Congratulations folks have a good game! Again AoW_GM, thanks for running the game.

And your doing a fine job :)

Thanks, I will look into Google slides. I hope it's as easy as you make it sound. :) Those things are never easy for me. Hopefully, there are some helpful Youtube videos around. LOL...
It really is fairly simple if your familiar with google docs. I'm running my first game on the boards and with a little help from one of the players I was able to feel pretty comfortable pretty quickly.

I think the interest has died down a bit and I have a qualified pool of 10 applicants to date, so I am moving the closing date of the Recruitment to Friday, October 20, 2023 @ 10:00 PM EST.

Ok, the date has been moved up a little so I should get posting.

This is Robert Henry's cavalier (archetype: Daring Champion). Violant if you could add him to that fine list your doing I would appreciate it :)

Also, AoW_GM if I don't get the opportunity to say it later, thanks for running the game, we players appreciate it. Since we are down to the wire, good luck everyone and good gaming.

Reasons not excuses.:
I'm only putting this in a spoiler so not to leave a wall of text everyone has to pass through

Please note that I will choose the applicants by the rp story, background, personality/visual depiction/coolness of the character concept rather than choosing one character for each of the tropes (healer/arcane/frontline/skill monkey). For example, if I like 4 rogues, that is what I will pick.

I got nervous when you listed visual depiction as a point of reference, because I don't do very good with providing images. I tend to build an image in my brain and try to stick with it. Back in college I'd just draw the character out, but I don't have the computer skill to do that on a graphic design program. But if I had to produce an 'inspiring image' it probably would be of 'Ardeth Bay' from the 'Mummy' or maybe one of his Medjai ancestors. But that would be more about motive than appearance.

When I think of the Mummy's Mask AP my brain is automatically drawn to the movie 'The Mummy.' My two favorite characters being Rick and Ardeth. They both fit in this ying and yang version of hero's I like. Either the lovable rogue or the knight in shining armor. Robin Hood/Ivanhoe, Conan/John Carter, Mat Caulton/Lan Mandragoran even Doc Holiday/Wyatt Earp. You get the idea.

Because it felt like you wanted a developed character, I decided to try and revamp one of the characters I'd played before. It would be easy to take a lovable rogue from a previous failed game, and add the Foreign Opportunist trait from the AP. Basically a pre-built O'Connell-like character. Sadly, none of them felt right. So, I started from the ground up.

I'd been wanting to play a Swashbuckler, but the class didn't feel right. So, I went with the 'Cavalier' class with the archetype Daring Champion. It has a similar feel, but with the 'Order of the Lion' it really tied him to King and Country, so to speak. He's lawful good, with a penchant to play the lute, which is the instrument his mother plays.

He wants to learn if the stories he heard growing up, about his ancestors Padmavati (who was a celestial or aasimar) and a pharaoh are true, and if so, learn which Pharoh it is. His reason for being in Wati is to be in a place, around folks that will help him learn it and make enough money to afford to hire those people.

I hope this gives you a little more insight than just the 'Background' 'Appearance' and 'Personality' that are on his page. If you're interested in my 'gaming style' feel free to check the different games, I'm in. I'm mostly at my computer M-F, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm EST then check games a couple times in the evening and regularly on the weekend.

I've been GM'ing for around a year now, a couple of things I've learned. Using google docks is fairly easy especially if you use the snipping tool and having a discord channel really speeds up communication.

If you've read this far thanks :) I'm Looking forward to seeing your character selections.

DM Skull, Thank you for being willing to run an AP, we players really appreciate it.

However, after a very busy weekend where I felt like I was not able to keep up with posting and everything else going on, I realized I probably have enough games on my plate. Due to that, I am removing myself from the recruitment process.

Again, thank you for running the game, good luck and good gaming all.

DM Skull, this is RH's unchained rogue, Kunala. I believe I've interpreted the 'House Rules' correctly. Please take a look at him and let me know if I can answer any questions or need to change anything. Thank you.

5K will be saved. Drektan turned down the feat to stay a catfolk, so maybe my two home groups and I overvalued the feat.

I thought Drektan came back a halfling. My concern would be keeping Kunala at least medium size. And Antonio is a Taldan rogue with a rapier. Won't he have to take a feat to use the sword? I'll see if I can find someone who's backstory with a little tweaking can put them at Olegs.

The AP's were written that way, and the newer classes have a little more umph with power creep, so I don't think the AP will be a problem; not if we make sure the bases are covered. But the mine was brutal, that's why I asked in game if we should look for another option. An unknown number of orcs in their natural habitat and a 200 ft rope climb, well, anyway, glad to see were headed for the AP.

You good with the 2nd lvl character having the starting 1,000 gp? I'm leaning towards cavalier, ranger, slayer, barbarian or bloodrager. It really depends on what backstory I can fit into the location.

GM Tribute wrote:

No problem.

Drektan declined the full reincarnation benefit--quote from before in the discussion thread.

"You will laugh, but Drektan is a halfling with a telepathic link to Sarah Jean. He also adds this bonus feat — spirit of the reincarnated +1 untyped bonus to all saving throws and AC (flat footed and touch too)
Some (including me) might say worth the 5K gold alone"

We can also move the aldori sword to Antonio that was exchanged with the Captain if Kunala is moving away from the dexterity build it requires. The sword will turn out to be very useful. Amelia can respec too while we are recovering. You will lose some of the cred developed with the Brevan's with Kunala, but some of that can transfer to Antonio with the named sword.

So would your recommendation be to let Sarak Jean reincarnate him, use the 'spirit of the reincarnated' and hope he's med sized so he can use the sword?

I'm less worried about needing a full-time bruiser if we're not going back into the mine.

I've got mixed feelings. I don't like bringing back low level characters that get themselves killed.

With the size of the original group I thought a non-traditional melee (15 pt buy) character might be OK for Kingmaker. With a group of four instead of six, a low AC low Str character is not the prime melee character, not for kingmaker, and especially not for this cave.

Would you be open to me bringing in a more traditional full melee character? I think (with the 15 pt buy) a barbarian or bloodrager would be a better combat fit. Maybe a cavalier or slayer.

Sadly, I tend to want to play characters that I have a little history with and those are few. Like I have barbarian who's a sailor, but he wouldn't fit here at all. I'd need to build something from the ground up for Kingmaker.

Antonio Nedraid wrote:

I have exactly one potion of cure light wounds.

It's not a "rules as written", but it is a common house rule that a healing effect given the same round as the fatality can prevent death; is that the case in this game?

I've played with one GM (possibly out of dozens) who did that and it was an RA game. Even having said that Antonio dropped the smoke and moved away, a little late to change the actions now.

I've been thinking about it, don't worry about Kunala's body. This early in a game if I have someone die, I leave them dead. Partially due to the cost and partially due to the character. I've not invested enough in the character or the AP to get really attached. If he was sixth or seventh level maybe. But not at second.

Érme Coin wrote:

True he's not dead, but he's down... in the face of a horde of orcs and likelihood is we'll never know if he's still alive or not while they remain standing.

Think I touched on that in gameplay the Emre recognises Kunala is likely for the pot or the bones on a trophy banner :S

if the one attack didn't hit, then his HP is 8 instead of 1, but he took 28 points of damage, so he's - 20 HP, I'm pretty sure he's dead.

That looks about right. I spent the last couple of days looking at it trying to figure out if there was a chance he was alive.

I remembered a post in one of your other game discussions that we were 'on hard mode' which I sort of like, but just a couple of bad rolls put you in serious trouble.

So the attacks on Kunala (8, 4, 18, 15, 19) the 15.18,19 hit 18 and 19 are crit's with falchions.

So what's the math on Kunala HP before the attack and after? Need to roll the stabilize.

GM Tribute wrote:
No, he is not dead.

That doesn't calculate. If were going to play 'Hard mode' roll the dice and let happen what's happening, I don't expect you to 'save him' due to bad rolls.

edit:We're in combat, roll the damage for three successful attacks, two successful crits. if it's not more than 13 HP let me roll the stabilization roll. If it's more than 13 he's dead.

I had asked in game, but will ask for more clarification here.

Antonio takes slashing: 4d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 3) + 4 = 16 and clings to consciousness as Kunala falls bleeding.

It looks like Kunala was attacked by five orcs with falchions, two would have been crits. It appears the regular attack damage is 2d4+2, which means the minimum damage with two successful crit. is - 20 HP. But no damage was rolled and no stabilize roll was requested. May I assume he is dead?

The reason he didn't stand with you in a defensive posture was twofold; one it hasn't been his style the whole game, two, your build is made for making use of flanks, I was trying to provide that.

Besides two fellows in light armor aren't going to hold off eight in heavy armor in rank side by side.

Shocked as he's splattered by bits and pieces of his friend and the orcs, Kunala hopes the coin sisters use the distraction to escape. Exhaling as the orcs rush past attacking, he focuses on the nearest, Magenta orc, chopping as the fellow goes past. Unable to dodge all of the attacks, bleeding from several wounds, he again chops at the same magenta orc, then brings his sword back into a 'high guard' to parry off another attack.

We may have lost Taddy, this is not the time to be undermanned. To encounter balance, Taddy will have to take out two orcs before he leaves :-)

I hope FS is ok.

I was in three different games with Drektan, he stopped playing in everything. I'm 'friends' with him on discord, he plays on there on a regular basis but he never responded to my question if he was doing all right or not,

I checked his other games, he hasn't posted on anything since May 31st. I didn't see any posts where he explained anything like a vacation or busy at work. So, who knows. He's not new to the boards but not a lot of posts for ten years.

Cursing under his breath as the half elf coin sister held her ground, Kunala turned to the half orc sister, not sure what to think. Shaking his head, he'd never considered himself a coward, always looking for a duel. He'd killed eight orcs before, but not all at the same time and none of the wearing heavy armor while he was tired and wounded. Exhaling, if he was going to die, he'd rather get it over with than being found hiding in an old mine.

Shifting his feet slightly he tightened the grip on the pike decorated blade. Charging down the cave past Antonio lifting his blade overhead, more like chopping wood than an actual guard. As he nears, he swings the blade down in a chopping motion at the Dark cyan 2 orc on the left.

Bless +1 attack Charge 30 ft. AC 15 attack: MW Aldori dueling sword, sword scion, power attack/ 'opportune parry and riposte'

Seeing the eight heavily armored orcs coming up the hallway, Kunala's eyes grow wide. His jaw drops as Antonio moves towards the narrow part of the corridor. Looking towards the coin sisters, he shakes his head. "Unless you've some magic we haven't seen yet, we can't possibly defeat this foe."

He gestures towards the dark hallway, "Do we run into the unknown or try to get up the rope?"

Relieved to see the orcs fall and the rest of the party arrive without falling, Kunala turns to Amelia, "I am wounded, and there are orcs coming from the south." He looks towards Antonio then the others, "Do we fight them here or run?"

Kunala only had one Panache point which I was trying to save, so he did not use it last round

"Blast!" Cursing as he misses the red orc, Kunala brings his blade around again. Dodging the attack from the orc he'd wounded, he wasn't expecting the second one to attack him as well. Feeling the blade cut deep into his side, he realizes he needs to finish the wounded orc quickly, or he would be overwhelmed.

Setting his feet he shifts the dueling sword to a high guard, quickly cutting at the wounded red orc. Pivoting, he brings the fiery blade back around ready to defend himself from at least one of the attackers.

MW Aldori dueling sword, sword scion, power attack
attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 1 + 1 - 1 = 20 for damage: 1d8 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 3 = 9
Kunala has 1 panache at the moment, if he drops red he'll have two. Either way if he is attacked he will use the panache point to parry.
AOO: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 1 + 1 = 27
If he kills red (regaining a panache point) he will use 'opportune parry and riposte' against yellow

Cutting the Orc, Kunala brings the sword around in a arch. Setting his feet, he sees the half orc Coin sister stab the other orc with her spear. "Well done Érme." He then chops at the red orc, but realizes too late, while he was looking away the orc had shifted slightly and his attack was off.

MW Aldori dueling sword, sword scion, power attack
attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 + 1 - 1 = 10 for damage: 1d8 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 3 = 10

Fun! We have two orcs, yellow and red. I'm assuming Kunala hit 'red' since yellow is too far away.

Did Red or Yellow drop his crossbow and run away? Or did both?

If yellow is fleeing, was he dumb enough to near Kunala for an AOO?

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

I hope it was amazingly fun busy and too tired from having a good time and not 'gotta get crap done' busy and too tired form stress to post.

GM Tribute wrote:

so sad, fortunately Kunala didn't need one dropping the 30 ft...

Hearing some sort of Kunala realizes Érme is dropping quickly. "Blast!" Cursing, Kunala realizes she must have spotted orcs. Following her example, Kunala descends the rope at breakneck speed. Dropping the last several feet as he draws his enflamed blade.

Seeing the orcs in the mine, he calls up, "Orcs!" Setting his feet, ready to parry and riposte' any possible attack.

Climb is a quarter speed, fast climb half that, so two move actions fast climb to drop 30 ft, will draw weapon as part of the move action. If attacked Kunala will 'opportune parry and riposte'

Are we using hero points? How did I miss that? So 2nd lvl, Kunala would have 2?

we could always climb back up the rope...

Kunala is second.

Raising an eyebrow at the girl's bravery, Kunala watched as the half-orc Coin sister began to descend. She was right, she had the best vision for the job, but that didn't make it any easier. Moving to the pit, he held the rope steady as Tacitus handed her the darkflare. Telling her, "Shout out if you see anything."

As Antonio was passing out torches, Kunala kept his hands on the rope trying to steady it, nodding towards his hilt. "Once I draw the blade I'll have all the light I need."

Seeing the half-elf Coin sister, causing a coin to illuminate he smiles, "Yes, apparently." He nods towards the depths of the shaft, "Are we better off dropping the light so we can see the bottom or will it draw too much attention?"

Seeing that Érme was clear enough for him to go, Kunala swings out on to the knotted rope. Bracing his feet against the wall and begins following the inquisitor into the depths below.

'Taking 10(11) on climbing

Seeing Antonio grab the rope, Kunala is about to nod his head 'yes' when The half elf Coin sister asked if the 'rope' was the only way down. He was about to make a crack about gravity, but paused. He thought about the last time he tried to climb a rope, it was fifteen years ago and swinging from a tree. Realizing he could probably get down the rope, but he wasn't sure he'd be able to climb back up it.

Stepping near Antonio he reaches out for the rope. "I hate to admit it, but I'm not great at climbing do you mind if we take the time to knot the rope so it's easier to go up and down?"

If no one objects.
Nodding to Antonio, he begins to tie knots in he rope about ever two foot. After a period of time he holds up the now knotted rope, "Ok I think were ready! Should we have ranged weapons read to support from above?"

Assuming no one objects here as well.
He looks around the room at his friends faces, nodding he drops the rope. "Who's going first?"

Bowing his head as the Coin sisters recite their blessing, Kunala waits until is seems like everyone is ready to continue.

Moving towards the building with the central shaft he asks. "Anyone have any idea better than dropping the rope and going down after them?"

He pauses, turning back looking at the burned out chapel. "I wondered if destroying the building into the mine would prevent them escaping, but we really don't know do we?"

Taking the half elf Coin sister's recomendation Kunala sits down and watches as Tacitus shuts the door to the profaned chapel. He'd been unsure about taking the chance to clear the mines, seeing this? He nods as Antonio spits and voices his opinion.

Hearing both Tacitus and Amelia say they should burn the chapel, Kunala starts to stand back up. "The sword's flame is only for light, not actually flame. But I have Flint and steel." He looks around, "Anyone have any oil?"

Fort: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Pleased that Antonio is able to disable the trap and enter the 'general store' Kunala waits outside near the door keeping a keen eye out. When Antonio exits with the crossbow Kunala smiles. "Nice crossbow."

Following along to the 'church' Kunala waits beside the door as Antonio picks the rusty lock. As the door opens, the stench causes Kunala's eyes to water. Seeing the look on Antonio's face, he turns and looks inside the door. His own eyes widen, as he stumbles away, pausing, hands on his knees, vomiting. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand he moves away from the 'chapel' to the woods edge where the Coin sisters are waiting. His eyes wide and still watering, he looks from them back towards Antonio and Taddy.

Bending back over, he places his hands back on his knees, vomiting again. Looking back at the sisters, his voice tense, his eyes wild. "The chapel if filled with bodies. Probably died of thirst in the dark" Blinking, "We should..." He pauses, blinking again, looking furtively from one sister to the other, "We should..." Pausing again. He looks painfully at the two women. "What should we do?"

Nodding in agreement with Antonio, Kunala points towards the building nearest the clearings edge. 12 "Good idea, may as well start with the one nearest to cover."

Turning towards Taddy as his friend commands his companion to guard the Coin sisters, Kunala nods approvingly. Leaving the dueling sword sheathed so its flames did not alert anyone, he moves with Antonio and Tacitus through the brush towards the nearest building.

Just a heads up, In the morning I'm taking a friend to the nearest 'City' (Columbus Ohio) for an out-patient procedure. So I will not be posting at my regular time. I'll be up later tomorrow than normal and should be able to get any posting done before I head to bed.

I'm assuming the 'bird scouting' report was this morning.

As they approach on the Northeastern path, Kunala pauses, reminding the others of what Sarah's bird had said. "Remember, the scarred soldier and orcs were seen this morning. I don't know if it's a new group or the orcs from the cave. Either way we need a plan." He looks towards Taddy and Antonio, the sneaker members of the party. "Do we want to do a little recon, or just move from building to building getting as close as we can?"

If I remember correctly, we spent the 5,000 gp. before Antonio joined us. So, it's a five-way split for 1,000 gp. not a six-way split for 833.33 gp. Or did Antonio not get paid in the other game?

I don't care either way, I just want to double check before I start spending gold.

I'm good either way, actually I'd rather have the money, but hopefully after this haul we'll have a little to spend.

Nodding in agreement with Tacitus Kunala finishes his breakfast, chuckling to himself watching the Lutist gutting out his hangover. As Sarah explained what she thought happened to Drektan, Kunala turned towards the Coin sisters. They were experts about money, nodding, "Ladies, you have a good grip on our need for money, could you work it out with Sarah?"

"Thank you Sarah, that is very gracious." Reaching forwards he accepted the twelve goodberries, and started passing them out to everyone, smiling at Antonio he adds, "I wonder if theses would help with the hangover." Giving everyone two berries, he slipped the last two to Tacitus, winking, "Just in case Maff get's in trouble again."

As they approach the camp, Kunala gestures towards the 'mine entrance' "Should we make sure nothing has been disturbed at the entrance before we inspect the last two buildings" as they approach the 'entrance' he watches carefully to see if anything is different.

Taking 10 (15) on perception looking to see if anything is obviously different

As the others begin to head towards the druidic sanctuary, Kunala, loath to leave the wealth behind, considers going back to the storeroom to gather some valuables. Realizing it would mean he was returning through the woods alone, he gave up on the idea and hustled after the others.

Arriving at the sanctuary, Kunala is appreciative of Sarah Jean's ministrations. Worn out by the days fighting, Kunala eats some of the jerky, cheese and bread he has in his pack. Shortly after he is done eating, he readies his bedroll. Placing his scabbarded pike-decorated blade close to hand, he heads to bed.

Waking slightly stiff from the previous days combat, Kunala stretches his sore muscles and goes through some of the sword forms to make sure he doesn't tear anything. Joining the others for breakfast, he helps himself to some of the scrambled eggs and pan-seared ham. Answering Sarah Jean with a shrug. "We we're near the northern portion of the camp at the forests edge when he disappeared. I don't know if he went exploring without us and was captured by the enemy or if he wandered off into the woods."

As he began to eat he watched to see if anyone else had anymore information on their missing halfling.

Kunala kept the Potion, caltrops and signal whistle from the fist orc he killed

Smiling as he cut down he orc, Kunala was not expecting the attack from the second one. "Aaaaggggghhh!" Letting out a scream as the axe bit deep into his shoulder, Kunala stepped back to get his bearings, relived as the others killed the last orc. Fishing in his pouch for the potion he'd taken from the first orc, he'd intended on using it for Maff, but as badly as he was wounded, he decides to use it on himself. Drinking the potion, the shoulder wound heals a little.

Moving his arm as Antonio asks about the last two building, Kunala chimes in, "I'm good with checking the last two buildings." He gestures towards the one that looks like a general store. "That one may have supplies to help us."

Two votes to try and get ourselves killed, one vote to pester the druids. Where do the rest of you vote? And no Taddy, Maff doesn't get a vote :)
