"Not to worry Vacian, you're alright with me." Merro wags his finger at the rest of the group, "Don't let these types soften you up, heh."

"You know my terms." Merro swings the axe back over his shoulders, and looks over to the river. "Your boat yeah? Bring it in, stay the night. Maybe you'll grow a pair of balls between you in the morning, or maybe you s%&! yourselves and leave." He shrugs and waits a moment before heading back to the riverbank.

Cute.

Merro's eyebrows twitch, "Too important to listen, eh? These lands are mine...already. Strength proves strength! Not titles, not smartly dressed soft-folk."

The question is, does Merro consider Vacia a part of the Shudderwood as he understands it? As long as Vacia keeps up its end of things, it's not the Shudderwood.

Jhon looks even more confused than before. Merro seems intrigued, "A fancy title will save me a lot of trouble eh?" Merro licks his teeth, swaying idly on his axe as he considers the implications. "Send this Count to me then, if he can best me, we'll truck with you lot. You lose, you join the pack or die."

Merro is a lot of fun to write for.

Merro slams the axe-head into the dirt, leaning forward on the haft toward Ky and thumbs at Ivan, "I like this one. What do you propose then, eh? Of course, keep in mind that it's bad manners to tell me my business." His sharp grin punctuates the sentiment.

Reasoning with someone truthfully, more or less, is usually a diplomacy check.

The large man is about to respond, negatively, to Ky's statement, but stops at mention of the Worldwound. He visibly pales, but it doesn't reach his stern gaze. "We've seen what demons and their ilk can do! We sent the demon-wolf pack back to the Abyss!" He raises his axe up in the air and the assembled pack cheers and howls. His wolfish grin recedes with the noise and he turns to Edward, "We took this forest from you soft-folk too, and we'll keep it...but of the northern forest-you speak the truth." He looks over the lot of you, then proclaims to all assembled: "The forest is mine! I am Merro of the Vollensag! The packs of the Shudderwood follow me!"

Ky:
If anything, they're off balance. It could get ugly, but right now the situation is non-threatening.

Jhon raises his eyebrow at Ky, then looks off to the right quickly. After a moment, a large, wild-looking man emerges from the foliage, casually swinging his two-handed poleaxe onto his should. He rests both hands on the haft, and saunters toward the group. Six other woodsmen cautiously follow him, hands resting on their sheathed weapons.

"Eh," growls the large man, "Empire? Varisian empire. Puh. Too many dour folk around here already-taste like s%%+." His folk chuckle. "I don't lick nobody's boot-heel either, Meat."

Thanks for the support. Thankfully my wife is doing much better, though she has forgotten a few recent events.

As far as the pregame roleplaying goes, use your best judgement, tell a good story. Don't worry about how it might effect the campaign, unless you plan to fall on your sword, don't do that.

Ky, still good

Jhon can't help but chuckle, "Restore Ascanor? Why would you? It's a dangerous place this."

Heh. I'm in the Salt Lake City area. Things are pretty tight right now, but we should be on our feet again in the next couple of months.

Looks like my life is full of bad news. Until the 15th, I'm going to be busy moving the wife and myself back to the parents...our current housemates have become rather emotive in their desire for us to leave. They've never had to live with anyone else before, so I understand to a point. The stifling atmosphere is really hampering my creative juices anyway. So, until the 15th, I'm going to be in short supply, but I'll try to keep things moving.

The man speaks in Common.

The man looks to Aldous, "What's left of it. Call me Jhon. What brings you to Ascanor? The hunting perhaps?"

No roll required, it's given that they can understand local languages, since folklore, everywhere, states they like to blend in with their prey to better murder them. Any overtures to the wolfmen should come with a Diplomacy roll (or the like).

Bad news, I need to postpone another two weeks because our current housemates (who own the house) would very much like us to move out, so that's what we'll be doing. I'm sorry for the continued delay. If you like, you can start role playing the festival in the gameplay thread.

As the group walks the 300 ft span from the gate to the beach, the barking and snarling cease and the area grows quiet.

Perception Check DC 20:
People...or wolves...watch the group from the dense foliage and scattered ruins around you.

A lightly build man in ill-kept furs approaches from behind one of the larger ruins, a smirk across his face as he holds out his hands to show he's unarmed. "You lost?"

Grease appears just before the doorway as Jacob's skeletal minions assume their positions. Neither Rick's nor Chester's shots find their mark, though the wolves are still blinded, incapacitating them. However, three great wolfmen race from the river bank, stopping briefly to inspect their lesser kin; they snarl at the group. The biggest barks something unintelligible and they ready for the attack.

Round three!

Sorry for the delay, my wife received a concussion and I've been looking after her, I'll get check your characters soon.

Sorry about the delay, my wife concussed herself and we've been taking care of her.

Ky:
It appears all of the ruin's inhabitants are on the shore of the river, some 300 ft. through Ascanor's ruins.

When your crunch is finished (including starting gear), let me know so I can look over your characters.

Cat's out of the bag. lol

Correct.

Oops. Missed that. Pathfinder/D&D 3.5 is not my primary system.

So, Linguistics (Ancient Kellid glyphs) 1, Profession Scholar 1, and Local Knowledge 1.

Which then means I have 4 points unspent.

I've been sidelined by that myself in the past. You could pop into the discussion thread and see what we're missing skill-wise, or just pick whatever you fancy. Either way, looking forward to it.

To deal with the double investigator and mesmerist thing, I picked your characters because they met my criteria the best: compelling stories that fit the setting. If we run into something when the AP comes out that you guys can't handle, I'll modify it, because I'm not a fan of TPKOs. I'm excited for everyone to be here, and I'm looking forward to exploring Strange Aeons with you.

After a scant few minutes, the group approaches the main gate of Ascanor. Where the stone of the massive gate isn't scorched, vines cavort about the gate, nothing is left of the great wooden door save the hinges. Through the archway are many more ruined structures, rubble from the walls is strewn about the yard. In the distance you can finally hear the calls and voices of man and beast at the beachhead.

Like I said before, it was a hard choice. Thank you everyone who applied, thank you for your interest, enthusiasm, and time.

Here's the five-man(ish) band:

Amaria Desnusianu
Francis Garnell Warwick
Jhanek Osyck
Malachi Constant
Samuel Hutchinson

Start getting your crunch in order, no hurry, and we can start talking about the game's finer points and such in the discussion thread.

Unless there are any dissenters, I will move the group to the gates of Ascanor.

Where did you get the idea that you could have more ranks than your current level?

No problem, welcome back.

2 people marked this as a favorite.
Samuel Hutchinson wrote:
Three is difficult in my experience. if 5 is unmanageable then go with four.

That sentiment would work with any traditional GM, but I'm of a mind to tell a good story, and if the crunch doesn't like it, the crunch can stuff itself.

Stop worrying Sam, you made the top three.

I've got it down to five. I might stay at five, but I don't feel like juggling a lot of people for this game, so it might go down to three. Many of you put forward some great concepts, and it's tearing me up a little bit to make the cuts.

Looks like my short list is still three characters too long. I'll still accept finalized entries for another 2.5 hours, but the competition is fierce.

EDIT:

So, what about the Consolidated Skills option in Unchained? Will we be using that system as well?

Nope.

Thanks YoricksRequiem, tomorrow is going to be a busy day.

Edward:
Mage armor is still active.

Thanks for letting us know, good luck with everything.

Kiara's spell sends the wolves crashing into themselves as they're blinded by the swirling dust. This makes for an easy shot, so Aldric's precision finds an arrow in one of the mongrels' shoulders. Yazmine slips into the ruin herself, hiding behind a pile of debris.

The moment would be quite triumphant, if not for the chorus of unearthly howling from the riverside.

Everyone made it inside of the ruin, if they wished it. The wolves are about 60 feet out. Please submit your turn the second.

Brilliant. Exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.

I run a Cthulhu game here on the boards we are early in the process but I know the module is one of the better ones written by Chaosium! Looking forward to seeing how the characters deal with the revelations they will face. I have mostly played and not run the game so it is an interesting experience for me as well.

Good luck to you!

"We'll be just north of Ascanor soon, get yourselves ready."

Arter pilots the boat down the river a ways, until the trees on the bank leave room enough for a landing. One of the crew ties off against a large oak leaning over the water and the captain turns the rudder against the current.

"Alright then! We'll stay here a tick, then ride down, hopefully the wilders won't know how to swim."

Enough time has passed I think. I'll get the next round of combat going tomorrow.

Yeh, I know... I had the idea, but this time the words weren't flowing as well as other times. And trust me, I'd really love to play this game because of its theme.

I'll try to be a better player than writer if chosen *winks*

Good thing this isn't a job interview. Heh.

Checking in.

Should we be whipping up Crunch for our submissions? I saw that a couple people had aliases made but didn't see any direction from the GM about that. Thought I might have missed a post.

If you feel like it.

As a Lovecraft fan this one I think will be a blast to play in!

Me too, I used to run local games of Call of Cthulhu. The players had a bad habit of getting themselves killed, like the time they were interrogated by Dagon cultists... If the cult leader asks you if you're going to the authorities, you say: "No Sir, didn't you mention a vacant position in your organization?"

Ivan, what exactly was that Knowledge check for?

And I think I have the backstory finished. The crunch part will come later (give me another 30 minutes or so).

Francis is a half-elf, just for the record.

** spoiler omitted **...

It's a little on the nose, but I like it.

I'm giving Yazmine some more time. If I don't hear back from her soon, we'll continue forward without her.

Arter gives Aldous a long-suffering glare. "Like I said, anything faster than the keelboat will overtake it, and probably end us all, your stagecoach counted amongst that."

Undead Scourge is a Paladin Archtype, removed it from the Profile for submission. For now I will stand pat with the Background as is.

I should have looked it up, I thought it sounded off. Thanks for the update.
