After the stupid bird has left, Chuffy watches as Torod puts up a valiant but doomed effort to stay awake now that they've stopped. Just as Torod dozes, he hears a delirious Torod say, "You've been paired with a failure. Before this day is out, I'll have failed another." Chuffy snuggles up to Torod for warmth. That's it. Chuffy accepts Arabeth's help, but when Torod comes running up to help, at first, Chuffy bites at him. Only after Torod asserts a measure of dominance, does the gruff marsupial allows Torod to tend to him. After just a few moments, Torod is done with his new companion and is off after the boy's tracks. His elven eyes allow him to travel well into the night.

Chuffy doesn't like all the attention. More than once as the group is being ushered to the moot house, he has to stop himself from dropping the fireworks and cutting someone.
