He can't actually succeed at this check (no training or thieves' tools)

After fumbling at the lock for a moment, he curses under his breath, then says, "Need a key or a stout knock for this."

"I can give it a try if no one is trained in the thief's art." Garren says, spitting on the floor next to him.

"I doubt he'd show it, even if he was." Garren says to Shane.

As the scholars in the group work on the symbols, Garrens stands near Seamus, bow in hand to deal with any more "pleasant surprises".

Seeing the sergeant, Garren salutes in a very surprised manner. Seeing his antics with the shocker lizard, the ranger says,

"If we're going to leave it behind, we should at least lock or jam the stairwell door as we go so it doesn't follow us and jump out when we least expect it." With bow still strung, the ranger moves to get a bead on the stairwell doorway.

"Getting a bead on it!" Says Garren as he sheathes his sword and draws his bow, running behind Shane to get a good view of the giant spider.

Angry, and a bit red in the face from being caught off-guard, Garren draws his sword as he runs up to attept to cut Azi free, though his efforts don't seem to bear fruit.

Garren returns Seamus comment with a genuinely quizzical look. "Useful, that."

After he finishes stringing his bow, Garren turns to Seamus. "I know you've got magic, but maybe you go first, since you've got scale, and I've got this," he says, gesturing to his well-worn cuirass.

I'm all for a standard marching order.

Garren lets out a short string of curses as he checks his backpack. "Stupid, mangy, misbegotten cur! Forgot my torches AND my flint!" He then looks around at his squad, "Anyone else remember theirs? It's going to be a pain otherwise."

Garren lifts up from his mug to look at the young spellslinger. "Someone looking at you, Shane? Not that hard, really. Remember that your goal is finding out whether she actually likes you or not. Women generally want men to make the first move, so just tell her you like her dress, or the way she did her hair, or some silly thing like that, and watch how she responds.
If she acts pleased, then talk to her about something else. If not, move on. Worst case, you'll have a tale to tell all of us tomorrow round the fire."
The ranger turns back to his mug, a wry grin on his face as he chuckles under his breath.

After thanking the good man, Garren goes to join the sergeant in the corner of the barroom. "Sir, I assume you know most of what the mayor was going to tell us already. Is there anything more you know about this tower and its being cursed?"

After helping clean up camp, Garren heads back to his bedroll. As he lays down, he says, "Nice work with that spear, Seamus. Maybe we'll have some free time on this mission, and you can tell me where you learned."

At the town

As Garren rides into town with the squad, the smiling villagers bring back memories he hadn't thought about in a long, long time. A little bigger than where I grew up, but not that much different. I wonder how Dirk and the others are getting along? Starving, like as not, with how much he hated working the fields.
