Charyx's eyes wandered over the webbing around the room, before looking onto the spider as Reknar pointed it out. Readying his bow, Charyx knocked an arrow into place as he studied the giant spider, ready to take aim and fire should it even flinch. Happy to have a rope to help him down, Charyx slunk down the side of the cliff as Ryyx fluttered on his head, though not taking off quite yet... Athletics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 Charyx reached the ground safely, Ryyx happy to not have to take off due his master making an embarrassing mistake.

Keeping his bow at the ready, Charyx stood up from his investigation into one of the barrels. "The rats weren't the only things stealing fish... too many fish missing to be the reason. Whatever did take it had a big appetite..." Not a good sign. Charyx kept an eye out for troubles... but was more interested in where the rats came from. Keeping low to the ground and towards the back with Daxur, Charyx seemed wholly focused on keeping a lead on where the tracks were going. So it was probably a slight surprise when he actually spoke. "...how did Tamily recruit a spell-casting goblin?" he asked, evidently directing his question to Daxur himself. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Charyx relaxed his posture as he straightened up, whistling again as Ryyx ceased his rat gnawing and flapped back to his master's side, taking up residence on his head and beginning to groom himself of the mess. Keeping his bow at the ready, Charyx let the others speak on his behalf. He was more interested in the hole the rats came through. Slinking up to the makeshift cellar exit, Charyx knelt down and investigated the ground. The rats were big, yes, but something told him they weren't the culprits behind the missing fish. Vermin rarely were. Participants, perhaps, but back in his warren, pests like these were more likely to occupy old abandoned tunnels - why dig one when you have one already made? Squinting at the ground, Charyx tried to see if there was anything to be gleaned from the tracks the rats made. Perhaps something else had passed through here... Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Charyx hummed as the rats fell one by one... still a few more to address, though. Pursing his lips into a strange shape, he let out a quick whistle as Ryyx started to chitter, swooping down onto one of the rats to bite its ear off. Meanwhile, he leveled his bow at the rat nearest to Amunet-Ra and released more arrows towards it, hoping to bring it low and out of the fray. One action to use Command Animal, two more to attack rat #6 and hopefully put the little bugger down. Using Ryyx's two actions to move close to rat #4 and attack with his jaws. Shortbow 1: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 = 261d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Charyx turned and leveled his bow at Daxur as he arrived, pausing a moment and realizing that he was supposed to be here. Slacking on the bowstring, he lifted a claw to his muzzle and pointed to the noise coming from the far wall. Slipping down past Reknar and Kromnir, Charyx leveled his bow at the far wall and took aim, ready to put an arrow into whatever had the unfortunate luck of coming into view and getting close. Two actions to stride twice, and one to make a Readied Strike on either of the rats if they approach. Readied Shortbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 121d6 ⇒ 6

Charyx remains neutral in his expression as he listens intently to Amunet-ra explains the tenets of Sarenrae and her faith. He stares in contemplative silence for a moment before nodding. "Yes. I think I should... I want to know why you would show anything mercy." he paused a moment as they ventured inside, checking the tension on his bow as Ryyx poked his head out again, happy to be out of the sun. As Kronmir took the lead, Ryyx finally crawled out of the pack and flapped into the air, chittering quietly as he did. Charyx pulled back his hood, drew an arrow and readied his bow, following up at the rear and keeping his yellow eyes on the darkened corners of the room... and more importantly, out of sight. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Charyx continued watching the symbol for another moment. One could almost be forgiven for thinking he was ignoring Amunet-ra. However, he spoke more quietly, seemingly to himself. "(She carried that...)" he muttered, before finally looking up at Amunet-ra. "Lady of the Dawnflower? Is that who that symbol belongs to?" he asked, before following up with, "...what does the Lady of the Dawnflower do? Does she spare enemies?" Reknar's compliment draws Charyx's gave for a moment, earning a nod. "...thank you. He's all I have left from my tribe." he explained. The mention of the gold, however, immediately catches the kobold's attention, locking his eyes on Tamily. However, he didn't seem all too pleased by the amount. He bore his fangs a bit and growled slightly. "10? 20? That's all!? That's absolutely-!" Charyx started to angrily protest for a moment, but he stopped for a moment and glanced back at Amunet-ra's symbol of Sarnrae, then back to Tamily. He quickly composed himself again, took in a deep breath, and closed his eyes. "...unnecessary... if you asked for help from someone like me, it must mean you were already desperate. I do not need payment." he stated, making a bizarre about-face on the subject... though, judging by his grit fangs and grumpy expression, he didn't like doing it.
Male Kobold Ranger 1
Charyx was likely an odd sight in Otari. That was fine with him - he stood out everywhere he went. The others had probably seen him roaming about, especially in front of the temple to Sarenrae. Amunet-Ra had probably taken notice even - he didn't exactly hide his constant stares at the holy symbols around the entryways. He seemed almost bizarrely transfixed by them. Even now, as he approached, his little yellow eyes seemed hypnotized by the cleric's holy symbol. To say Charyx was surprised to get a letter for request would be an understatement. This Tanderveil must be ludicrously desperate if she was reaching out to him of all folks in town for aid. But he answered all the same. The last to arrive, and likely the strangest of the band. His red snout stuck out from the hood he wore to try and shield his eyes from the bright sunlight, a bow nearly as tall as him in his grasp. Every so often, the flap on his backpack lifts and shifts around a bit, before going still once again. Charyx doesn't say much, too busy staring at Amunet-ra's holy symbol for a bit, but when he realizes the others are waiting on him, he nods. "I'm Charyx... just Charyx. And this is Ryyx." he nodded to the lid of his backpack. On cue, an enormous bat head poked out, sniffed at the air, groomed itself a bit, and then ducked back inside to avoid the harsh sunlight. "...we're not from around here." he clarified (perhaps unnecessarily), before turning to Tamily as he spoke. "You needed help?" As Tamily explained the situation, Charyx listened and nodded along. Now he grasped why he was called in. His and Ryyx's propensity for dark environments would certainly be necessary. "That shouldn't be too hard. Is it just the one thing down there?"
I have the most ridiculous and fantastic idea for this campaign. If they're allowed, I'd like to submit a kobold Snare Setter Rogue/Vivisectionist Alchemist, who wants to become a doctor and a stop a plague from his home region... except he is not very good at the whole "bedside manner" thing... and the "healing" thing... and the "surviving patients" thing... but he wants to try, dammit! 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Ouch... amazing set of rolls...
I wonder if it's too late to drastically change my submission... I'm thinking for my first foray into Starfinder, I should write a core race... like a human. I did have a stupid, but possibly hilariously effective idea: an "action vlogger". An up and coming Absalom info sphere blogger who earns some internet fame with a droid building series, and decides to up the stakes in hopes of getting a bigger audience by joining the Starfinder Society and vlogging his adventures, with the aid of a camera drone.
Nah, no worries about my toes! I firmly believe that a player should play what he likes! Sometimes it's nice to have multiple characters with the same class - makes for good friendly rivalries and companions! Charyx is infinitely curious having never really been off his home world, and he is always interested in how other folks use their technology. So another mechanic will instantly pique his interest. @GM Friendly - Question that I forgot to ask: can a drone take Improved Unarmed Strike? I was thinking of having the drone take the feat, and explain it as him whooping things with his tail...

I'm planning to go with a drone, specifically a dragon one that resemble the dragon god his tribe worships. My plan is to use it as his main source of combat - if things get dicey, he runs to his dragon and mounts up. If I can afford it, I plan to purchase a flame rifle off the bat and mount it on the drone, so it actually has a breath weapon!
That is... a weirdly amusing easter egg if I've ever seen one... @Gm Frosty Truth is... I don't really have one beyond 'I absolutely adore underdogs'. And honestly, you cannot get much more underdog than a kobold, mechanically or within the narrative. For some reason, they make my creative juices flow a bit more than your standard core races (not that I can't make core race characters I like, I just favor kobolds... for some reason.) I guess I just love the fact that on average, they are designed to fail unless you play with every advantage that you have, which demands you make more use of rules you normally wouldn't consider. I always feel like it demands you soak in your current situation, which makes you all the more attached to the world you play in. You can't swing your sword at an enemy and make it go away. Heck, you sometimes can't even just sneak past in the shadows. I feel like playing a kobold demands having some sort of plan in place, which can make it all the more dangerous and all the more epic if it succeeds. The odds are not stacked in your favor, but you have to push on in spite of it. Because, honestly, pressing on in the face of insurmountable odds is what makes heroes so.... heroic! And I think it's amplified when that hero is a creature who shouldn't be winning any fights at all. /rambleEnd

History:
Charyx was never really comfortable around his tribe. Always on the fringes and mocked for having to squint into the darkness of their snarl, Charyx was often left alone and to his own devices while the rest of his tribe worked. Which was probably why he stumbled clumsily into the chamber of some gnoll warlock while trying to carve out a new tunnel on the edge of the snarl. Captured and nearly sacrificed for some arcane ritual, Charyx was saved at the last moment by Sa'lucia, a drow priestess of Sarenrae. Taking pity on the frightened kobold, she eased his fears, healed his injuries, and left on her way.
But Charyx followed after her, fascinated by the grace and kindness with which she had acted. She was a drow! Why should she care what happened to a lowly kobold miner, who wasn't even accepted among his own kind!? Slowly and cautiously, he continued to approach her on her journeys through the caves, eventually working up the courage to approach her and ask why she saved him. Ecstatic to see him take such an interest in her religion, Sa'lucia sat Charyx down and explained the teachings of Sarenrae, and how anyone could be redeemed if they really worked at it. She herself used to be a bickering member of a drow noble family, but after happening on the holy book of a Sarenrae cleric years ago, she devoured the scriptures endlessly, finding a new purpose in her life. Although Charyx didn't fully grasp the principles she was trying to convey, the concept of an accepting deity who granted you power out of sheer kindness appealed greatly to Charyx, and he asked if Sa'lucia would teach him about the faith, to which she all too happily agreed. Months passed, and although the faith turned out to be more work than Charyx bargained for, the progress he showed and the praise Sa'lucia gave him kept him driving for success. But alas, his teachings were about to take a nose dive. Sa'lucia's family had caught up with the wayward drow girl and demanded that she stop this nonsense and either return home, or be killed. Sa'lucia firmly refused, and in the ensuing battle, was gravely injured. Desperate to help his mentor and caretaker, Charyx planted himself behind a rock, casting a massive shadow on the cave wall and, with the cavern's acoustics, loudly declared in his Draconic tongue that he was Charyx the Red, and that the drow were trespassing on his dominion. Firing bolts of burning energy, Charyx made enough of a convincing show that the Sa'lucia's family made a break for safety, leaving their sister to her fate. As Charyx knelt at Sa'lucia's side and watched the life slowly drain from her, she smiled at him and gave him her scripture of Sarenrae, the very text that had converted her to the faith, entrusting the manucript to the kobold. With her last breaths, she asked Charyx to continue her mission and prove to others that, no matter how seemingly insignificant and irredeemable others may seem, they could be changed, just as she was, and just as he had been. She also told him that a few pages in the back of the script had been left blank, a gift from her to him, so that he could fill them with tales of his own successes, and to read her own for inspiration... except for the final page. That one, he should only read when he truly felt he had become a true agent of the Dawnflower. Charyx swore he was be a testament to her work, and at that, Sa'lucia smiled and closed her eyes for the last time. Since then, Charyx has ventured to the surface and traveled the lands of Taldor, hoping to inspire others and prove that even someone like him could be inspired to do good, especially by someone who walked the path before him. 10 minute background: Step 1
-Charyx is a traveling Cleric of Saranrae, who is trying to emulate the drow priestess who sent him along the path to begin with, Sa'lucia. -Charyx was rescued after fumbling his way into the ritaul of a gnoll warlock-in-training, which, unbeknownst to Charyx, was actually an attempt to turn him into a winter servant. -As he is still a fledging student of the faith, Charyx is not entirely confident that he is representing Sarenrae's teachings properly, a notion that leaves him feeling seriously inadequate. -Charyx is never without 2 things on his person - a weathered manuscript of Sarenrae's faith and a pendant necklace Charyx took from Sa'lucia before she was buried. He keeps both of these as reminders of his task and to honor the woman who helped him see the Dawnflower's light. -Lately, Charyx has been sensing something cold coming from the north, and whatever it is is strangely familiar, though he can't place why. He is traveling to Heldran in hopes of possibly finding an answer with the sudden arrival of the winter winds plaguing the surrounding area. Step 2

Male Kobold Ranger 1
Charyx is the most civilized of the bunch (so he believes). He is a leader, so naturally it comes with awesome perks and responsibility... and he has to be the leader because he is the only one who can handle that kind of responsibility. Basically, an arrogant Professor X. Frail and weak physically, but a mental powerhouse and believes he is in charge because who else is as amazing as he is?
Male Kobold Ranger 1
My understanding is that the heroes started out the AP, and then died, but not before making buddies with our tribes. After they died, our tribes came together and said "They actually had a pretty good idea going there, why don't we pick up where they left off?" So the best and brightest from each tribe have volunteered to take over the task of making a kingdom for us to call home. For my part, Charyx would be interested for 2 reasons: 1) he sees a great opportunity to put himself and his kind in a much deserved position of power, and 2) he would see the other races joining this alliance and go "...oh hell no. We need somebody with some brains to keep things from falling apart." (And who better than the orderly and organized kobold?) Even if he's not technically king, he sees himself as the brains behind the crown, no matter who ends up on the throne. He'd love to be king himself, but he also wants to continue his studies behind the scenes, where he works the best. Hence why I say the Professor X of our group of X-Men. :P
Robert Henry wrote: dotting, will be putting together a Gnoll, Raised by a human merchant that had done business with his butchered tribe (who were wiped out by one of the 'Tribes of the Carrion King' for not capitulating). He will probably be a barbarian or bloodrager. If we get put in the same group, there is probably going to be a lot of smack-talk and definitely a lot of rivalry. And anger. Lots of anger. Probably an unfair amount of anger.
Dotting with my submission: Charyx the Furious, a kobold titan mauler barbarian who wants to reclaim Kelmarane and learn the fate of his hero, Sir Massimo Cavallo. Because screw optimization, I'm a kobold who dual wields great weapons! And that's awesome! ...though I do hope we have someone who can translate Draconic, because I'm too stupid to learn other languages. >.< Current Campaigns
