Lyraath clutched the wound to slow the bleeding. He considered pulling off another patch for a healing potion, but it didn't look that bad. The creatures scratched at the other side of the door, with just a couple inches of wood separating his back from their foul claws. The archway across the room led to nothing but collapsed stone, far too much to dig through.
On second thought, he considered pulling all of the patches off out of spite, just so that no one else could make use of them, but then reconsidered. "If some roaming band of explorers comes across my corpse, it might be a fun treat for them to find," he thought to himself. The notion of contributing to someone else's loot was kinda nice.
All Lyraath ever loved doing was crawling through dungeons and spending the money he found partying in the slums of the nearest city. Unfortunately, he had been finding actually too much loot, and in the cities, the poor just tried to steal from him and the more well off shunned him as some frightening creature.
So he had settled into his love of strange, deadly, inexplicable dungeons. The stranger and more nonsensical, the better.
He had even heard of a grand one below Waterdeep and hoped to someday make his way there.
But no, his latest band of companions wanted to "look at these dwarven ruins real quick." Well, their bodies will surely be here for quite a while. Lyraath wondered how long it would be until someone found his corpse - or at least whatever those demonic creatures left of it.
With a sigh, he finally decided out loud to no one in particular, "Maybe I should at least pull out the boat patch. Yeah, that should thoroughly confuse anyone who finds me years from now. Bet they'll spend a good long while wondering why there's a boat in the middle-" He was cut off by a sudden flash of light in the archway across from him!
The collapsed tunnel was replaced with some unrecognizable alley, and a strange man - all blue in color with wildly curved horns stepped through. "Whoops! Sorry, berk! Wrong door. Ta!" As the tiefling turned back, Lyraath smiled with glee and jumped after him.
The door ripped open behind him, and fiery claws raked at his heels, but Lyraath leaped through the portal just as it snapped shut.
He was surrounded by the most bizarre collection of creatures he had ever seen. Most humanoid, some not. Even a couple very similar to the other githyanki he only barely remembered from his early childhood.
As he looked up and saw a grand city curve up into the sky before him, he couldn't restrain himself from clapping and proclaiming, "I love it!! This! This is where I belong!" before hurrying off to see just what mischief he could find in his new home.
Lyraath laughed with pure glee as Molok and him were blasted out the mountain. As they landed, he just sighed with content. Treasure chests were always good to open.
"Hey, Urth, enjoy the trident. It wants you to worship water people or something. I promised I'd pledge myself to some Deep Shashabasha but I can't even remember their name, so I don't think that's gonna work for me. And that was quite a lot of fun with water for a while!"
He waved off the healing, since with the force cube protecting him, he actually managed to survive that last insane ride unscathed.
"Narnel and Nine? I don't know. I grabbed Molok and that spear thing. I thought one of you had Narnel. Huh. Think he'll pop out soon?" Lyraath shields his eyes and looks to the sky watching for Narnel to be blasted out as well. "Huh. Guess he didn't want to leave yet."
Sadly, I don't see a way for Narnel to survive...the 8d10 continues each round and the entire dungeon floods.
Ruby doesn't have another cone of cold? ;)
Ug, sorry, man. Any chance with the entire dungeon flooding, that the body would eventually float out within the next 10 days? Lyraath would be willing to pay for a Raise Dead.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Even with the campaign over, it'd be nice to bring him back. But I'm also someone who apologizes to inanimate objects when I bump into them, so that's just me.
Lyraath's eye go wide, his mouth hangs open, and a little bit of drool forms as his intent to run fades. "Oh yeah! Uh, if it will save me from being boiled, then sure I'll pledge to whoever! I don't worship anyone anyways. So the... uh..." Lyraath shrugs trying to remember the names, "...uh, 3rd one sounds good. Deep Sashalasha. I'll worship him! Or her. Or them. Not boiling is nice." Then his eyes gleam and he grabs the trident and then awkwardly tries to grab the spectacles and one or more sacks if he can, filling up his arms with as much treasure as he can manage, "And being able to carry all this out is even nicer."
Or whatever talking and grabbing of things he can do this round, or else he'll do that next round just blindly trusting the beautiful trident to save him somehow.
Lyraath starts cackling with glee, ”Now this is fun! So much for caution!” and tries to open the chest.
If it’s unlocked, he grabs as much as he can of whatever is in there (unless it looks like a mean monster) using his robe as a makeshift basket if possible, and moves towards the doors. If it’s locked, he tries picking the lock. If it’s trapped, he just hopes for the best.
Glad that the threat of being locked in by the halfling has seemingly passed, Lyraath pauses for a moment - then his eyes go wide, ”The chest!”
He hurries back around the crab - trying to keep his distance - and makes sure one of his potions is readily accessible in case this goes very bad. He then grabs the chest and sees if he can lift or drag it.
Have to dash to get there, so probably can’t really lift or drag the chest yet, but that’s his intention.
"No worries, Godric, this will be just fine. The sailor is dealing with the water now, which is good because he knows all about water! But, yes, let's all step out for a mo-NOOO!!" As Lyraath is moving towards the exit he presumably sees the halfling.
If he can't see the halfling in time to react, that's fine, he'd just double move then.
"You worthless piece of... uh... crab droppings!" Lyraath's anger drops for a moment as he wonders if he should try again with a better taunt, but then shrugs and flips back into a raging hatred! He prepares to unleash a mental assault that will shame the halfling into cowering rather than closing the door... but then realizes he's too far away, so he curses and with another shrug just mentally punches her in the back of the head.
Argh! Everything that could help has a 60ft limit! :) So I guess Psychic Hammer it is then! If the halfling fails DC 15 Strength save, then takes damage and is moved 10 feet towards us.
Lyraath moves up and towards the side, hoping to stay clear of the water spray, then calls upon his heritage to manifest a mage hand and attempt to put it against one of the holes or even plug it with a mage finger to block or at least slow it.
Then he eyes the creature carefully and studies its aura closely.
Manifest Aura Sight (Assess Foe) as a bonus action, and then repeats to the rest of the group what he finds out. (Psi Points left: 13)
Aura Sight (Assess Foe):
Assess Foe (2 psi). As a bonus action, you analyze the aura of one creature you see. You learn its current hit point total and all its immunities, resistances, and vulnerabilities.
"Anyone have anything to keep these doors from slamming shut behind us? Hopefully they won't, but this place has had just a couple traps built into it. Hmm..." Lyraath feels around in his pockets, "I have... uh... a ladder, I guess. Not sure if that would be strong enough. Ah well, all else fails, we have enough windows for two of the doors." he says with a shrug and then turns his attention back to the impressions in the ground.
"So... uh... should we throw something in there and see what happens, or what?"
"I think there's some burrowing creatures - possibly crustaceans - around that chest. What do you think the odds are that they are friendly and willing to just let us carry that chest away?" Lyraath says with a wink. Then he helps the others push this last door open. Unless anyone vetoes that decision. Lyraath is just going with the apparent consensus.
”Godric, thanks for waiting. At least we know what to expect now. Anyone see anything moving? Do we want to face this big open space or the spinning tunnel? I’m sure both will be fun!”
Lyraath looks through the window for any movement.
I was excited to see that I rolled those, they are awesome! I’m just glad there wasn’t a 4th door, but thank Planescape’s Rule of 3s holding true, I guess. :)
I haven’t used really any of the patches, I think, and still have another window. I’ll hold onto that one for something desperate.
I’ve come close to using the 24ft long ladder but haven’t had th right use yet.
So on my Robe of Useful Items, I have a couple Window patches. "Window (2 feet by 4 feet, up to 2 feet deep), which you can place on a vertical surface you can reach." I know the Pit patch opens a pit in the ground, so would a window create an opening to view through the door? :)
Lyraath waves at the departing creature, "Bye! Sorry for killing your friends, but please leave us alone now. Thank you."
Then, wary of another attack, he steps just inside the room and looks around to see if there are other ways out that aren't as obvious or anything else of interest.
If there isn't, he will go ahead and start walking along the wall to the other side.
Lyraath steps up in front of his companions and a wave of psionic energy ripples through the air. Then he quickly steps back behind them again, preferring to not be in front any longer than necessary.
Psychic Blast - 60 foot cone going for green and yellow. DC 15 Intelligence save, half damage on success.
Bonus Action to shift Psychic Focus to Psychic Assault. Then action to manifest Mind Thrust talent/cantrip at it.
Mind Thrust psychic damage:2d10 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1) + 2 = 4 Wow, that is less than impressive. :)
Int save DC 15, no damage on success
Psychic Assault (Psychic Focus):
While focused on this discipline, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with psionic talents that deal psychic damage.
Mind Thrust:
Psionic Talent
As an action, you target one creature you can see within 120 feet of you. The target must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw or take 1d10 psychic damage.
The talent's damage increases by 1d10 when you reach 5th level (2d10), 11th level (3d10), and 17th level (4d10).
Lyraath curses himself for his unthought out reaction. Focusing for a moment, he manifests a glowing third on his forehead. Then looking to see that the creature is not immediately next to him, he pulls out a potion from a dirty pocket and gets ready to use it on Narnel.
He pauses for just a moment to make sure Narnel is still breathing and not already dead - wouldn't want to waste it after all, then pours the potion down his throat.
"Get up and kill that thing! It's over there!"
Bonus Action for Third Eye: Truesight. Then action to use an item to give Narnel a Greater Healing potion.
Lyraath's eyes drooped heavily and he kept catching his head from nodding. The whooshing sound and attacks on Narnel startled Lyraath awake.
Seeing nothing, he stammered and then stepped forward and unleashed a psychic blast down the hallway.
What is the token just below me on the map? Is that our golem? If possible in the hallway, Lyraath will try to step past it and fill as much of the hallway from Narnel down with the 60 ft cone. And then step back to where he was.
Int Save DC 17 or 8d8 psychic damage in 60 ft cone. Half damage on save.
Lyraath conveys all of that information except says that Whelm longs to be outside basking in noonday sunshine after being trapped in this darkness for so long (and psychic focusing on Nomadic Mind to give himself proficiency in Deception). Just to amuse himself. :)
He will identify anything anyone asks him to. He can do up to 4, but each one will take an hour, I believe, and he'd still need to rest to regain his points for the next day.
Perception in the dark room before Truesight ends if it matters:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
"No I didn't hear anything, but that sounds fun! What did it say? If you or any of the rest you want, since we are going to rest a while, I can study any of these new objects and see if I can detect any psychic impressions left on them or read their auras."
Are we taking a short or long rest? Especially if we are taking a long rest, Lyraath can burn up the rest of his points on identifying one object if short rest or up to a few if long rest. Although they sound odd enough that it might be get weird if he mentally reads them. Mechanically, it's just an identify spell, but in-character he would be psionically scanning and reading auras and that sort of New Age-y stuff. :)
Lyraath suggests one, or more, of them should watch near the boiling mud room at least, since hopefully we'd be able to see anyone approaching from that direction with some time to react.
Lyraath stares intently at the vampire, his vision shifting to see the auras surrounding her. Then he gathers up another bundle of thought and rage and blasts it at the creature.
Bonus Action to use Aura Sight (Assess Foe) to find out current hp, immunities, resistances, and vulnerabilities. Might have been handy earlier, but I hadn't used it yet and forgot I had it. Oops! But handy now to see how close we are. Then hit her with a maxed out Psionic Blast.
Psionic Blast:6d8 ⇒ (1, 7, 8, 7, 3, 7) = 33
Aura Sight: Assess Foe:
(2 psi). As a bonus action, you analyze the aura of one creature you see. You learn its current hit point total and all its immunities, resistances, and vulnerabilities.
Psychic Assault: Psionic Blast:
(1–7 psi). As an action, choose one creature you can see within 60 feet of you. The target takes 1d8 psychic damage per psi point spent on this ability.
As she grasps onto Lyraath and goes to bite his artery, he suddenly shrinks down to miniature size Ant Man style! runs several feet away and suddenly burst back to his original size.
With a smile, he says, "You really should learn anatomy because my eyes are up here!" As he points to his eyes, he unleashes his pent up psionic energy into a massive push trying to knock her into the hallway.
Diminution: Sudden Shift as a reaction to avoid the attack. Then one more attempt at Psychic Hammer but this time using Psionic Surge to release his psychic focus and grant disadvantage on the save.
Psychic Hammer force damage:2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
Strength Save DC 15 at disadvantage or take that damage and moved 10 feet out of the room.
Diminution: Sudden Shift:
As a reaction when you are hit by an attack, you shift down to minute size to avoid the attack. The attack misses, and you move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks before returning to normal size.
Psionic Surge:
Starting at 6th level, you can overload your psychic focus to batter down an opponent’s defenses. You can impose disadvantage on a target’s saving throw against a discipline or talent you use, but at the cost of using your psychic focus. Your psychic focus immediately ends if it’s active, and you can’t use it until you finish a short or long rest.
You can’t use this feature if you can’t use your psychic focus.
Lyraath looks at her quizzically. ”What are you trying to do? That’s not going to work. Hmm, also I think it’s time to deal with this more directly.” He draws a short sword, charges up, and starts lunging at her and trying to grab and pull her off of Molok.
Help action to assist Molok and grant advantage on his next roll if that’s alright.
Lyraath moves into the corner of the room and continues to try to tell the others - especially Godric and Molok - where the creature is.
Then, clenching his teeth, he builds up his thoughts into a tightly woven bundle of anger and fear. He compacts it down into a small mote and then adds more to it, growing it before compacting it down tighter. Again and again until the thoughts are ready to explode out, he finally wraps it up in the fresh memory of falling towards the boiling mud and launches it into the mind of the creature.
Lyraath reactivates truesight as a bonus action, and then manifests Psychic Hammer at it to try and pull whatever creature it is away from Molok towards us - even out of the darkness if possible, but probably not since can only pull 10 feet if successful.
Only after that, he will yell out what creature he sees and where it roughly is in the room.
Psychic Hammer: Strength Save DC 15 or take 2d6 force damage and pulled 10 feet.
"Oh, wow... uh... thanks! I didn't think you would do that. Thank you!"
He then looks at the dark area ahead curiously. He closes his eyes, and a third eye appears in his forehead - this one glows slightly with a scintillating rainbow of colors. If others will let him pass, he will approach - but not enter - the darkness.
Activate Third Eye: Truesight. Concentration for up to 1 minute.
Third Eye: Truesight:
(5psi; conc., 1 min.).As a bonus action, you gain truesight with a radius of 30 feet, which lasts until your concentration ends.
Lyraath is willing to jump it figuring no one would bother going through the effort for him (that's just who he is) :), but will wait a moment in case he's wrong and Urth would help him.
Lyraath tries to angle a mental attack at the bugbear, but is too distracted by trying not to fall. However, he is relieved when it runs off. That relief is short lived, unfortunately, as he and Urth are blasted with boiling, burning mud.
He manages to dodge the worst of it, but with a series of cursing in a variety of languages, he pulls out a potion to drink.
Greater Healing:4d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 2) + 4 = 13
Then looking at Urth screaming in agony, Lyraath says, ”Hey, Urth... uh... you ok? Want a potion, maybe? I got a few. Or... (gulp) need someone to put you out of your misery or something? I can help with either. I’m here for you.”
I had to re-enable content sharing. It apparently turned off when my subscription ended. Hopefully it’s good now (or soon). Sorry about that! Have to check on why I was never notified (because I still had access to my content, so I never noticed anything different).
I’m still around but both the site seems to be down whenever I check and I’m a bit swamped at the moment. Go ahead and bot me if need be, and I’ll try to get back in the next day or two. As for DDB access, there seems to be something messed up with sharing. My wife and in person players got cut off too. I’m looking into it.
EDIT: Check your access again, GM. Ends up it came up for annual renewal and either didn’t auto renew (and needed me to actively do it) or it had a old card and didn’t prompt me that it failed. But it should be good now.
Yep, still here. But oldest kid is moving to Chicago for college tomorrow morning, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to devote much cognitive cycles to this over the weekend. Bot if necessary.
And the site has been an odd sort of buggy. Seems to be very reliable and stable the majority of the time, but when there is a problem, it’s completely, utterly out for a week. Site problems are kinda rare, but always catastrophic.
Lyraath will step onto whatever platform he's confident he can reach, preferring as far along towards Urth as possible.
Holding onto the platform and chain, Lyraath catches his breath. Then still only able to see the one bugbear dangling at Urth's feet, Lyraath attempts to mentally grab the creature and shove it off the platform.
Psychic Hammer damage:2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5 Psychic Hammer - Strength Save DC 15. If fail, then force damage and move 10 ft off the platform.
Psychic Hammer:
(Psionic Talent)
As an action, you try to grasp one creature you can see within 120 feet of you, with a hand crafted from telekinetic energy. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or take 1d6 force damage. If it takes any of this damage and is Large or smaller, you can move it up to 10 feet in a straight line in a direction of your choice. You can’t lift the target off the ground unless it is already airborne or underwater.
The talent’s damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
Lyraath tries to jump part way across the disks, and then mentally teleport as close as he can get to Urth.
Move as far as he can, then bonus action Misty Step further. Decide on action once we see where he is...
Acrobatics DC 10:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6Proficient from Nomadic Mind Acrobatics DC 10 adv:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Dex save DC 10:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Oh, that's lovely. Does he hit the boiling mud before he misty steps? How bad is that? Can he reach any of the platforms with a 30 ft misty step? Depending on where he ends up, I'll figure out his action.
”Nice... uh... rukkin’ memory!” Lyraath starts digging around in his nearly ruined backpack full of small burn holes, and then twists around trying to examine the patches on his odd looking robe. ”Well, I have about 150 ft of rope, a 24 ft ladder, um... a couple windows? No, those won’t help. Oh, and I can turn into smoke! So... uh... hmm, maybe Urth fly along and run the rope between each so we can climb across? Not sure on the elevation...” Lyraath does some math in his head but then gives up. ”Might be close but a bit short to have the rope go there and back so we have two to use for climbing for extra stability.”
If we do something like that, we could run the rope through the chain links rather than worrying about knots until the end. Was wondering if could do two at slightly different heights so we could tightrope walk one while holding onto the other, but would likely need more rope for that.
Also, shift Psychic focus to Nomadic Mind and take proficiency in Acrobatics in case that helps.
Lyraath gently nudges the strange door, examining how it works. "Well, that's an odd door. Hopefully something equally odd on the other side!" With a smile, he pushes his way through into the next area (while putting a hand on his potion of gaseous form, just in case).
Sorry for silence, I was pretty wiped out sick. Glad that creepy giggling girl didn't kill us in our sleep while Lyraath was dozing off on watch! Sorry again!
So how far is it across them? 15 feet? If Godric doesn't want to use smites up, we could either jumping across (I can triple one person's jump distance and boost my own a bit), or I have a 12 foot long rowboat we could try running across quick (maybe put upside down?) Or get really creative with cutting apart my 24 foot long ladder and stringing a tightrope across it? :)
"Sir Bluto, yes, surrender and we will spare your lives! We are just passing through and have no quarrel with you. Continue your attack and we will swat you like flies!"
For emphasis, Lyraath flicks his hand in the air and strikes at purple with a Psychic Hammer, trying to push him back away from Godric.
Psychic Hammer:2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6 Str Save DC 15 or 6 Force damage and moved 10 feet away from Godric towards the wall
