Melkiador wrote: There is a difference between "breaking" the door and destroying the door too. As a kineticist you have a scaling big damage attack, that can surpass the Hardness on most objects. Even Adamantine only has hardness 20 and only 40 hp per inch. Past low level, it's just a matter of time until you cut through any door.
As for the behavior, it's not unusual for GMs to work on a whim of what they want to fit the story they want to tell. The GM probably thought the keycards were so important that he didn't want you to just bypass them. And so he made up a flimsy not well thought out excuse of why the door breaking didn't work.
That is why for the keycard doors, i put up with it, but now the next area also has techn doors, he likens to the bulkhead doors in a submarine, and is saying the same thing, this will make almost 5 levels of my ability being useless despite the module having break dc's, ehich he already ruled how the ability worked, and is now going back on.

Just to be clear to people, i have broken one reinforced wooden door, that any barbarian could have broken. I ripped open one portcullis, again, a reasonable break dc that was in the module that any decent strength based character could have at least lifted open/broken. 2 metal doors in a wrecked space craft(they also had a mid 20'ish break dc (without sliding keycards, or they didnt work? I dont remember exactly) thats it. Over the span of 6 or 7 levels. Its not like i have been ripping every single door down. I have also had it brough to my attention that these doors HAVE a break dc, a friend of mine checked it out, and wouldnt tell me the break dc but did tell me i had more then a 20% chance to open them based on the ruling made by the DM.

<y kineticist has chosen early on in his career to get telekinetic haul, specifically for doing things like ripping doors out and throwing them at people. My gm came up with a way for us to figure out how strong things would need to be. Essentially i take the max weight of my throw at the time and figure out the corressponding strength that would be if it were a heavy load. This means at level 8, it is 8000 pounds, or 4 tons. The first area we ran through i was easily able to use my ability and break wooden doors (didnt even need the haul honestly). Then we came to a portcullis, using this formula we determined i had to roll a 17 to break the portcullis out (it had actually split the party when it came down, so added bonus was to allow the other half of the party into the fight. I was successful. There was much rejoincing. My character even began to declare himself the "bane of doors."
Then we got to a new area. This new area had sliding metal doors (star trek style) with keycard swipes. I was told without being allowed to roll any checks, my ability could not rip these doors out. I was like... are you sure? I can lift 5k pounds now... Gm said nope, cant do it. And i said, okay cool, whatever, lets roll. We got in pretty far until we found some more doors exactly like the others, but the keycards didnt work. THIS time i was allowed to rip the doors down, only to find some sort of nanite/poison thing behind them. We eventually got through it and managed to get it retrapped by some other doors, whatever that was kind of cool... weird though right?
Then we hit a tower controlled by an evil wizard. Om the way we find one of the doors had been damaged by a hill giant (str 25) and they tore a part off. We kill the giants, take it back, our rogue fixes the door. We enter the tower. Now, we are level8, meaning i can do 8k pounds if i activate telekinetic haul, or equivalant to 44-45 strength. The gm still tells me I cannot haul open these doors because thats not how blst doors work. He cites they are adamantine and glaucite combinations but i simply cannot do it. Now its been going on 4-5 levels of him simply saying my ability doesnt work, so i decide i'm kind of fed up. I ask him if this is the way his things are going to work, and i am cool with it if they are, i feel like i should get a free reteain of the class ability i chose, since i am being told constantly it just wont work. He starts telling me he has worked with doors like this and hes not going to "just let me walk around ripping doors out" I reitr=erate, thats fine, but i should be able to swap this out. He says i can when we have time to retrain.
I find this assinine. Itd like he decided he just doesnt want my power to work, but that i also have ti be punished and pay for it and take the time to retrain it because of the way HE has changed the way things work. So, i have been pretty sick this last week, and it was kind of last straw. I disconnected from the game. I left a VERY long rant on our discord server about hos his behaviour seems more "whim based" adversarial, and that he seems to be doing things he things is fun at the cost of the players and are not consistant.
The most important part of this all is, I have been playing with group for over 8 years. I love all our current players, I have gm'ed for all of them, and have been gm'ed by all of them, including the current one. I have never had an issue that couldnt be resolved i njusta minute or two of talking before, so not really sure what to do going forward. Did i act too crazy? Who was in the wrong? thoughts on the matter?
ANY Constructive criticism, even polite finger pointing is welcome and encouraged!

I have fought constructs that were capable of disarming my swashbuckler, and part of their action includes locking the weapon inside their body afterwards, so it cannot be reacquired. There is the "your weapon sticks to X" effect some mimics have and a few other creatures, My cavalier kept charging a mimic door and leaving the lances in it, while pulling another out for the next charge. Several spells that can whisk your weapon away or destroy it outright. There is actually quite a few reasons to have a backup weapon. My backup weapons are rarely any different then the primary though. The swashbuckler mentioned earlier had has +1 ghost touch adamantine scimitar taken away, so i began fighting with my cold iron scimitar, when that got taken i switched to a silver scimitar. My aforementioned cavalier had a +1 ghost touch lance, with a +1 cold iron lance and 3 masterwork lances. Also, any character i have that doesnt wear gauntlets usually has a cestus JIC.
My jack of all trades crazy rogue/magus/cleric/bard/brawler/hunter/ranger uses a halfling sling staff with 2 others for backups, as they are melee and ranged.

I am unaware of them adding specific gods to kineticists, considering kineticists came so much later then most of the gods. I, as a LOVER of the kineticist, and at least 8 different ones i have played/am playing, I usually use deities based on the element in question. Ymeri for fire, Kelizandri for water, Hshura for air etc.

Um not sure where you served if at all, but as a medic for 14.5 years attached to infantry, your statement is entirely incorrect. The gunner carries a couple hundred rounds with his gun, and his spotter carries the rest. It's a two person team. Furthermore, in the platoon, there is one "gunner" squad usually consisiting of 5-6 persons, maybe as many as 10-12 but thats very rare. Each team consists of 2-3 people top, plus the squad leader The other 20-25 have nothing to do with the weapons team ammo supply. That all being said, party loot is for the party to use as needed and should not be hoarded. Individual loot, well, that depends on whom you have in your groups. I am very tightfisted on most my items unless i need them to return to combat effectiveness. A friend of mine however, spends around 80% of their stuff on consumables and throws em around all willy nilly because it amuses him. I have seem him stop cart with tree tokens, slide down a mountain on a swan boat, throw campfire pearls just to toast marshmellows, glue someone to a chair for a prank, and then even provide the universal solvent...

My hardest hitter and fun build is a halfling cavalier/hunter hybrid. If your gm allows the beat rider archtype to allow you access to an axebeak, its my favorite mount for this build. I use this build in pfs with a boon allowing me the axebeak.
Outrider halfling
Level 1 Beast Rider/Emissary Cavalier
level 2 and 3 cavalier
level 4 hunter (for access to cheetah spirit spell to allow for massive charge distances.
level 5 hunter for outflank (incase mount has same reach as you on charge)
Level 6 7 8 9 all cavalier
level 10+ hunter
Feats used in this build are mounted blade, ride by attack, risky striker spirited charge, wheeling charge. Hunter teamwork feat is escape routw so you can make charges without provoking aoes from anyone.
Using a lance on a charge at level 10 would allow for a cleave like attack on a charge +20 to hit, 3d6+69 (+2d6 for thino hide) and if i challenge my foe it adds another 21 static damage. This is a x3 damage build which becomes x5 on a crit...
The hit is relly high so you can rock a +1 ghost touch adamantine lance andncarry some dummy lances. Now this may not seem terribly ffective because, oh no charge lanes! how will i ever... let me stop you right there. All your movement issues will be taken care of by the mount.
Mount feats :
improved unarmed strike
dragon style (charge through allies and diff terrain)
step up
swarm dodger (you dont need this, i just like it)
extra item slot belt (if possible) i gace mine a con belt (if your mount goes down this build is fcked)
Now the other issue would be mount size, once you can get a large one, do it, you have enough ranks in hunter at that point to use reduce animal as a wwand or spell if its too big for where you need to go.
This build can cahrge through difficult terrain around a corner and through allies up to a distance of 500' by the most restrictive readings of cheetah spirit and a lot further if your gm is loosey goosey. This is a cannonball in combat dealing massive damage with quite a few tricks to get around all the normal issues with a similar build, its only REAL weakness is an extremely low will save on the mount, and if you lose the mount you are a s%%+ty offtank. If you are the tiniest of rooms or a 5 foot corridor, you should have a scimitar or something j.i.c. but that has never once happened to me on the character yet.
Some of the big notes, halfling for better ride skill and access to risky striker which hass same impact on damage as power attack with a small loss to your ac, ut considering you are charging constantly you can often just charge out of melee range with ride by, and then there's always the dropping for sover ride bonuses if neccessary.
I have ended many a boss fight with a single hit.

Its not hard to roleplay a thief without screwing the rest of the party over. In one game i am playing a quickling/changling assassin/thief. When the game started, I informed everyone when we find loot I am going to steal some of it if its something my character thinks he can get aeay with, so i will "skim a few coins of the top before turning to the party and showing them what i found" but when we dole the money out we all get the same amount, because while my character might be a jerk, i actually like playing with my friends. Its not hard to roleplay you are getting more money and gems etc, just behind the scene do the split accordingly, perhaps the rest of the party found a deal the rogue didn't, or whatever you need to justify it, but my character doesnt track his gold constantly counting it every few seconds, so this method works just fine while allowing the bit of "thievery" to occue without people being upset.

Why don't you think people can't do both? I'm a handsdown powergamer, ask anyone I play with. Not ashamed. HOWEVER, everyone of my 40+ PFS1 characters, my 2 D+D5E, and all my other RPG characters, have a theme, for story purposes. Just because I make them ALSO quite good at what they do, and powerful to boot, doesn't mean I am compromising my 'theme'.
For example, I have a PFS1 Grippli that licks people all the time, and uses his tongue like most people use their hands. So I went aberration bloodline, and made him capable of delivering touch spells at up to 25' at level 9. I focused on Spell pen, and maximizing my dice/damage per spell, but he is VERY often getting in trouble because of his theme.

I have been gm and p-layer since 3.5 and have abso9lutely seen the gm vs player mentality. There are a few certain GM's I outright avoid in Society, when I can, at least with specific builds. Their interpretations of the rules (gm's) are quite often shoddy, and at least one in particular, will tell you you cannot do/go/charge/move where you wanted, because X, but you declared it already so you have to change a target or do nothing... I have nearly lost several charge based characters in 3.5 and PFs due to this gm style.
As a GM, I have seen players "modify" a rule, or alter its meaning by a clever trick of language to try and cheat past a feat, or do something undoable. I have seen a rock thrower claim they could throw sling bullets with full ititerative attacks, while dual wielding at level 1, and they didn't even have quick draw....When I informed them they could not, they proceeded to complain about how their home GM said it was fine, and went to ask all the other GM's present, who sided with me.
That being said, with the 80+ some odd people I have interacted with in over 17 years of play, I am pretty sure those issues can be counted on two if not one hand.

I believe, given the same rules for grappling, whichever spell grappled first would be the primary, the secondary spell would be considered "aiding" the first. So i would increase the escape dc by 2. This is a base extrapolation on the rules that exist, and not the letter of the law, but i feel more than reasonable.
You hit on the purpose of both, targeting different things, as well as needing two saves. Also web can be easily defeated with a torch, black tentacles cannot. As for the reach, i would conclude yes, they can reach approximately 20' up as well.

that kind of ac is what youd get fighting a plate wwearing, tower shield wearing fighter type. Even maximized for AC my armor master fighter was at 36 at level 5... his weakness? He hits like garbage. Sure you might need a 20 to hit him, but his return should be pretty crappy too, sometimes its a war of attrition, however, there are lots of ways to 'penalize' this. YOU might not be able to, but what about the rest of the group? Glitterdust to blind, slow, ray of exhaustion/enfeeblement would make them most likely unable to carry their stuff... Alchemist fires/acid/ice/lightning in a bottle type stuff hitd touch ac, etc. sometimes you need to modify your fighting style.
I get it , it sucks when you cant do your job, like hit the enemy, but sometimes them the breaks. My group is currently playing iron gods, and no one in a group does heavy damage, so these hardness 10/dr 10 enemies seemed at first, unstoppable, until we began to just start grappling things. As soon as we realized we could grab them, and pin them for coup de grace, things changed very quickly. Increasing your to hit, is the first though, but I urge you to look outside the box...

As the rider in question, I spent a good deal of time looking into it, to ensure it worked that way, as it does seem amazing for mounted characters (especially hunters that ride their mounts like i do) If it were changed to only allowing it to be used for withdraws, i sure wouldn't have taken it, and i don't know many people that would. That being said, I feel ishould make note based on a few responses that i think this might be a request looking for a society based answer.
Also i want to note, I have no bias against the question in either way. If it can be proven in either direction i am fine with it, as a hunter i always have the option to swap out a teamwork feat :)

I would rule using mounted combat on another pc as a no, because its literally jerking your mount out of the way of an attack. The combat trained mount, will follow the action and dodge, whereas the player mount with its own levels, int, ideas etc, is not only stronger hence why they are carrying you, but also not nuanced to what that sharp tug on them suddenly means.

So if i shove you off the top of the empire state building, the ground isn't my weapon? In all your time of playing, your characters have never tossed someone off a cliff with the intent for the ground to harm them? The ground is absolutely there to impose force. You dont toss someone off a cliff and expect them to hang there for all eternity or fly away (hopefully) you intend for them to fall, down onto the ground taking the corresponding falling damage.

I have a verminous hunter that uses the scorpion. It's not the best, but heres why i like it. I am a helpful halfling with a naginata. I use my action from behind my scorpion, will eventually ride it, to aid it's grapple check, giving it a +11 to grapple at level 1. So as long as it hits, we can keep one foe out of the fight, additionally, if i can, i will go to flank giving it the bonus, as well as the aid another for a bonus to hit and +6 to grapple.
The biggest issue I see with a vermin, is in order to give them any feats or skills, you must first give them an intelligence score. I plan on doing so as soon as i can, adding a headband slot, and giving it some actual intelligence and focusing on it's grappling ability. Once iot becomes capable of doing so quite regularly without my help, I can begin helping my allies. It's not an op build, but i have shined in every encounter i have brought it in so far.
I also used the halfling alternate racial to give it a bonus to strength, to make it a bit more useful.

You cant write a good story from point A to Z without following some form of line. Therefor, most are written in a way, that the writer thinks is the most common way it will be interacted with. There is NO WAY someone can write to include every possible direction someone will think of. EX: In one of our PFS missions we had to assail a jailhouse full of goblins and a large pet scorpion. So we bought a donkey, loaded it with some alchemist fire and gunpowder, and lowered it into the scorpions grounds with a rope. The scorpion attacked the donkey, and exploded. The goblins came running at the noise, as is written they should when they know intruders are about, and they ran itno the yard, while we snuck around and shut the door on them from behind, and burned them all to death. NO AUTHOR i dont care how good they are, would see that coming. We essentially cleared three fights for around 300 gold, and no attacks being made.
As for the "goals" not actually being the goals? Thats the EXACT OPPOSIE of a video game. In a video game, you know your mission, you do your mission, you succeeed. In quite a few games at PFS our end goal didn't even effect our prestige, because we were supposed to "learn" something or figure out an alternative better option based on the information we had a chance to receive. Is it frustrating to think you succeeed and failed? Sure is. We always ask what the actual goal was and when we are told, our gm's explain it to us, and i have never been upset about the outcome.
It seems like you said prepping shouldn't take long? If you want a fluid session, sometimes prepping is HUGE. I am usually a skimmer, with quick notes on the adventure pages, but there have been times i needed a day or two to write things down because of wonky mechanics. If you got what you wanted with a more open story that would require FAR MORE time to prep, and probably turn off a lot of gm's.
As stated many times there is a rule to allow customization of some scenarios. Dm's have the choice when to do it or not. Sometimes it completely ruins half the scenario, so they may choose not to. It's their table, their call. Ex. We had a psychic mind read the correct npc on murder on the throaty mermaid 5 minutes in, so we already knew who the murderer was. That was not included in the adventure, but is obviously legit to do, and he did. That being said it was still fun because I CHOSE To have fun with it.
It sounds like you had a few bad experiences, which i cannot speak to being the gm or the story, but the common thread in the previous 104 posts, all of which i read, seems to be you having already decided you don't like it. So did you ever think that your biggest issue isnt the writing or the gm, but is in fact your own attitude? Seems to me you are a bit of a negative nancy, and just trying to force your negative view upon people, by haranguing them into your point of view.
A, I saying you are wrong? Absolutely not! There are a few adventures whivch lead almost no option to even try to go off rails, and thats just fine with me, because they make sense. The writer is allowing you to take place in their story. You are NOT making the story. Some writers have a broader skill allowing for broader options, some don't, that's life. I can do complicated calculus in my head without a calculator, does that mean everyone that cant sucks at math? Do i tease them for it or complain? Nope. I accept it, and enjoy helping showing or explaining. Maybe I have more patience because i am a father of four 2yr, 3yr,10yr,13yr old children. I'll tell you right now with all honesty and not intending to be insulting, you are acting, at leaszt in this post, just like the 13 yr old when she doesnt get her way.
Your basic stataement is that the modules are written linearly, like a videogame. They are. That way the story CAN be written as a guideline to the story with everything connecting to make sense. If you dont like this, then you are correct, this is not the medium for you. It IS however a basic neccessity.
I GM 3.5, 4th and PFS over the computer every tuesday night, (urrently on a break now) and I do an open world. This means i have a skeletal story but let the group decide what they want to do about it. I also have about 500 pages of notes JUST from the last campaign level 1-5. Do you really think any company is going to make a protfolio adventure like that? Do you think people want to pay 60+$ to buy it? SURE!~ Some might, but my money is on a big fat no from most when asked. Therefor, You seem to have gotten your point stated, everyone has basically disagreed, why not just let this thread die now?

If i jumped through the window though, i could reach with my tongue to make my shocking grasp hit. So i told the gm i wanted to crash through the window to cast my spell.
His ruling was to do so, against a closed window, would be to make an unarmed strike for free against it. The problem is, I have a 5 strength and am grippli do my damage was something like d3-3. Froggy went splat against the window, and fell prone...

our preferred house rule, is taking half rounded down of your HD and adding it to the same die for example. a d8 = d4+4, d6 =3+d3, d12=6+d6. This means you always get higher then your average rounded down.more useful for smaller HD true, as a wizard would only lose 1-2 max hp whereas the barbie could lose up to 5... but it works well enough for us.

What kind of damage is the actual kinetic blade? Is it fire? Slashing, piercing etc? Is it JUST magic?
Since kinetic blade is allowable with vital strike, and it strikes at bab= class level, then at level 6, you get the added dice to the attack right?

So my plan is to make a grippli aberrant sorcerer who can climb on ceilings and use his gtongue to deliver nasty touch attacks from 15' away. This will require weapon finesse and the agile tongue feat, which requires two feats, which means, if i go straight sorc, i cant do this until level three, but if i use an unchained rogue for level 1, i get a bunch of additional skill points, more hp, free weapon finesse, when i do use my rapier i intend to carry (princely). Seems like a while mess of bonus, but the penalties, is one level behind spell casting for a sorc, and slightly reduced bab. Thoughts?
THIS WILL BE PFS LEGAL, and mustg stay that way!

There seems to be this mistaken impression that anyone here, including myself, gives a damm about what people do in their home games. The only reason I ever give an opinion on such activities IS BECAUSE PEOPLE KEEP COMING TO THE BOARDS TO ASK FOR ONE. BECAUSE APPARENTLY THERE'S A WHOLE SEGMENT OF WOULD-BE GM'S WHO DON'T HAVE THE STONES TO TIE THEIR OWN SHOES UNLESS THEY GET A BOARD CONSENSUS ON THE MECHANICS TO DO SO.
/rant mode off. Well, perhaps instead of ranting you should read the original post more. Considering he asked "what would you do" I explained what i did. Which, i am fairly certain is an acceptable response to his post. Therefor, turn down your volume before you get the thread locked, take a breather, have some ice cream, and return with a better attitude.

As a DM you have all the power. Deities are a fickle bunch. In one of my last campaigns, I had a Mummified Hound Archon guarding the prison of Lilliana the World Eater, a Vampiric Marilith (cr 28. I told my group in the beginning of the game "this is not their world, good and evil aren't black and white, not everything you might think is evil is, be VERY careful....
Yet when the alchemist saw the mummy he chucked two fire bombs on it, nearly killing it. It turned around and used crushing despair an aoe spell to fear and paralyze anyone within 30'. The ranger was 35' and full attack'd killing him.... Thus Lilliana was freed. She is currently regaining her power, while the group tries to gather enough "retired" heroes and resources to stop her from achieving her world ending weapon, currently guarded by the worlds strongest Archmage El.
So yea...a mummified hound archon, who gave his life to his Goddess to keep her most powerful enemy under lock and key... Not all undead HAS to be evil, it's your world... enjoy it.
