Is this campaign still on?

Sadly must say I’ll be away for National guard annual training until the 23rd, and won’t have stable internet access...

Fei had stayed quiet throughout the night, watching his companions. He had judged them harshly after the brawl in town, but they had handled the dwarf admirably.

Come morning, he said to the group "We now have some valuable intelligence about our quarry. So long as we can trust the dwarf. He did trade a valuable magical item for a drink of milk. Which to me, means that either he has a grudge against our foes, or is working for them. We should get moving, but let's do it cautiously. I can scout ahead. Would anyone like to join me?"

Fei walks with the group, feeling very ill at ease. At length he finally says ”Could someone explain what happened there? Why were you all brawling in the streets? Was the bartender taken care of? Because if he wasn’t then rather than making an ambush, we might be walking into one.”

Fei just sighed. This was...bad. Once he could, he made eye contact with Akira. That Kitstune seemed level headed, at least.

Bluff to pass a secret message...namely, it's me!: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

Assuming that Akira understood, Fei stepped out into the street, still in the guise of the bartender. "MURDERERS!" Fei shouted. "How dare you?! If I were you, I'd run while you still had the chance!"

With that, he gave Akira one more knowing looked, and walked into the shadows. He'd need to change his form and get away as soon as he could. He *really* hoped that the party had found a way to get rid of the real bartender. The entire plan hinged on ambushing the slavers, now that he had set it up. If anyone questioned the real bartender, well...it could all come crashing down on their heads. He tried to calm himself. While he didn't know anyone in the group, the elders had all chosen them for a reason. They'd have to trust each other. He glanced once more back at the bodies on the ground, and told himself Well, at least they can fight.

Walking out of the tavern, feeling mighty pleased with himself, Fei sees the unfolding fight. His jaw drops, though to be fair, it did not really look like his jaw.

What were they doing?! This was supposed to be covert. Get the information, get out. Find their missing kin. And now they were brawling in the street.

His mind raced. What should he do? He could take the form of a priest, perhaps? Try to stop the fighting...but people would question him at that point. He'd be a stranger, where it was strangers who were in the midst of fighting.

So he hung back, waiting to see how this unfolded. If the authorities came and arrested his companions, he'd need to get a good look at the faces of the officers, so that he could take their form to break his fellow kitsune out of prison.

To speed things up a bit, here is Fei’s suggestion to the half-orc, while he is disguised as the Bartender. (1) The halforc sets up a meeting with the slaver outside of town, near where we plane-shifted in from our village. (2) Fei tells the halforc that Cheliax agents will be waiting for the slaver, and will take care of him. Those agents are in fact, us. (3) Once the slaver is disposed of, him and the bartender will split the bounty offered by Cheliax. A bounty which is of course made up.

This lets us ambush the slavers on our own terms. Sadly I can’t take a half-orc form. If I could there could be more shenanigans. As is, we at least get to hit the slavers when and where we want to.

Bluff if needed: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Fei, in the guise of the bartender, took a long look at the half-orc, and then walked back to the bar. Looking around he grabbed the most expensive bottle he could find, and then returned to Ingotr.

Bluff: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Diplomacy if needed?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

He put the drink down, and then stared into the half-orc's eyes.

"Ingotr. We don't have much time. I've found us a buyer who is going to make us rich enough to leave this backwater behind. But we need to act fast, because I guarantee that there are other people already moving. Now..." He motioned for the half-orc to drink. "...you know that slaver who is coming to see you? The one with the kitsune? Well..." He smiled, trying his best to imitate the mannerisms of the bartender from their limited interaction "...he's made some enemies in Cheliax. I don't know what he did, but they want him alive. I promised that I could deliver him and his goods. The problem is, I can't do this alone, and I don't trust anyone here as much as I do you. So tell me, you ready to get your hands a little bloody for one last big score?"

”Ah, Damn. This is going to get us all killed, it we keep going on like this. I have an idea. Meet me north of town in three hours, don’t be seen. And keep the bartender away. I...am going to need him kidnapped. Just trust me on this. I don’t care how you do it, but find a way. Charm him, knock him out, whatever you need. Do it now.”

With that Fei walked into the shadows, changed his face into that of the bartender, took a deep breath, and walked confidently into the room

Disguise: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36

”Ricklus, Tomtom, Ivey, get out. There’s an emergency, game’s cancelled. You’ll all get twice what you put down to make up for it. Tell Willks to not bother coming in here too. Ingotr, you stay. I *need* to talk to you and it is worth the gold I just dropped.”

Sorry to take over, but it’ll keep the game going. I think with some good dice rolls I can get our ambush set up. Assume likeness let’s me take his form with disguise test, and sleeves let’s me match his clothes.

Fei stared at Akira. What was he doing? The bartender named the beggar by name. That meant that the bartender knew him. They weren't going to fool him unless they could take the beggar's face (a real option) but they had to know what he looked like first. He quickly stepped up. But not quick enough to stop Tally from talking.

Bluff: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

"Look, not important. What he meant was that he's heard of Willks. Just like how he's heard that this is the place to be to have a good time, and to either make or lose some gold."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

"And!" He cut off Tally. "And I, for one, don't care where he gets his gold. Because I..."

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

With sleight of hand, he pulled out a very shiny gold coin from his sleeve. "...have gold to spend. And if Wiilks can make the bet, I'll take his gold too. Mind letting me in?"

Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Eager to find the slavers, Fei took on the face of a bruiser he once saw at a tavern. Trying to imitate the man’s swagger nearly got him knocked senseless. It was, he decided, the wrong approach.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Deciding a different tactic was in order, he calmed down (and rubbed his sore jaw), and then took on a much more pleasant form. It was a merchant he had helped once as a watchman. Asking around with a professional air. It was much, much more effective.

Everyone can now read dip spoilers 16 and 18 as Fei will share what he learned. Also can Bluff he used for one mor shot at the intimidate spoiler?

Pacifism is well and good. Nothing wrong with a character who doesn't want to get his own hands dirty. So long as it means that the party can still stab someone when needed, we should be good.

Also, as an aside, shapeshifting is a pretty big part of Fei's character. So when he is in different human (or kitsune) forms, I'll be changing the profile picture. That should make it be pretty easy to figure out what he looks like at any given time.

”Buy them back and they will kidnap more for more profit. We will never be rid of them.” Fei snapped. ”We need to make a message. To send a signal. That our wives, sisters, and daughters are NOT commodoties for sale and abuse.” He sighed and rubbed his temple. ”I’m sorry. You mean well. But after you’ve seen children being kidnapped and sold by monsters like these, and to walk free after a few bribes...well, it makes me want a permanent solution.”

"As I see it, we have a few options. First, we can ambush the slavers. This will be the most direct approach. And, to be honest, it will be refreshing to not have to worry about 'due process' or any other such nonsense. This could take the form of setting up a sale, and attacking them when they come to buy. Or just hitting them on the road. Personally, I like this plan. None of them deserve to live."

"Or we could also infiltrate them. For example, if we could find one of his guards, we could murder him and I could take his place. Sneak the women out, maybe even kidnap their leader. What do you all think?"

I don't know...that sounds pretty hard. But I think we can handle it.

"3: Blue text only posts here, not in game play. [lake the last 4 posts]"

Sounds fair. Though I assume we can still use blue text to give non IC information. Ex: Swift Action: Arcane Strike

Looking at Yuichi, Fei smiled. "It was, wasn't it? Thank you."

Then, to Tsume "A slaver is not a name. It is a profession. It is someone who forces another person to work for them for free. These women are being taken to a brothel. Which is a place of, ah...how do I put it? A place where intimate affairs take place for money. Given that Cheliax is a place of demon worshipers and where slavery is not only legal, but is encouraged, I can't say that I'm surprised. Also, as they have a dozen slaves being moved, all who are of high value, we should expect a fair number of guards."

Sitting back, with a smile, Fei continued "Which shouldn't be too much of an issue for us. I mean, we're all kitsune, right?" With that...

Realistic Likeness Bluff to mimic Tsume: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (11) + 19 = 30

...Fei turned into a perfect likeness of Tsume. "All we need to do is take out a few of the guards, take their forms, and then walk right in. Easy, eh?"

Fei has no idea what other kitsune can or can't do. So he assumes that if he can do something, then all other kitsune can as well.

It will be an honor to serve the community. I am humbled by the trust placed in us. We will bring them back.

Fei thanked the child. He was expecting something like this to happen. The warm welcome, the food, the place to stay. Everything had it’s price. Which was good. This he understood. This meant he could get rid of that feeling of doom which he had felt since arriving by making everything square. The kitsune wondered though, what he should wear for such an occasion. Adjusting his sleeves, he activated their magic to ensure that his clothes were not just clean, but spotless. Looking around, he found another kitsune with an outfit that he liked, and willed his clothes to change into what he had seen. They looked well cut, but not ostentatious. Now, feeling dressed for the occassion, he set off for the temple.

Fei sat with his back to ‘his’ house. It was odd, looking around. Seeing ‘kitsune’ walking around, going about their business. On one hand, it was comforting to know that he wasn’t alone. On the other, he had spent his entire life thinking he was special. Unique. He chuckled. Nothing made much sense any more. Least of all this place.

From what little he could gather, there was a group of elders who controlled this place. And it was their favor which determined who you were and what you had. He hoped that he would have a chance to meet them soon, or to earn their attention. Maybe with this ‘trading’ beginning he would get his chance...

Thanks for the heads up. And that’s quite a project you got on your plate.

I like this honor system. Luckily (for) Fei, despite being a Rogue, will abide by the honor system. If for no other reason that one of his main goals is learning what being a kitsune means and belonging. Well...assuming he gets in.

Looks like this will be a unique campaign for the lucky ones who get in.

“I am changing the Point Buy from 21 Point scaled, any layer who rolled can take the Point buy of

22 Points buy [with a buy rate of 1:1] [Max 18 min 8 before race Adjustments]

This can be taken in place of your 1st and only stat Roll

Stats updated with explanation in the profile. Would anyone want to link backgrounds? I’d like to have another kitsune recognize Fei Wan for what he is and bring him to the village. I could use a made up NPC, but it’d be more fun with a PC.

Well, then I guess I recommend that if you preview your rolls and they are low, don't submit. Just wait a day and they'll change?

Like I said, there are flaws to rolling stats as part of recruitment. It's just exaggerated with an extreme method like in this game.

So get recruited and cheat then?

I’d recommend worrying more about fluff submissions that stats...

2d8 ⇒ (7, 2) = 9

With a 15/15/13/13/13/11, What I could think of...

Kitsune Inspired Blade Swashbuckler: Str (9) Dex (17) Con (13) Int (13) Wis (13) Cha (17)
Do this for 1 level for dex to damage. Then go Enlightened Paladin for 4 levels, with lvl4 giving you Cha18. This gives you +4 AC, +4 all saves, and 2 uses of personal challenge. Then go back to Swashbuckler.

Kitsune Lore Oracle with sidestep secret: Str (13) Dex (13) Con (15) Int (13) Wis (13) Cha (17)
For this Cha works for AC, Ref, CMD. A pure caster with decent HP and AC.

What I’m saying is...2 15s gives you decent options.

OP:

“21 point buy OR roll 2d6+7 once picked you must keep it.”

That’s all he said. Where does he say do 21 point buy and then roll after selection? You keep saying it but I don’t see it.

21 or roll, must keep. So I rolled.

If he said “21 point, and if picked roll 2d6+7 I would have done that.

Please show me where I am misreading this.

Just to reiterate...

GM asked for no builds. Just character concepts.

Player 1 rolls: 15/15/13/13/13/11. He writes up a great character.
Player 2 rolls: 18/18/17/17/16/16. He writes up a less great character.

Player 1 is chosen. Player 2 isn’t chosen. No issue on party imbalance.

Or...

Player 1 doesn’t even put forward a character. He isn’t chosen. He doesn’t get to play.

Even worse...let’s say rolling doesn’t happen until characters are chosen. Player 1 has a concept that just doesn’t work with low rolls. Player 2’s character doesn’t make sense anymore as super-kitsune. Player 1 quits. Player 2 goes forward with a character that no longer makes sense.

—-

In other words. Just roll, and write up a character you want to play. Don’t worry about people who might not get in. Especially those who rolled stats but haven’t made a submission yet.

An example of how crunch can help define a character...

Was bored and put this alias together. Made me pretty excited to play the character.

Lvl 1 Feat: Realistic Likeness (You can precisely mimic the physical features of any individual you have encountered. When you use your racial change shape ability, you can attempt to take the form of an individual, granting you a +10 circumstance bonus on Disguise checks made to fool others with your impersonation.)

With stats and class, ended up with...

Disguise: +20 to fool others in regards to Realistic Likeness
Bluff: +10
Improved Steal Feat.

Comes out to be a pretty interesting character to play. Can see someone, take their appearance, and can Bluff pretty well to make it believable. Feels very Kitsune and should be a blast to play.

Will probably need skill focus Bluff to make it safer though...
