Hello, this is dog

...I don't think it's an actual turtle...

Definitely the church. In the event of demonic invasion, Cernan would rather have Clerics at his back than Commoners.

@Eli: If you can't get a straight answer out of him (even in private), maybe Cernan can annoy him into saying something revealing in front of a large number of witnesses.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Knowledge (nobility): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Profession (scribe) to see if the scribes are behaving oddly: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

"Before you send us off for that remark, hold for a second," Cernan adds, having previously remained silent. Checking to make sure his words will be recorded, he speaks carefully, if not pleasantly. "You mention your experts on fiendish threats, but, well... this is not such a demonically-inspired city, and I do not know how informed your experts are. So I would like to add counsel of my own first, in the hope that it benefits your soldiers."

"The fiends we fought are the sort not known for their intelligence, leadership, courage or initiative. Imps are small, and weak, usually preferring murder to mischief—the slaughter of a town, though they might revel in it, is not something they could plan so flawlessly in the first place. There is a mastermind behind this. A lesser fiend would not be so crafty; to the best of my estimation, a greater one would not wish to deal with such miserable fiends."

"For a handful imps to destroy a whole town requires coordination from the sort of powerful fiend that likely commands more than just one handful. Or, we are dealing with a human master—one powerful enough to summon, employ or bind multiple fiends for a long duration. The magical items they carried were strange enough to any but a magic item crafter that this bears further consideration."

"We have been led to believe that this city may come into the line of fire—which is why we came here with all haste—but what my colleagues have not yet made clear is that we do not know, and should not underestimate, the true size, nature, or mastermind of the threat we disguise, and I beg that you not underestimate any risks either."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan... does not influence people...

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan comes along; as long as he doesn't talk too much, he's got no problems talking to people in authority.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

"Yes... the important thing here will be getting everyone on the same page."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan waits outside the cathedral. "If this only serves to delay us further in arming another city," he grumbles, "maybe someone will finally take me seriously about the need for timely haste in matters of demonic invasion."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan is fine with either the General or Lord Mayor, but he'd rather not turn this into a misinformation-filled swarm of rumors by going to the gazette/inn or talk to a priest about what is clearly a military concern.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Might actually make sense for people to split up, though—have the people with charisma talk to the mayor, people with military/law enforcement training talk to the cops, and people with religious bent talk to the pope.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

My computer,s fritzing right now... but Cernan definitely supports going straight to the authorities FIRST, and worrying about tabloids/popes later.

Unchained is pretty neat. It takes 3-4 feats to get there, but there's now very limited +Int to hit and damage with attacks.

I can craft at 1/4 rate on the road... so I think that's about 1/day, as we travel.

Which is a bad pun at the instance that every one is kind of a Cleric... (^_~)

I recently played the new SSB for the first time, and upon discovering that Dr. Mario was once again playable made a number of such remarks.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Probably not; it doesn't make much sense for the character. I can always pick it up next level. Doesn't anybody else have Detect Magic, though?

Oh, right.

I'm not sure if I see the use of a Necklace of Fireballs in a campaign where all the enemies are fiends...

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

I guess Marius, Arabeth and Aeryth are the obvious targets.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan can dish out a bit more healing today to whoever claims it.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

It can bluff pretty decently, it probably doesn't respond to torture, heals fast enough that we'd have trouble tying up, and is constantly invisible when not in combat.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

It's... very hard to capture, imprison, or interrogate an Imp.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan un-disables himself, then stands up.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Hey, Marius—any chance you can start memorizing Faerie Fire?

EDIT: Whoops, not how Hunters work. Maybe learn it at level-up, then.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Fair enough. My argument would be that "using an item that targets an enemy" counts as "targeting the enemy." But GM wiggle room trumps rules arguments, so, cool.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

"For purposes of this spell, an attack includes any spell targeting a foe or whose area or effect includes a foe"—and the necklace functions as the spell. And requires targeting a specific area with a throw, rather than just letting things fall. But there's always GM wiggle room in everything, so.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Hmm. Using a spell-casting item on enemies normally breaks invisibility. Maybe these guys are extra-stealthy.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan stands, and heals Arabeth.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

How high up is the imp? If it's 20' or less, I don't need to know the exact square and can just target the whole area with a Color Spray.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Ooh! I'm awake! Do I get a move?

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Azmaria, the thing is about 70' in the air, which means it's probably at least two range increments away.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Well that channel will, at least, stabilize everyone. Cernan, on his turn, distinctly does not bleed to death.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Oh boy, -7 hp!

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

If you want to calculate these in secret, or just make a bunch at once, the info should also be on the spreadsheet IIRC.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

No worries, I was outvoted.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

How long is this journey, exactly?

And we certainly can't ride a wagon overnight. The animals pulling it need to sleep.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Option B, because it will save us quite a few days, and Cernan doesn't want to risk arriving at the site of another massacre.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

A light horse can go 40 miles in a day—but we can kick it up to 50 or so with healing spells. A cart can do 16.

That means that if it would take three days by cart, it will take 10 hours on horseback, and we can arrive by nightfall. If it's 3 days by horse, we're talking 8 days by cart.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

So... the cart option is still far, far slower than horses. In fact, it's about the same speed as walking.

If we use the gold we forgot to spend, that's more than enough to get fast horses for everyone who needs one. If we rest for 10 hours a night (and the horses only run for 8 by default, so we'd more realistically be resting for like 16), we can sleep in shifts without any issues.

Meanwhile, the characters who have left the party (but are still NPCS) could take the mules and carts and our baggage and follow us, arriving a few days later.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

I don't think we've got enough money to trade everything in for fresh horses, so that may be the best option—though if the equestrian-enabled party members can ride ahead an arrive a day early, that might be better.

Cernan can sleep on the cart, since he's got his own small cart anyway, IIRC.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan only has a mule, although he came with it.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan would support buying horses, as mules would tire at night and need resting anyway.

His biggest concern for the local authorities is whether they have means to send or receive communication better or more reliable than a Sending.

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

"She thinks the fiends are coming to Resplendent, not Vigilant, next—and suggested that trouble might have already arrived. I believe it may be wise to depart as soon as possible, on the fastest horses available."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

"Maybe this time, we should buy some horses," Cernan mutters, mostly to himself.

California Dreamin':

"Everyone was dead. Worse than just 'trouble,' and it seems they were killed just before you even sent us. Might want to tell whomever you're getting these warnings from that they gotta be a little more timely and specific."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Cernan will sleep normally, so he can oversee some blacksmiths during regular business hours.

Cernan isn't even a regular Arcanist; he's a White Mage. In his perspective, "Wizards" are just impudent youngsters with too much ambition and not enough natural talent.

"The Mayor has gone so far as to strongly suggest that the whole attack was just an assassination—or at least, that he believes such an explanation more likely than random fiendish attacks."

Detective Cernan's on the case! *** M Aasimar (Emberkin) Arcanist (White Mage) 2 *** Party-at-a-Glance Spreadsheet

Why, wait for an attack, of course! :p
