Ashlana returns Adrian's nod with a quick grin, then takes a few steps closer towards the remaining goblins, trying to get them in her sights. Catching the eyes of the one outside, she places her hands on her deck and glares, sending a wave of misfortune.

Move 10 ft and cast Misfortune hex at green goblin. Misfortune- Will save dc 13, causes target to roll twice for ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check and take the worse result.

Ashlana grimaces at the sight of Adrian's leg and nods fervently. "Stay still." She takes a step behind him and reaches out, laying her hands on the monk as she frantically speaks words of healing.

With one goblin left and hearing Aiko's worried shouts echoing from the other side, Ashlana takes off as quick as she can back outside towards the others, still trying to maintain a safe distance from their attackers.

Ashlana's eyes widen when Adrian alerts them of even more goblins waiting nearby. She hurries towards Beastbrother, and lays a hand on him, speaking her incantation quickly and imbuing him with Guidance.

Ashlana focuses her attention on the remaining goblin in their vicinity, quickly mumbling the same words before followed up with a sudden, mad laugh.

Move: Cackle hex to extend Misfortune for additional round.

Ashlana takes a small step forward, never taking her eyes away from the hexed goblin. She lets out a mad laugh, so dissimilar to her normal demeanor, then places a hand on Adrian in front of her. Ashlana speaks quickly as she imbues Adrian with Guidance.

Cackle:
A witch can cackle madly as a move action. Any creature that is within 30 feet that is under the effects of an agony hex, charm hex, evil eye hex, fortune hex, or misfortune hex caused by the witch has the duration of that hex extended by 1 round.

Ashlana moves swiftly through the room towards the others. Stopping just inside the next the room, her eyes lock onto one of the goblins surrounding Beastbrother.

Hand feeling for her cards for comfort in another tense situation, she mutters a curse under her breath as she stares daggers at the attacking goblin.

Move: 30 ft. Standard: Targeting green goblin with Misfortune Hex, Will save dc 13.

Misfortune:
The witch can cause a creature within 30 feet to suffer grave misfortune for 1 round. Anytime the creature makes an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, it must roll twice and take the worse result. A Will save negates this hex. This hex affects all rolls the target must make while it lasts. Whether or not the save is successful, a creature cannot be the target of this hex again for 1 day.

Ashlana shakes her head. Unfortunately not," she whispers quietly. "Walthus. Skeletons, pigs, burned bodies... Does any of this make sense to you?"

Out loud, she calls out as the footsteps move away, "If you promise to leave our caravans alone, we will help destroy whatever has attacked you and avenge your fallen friends!"

Ashlana hurries to follow behind them, still casting Detect Magic under her breath as they go further in.

Ashlana feels the hair on the back of her neck stand up as the eeriness of their surroundings settle in. She hurries to follow the others into the hut.

"Agreed. There's something... Unsettling about all of this." As she follows, Ashlana casts Detect Magic.

"Oh! Those are goblins," Ashlana says suddenly, loud at first before quickly bringing her voice down to a whisper. "They've all been burned."

Ashlana returns Zaraleva's small smile with one of her own, subconsciously placing her hands on the precious harrow deck on her person.

At the goblin village, Ashlana watches Caine examine the gate before her own gaze shoots over to the algae filled pool. "Maybe our job's been done for us," she suggests. "It doesn't seem as if they had any lookouts posted, at least. They can't be that unintelligent, can they?"

Ashlana considers Walthus' tale of the Soggy River Monster. "Once we have dealt with the Licktoads, it may be worth checking out," she muses.

"Goblins, shapechangers, aberrations... The swamp is far more dangerous than I realized!" There is a sharp glimmer in her eyes as she says this.

Ashlana stifles a laugh at Beastbrother, not wanting to wake the desperately in need of rest Walthus.

The next day, she listens with rapt attention to the halfling's story. "Thank you, Walthus. It was very kind of you to offer us your roof and your food. I'm glad you are doing much better this morning.

We came here trying to find the source of goblin attacks. Do you know anything about their village off of Old Fish Trail? The imposter may have been trying to mislead us...." Ashlana trails off uncertainly, glancing towards the door the party had dragged the body out the night before.

Ashlana hurries inside the house as the creature falls, reacting with surprised relief at the appearance of the real Walthus as she stands halfway up the stairs, not wanting to crowd the poor halfling.

"Thank the gods we got here in time," she says. "No, no, you do not have to-" She tries to interject before the halfling falls unconscious.

Ashlana heads back down the stairs, looking for something of Walthus' to put together for him to eat once he wakes back up.

Cursing herself for her failed hex, Ashlana reaches out to lay a hand on Beastbrother.

"Ancestors guide your strike," she whispers quickly, half to him and half directed inward.

Casting Guidance on Beastbrother. +1 competence bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check.

Ashlana stands and stares in awe, wide eyed at Beastbrother's sudden feat of strength, before shaking her head with a sharp exhale as she brings herself back to the situation at hand.

She watches the horrid creature closely and, feeling for the deck in her pockets, whispers in a low voice, never taking her eyes off of the monster. Then without warning, she bursts into a sudden, hideous laugh unlike any sound she's made on the journey so far.

Ashlana follows behind Zaraleva and Caine, not wanting to stay outside in the fast approaching dark and the fog.

"Oh, yes!" she chimes in. "If we're going to go after the goblins that um, that did this to you, it would be much safer in the daylight."

There's definitely a weird player/character separation of knowledge here. Ashlana definitely wouldn't feel comfortable confronting him on a hunch and an indeterminate magical aura (oof that 3).

Her perception is nothing but she could team up with someone for first watch and keep Detect Magic going to see if the aura in his house moves if the party wants to keep an eye on him still.

Ashlana frowns. "Why would he lie?" she repeats. "No reason to lie unless he's hiding something from us. He did seem awfully eager to get rid of us, too."

Ashlana moves a little closer to Walthus' house and casts Detect Magic in its direction, looking for any unexpected auras coming from within.

Ashlana watches Zaraleva with interest, having a deep fascination with the magic of others. As Walthus tries to push them on, she asks, "Do you know how much further down the Old Fish Trail they are? It's beginning to get dark."

"We'd be deeply grateful for any help you can offer us," Ashlana speaks up from behind. "And of course I'm sure you appreciate your privacy, we'll be out of your hair before you know it!"

Ashlana nods along with the others in agreement, save Beastbrother.

"We might be heading into a trap," she says hesitantly. "But it sounds like we can either spring it on the trail or spring it in the thickets where we're more likely to stumble over ourselves."

Tight lipped and eyes darting around for swamp monsters, Ashlana digs in her pack and produces a fifty foot coil of rope.

"Here," she offers to assist Caine in attaching the rope properly before making her own way, cautiously, across the bridge.

Ashlana nods in response to Aiko's comment about strays before the actual words hit her, and she gapes in surprise at the entertainer before silently continuing on.

Ashlana watches the marsh around them from the back, stomach feeling uneasy despite the food Beastbrother foraged. She feels for the harrow deck that suddenly became a source of power for her, feeling comfort from its reminder.

"Monitored?" Her voice drops low as she glances back at Caine and Oscar behind her, eyes wide. "Maybe it's just an animal observing from a distance?" she suggests uncertainly.

Ashlana, who had begun counting her coin, hastily pockets it at the arrival of Calvin Rimstone.

"Thank you, friend!" she says gratefully, taking one of the containers for herself.

Listening to Aiko and Adrian's conversation, she interjects, "Ameiko is great, isn't she? She's done so much to help me as well. When my father passed-" Her voice cuts off, realizing she's sharing more about her personal life than was usual for her. Ashlana feels for the harrow deck in her pockets. "Well, she's been a very good friend to me."

Ashlana watches their surroundings with a growing combination of unease and excitement as they find the marker for New Fish Trail. "Not much further until we reach Walthus Proudstump," she muses. "We've been fortunate to only see friendly faces along the way so far."

Ashlana will stay in the back, she is a fragile caster.

I'm also normally active but if it comes up, I think a safe bet will be a combo Misfortune Hex and Cackle Hex on any targets in range and still susceptible.

Misfortune:

Anytime the creature makes an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, it must roll twice and take the worse result. A Will save negates this hex. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. This hex affects all rolls the target must make while it lasts. Whether or not the save is successful, a creature cannot be the target of this hex again for 1 day.

Cackle:
A witch can cackle madly as a move action. Any creature that is within 30 feet that is under the effects of an agony hex, charm hex, evil eye hex, fortune hex, or misfortune hex caused by the witch has the duration of that hex extended by 1 round.

She will also cast Detect Magic regularly as they travel.

Ashlana has changed into clothing more fitting a journey into the swamp, although physical protection leaves much to be desired. A fluid mix of greens and browns completely covering her despite the heat, in an effort to protect from the potential dangers, and a red band tied around her wrist for good luck. And a large, mostly unused mace strapped to her back if she needs to make her own luck.

The fortune teller thanks Father Zantus and the fisherman profusely after they offer their assistance and advice.

"I think we should be as ready as we can be before we go in," she offers slowly. "I have some gold with me, I'm happy to pick up enough repellent for us! That is what the fisherman said we should do, anyway. And if we drop Ameiko's name, they're likely to give us a discount as well!"

Ashlana has 47gp on her and will buy a container of repellent for each member, at least.

The excitement at a chance for a real adventure is clear on Ashlana's face. She hurries over to Ameiko, listening intently to her words.

"Thank you, Ameiko!" she beams. "This is so exciting, isn't it? A real adventure," she adds, half to Ameiko and half to herself. Remembering the Shoanti, she retrieves her harrow deck and sits herself down at a table.

"Before we all prepare, let's see what the ancestors have to say about our journey."

Performance (fortune teller): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

But when the cards she turns over reveal themselves to be The Sickness and The Snakebite, Ashlana's face flushes. "Um- P-perhaps we should just rely on Walthus Proudstump's help," she stammers as her voice trails off uncomfortably.

Ashlana looks surprised for a moment at Beastbrother's request, her expression shifting to embarrassment as she realizes the potential customer may have heard her complaints, before shifting into a quick smile.

"Oh! Yes, I can accept that trade." The gods know she spends enough time in the Rusty Dragon that some days a bought drink was as good to her in the moment as coin.

Before she can say anything else, the Sheriff's voice catches her attention. Her eyes light up as he goes into further detail about the perils of the swamp, the importance of stopping the attacks. As more patrons of the Rusty Dragon begin to offer their services, Ashlana stands up as well.

"Ah- I'd like to come too, if that's alright," she says quickly. "I know some magic, and I can be useful."

Ashlana sits at the bar, a drink nearby, and fiddles with her harrow deck on the hard wood as she speaks. She is a frequent sight at the Rusty Dragon, either offering her services as a fortune teller or talking Ameiko's ear off at the bar. At the moment, she was complaining to her friend about a particularly disgruntled patron she had read the cards for last week.

"And then he refused to pay! Can you believe that? Just because 'The Idiot' was drawn. I tried to explain to him that the cards weren't literal..." She sighs, and shakes her head. "I bet you don't have any problems getting customers to play up, Ameiko," she adds somewhat wistfully. Ameiko had been Ashlana's friend for a long time, but the fortune teller had always been envious of Ameiko's confidence.

Seeing Aiko and Zaraleva approach Ameiko, Ashlana gives a small, hesistant wave and a smile and turns her attention back to her drink, pocketing her cards away safely. She was certainly familiar with Aiko at least, but she always grows a little nervous around people she doesn't know as well.

Sorry about that! I thought I had revised everything but I missed that one. Bumped her wisdom up to 10 and Intelligence down to 15 to make the stats more balanced and hopefully prevent any of them from being a dump stat.

Ashlana's alignment is neutral good, and I've added that to her profile as well.


I have here Ashalana Moran, a human witch specializing in Cartomancy (that may be haunted by her dad?) and best friends with Ameiko!


This is Twilik's submission. Ashlana Moran, a human cartomancer witch who is best friends with Ameiko but has started to develop an interest in Shalelu.

Ashlana was built for the recent recruitment for this Adventure Path. Thankfully she fit the qualifications still for this one, all I had to was adjust her remaining gold for the new roll!


Ashlana is complete! Build and backstory are in her profile, character advancement plot is below.

Advancement Plot:
3rd: Extra Hex feat to take Cauldron Hex, granting Brew Potion feat and +4 to Craft Alchemy.

4th: Take Evil Eye Hex

5th: Extra Hex feat to take Fortune Hex.

After that, take Accursed Hex, Amplified Hex, and Split Hex at 7, 9, and 11 respectively.
