Bizzlemont pulls himself up on the beach, gasping for air. He turns back to the water and he sees the frenzy continuing. The gnome concentrates for a moment and a loud bang erupts from the water right near where the crocs. Cast Ghost Sound. Level 4 gives me a sound as loud as 16 humans. A lion's roars is the example.

I don't think I want to know what the 'death roll' would have done. Swim: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 The small gnome floats to the surface and he begins splashing awkwardly. Evidently, however, they don't teach young gnomes how to swim. He slips under the water. As he goes, he gurgles out a spell. Suddenly loud concussive pops begin randomly. Ghost Sound can create 4 humans 'worth' of sound per caster level. Bizzle wants 4 'bangs', each as loud as 4 humans could make yelling randomly in the water. He's hoping to scare away the crocs. And if we're doing this 1st edition style, I'll note that sound in water will produce a concussive effect that you would feel.

The gnome is flung around as a morsel in the crocodile's sharp teeth. He screams as blood runs down his side. "Ahhhh! Heeeelp!" He shuts his eyes and instinctively tries to force some magic to help. Attempt Spell-Like ability to cast Speak with Animals
I think that's a fail, yes?

Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 "Aaaaiiiieeee! Bizzlemont screams as the canoe is lifted into the air and the sounds of snapping teeth erupt. The gnome clutches his familiar and dives into the bottom of the boat.

"That would be a simple start, Strang. I might be able to do even better. But we need to figure out our goal here. Do we want to drive them away, kill them, or capture them to lean more?"

Bizzlemont examines the totem pole. "Some work with chisels can put this on the right track. Perhaps a fluidic die cut and a retention half blade too. Ah, and we could shave the wood out to make a hollow for the top!" He adjusts his glasses and merely nods. You have no idea what kind of tools the gnome is talking about. -Posted with Wayfinder

Come on Xanthar, you know some of these old modules had little reasoning behind the appearance of enemies and the traps and stuff presented. Sometimes you ran into something completely overpowering. Besides, TPKs are what silly stories are made of.

They make a better Sorceror in Pathfinder with their inherent bonus to CHA. A fey-bloodline gnome sorceror is quite capable. However, since we're going old school with this game, a Gnomish Illusionist simply had to be a wizard. Also, a mechanics question: How do you use a Pearl of Power? Is it a 1-step process, where you use the pearl to recall a spell and then cast it? Or is it a 2-step process where you have to use the pearl, get the spell back, then you can walk around like you always had it memorized. Then later you cast it? I've always assumed the former until I played with someone who did the latter.

Whew, you had me frantically searching my sheet, Xanthar. The answer is gnomes get +1 to illusion DCs in their Gnome Magic special ability. So 10+4(Int)+1(Gnome)+1(Spell Focus)+spell = 16+spell level for illusion spells. Everything else is 14+spell level And with your Will saves, Bizzlemont will confidently include you in any friendly fire he needs in the future!

Damn, you're right. This is why I don't play spellcasters often. (Or perhaps this confusion is caused by me not playing them often.) Spells like this center on a grid intersection. New Plan. Spell center will be the lower left corner of AY-6 (Xanthar's square). That will hit the King, Xanthar, Wolf in AZ-6 and Wolf in AY-7. I highlighted them in purple. Sorry Xanthar, but it's the best choice and you have a higher Will save than Terion. DC 16 Will save.

Cast Defensively, DC 19: 1d20 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 3 = 21 Bizzlemont presses himself up against the rock wall and flings his hand out. Immediately, golden sand falls from the air, outlining the king and one of his wolves and getting into their eyes just as they recover from the effects of his previous spell. Cast Glitterdust (10 foot radius), centered on AY-3. DC16 Will save or be blinded. Hits the King and the wolf in AZ-4.

So we're all clear: A stunned creature drops everything held, can't take actions, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). Attackers receive a +4 bonus on attack rolls to perform combat maneuvers against a stunned opponent. And no hard feelings Xanthar. This is fun!

Bizzlemont rushes up near the mountainside and ducks down as he unleashes a torrent of colors at the wolves and the man. "Fear the gnome!" Cast Defensively (DC16): 1d20 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 3 = 26 Will save DC 17 or be stunned for 1 round (assuming the king and the wolves have more than 5HD). The spell will cover the king and the top 2 wolves.

Awesome. Good on ya, Xanthar! Bizzlemont cringes at the dwarf's cursing, but he agrees with the man. "What you propose is simple extortion. We may not have to come to blows, but your deal is unacceptable."

Yeah, it doesn't protect against Cold Damage (like from a Winter Wolf), but it sure does make trekking through an ice cave easier. Technically, you could visit the North Pole in your swim wear with that spell.

"Yes, they breathe extreme cold. We're not talking about the kind that you can hide behind a think coat either." He thinks for a bit. "Yes, there's a spell that can protect us from a certain amount of it. It's relatively short term, but it could be a real difference. Let me see what I can find around town. Or maybe Morlean can help us. Fortinado, might be able to protect us with the same spell too." The gnome stands and introduces himself to the newcomer. "Bizzlemont Blacktop, of the Moorwenth Blacktops. Good to meet you Xanthar." Later Bizzlemont goes in search of some Resist Energy scrolls. He asks Morlean if he knows the spell too.

The gnome takes the dwarf's peace offering and looks at it skeptically. Some sort of moonshine, probably. Still, he downs a gulp and come up coughing. He adjusts his glasses and nods his head at the dwarf. "Much obliged, sir. Welcome to our little band of troublemakers."

Bizzlemont looks up incredulously at the uncouth dwarf who has taken his last piece of bread. And the heel too! A crusty piece of heel was a small pleasure! "Well, Hammerhead, I hope you're ten time as good with that axe as you are with your brains." He takes his spectacles and wipes them. "As for cursed armor, perhaps we wizards simply enjoy making you muscle-bound types actually think about where you want a new piece of shiny armor or not. Nothing I would make, of course, but then I try to hold back from cavorting with demons! Instead, I have this lot." He looks over the group, realizing he was the only master of the arcane here. "Welcome to the group, I suppose."

Knowledge, Nature, take 10: 10 + 9 = 19
Durges, Fantasies, and Winter wolves have to fall into one of those categories, right? Bizzle scrunches up his face, trying to think if he's ever heard of those creatures before.

Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 Bizzlemont is snoring loudly before long and the slam on the table startles the little gnome. "Wha-! What was that-" He cuts off as the older Wizard glares at him. "I was just meditating," he says matter-of-factly. As the others take their supplies, Bizzlemont grabs a pair of boots. "Well, find some cursed armor from the ancient halls of an Ice Titan. Sure, piece of cake." He follows the others to the inn.

Bizzlemont steps up and signs his name. Those coming after him note the wizard seems to have written out his full gnomish name. Bizzlemont Brometheus Brighton Bequethom Bantish of the clan Blacktop. Closer inspection shows a small rodent's paw print as well. With a crude 'R' written beside it.

"Morlean, this is quite an impressive tower you have here. I imagine you have spent year studying various items and arts. If we do this, would you be willing to share some of your arcane knowledge with me? I find a trade of such things to be good for the spread of our art."

"She's relieving us of our enemies. Surrender or not, goblins are not to be trusted!" Bizzlemont glares at the goblins around him who caused the bloody wound on his arm. "I grant, you it's not very heroic, but give them a chance and they'll jump us again."

Suddenly, he blinks and his whole body shudders with the force of will, as if that simple act took his entire being. Slowly the gnome begins to move again. Full-Round action

Bizzlemont finishes his spell and Terion begins to grow. The gnome suddenly realizes the threat of the goblins around him and he casts another spell.
