booming sparks emitting from his mouth, and flies forward into the piles of gold and gems, plucking up a handful of rubies as if they were simply sand on a seashore, watching them drip through his fingers looking like living flame as the fire of his own transformed body reflects in them.

"By all gods-- ah, Hazim, you WILL see this, I swear it. Well, my friends-- here is enough for a temple of Saranrae, if you wish it, and one to Abadar to go next to it, or a bequest for your clan that will leave your name spoken of for generations, Otah. Indeed, it would also buy many, many delectable goats, I imagine."

Shaking his head, Mahdi plays with a fortune in gemstones another dozen seconds before he sets to identifying all the items. "We have a second flying carpet, now. An embarrassment of riches indeed."

His eyes burn like coals as he names item after item, but flare into open fire at a finely wrought necklace of diamonds and mithril. "Ahem. I'll be claiming this if there are no objections-- a necklace of netted stars, I hadn't thought there to be more than two or three in all the world...."

The fire mage locks eyes with the paralyzed and hateful gaze of the glabrezu, and as the others tear into the paralyzed form he deliberately lifts one hand and executes a somatic component that is also a gesture universal across many languages, showing just what he thinks of the ominous revenge promised by the demon's stare.

"Yes, well. If we were going to fight, it might as well be a fight over quickly," Mahdi says in answer to Pent, shaking out a little more magma from his hands. "Let's see if there's anything better off in our hands than in that demon's. Aldebert, you should be free to move in a moment or two.... but I hope that we will soon be clear. I haven't that many more spells to spend on clean-up. And I wish to rejoin my brother. Perhaps Nefeshti can heal his eyes..."

Somewhat pensively, the fire elemental/mage/bit of both helps to search the chamber, scanning for magic amid the myriad illusions.

Mahdi looks less than enthused to see the entity, lips thinned.

"Don't anybody tell this entity your name," he says shortly to his companions, before addressing the glabrezu.

"We aren't bored, as it happens. We are tired and more than ready to go home, but we keep finding outsiders here. If you are bored, then you might return to your own plane. Either way, you will free those poor wretches you've imprisoned hanging there. I dislike torture. And I dislike any who allied with Jhavhul, so decide quickly if you wish to join his fate in battle or surrender before our respective Sarenites make the choice a moot one; either way we will not be sitting here at a tea-party with you."

Mahdi flies to rejoin the others, finally shedding the last of his nausea. While expressions are difficult to parse on the roiling fire that is his face, his shoulders slump with some relief.

He gives an understanding nod when Otah stabs the already downed body. "What an absolute... ass," he says with some heat. "Trying to taunt me about Hazim being dead-- when he wasn't!!"

He spits on the body for good measure, even if it's a glob of light magma that emerges from his elemental mouth.

"Yes, we should heal. We'll need to go through and be sure all his wretched minions like those erinyes are no further threat to our plane. Clean-up, essentially-- tedious, but necessary, and we shouldn't be overly cocky as we do so."

At Pent's question, the large elemental looks briefly down to the ground, then shrugs. "Evil creatures have many tricks, Pent. I don't think we can speak decisively as to Almah's fate until we've been through the entire complex. But it could have simply been a mind game, such as his attempts to claim he'd killed my brother."

A sidelong glance at the two halflings. "....I am.... glad... that neither of you perished.

"For that matter, I am glad that none of us perished. Not even you, Otah." The fire elemental smiles, then laughs, a great booming sound. "I am especially glad you did not perish, for your blow likely saved us all! I suppose I can forgive you for the error of earlier."

"I don't know why you're so opposed to striking down those salamanders, Aldebert. I say we do pursue them, remove them as a threat. They may not be a large one in their own right but enough of them can still be dangerous, especially if we're focused on something else."

Mahdi sighs slightly at watching the sword be cast into the lava. I sincerely doubt they were 'sheathed' as the fire giants were using them to attack us. But we can probably use our own weapons to nudge them to the lava flow without directly handling them, I bet

Shaking his head, Mahdi cracks his fingers. "Fine. And no, Pent, I don't want that damned chaos-stick, it's as likely to erupt in flowers as it is to turn me invisible. Are we ready? Is everyone healed?"

I think I'm down 7, IDK if anyone else still needs a top-up.

Mahdi does reach out to Otah and tap his palm impatiently. "I'll take that ioun stone I gave you back. First of all you haven't used it. And secondly, WASTING MY MAGIC."

Mahdi decrees that Otah is no longer worth of his shield spell. Aldebert, would you like to use it? It will activate a +4 shield bonus on you for 42 minutes. 'Now' seems a good time to use the standard action to activate it.

When all preparations are made, Mahdi will snap his fingers and transform into a towering fire elemental, and move for the door...

"Just turn invisible, Mahdi, and jump on Otah's back."

"In the first place, Pent, I don't have invisibility further to spare, I've already used all such spells of that nature to avoid getting killed already. Secondly, if I jump on Otah's back, it's going to be to put a dagger in his spine."

The words are delivered as Mahdi inspects the swords with furrowed brow. "....fascinating. These swords are... intelligent. I wouldn't suggest trying to handle them-- their will is strong, and their intent, malicious. "

The mage pauses, torn between venality and prudence, casting a glance over his shoulder back at the nearest lava flow. "....we might as well leave them here for now since you are all in such a rush to keep going that we can't hunt down our existing foes. For the record, I am completely out of any further abilities to make the unseen, visible. I can tell you they're here; I can't stop you being shanked by them."

"I'm sorry, Otah, did you have an opinion? I couldn't hear it over the sound of you WASTING MY MAGIC," Mahdi says with a toss of his head. He scowls at the consensus from the others. "Right, so, you all think it is fine to leave a number of enemies behind us-- who can turn invisible, at least some of them-- and give them leave to just pursue us at their leisure through this portal that they can operate and we cannot short of extraordinary means, is that the sum of it? And, pray tell, when the archers who are prone to unleashing multiple shots from invisibility come upon us from behind, who is it who shall be closest to them, I wonder-- oh, yes, myself and Pent, most likely."

The mage pinches at the bridge of his nose, then waves his hand. "Very well. Majority rules, I suppose. Do we not at least wish to take the time to check and see if our downed foes have anything of interest before we charge into further near-death?"

Mahdi will scan the room and the downed giants with some detect magic, etc. He doesn't care so much about their axes and armor, even if those items probably are magical, so much as consumables like potions, or potentially jewelry, etc. Take 10 to ID anything he notes. I'm going to assume that my haste casting is probably dead by the time we're done talking, anyway.

Mahdi pauses before the doors, eyes raking up and down them briefly. "Yes. But we'll probably need a captive to do it," he says with his usual bluntness. "It's keyed to creatures with inherent ties to fire itself... Let me think a moment."

(Illustrious GM: Does Mahdi think he could use his Elemental Body III spell to turn into a fire elemental and be able to open the door?)

"I dislike leaving enemies at our back, however. Especially ones who can turn invisible. I've tasted enough of their arrows. Even just leaving rooms at our back, unexplored, leaves a poor taste in my mouth."

"Kindly don't hit me, Otah, I am an Ally of yours, helping you," Mahdi says with a verified abuse of sarcasm as he hovers near the ceiling and above Otah.

Lightning crackles along the armor of the fire giants once more, as Mahdi sweeps his gaze at the fleeing salamanders.

"I forced those janni archers visible but I am now out of spells to do such things," he remarks tersely. "We'll need to hunt them down before it wears off unless we want them to dog us perpetually. As for these brave souls who've decided the battle is a little too stiff for them--"

A burst of blindingly white light erupts around the salamanders, catching most of them, brought into being by a gesture from Mahdi.

Mahdi realizes too late that the blow is actually DISMISSING his summons entirely. "OTAH," he says in a fury so dark that he doesn't even add anything else.

Snarling under his breath, the mage wheels on the new arrivals, and gestures shortly.

The bone devil howls, and looks at its master with eyes that burn like chunks of blistering ice. It turns on Otah, claws upraised, only for Mahdi's sharp, ringing "NO!" to halt it. The devil seethes with the enforced command, visibly twitching in place, a stream of Infernal curses ripping from its ossified jaw, before it turns back, shuddering, to the giants.

"THE NEXT TIME YOU ATTACK ONE OF MY SERVITORS I WON'T STOP IT FROM GUTTING YOU," Mahdi snaps at Otah. "ARE YOU BLIND? A BEAUTIFUL BLOW INDEED, ON SOMETHING THAT IS AIDING US AND WASN'T EXPECTING YOUR ATTACK! FINE DWARVEN STRATEGY AT WORK, I SEE!"

Also, I think I started a turn and then forgot about posting it at some point, thus my lightning symbol on the blue giant, which was going to be my symbol for a ball lightning. We'll do that now, I suppose.)

Scowling, Mahdi considers the battlefield. "I wasted powerful magic summoning that devil, Otah. No, I'm sorry, I misspoke. I correctly used powerful magic. You wasted it. I'm never casting beneficial spells on you again."

Instead Mahdi sketches a few more quick zigs and zags with his fingers, figuring that lightning worked well enough last time.

"Kill the giants," Mahdi tersely instructs the bone devil, who cracks its tail once in mocking acknowledgment of the order, before disappearing from sight... and then, invisibly, tearing off at heightened speed around the corner to engage the fiery warriors.

Bookkeeping:

I got healed for 19 here by Pent which doesn't look like it got taken into account on the recaps (the GM recap before that post says I have 26 damage, and the one after it still says I have 26 damage). After that healing, my statline of 87/94 should have been accurate. Then I took the additional 25 from a ranseur, and then Pent channeled for 17, so by my count I think I am at 79/94 (down 15 hp, not 51).

(But those recaps are still incredibly handy, so thank you for those!)

Mahdi nods a short thanks at Pent, and clicks his fingers to order his devil to his side. With a yawn showing those immense incisors, the devil flies around the corner, scraping bone shards against the walls. Mahdi looks annoyed.

"If you're quite done showing off...."

The devil simply leers at Mahdi in a smugly knowing way.

"Right. Before we charge immediately into more danger, let's coordinate at least three seconds worth, shall we? The speed I gave us all is about to expire, shortly. I'll refresh it on all of us likely to fight, if you'll all stay put long enough in one place. CLOSE to each other, we must pretend we all like each other~~~"

Mahdi grits his teeth through the wound but his allies destroy the efreet before he is forced to attempt defensive measures. "Thank you," the mage says tersely as the efreet's body drops. He holds his side where the fresh puncture of a ranseur wound is soaking his under-tunic.

"You seem to have this side in hand. Pent, you are watching for more of the unseen bastards, yes? Good. I'll check our rear."

Dripping some blood in his wake, Mahdi flies back the other way.

Hasted overland flight means I can get back to the juncture with a single move, which I am doing.

The bone devil has waited for Mahdi's orders, knowing it has an unseen foe ahead. Mahdi gestures impatiently. "It's right THERE. Go kill it."

The devil's skeletal face never loses its leering ossified grin, but a low snarl ricochets from his throat. "Someday, mortal.... you shall not give the orders...."

The bone devil burns not in the slightest, thanks to its infernal immunity to fire. It chuckles and sidesteps back through the flames, half in and half out of them, ignoring the fire just as it ignores gravity, and then lashing out at the janni it can see.

Mahdi snorts darkly when his babau falls, intending to bring worse to bear. Seconds later, something that looks like a clattering nightmare of bones and metal materializes. Summoning an osyluth devil with summon monster vii, shown by the red square on the map. It's flying. Of note, the bone devil does not have constant see invisibility.

"Ahhhhh.... earth..... full of so many things... with... flesh," the skeletal nightmare says in a dry, dry voice.

"Yes, well, focus on the ones that have genie flesh," Mahdi snaps out, unseen. The bone devil chuckles with a sound like breaking glass.

Are the newcomers beelining in for melee with scimitars drawn, or do they have bows out and look like they are going to invisibly snipe on Otah and Aldebert?
