No, LitRPG is completely different than choose-your-own-adventure books.
Ready Player One is a soft LitRPG, for example. and it's currently rocking the world.
Life Reset - made me feel like I'm playing a D&D and an MMO together, I feel obligated to spread the news to other Pathfinder/D&D fans :)
Exactly, but believe me, its VERY satisfying. The good ones make you feel like you do the grinding yourself.
I can recommend Life Reset (I posted the link above),
and also Awaken Online - an awesome book about a loser becoming a necromancer king and the villain of a MMORPG game.
I recently discovered this awesome thing. LitRPG books!
It's written from a PLAYER perspective who's playing the game (usually in virtual reality, like Ready Player One) - gain levels, fight MOBs, crafting etc - everything that's awesome about RPG.
I've stumbled across this book which was excellent "Life Reset" @ http://goo.gl/H6sjzo
But there's much more like it!
I've actually reduced the amount of PC-game time to read them!
For my campaign, Hobgoblin will reproduce with Goblins.
What would be the result?
1) name for this new race (half goblin? hob-gob-goblin?)
2) appearance?
3) traits?
Thanks!
Lol! Catcrunch got me laughing :)
they live in a secluded valley, surrounded by monsters.
The name shouldn't sound stupid..
I'd welcome more suggestions
something courageous sounding, maybe a bit dark - but not overly evil sounding name.
something inspiring.
Idea?

Hi,
in our campaing, I'm allowed to select ANY creature as a personal familiar (it's basically reformed from a blob of mana)
the only limitation is it can be up to medium size.
So, I need ideas for an original familiar pet
please, no dragons - it's boring.
suggestions? let your imagination go wild!
specifically,
the group of adventurers went to Hell, and encountered a Bearded devil who uses the spell 'Unholy blight' against them.
the spell should cause more damage to Outsiders - now since the adventurer our not in their native plane, do I treat them as outsiders for the spell purpose?

the magical book contains (among others) the 'Animate dead' spell - which has the 'Evil' descriptor.
1. does the book as a magic item is conisdered evil?
2. does using the book to create the golem is evil (note: the golem is N).
is it by RAW?
because under the Concentration Check description, I didn't see any reference for multi class...
A normal wizard level 5 with 16 intelligence have a concentration bonus of 5+3 = 8
what happens when the same wizard has 2 cleric levels - and his wisdom is 14?
do we calculate the classes separatly or do they stack?
I mean, for a 7th level caster, to cast a cleric spell as level 2, a concentration bonus of +4 seems kinda low.
shouldn't the experience as a mid level character who specialize in magic be stacked - levels wise.
the bonus from high attribute for the check would still be intelligence for wizard spells, and wisdom for cleric spell.
so for wizard the bonus would be 7+3 = 10
and for cleric: 7+2 = 9
WDYT?
The faerie dragon is a good suggestion! thanks :)
The DM approved me to use the Leadership skill to acquire a cohort from the monster listings - to be kind like an animal companion or familiar (without the bond abilities).
I need advice on which monster can qualify for me needs:
1. low level (maximum CR 4-5)
2. tiny size - or lower.
2. can fly
3. has good knowledge skills.
4. has some magical utility abilities (not necessarily for combat).
I need to find some monster who's fairly close to those requirements, and the DM might allow me to do some extra small modification to it.
thanks!

it's not exactly pure Pathfinder rules, but it's pretty close, and I'd like to discuss how it synergize with the PF system:
so, let's assume an undead mob (swarm) - based on 3.5 edition rules, which are:
- made up from ~48+ individual zombies.
- about 200-300 HP
- take +50% damage from AoE attacks
- will save of swarm is high: +17
- CR 8-9
Now, when it comes to fireball etc it's very simply, a fireball that does 30 dmg normally, would cause 45 damage to the swarm. same goes for splash damage, and other AoE spells.
My question is - how does 'Channel Energy' computes into this?
1. by the basic un-PF rules, as an AoE power, it would simply do +50% damage.
2. however, the spell basically damage every specific undead in it's radius, so a good roll of 12+ damage (each zombie has ~12 HP only), could effectively destroy the CR9 swarm with a single strike - which is too powerful.
3. 'channel energy' targets are entitled to a will save, the swarm has an excellent save, but again, the ability target individuals - which has low save...
so that's my problem, how do I handle the Channel Energy of the cleric under those assumption - without making it tool of massive destruction and without nerfing it?
thanks!
EDITED:
p.s. I couldn't find official PF undead-mob template - if anyone knows one - I'd appreciate a link.
Of course they do, regeneration is the ability to mend physical wounds, and that's it.
creatures with regeneration can still die due to: old age, Hunger, drowning, poison, freeze to death, coup de grace, death effect.

"Whenever you are attacked or are the target of a spell that requires an attack roll, there is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead."
Note that "Black tentacles" is not a spell that requires an attack roll.
it's simply a spell that you cast. afterwards, the spell generate attack roll, but the successful casting of BT doesn't require any attack roll in itself.
A spell that requires an attack roll, like "Acid arrow" is an example that would apply to the Mirror image rules, but BT is not.
well, it's shockingly shocking! :-)
as the question - if a character with a shocking whip attempt to trip an opponent - and succeed :
does the opponent receive the shock damage as a byproduct of the trip (as it does touch the opponent)?
or not at all?
would it matter if the opponent is equipped with metal armor?
Jeraa wrote: In Pathfinder, there are no rules (or even guidelines) to follow to answer this.
In 3.X D&D, however:
Quote: Create Magic Items
A deity of rank 1 or higher can create magic items related to its portfolio without any requisite item creation feat, provided that the deity possesses all other prerequisites for the item. The maximum item value a deity can create is a function of its divine rank (see table). The item’s cost and creation time remain unchanged, but the deity is free to undertake any activity when not laboring on the item.
If a deity has the item creation feat pertaining to the item it wishes to create, the cost (in gold and XP) and creation times are halved Gods still needed to spend gold (and experience points too).
You're abaloutly right, I confused my 3.5e knowledge with Pathfinder....
A read a little about gods, lesser, greater, their abilities etc.
it's written that gods can create various special magical items - but that it also have it's cost requirement!?
I mean does a god have to physically have 500,000 gold pieces, or so, to create some sort of greater magic item?
and let's say that he does - he's A GOD - can't he simply create some, or otherwise, use his godly senses to sense a gold deposit and retrieve it - or better yet - go to a plane where gold is as common as dirt, etc...
And if after all these, the conclusion is that he still need the gold, how does he suppose to get it?
does it 'being sacrificed' for him by his follower?
cool!
I never encountered 'Wayfinders' before - thanks!

Untrue, only enhancement bonuses increase in cost, money value costs like (+X money like +1000 gp) skill bonus are kept seperate unless priced otherwise (shadow enhancement is +3,750 gp).
So Price is 5000 for both skills (technically not full skill bonus because only works for falling)but really 3K, then +1 enhancement, +1 for DR vs Blunt (remember it is only DR vs Blunt, as slash or Pierce bypass) with CMD at discount for 5 K.
+2 armor is 4K, 3K for skills (2.5 escape but only 500 gp for limited arcobat), 5 K for CMD= 12K excactly as price.
Adding new Abilities:
If the item is one that occupies a specific place on a character's body, the cost of adding any additional ability to that item increases by 50%. For example, if a character adds the power to confer invisibility to her ring of protection 2, the cost of adding this ability is the same as for creating a ring of invisibility multiplied by 1.5.
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items#TOC-Adding-New-Abilities
I'd say that an armor qualifie as "occupies a specific place on the body"
It's been a while since the last post...
has there been any new development on the subject?
any new special magical property to increase one's CMD ?
from:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-armor/specific-magic-armor/bonele ss-leather
The price seems waaaay to low for something this powerful....
the damage reduction itself, I think should cost like 10k gp...
how did they calculated the market price?
as far as I know:
- +1 enhancement bonus: 1000gp
- +5 Escape artist skill: 2500
- +5 Acrobatic Skill: 2500
- +5 CMD: ?
- DR 5: ?
and don't forget that multiple enhancements on the same item should cost +50 for each extra enhancement (which I didn't include above).
I agree that initiative is a factor here - if you unseat someone first - he doiesn't get to attack you

good tip.
ok, I came up with a set of rule that gives a significant advantage to character specializing in mounted combat: what do you think ?
Jousting Match rules:
1. charge: ride check 15, if fails get -20 to all of the next rolls.
2. attack: to hit opponent’s shield: AC 15, * if hit, gain 1 point in the game.
3. Dismount: Player with the ‘dismount’ feat can try a bullrush to dismount opponent.
Player without the feat can try a strength check against opponent CMD (much harder).
* Successfully dismounting counts as 2 points.
4. reprocation: if he was hit, the player get’s a cumulative -2 to all checks, dismount: -4 to all checks.
5. Repeat until 1 player achieve 3 points.
A level 5 fighter with good feat selction and equipment can get the +15 to ride - thus always suceed in the ride check, and has about +10 to hit - needing to roll only 5 to score a hit.
A level 10 warrior with no ride, may often fail the ride check, gain a -20 to hit, for a total of about -2\+2 - will have much ahrder time to hit and\or dismount.
So,
we have 2 mounted fighters on horses, charging each other with lances.
outcome can be: miss, hit and damage, hit and no damage, hit and unhourse.
how would you handle it with the game rules?
there would be need to be some sort of ride check, I'm sure, and attack... but how exactly ?
I think a 3rd level warrior with with +10 to ride, should win against a 10th level fighter with no ranks in ride...
how would you accomplish that?
Hi in "the book of divine magic" described the following magical property to add to armor:
Retribution: Three times per day, the wearer of a
suit of armor with this ability can cause the next
creature who hits them and causes damage – whether
by physical or magical attack – to take an equal
number of points of damage of the same type.
Faint necromancy; CL 3rd; Craft Magic Arms and
Armor, retribution; Price +6,500 gp.
My questions are:
1. does using this effect is an immidiate action at the moment the wearer recieve damage?
2. are we talking ANY kind of damage? does AoE spells count? ('hits' is a problematic word...)
thanks!
Yes, but as I see it - only one make a check, to see if it success or not, after it's confirmed as a success, everyone applies their damage.
in the 'damage' option of the grapple rules, there's nothing mentioned on multiple grapples....
Hi,
I had one of my players grapple by about 10 formians, and on their next round I've done 1 grapple check for all of them (as written by RAW), and then made ALL of them apply their damage 1d6+4 - in total of 10d6+40
the rules are not specific enough to say if it's allowed or not...
it seems to me reasonable, that if someone is swarmed under a lot of big insectiod, it stands to reason that they slowly rend him to pieces, instead of 9 of them just 'holding him down' and only 1 Formian does the actuall damage.
in any case, it was a GREAT way to finally deafet the undefeated 8th level cleric tank - otherwise he would have won (because the Formian can only hit him on a natural 20 roll).
Also - you can normally walk on sold earth as a natural ability -
but there are still creatures (earth elemental and such) that can catch you and pull you inside the ground.
In my mind it's the same situation as the one described here.
At v3.5 we had the flying-brain monster creatre - Grell
any conversion of it exists in Pathfinder?
even fan made link would be nice.
thanks!
remember it?
he was the big, 6 legged, Panther like creature that tried to eat the hero at the beginning of the movie, and the served him as a horse?
I reckon it will be a great monster to use in D&D.
I'd say it's size Huge,
with special 6 leggs attack (rend?)
and very dangerous (CR 10-15)
anyone up for the challenge, i'd be interested to see your interpretations to how it should look as a monster.

Errr....
Belt of +4 Strength cost 16,000 gp not 64,000....
suppose a Rogue throws an Alchemist Fire vial on an enemy from 20 feet away,
and the opponent would qualify for a normal sneak attack.
would the extra damage from Sneak attack applies?

Gauss wrote: Murgos the Mad,
My favorite item to show people why this doesnt work is Ring of Invisibility.
Ring of invisibility should be priced at 2*3*1800 = 10,800gp. Instead it is priced at 20,000gp because 10,800gp is too cheap for what it does.
Ring of Animal Friendship should be priced at 1*3*1800 = 5400 but is instead priced at 10800gp.
There are other items that are the same but you should get the idea.
On custom items my general answer is 'no'. After that I might go to a maybe. If your bday falls on christmas I might say yes. (joking about that last bit.)
- Gauss
Actually - no.
the base spell 'invisibility' has duration of min\level - according to the rules:
2 If a continuous item has an effect based on a spell with a duration measured in rounds, multiply the cost by 4. If the duration of the spell is 1 minute/level, multiply the cost by 2, and if the duration is 10 minutes/level, multiply the cost by 1.5. If the spell has a 24-hour duration or greater, divide the cost in half.
so double the cost that you calculated - it actually cost 20,160gp - I guess they rounded that down.
The CR of a creature that's based on PC's class levels is level-1,
so a goblin ranger 5, will be CR 4.
if it uses NPC levels, then the CR is level-2, so a goblin warrior 5, will be CR 3.
this template give +2 CR,
a while back in 3.5e there was a suggested rules to incorporate aquired template slowly throuw level progression.
you can divide the process of becoming lich to 8 levels - each level up the player character falls more and more deeply into lichdom - gaining more and more of it's properties, until after 8 such level ups he gains all the lich's properties.
that way, the transformation is relatively slow, and not overly unbalanced.
crit double the base damage that was caused by the spell.
if you did 50 damage - the crit will be 100.
if you got the base 50 because you naturally rolled high enough damage, or obtained it via feat - that's besides the point.
The Psicrystal stealth score is calculated wrong IMO in the beastiary - (assuming level 1 Psion master).
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/psionic-bestiary/psycrystal
in there it's stated that the Psicrystal has score of 6.
however, from the size modifier alone (tiny) it should be 8.
So the total should be: race modifier 4 + dex 2 + size 8 = 14.
My question is, does stealth considered a class skill for the Psicrystal, and so it suppose to receive extra 3 point for level 1, making his total stealth score 17 ?
It might seems a lot, but this score never changes, even at very high level the stealth score will stay the same (unless the master invested ranks in stealth himself).
a normal magic missile, with CL 3 will inflict: 2d4+2
an empowered magic missile, with CL 3 will inflict: (2d4 * 1.5) + 2
well, my question is answered - thanks guys!
what do you mean 'no psionics in PF' !?
what do you call this:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed
Can a Psion use a 1 handed weapon & a shield and still activate his powers?
I see nothing in the rules against that - and it sounds reasonable, since a cleric can do it.
Although RP wise, it seems wrong....
(Assume the Psion has the required proficiency).
Ok good,
that's approves my first understanding that dodge bonus is special type that is granted only by haste, ans some special specific other spells\effect, and can't be actually grafted permanently on an item, like deflection bonus.
While we're on the subject, do you know any item that grant DEFLECTION AC bonus that is not on rings ?
anyone knows of such a magic item that's define in RAW ?
StabbittyDoom wrote: To my knowledge, anything under that custom list is automatically "subject to DM approval". It is meant to be a rough guideline, not something that the players have ready access to. There's a reason it has "estimate" in the title. can you supply a link with that statement?
reading your reply gave me an idean.
while the following AC types: deflection, natural, dodge, armor, shield - are common and can be magical crafted on items, the other type will be decalred exotics and will require some special reagent - like "a tear drop from a holy child" for crafting a profane bonus type item, or maybe "a blood of a seer who saw her own death" - for insight bonus items etc....
