Destany sends a sling bullet winging off into the distance, missing completely, then starts climbing down off the roof, knowing she will be more effective with a melee weapon in her hand than this strap of leather.

to hit with sling: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

does that constitute a fall, or just a failed check that just means no progress?

Destany stays perched on her elevated spot and waits for Dmitri to start things off with either diplomacy or hostilities. Either one is fine with her, though if it is hostilities, she'd rather be up close and personal, with steel in her hands rather than this strap of leather.

Destany practices a bit with the sling, then makes sure she has plenty of bullets. She hadn't used a sling since childhood, but it was a skill like any others and not easily forgotten.

Before the bandits are scheduled to arrive, she takes her place on the walls, hidden but able to stand and fire when needed...

"Ah how I wish I had a crossbow... I'm not even skilled with a longbow, so someone else should use it... That of course leaves me with no missile weapon, but I could stand behind the gates when the are opened and be ready to engage them directly. Unless of course someone has a spare missile weapon I can use."

the unfortunate thing about summon nature's ally is that it only lasts 1 round per level, so wouldn't be too helpful as a lookout.

"If we end up fighting them hand to hand, I am ready, but if we are to take initial shots with missile weapons, have you one I can borrow? A bow or crossbow and some arrows would be a welcome lend, if you have one to spare."

Destany finishes off her stew, sopping up the last of it with a piece of bread, and looks at Oleg and his wife a long moment.

"I think we can be ready to face them when they arrive..." She turns to Blake, her head tilted curiously. "What did you have in mind about choosing not to fight fairly? Perhaps setting some traps for them? I'm afraid such is not my forte, but I can help if directed what to do."

"Thank you for the fine meal, ma'am... Issue? Please elaborate..." Destany is pretty sure she has an idea of what that issue might be, but feigns total unawareness, hoping to get more information that way than if she makes assumptions.

"I don't know about the others, but I'm afraid I won't be staying long, or partaking of the meal, as I find myself a little short of funds at present. Unless of course you would be willing to trade such for my services as a weaponsmith, that is, if you've a forge here."

Destany slips inside, though she doesn't seat herself at the table, but stands just inside the door, facing the man, waiting for his reply...

I can take last watch - being only human and not having any special vision, it doesn't really matter, but it puts her on watch in the morning when it's first getting light.

Destany rings the bell with two sharp pulls on the cord, then stands back a few paces, waiting for the gate to be opened, or their presence challenged. She wasn't quite sure which to expect.

Destany wasn't used to such long overland travel or camping outdoors, but was quickly learning to adapt to her new life. She never complained about the conditions along the way, but it was obvious this was all new to her. She was so grateful to be free of her prison cell, any freedoms were a blessing, and so she had nothing negative to say about being on the open road. She quickly learned to assist with setting and breaking campsites and keeping watches at night, all with a quick smile and eager participation.

As the party approaches the outpost, she smiles and her step grows lighter. "It seems we've reached our initial destination." As the party comes to the closed gates, she nods toward the bell... "Shall we ring it to announce our presence?" She reaches for the cord, unless anyone objects for some reason.

"Leaving right away and getting a half day's travel is fine with me. I don't mind sleeping outdoors, I think... It's an adventure, after all. Let's hear what the others have to say..."

Destany bids the man good fortune and better choices than to work as an assassin in the future and leaves him to find his own way in the world.

When they receive their satchel, she takes her share of the trail rations and puts them in her pack. "Thank you for honoring the writ and for the directions."

what time of day do we arrive in the village? I mean should we stay the night and leave in the morning or leave immediately?.

Unless Blake has any objections, Destany goes down to talk to the prisoner.

"You have been forthcoming with information and for that we thank you. You were promised your life if you gave us the information and true to our word, you will not be hanged, as the captain wished to do with you originally. I do have an offer to make to you."" She pauses a moment before continuing.

"If you wish, you might consider traveling with us, joining us on our quest as a sort of, well, hireling. We cannot pay you much, but I suspect we will find wealth along the way and you can earn a part of that as your pay. Of course you will be paid commensurate with your worth in our emply. Your other option would be to return from whence you came and face the wrath of the black-cloaked man. The choice is entirely yours. Please think about it." She smiles and places a hand gently on his arm as she speaks.

When she's done, she stands and heads back out of the hold. Halfway up the stairs, she pauses and says, "I'll be back tomorrow for your answer."

She heads to the cabin to rest, perhaps even to sleep the rest of the night, if nothing else happens.

Destany lofts a brow at Dmitri's almost reconsideration of their agreement with the would-be assassin, but says nothing until he is out of earshot. "I think for a moment he was thinking it best not to let the man go. But we gave our word, and I am loathe to go back on my sworn word, even to one who wished us harm. I think if we let him go, we'll not see him again. Unless of course you think he might be useful as a henchman. He has nothing to go back to if his story is true, and is in need of employment. Why not encourage him to work for us?"

I know none of us have leadership feat or even allied cohort, but could we not have a hired henchman?

Destany shrugs, purses her lips a moment as she considers the options. "Either path is fine with me, whichever the rest want to do I am eager for. As for the would-be assassin, I agree that he told us what he knows, and should earn his life for that regardless."

Destany nods to Daen, and continues up the stairs, hoping the others follow along.

Destany pauses in surprise, thinking they were done here, and watches Daen with the prisoner, listening curiously. The man obviously had more experience with such things than she did.. and knew or suspected something she didn't.

Destany nods her head slowly, purses her lips. "So, you agreed to come after all of us, with assassination as your intent and only managed instead to beleaguer one of us, and not much luck against him. You aren't much of an assassin are you? And yet finally you've been forthcoming at least. I will speak with my companions privately about your fate. Perhaps you have earned your life. We shall see. Have you anything else to say for yourself before we make a decision?"

She stands and makes for the exit. "You can remain here while we make our decision." She leaves the bound man in the hold and motions for the others to join her as she walks up the stairs out of the hold.

"We can inform Fyrek and DMitri of what we've learned and discuss our next move."

"Who offered you money? And what was your exact task? Come, man, answer the questions."

"What were you trying to get away from? Who sent you and what was your exact mission? Answer me truthfully... Your life depends on it." She smiles at him, but her eyes don't carry the warmth of her smile just yet.

Destany isn't surprised really by Fyrek's withdrawal to be with Dmitri. The man was charming in his own way. A little scary and creepy but charming. She turns her attention back to the man in the ropes. When he's awake, she carefully doesn't touch him, though at one point, she reaches out as if she's going to stroke his cheek, then pulls her hand back.

"Well, you're awake. That's convenient. We have some questions for you. Before we ask them, however, you should know you are on a boat and the captain wants to hang you for attempted assassination on his sovereign vessel. We've made arrangements with him, that if you answer our question to our satisfaction, he will allow us to grant you your life. Therefore, your responses here are your ticket out of hell. Do you understand me fully, assassin?"

Destany nods in thanks to Daen for his assistance with the knots. "That's an unusual knot, I don't think I've seen its like before...thank you for the aid."

Once the man is well-bound, she casts another Cure Light Wounds on him to wake him up.

"I will talk with him if you'd prefer it were me, Daen, but of course your assistance would be most welcome. Questioning prisoners isn't exactly something I have experience with, so this will be new for me." Destany looks at the unconscious man and sighs.

"First, however, he needs to be conscious before we can speak with him. Though I guess it would be best if he were bound before I heal him again." She searches him for hidden weapons or other items before binding him with her rope.

Destany looks from one to another of her new companions, learning a bit about each of them in their reactions to this new quandary of what to do with the assassin. She stays mostly silent on the matter herself, listening to the others, but she does nod when Fyrek mentions trading his life for information.

"I have to agree that questioning him and offering to trade his life for information might inform us as to who might have sent him and why. It would be good to know."

ouch - didn't even notice I misformatted the dice roll... well with only 3 points healed, I doubt he's conscious yet - you can tie him up before I try another cure spell.

Can't question him if he's still unconscious - but you can tie him up before he can try to run... and our DM will have to adjudicate whether or not the healing brings him back conscious - I don't know how far he's under 0

She calls on her connection to the infinite and quickly incants the proper words for a cure light wounds.

Hoping it's okay to respond, having been asleep previously...

Hearing the shouting and the rush of folk to the deck, Destany rouses herself and heads out on deck. When she sees the tableau there, she pauses, wondering indeed what has happened. She kneels down by the dying man and checks his condition, then looks up at Dmitri with a questioning gaze and asks softly, "Do you want him alive?"

that's a good question... might be on him, or an item he's carrying, which would mean it moves with you... or an item on the ship, in which case it wouldn't move with you guys.

Destany is likely asleep in the cabin unless the merchants have claimed it as theirs, in which case, she'd have set out her bedroll in an out-of-the-way spot on the deck. Since we didn't set up watches, she'd be wary of that, and will have assigned herself a watch during part of the night... I'll give her a 30% chance to be sleepy but awake during the midwatch...

Destany looks troubled when she sees the scars on Dmitri, a tiny scowl piercing her brow, though she says nothing about it, as there seemed nothing to say really.

How to tell him I feel sorry for his pain, when he seems rather proud of having received it? And inflicting it as well? I guess in my own way, I've done no less, though not as a practiced art. What an odd faith he has, but he does seem devoted to it. If he finds solace and inspiration in this, I guess that's something to be admired. Too few folk have enough real faith.

Her brow smooths after a moment and she flashes Dmitri an understanding smile.

Destany purses her lips in thought as Dmitri answers her quite directly and honestly it seems. "I'm no expert on the greater powers, but a Daemon lord? Still, from what you told me, you were nurtured well under the auspices of her church. And I cannot fault the service to order. You have been nothing but kind and courteous to me, so I will take you at face value. Thank you for being honest with me. Many would have lied, you know, to hide their dedication to a power most would consider... unsavory." She gives Dmitri a little smile, even a warm one.

I hope his dedication to law is stronger than his service to evil. He seems a nice enough young man, though a bit strange. But being raised in a church to ANY faith I think would make someone seem a bit... different. I was raised in the wilderness with no one but my family for miles, so I know how it is to be alienated from the rest of society. Perhaps it was the same for him.
