Jade Regent - The Brinewall Legacy
Prolog

The sounds of their boots on the hard stone floor reverberated through the halls of the Sandpoint Garrison. Marek and Tolvar were returning from their nightly rounds and were looking forward to returning to their homes.

A loud voice came from behind them "Where is he? I need to speak with him right away!"

Marek turned to see Calvin Rimstone marching quickly in his direction "What is it this time Calvin?"

Calvin did not attempt to hide the exasperation in his voice "Another of my caravans was attacked yesterday. My drivers can't control their horses with all those fireworks going off. Something has to be done!"

"Fine, we didn't see the sheriff go home during our shift so it is likely he is still here doing paperwork." replied Marek.

Tolvar added "Ha! He is probably asleep. I sure wouldn't want to be the one to wake him. He is going to be in a foul mood. You better watch yourself."

Pushing his way past the two guards Calvin proceeded down to the end of the hall and knocked on the door of Sheriff Belor Hemlock's office.

A loud snoring came from behind the door which was interrupted with an angry growl "Go away and let me sleep!" came a voice from inside the office that was surely a suddenly awakened constable.

Marek hastily opens the door and before he quickly heads back down the hall, he warns "Calm down, we don't want any trouble. My shift is over and I don't want to have to make out a report on another incident."

Calvin bursts into the office totally ignoring Marek's advice "Sheriff, I need to speak with you immediately. These attacks must stop! We need to speak with the mayor. I'm losing money to these goblins and if we don't do something quickly, the officials at Magnimar will notice. We all know what that means and none of it good."

Looking out the window and seeing a rising sun peek through the trees, Belor responds "Oh, its morning already. I don't need this headache. All right, I'll head over to the Town Hall and see if I can get Mayor Kendra to convene a meeting."

Some appeasement appears on Calvin's face as he turns and heads back the way he stormed in. As Belor's head falls into his desk with a smack "Another fine day in Sandstorm." he falls back asleep.

Around noon, the town's deputy Galthanas Silverthorne an elf with arcane skills had organized the meeting that Calvin demanded. The leaders from the town were gathered faster than usual based on the deputy's insistance. "Please everyone, we need to get this meeting started."

The large meeting hall in the Town Hall of Sandpoint was rarely populated during the gatherings of the four noble families: the Kajitsu, Valdemars, Scarnettis and Deverin. Mayor Kendra Deverin was also a lawmaker, judge and general peacekeeper of Sandpoint and this fireworks business gave her a great deal of stress. Today's gathering was unusual as several of the town's business proprietors as well as a great deal of ordinary townsfolk were in attendance. With a bang of her wooden gavel Kendra bellowed so "To order! We must begin. As you all know, recent events have interrupted our normal shipments along the Lost Coast Road. Despite our attempts to quell these distirbances with additional patrols, our merchants are still suffering from attacks by goblins."

Mr Rimstone as head of the merchant's guild that services Sandpoint interjected "Yesterday three travelers were severely injured. The panic from the caravan's team of horses is getting worse than the goblin's attacks. What is this town planning to do about this!"

Mayor Kendra again banged her gavel "Order! Please don't interrupt! It will only prolong this meeting. Sheriff/Deputy do you have a plan that can help us put an end to these attacks?"

Without a good night sleep Sheriff Belor is slow to respond. An opening in the dialog provided Galthanas an opportunity to respond "Yes. The sheriff and I have discussed the matter and we agree that we should restore an old practice known as the 'goblin bounty'. It is crude, but effective. A bounty of 10 gp will be paid for every relatively fresh goblin ear delivered to the town hall. Our reports indicate that the group is known as the Licktoads who are led by a goblin named Chielf Gutwad. Once their leader is killed/captured, this disruptance should cease."

Another loud bang of the gavel is followed by "Very well. We should vote on this proposal, all in favor raise your hand."

All the leaders raised their hands immediately except for Ameiko Kaijitsu the owner and propertier of the Rusty Dragon an inn/tavern located just past the southern bridge overlooking the Turandarok River. These meetings bored her and she never liked having to attend them and did so only to honor her father's wishes. She could have resigned her duties entirely after her father past and no one would have blamed her. Most residents of Sandpoint knew she desired more than her peaceful existance here in Sandpoint. As all eyes in the conference room turned to her (as votes of this type needed to be unamious) Ameiko let our a heavy sign and raised her hand "It looks like we have no other choice."

Later that day Sheriff Hemlock managed to hastily get dozens of flyers made to distribute around the town. As he entered the Rusty Dragon, he noticed that the inn was deeming with customers which did not surprise him at all. Ameiko was the best cook in Sandpoint and people from both the town and travelers came here to partake in her excellent cuisine. "Here is today's flyer to add to your Help Wanted board."

In addition to running the inn, Ameiko hosted a message board to help travelers and townsfolk with requesting/providing needed goods/services. "Thanks sheriff, always a pleasure." Ameiko says with a smile that only the most disciplined could resist. "When your finished stop by for some mussel and vegetable soup. The salmon and coconut rice dish is also very tasty."

Belor grins and turns to leave and whispers to himself "The food in this place is going to make me copperless."

=======================================

Each of you finds your self at the Rusty Dragon on the morning of Fireday, 10 Erastus. Your reasons for being there may vary and it is up to you on the amount of detail you wish to share, but you all have one thing in common - you all share a bond with one of more of this Adventure Path's NPCs.

The rising sun burns off the morning dew as the temperature begins to rise. Today appears to be another scorcher in the summer heat of Varisia. Laughter, music, and light fill the cosy common room of Sandpoint's most renowned inn. Behind the bar, Ameiko Kaijitsu greets each newcomer as a friend with a wave, a wink, or a genial welcome.

Common Room of the Rusty Dragon's lower floor

The solid wooden front doors of The Rusty Dragon stand in the shadow of the large bronze dragon feature fixed on the wood-shingled roof above. Patrons enter through the large common room. There are two medium-sized stone hearths on either side of the room, both with redwood tables by them. (The Rusty Dragon features elaborate masonry chimneys with chimney pots). A well-hewn stone floor leads to a large beautiful woven floor mat/rug which sits at the base of a wide, finely-crafted redwood/wooden staircase ascending to the upper floor sleeping chambers. To the left of the stairs is a large/long L-shaped bar - with stools to sit down on (seating for 9) and by the bar is the large "Help Wanted" noticeboard (a well-known way-point for many townsfolk and travellers). There are over a dozen redwood tables - with a large candle/lantern decoration at their centre. Near the entrance to the common room (to the left) there are short wooden stairs leading to a wooden floor area, featuring a large stage for musicians, actors, speakers and bards of all types to perform for the crowd. There is an outdoor courtyard, behind the bar area and a large kitchen suited for open hearth cooking. Behind the stairs and along the right wall, there are areas for visitors/guests to sleep for the cheap price of 1 copper piece per night. There are tall and narrow glass windows throughout, with small diamond shaped window panes - lead casings holding them together. To stave off the chill, there are numerous exotic and rich tapestry wall hangings. Half-timber work features on both the external and internal walls; the spaces between the frames filled wattle and daub. The inn/tavern screams of warmth and comfort and a wonderful respite from travellers coming in from the open road.

You may begin role play between each other and any NPCs present in The Rusty Dragon. You may have started this game as either strangers, acquaintances or friends. Together your actions will forge a path that will unite the group into a close-knit and capable adventuring team. Take this time to get to know one another, find out whatever information you may want and establish your dynamics with the group and the NPCs. Happy gaming and good luck! Your adventure begins now.

As is usual for her, Hattori Aiko is loitering about in the Rusty Dragon. She is a common sight there; having grown up in the shadow of Ameiko, with their fathers as associates, Aiko often spent time with the wealthy restauranteer in their youth. Now that they are adults, Aiko's situation is a bit more precarious than Ameiko's - Aiko did not have the luxury of a wealthy father and an inheritance of property in the city. Aiko, while an attractive woman, lacks the vivaciousness of her more voluble peer. Thus, most people know her only as a serving woman and occasional performer of acrobatic shows for the amusement of patrons at the Rusty Dragon.

Indeed, at the moment Aiko is still in her performance garb, a tight suit with many bright colors (mostly yellow and red) designed to attract the eye. Having put on a show earlier in the day, she is still wearing the make-up that she uses to make her face stand out during the performance - white facepaint with a thin red vertical line across her lips and heavy eyeshadow. Up close the makeup looks severe, almost comical, as it is like clown make-up - overdone and exaggerated so that her features can be seen by audience members at a distance, and heavily pasted so that it does not come off while she perspires during the acrobatic exertions.

Since her show has just ended, Aiko nods to the patrons inside but does not stop moving as she slips quietly (indeed, completely noiselessly) back toward the kitchen to fetch a bucket of water so that she can clean up and change into her serving garb. That process takes several minutes in the back, at which point she returns to the front room in a simple robe designed to evoke the sensibilities of faraway Minkai, and soft white socks. She putters about the room checking on the patrons to see if anyone requires anything else, then fades back into the background, unobtrusive and unnoticed.

Having completed her rounds, she sidles up to the bar and inclines her head deferentially to Ameiko. While there is definitely an owner-employee relationship between the two women, Aiko is always soft-spoken and especially attentive to Ameiko; among other people she can sometimes be witty, or even sharp-tongued, and assertive, but with Ameiko she always has the pose of a servant. Townsfolk whisper that a few years prior the two women suffered through some kind of trouble and that Aiko's deceased father owed a debt to Ameiko's late father Lonjiku, and that as a result Aiko is always subservient to Ameiko.

Though well accustomed to the Varisian heat, Beastbrother still enjoys the respite provided by the Rusty Dragon. Besides, he'd just spent the last few days breaking a new herd of horses for Daviren Hosk, and he intended to spend his Fireday doing just about nothing.

He took a seat in the common room, enjoying some mead. The drink was a far cry from the cactus wine of the Shoanti, far more palatable yet far less potent. For a Fireday morning, though, it was just right.

Seated crossed-legged on the empty stage, the young duo-cultural Academe student of Varisian/Minkian heritage quietly reads from a large volume. He is dressed in non-descripted garb; flowing garments, loose and earthen toned. His long black hair tied neatly over his shoulder. A well-worn backpack rests at his feet below the stage.
As the crowds come and go, as the drinks are filled and emptied, as the noise waxes and wans; the studious and unremarkable youth continues to study.
Every once in a while, his blue eyes would seemingly, lazily flow about the room; his gaze noticing the comings and goings of any rowdy, rambunctious patrons. But, this is the Rusty Dragon (he glances over at Ameiko and then at Aiko) where only smiles and songs, dancing and laughing, cheering and boasting are the usual specials on it's menu.
Caine smiles. He has a good life here in Sandpoint. A good family that has only treated him as their own; even if he is not. He has jobs. Fixing fences, crafting tools, even had some carvan lessons from his grandmother Koya. Classes were going extremely well at Twilight Academe. This Summer all he had to do was finish his thesis. The problem was that he hasn't been too inspired lately to even start it!
Ah, well, if this is my largest problem; then life is good!

The Magus returns to his studies.

Zaraleva wanders into the Rusty Dragon for a meal, still fiddling with her new scimitar. She was distracted, as usual, but stopped to look around the room. Spotting Aiko, she tries to sneak up on her...

knowing full well that it never works. "Hey Aiko, guess I missed your performance. Anything new on the board?"

It was no surprise that Adrian was a regular at the bar.

Besides the great food from Ameiko, it was the closest thing he had of a reminder of home besides the House of Blue Stones. Indeed, even his mentor Sabyl noticed the number of times he's entered and chided him for neglecting his studies at times.

In this case, he's in a particularly nostalgic mood when he entered the Rusty Dragon before he noticed the flyer on the side. Taking a look, he considered... and failed to clear the floor from the burly man who walked straight into him. He quickly turned around and winced.

"I'm so sorry. I'll be careful next time." The man grunted, but walked away while he shook his head. He thought it would be the end of it... until he noticed that Ameiko watched the entire thing and tried (and failed) to giggle at his expense.

Ah crap. He walked at a fast pace to take a seat himself before taking an order of the usual.

Ashlana sits at the bar, a drink nearby, and fiddles with her harrow deck on the hard wood as she speaks. She is a frequent sight at the Rusty Dragon, either offering her services as a fortune teller or talking Ameiko's ear off at the bar. At the moment, she was complaining to her friend about a particularly disgruntled patron she had read the cards for last week.

"And then he refused to pay! Can you believe that? Just because 'The Idiot' was drawn. I tried to explain to him that the cards weren't literal..." She sighs, and shakes her head. "I bet you don't have any problems getting customers to play up, Ameiko," she adds somewhat wistfully. Ameiko had been Ashlana's friend for a long time, but the fortune teller had always been envious of Ameiko's confidence.

Seeing Aiko and Zaraleva approach Ameiko, Ashlana gives a small, hesistant wave and a smile and turns her attention back to her drink, pocketing her cards away safely. She was certainly familiar with Aiko at least, but she always grows a little nervous around people she doesn't know as well.

Sheriff Hemlock returns to the Rusty Dragon shortly after Aiko's performance. He always enjoyed the entertainment there - almost as much as the food. As he strides up to the bar, a noticable growl from his stomach catches Ameiko's attention.

"Finally finished putting up all those flyers and I'm famished. I'm ready for the soup and salmon you mentioned."

His order was met with her standary reply "Coming right up Sheriff"

As Ameiko heads into the kitchen and Belor notices Aiko next to him at the bar. "How are you doing today Aiko? It looks like I just missed your performance."

Ameiko returns to the bar "Just be a minute Sheriff. You'll have to enjoy the rice as I'm almost out of coconut. Calvin tells me that my shipment was destroyed in that last goblin attack." As she nods to Aiko the acrobat silently heads into the kitchen to retrieve the sheriff's order giving him a grin as she goes.

"Yeah, sorry about that." Belor replied. "Calvin tells me that three travlers were injured in that last attack. I ran into Father Abstalar over at the Cathedral dropping off the flyers today and he told me that they are doing well. He managed to calm them down and agree to a voucher for another trip rather than get a refund."

Ameiko sighs "Well thats good to hear. Sounds like Calvin will be making another donation to the Cathedral this month. A few of my customers have noticed your flyer. You might want to consider taking a more outgoing approach."

Aiko returns with the sheriff's order and as she places it down in front of him he flinches "Please Aiko, can't you try and make some noise before you set down my food. You seem to enjoy startling me."

Aiko giggles and wanders off to check on the other patrons.

When he finishes his meal, Belor decides to follow Ameiko's advice. He taps on the bar and clears his throat.

"Good day. I suppose you've heard of the latest attack. The Licktoads have become dangerously brave and their firework attacks have grown bolder. The town leaders have put out the call for goblin exterminators. Since this has become a serious goblin threat, I've revived Sandpoint's goblin bounty, pointing to the parchment he pinned to the notice board. The town'll pay ten gold pieces for every somewhat fresh goblin ear delivered to the Town Hall and an additional three hundred gold pieces for the group who can bring in the head of of the Licktoad's leader, Chief Gutwad. You interested?"

Beastbrother drains the last of his mead and wanders over to the bar. Just as he’s about to ask about another drink, he notices the woman with the Harrow deck. The young man’s voice is deep and heavy with the clipped accent of the Shoanti, ”You read the Harrow, yes? It has been some time since they have found my fate. An offer, then. I’ll buy you a drink, and in return you see what the spirits have in store for me?”

He’s cut off by the sheriff. Beastbrother ponders for a moment. Even if it didn’t lead to anything greater, Daviren would certainly get him some better jobs for dealing with goblins. He nods to Balor, ”I will take that offer. Where have they been last spotted?”

Caine raises his blue eyes from his book to look at the Sheriff. The youth did hear of these goblins attacks, but he figured (along we most folk) that they were mostly harmless. The Magus is beginning to change his opinion on the matter.
Could me one of grandmother's caravans next!

Caine hops down from the stage. He picks up his pack, stores his book inside, and approaches the Sheriff.
Sir, as a citizen of Sandpointe; I would honor my parents in this endeavor!

He winks at Aiko.
Besides, I need inspiration for my Thesis.

Aiko replies to Zaravela, "Don't worry, my show hasn't changed much yet. I am waiting for the next caravan to come through to see if I can glean some kind of story or tip about a new technique that someone might have seen."

"As to the board... the sheriff has just put up new postings, you can see that there has been another incident with goblins." She gestures with one hand toward the task board.

"A moment, I will return once I have taken care of some costumers."

The serving woman vanishes into the kitchen to put in the various requests and bring out platters or beverages for the customers whose fare is ready. Moving from table to table with quiet speed, she somehow balances multiple mugs and a pair of platters and avoids spilling anything. As she brings the sheriff his breakfast she quips, "Alas, the hope was that you would never know that I was there. If you wish, though, I could wear a bell around my neck." She bows quickly to Sheriff Belor before moving on to the next table, finally stopping near Zaraleva once more. She gazes impassively at Caine, clearly having seen his wink and also clearly still considering exactly how she plans to respond to it, if at all.

Wayfinders

Upon hearing the response from the large Shoanti, Belor replies

"Say, I recognize you. You're a guard on one of Sandru's caravans. Sandru is a lot more cautious with his routes, not as much trouble as Calvin's. Looking for more action, eh? Well, good! So, what we know from Calvin's last report is that most of his caravans have been hit along the Lost Coast Road. Our patrols haven't found anything but they won't go into the Brinestump Marsh. That's were we think those goblins are - someplace they know our patrols won't search. The Brinestump may not be as large as the Mushfens, but that swamp is mighty dense and tangled. It wouldn't take much for someone to get lost in that place."

The sheriff pauses and finishes what is left of his drink.

"Nobody's ever drawn a detailed map of the marsh because there's nothing worth going in for - except for maybe a fishermen and some kind of herbalist. But there is someone who does know his way around the marsh - an eccentric old Halfling named Walthus Proudstump. He considers himself the "warden" of the swamp. I guess his advice would probably be most reliable. You can find his shack at the end of the New Fish Trail. Heed this warning, never venture far from this trail as it winds through the northern portion of the fen. Nothing good there that's for sure."

Ameiko grabs the sheriff's empty mug and before she goes to refill it, she decides to include her own bits of knowledge on the subject

"I've heard a group went out three days ago looking for the Licktoads - even before the bounty was imposed. They must have wanted to get a head start on that gold. But no one has heard anything from them since than they entered that marsh. There are deadly things in that swamp, so you should be careful. If you do decide to go, you should make a plan and take precautions."

When Caine speaks up, she adds

"You might be able to find some others here that might want to join you." she points at the magus "I don't know this Walthus fellow, but you can learn more about the Brinestump from the fishermen down by the wharf. They bring me shrimp and catfish from the Sog's Bay. If they give you any trouble, tell them Ameiko sent you."

As he was quietly enjoying his fried rice, his head popped up to see the sheriff announce a need for some recruits.

The mayor is in on it too? The goblin issue must really be that bad, he thought.

If there was no one else doing so... and he stood up and walked over towards the group.

"I can help out, he suggested. I haven't been to the marsh before, but you know I'm good with my feet most of the time."

Ashlana looks surprised for a moment at Beastbrother's request, her expression shifting to embarrassment as she realizes the potential customer may have heard her complaints, before shifting into a quick smile.

"Oh! Yes, I can accept that trade." The gods know she spends enough time in the Rusty Dragon that some days a bought drink was as good to her in the moment as coin.

Before she can say anything else, the Sheriff's voice catches her attention. Her eyes light up as he goes into further detail about the perils of the swamp, the importance of stopping the attacks. As more patrons of the Rusty Dragon begin to offer their services, Ashlana stands up as well.

"Ah- I'd like to come too, if that's alright," she says quickly. "I know some magic, and I can be useful."

Not too surprised by the influx of local volunteers; Caine knows too well the pride folk take in their beloved Sandpointe.
The Magus takes out a notebook and he begins taking copious notes.

Caine looks around at the newly formed Sandpointe militia.
If we leave within the hour; perhaps, we may arrive to the Warden of the Stump prior to dusk.

He gathers a few plates, mugs and a rolling pin.

When the Sandpoint chapel burnt to the ground in 4702 AR, killing the town's priest, Ezakien Tobyn, his position in the town was filled by his top acolyte, Abstalar Zantus. Though Father Zantus is himself a cleric of Desna, his role as high-priest requires him to be open to other faiths, and he is more than willing and open to assist followers of other gods with spiritual matters.

You can visit the Sandpoint Catherdral at any time and speak with Father Zantus. Getting a discount will require some diplomacy - and probably some checks (I give bonuses for excellent role play)

Amekio responds to the banter between Aiko and Zaraleva

"You can be spared Aiko and know that you will always have a place here. I wish I were going with you."

To the whole group she adds

"Get what you need to be safe. Tell the shops around town that they would be doing me a favor. You'll have a much better chance at getting a discount"

She smiles with that last statement

"Don't forget to check the wharf. The fishermen there may also be able to help."

Zaraleva please post your interactions with Father Zantus and a diplomacy roll. I will let you know what you can acquire a dose of antitoxin for. Anyone who wants to talk with the fishermen and/or any other shop in town to acquire anything else you might want please do the same. Sandpoint is not a major city like Magnimar but it still has a significant amount of supplies you can acquire before you start your trip into the marsh.

The quick response from so many of Ameikio's patrons puts a smile on Belor's face.

"Well that's great! I really appreciate the enthusiasm everyone has. Good luck to you all. The town of Sandpoint is better off because of you."

"Perhaps thanks should wait until we finish the job," says Aiko as she flips her empty serving tray into the air, spinning, then spins around and snatches it behind her back before flipping it between her fingers and bringing it back around in front of her.

"By your leave, then, I will fetch a change of garments and see about this business, Ameiko-sama," she says to the patroness of the Rusty Dragon. "Give me a few minutes to change, Zaraleva, and then we can all head to the docks to see what the fishermen might tell us about the swamps."

The excitement at a chance for a real adventure is clear on Ashlana's face. She hurries over to Ameiko, listening intently to her words.

"Thank you, Ameiko!" she beams. "This is so exciting, isn't it? A real adventure," she adds, half to Ameiko and half to herself. Remembering the Shoanti, she retrieves her harrow deck and sits herself down at a table.

"Before we all prepare, let's see what the ancestors have to say about our journey."

Performance (fortune teller): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

But when the cards she turns over reveal themselves to be The Sickness and The Snakebite, Ashlana's face flushes. "Um- P-perhaps we should just rely on Walthus Proudstump's help," she stammers as her voice trails off uncomfortably.

"The elders always told us that even the darkest of times might contain some light. The bite of a snake has been known to cure some sicknesses, after all." He's quiet for a moment before saying, "Let us not delay. Tracking in the swamps is never easy, and the more time we give them the harder it will become."

Current time in game: 2:00 pm.

Having finished his lunch, Belor leaves the Rusty Dragon in what appears to be a very good mood. You can hear him start whistling as he heads down the street.

Ameiko smiles "I think it is more than the food today that has put a bounce in the sheriff's step."

As Aiko returns from changing, Ameiko adds "I suggest you get going if you want to get started today. The sun sets in about 7 hours and the marsh is over 5 miles from here."

As a group you set out from the Rusty Dragon first stopping by the Sandpoint Cathedral to speak with Father Zantus.

"Welcome to the Sandpoint Cathedral friends. Word around town has it that you are planning on partaking in the goblin bounty. One of the patrons from the Rusty Dragon just stopped by and told me that you might need some antitoxin. Is that correct?"

Zaraleva confirms this and when she starts the negotiation for a discounted price, Aiko chimes in with Caine's assistance.

Negotiation:

Aiko is especially charming in her discussion, Zaraleva shares her knowledge of faiths and Caine explains the intricate details of wood carving.

All of these conversations result in the following: Aiko gets a +2 bonus from Caine's wood carving conversation and a +2 bonus from Zaraleva's discussion of religions.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 + 2 = 18

"Well, we recently received quite a large donation from the Rimstone Transport business and I am in a good mood. I have two doses of antitoxin and a slightly used wand of cure light wounds. Normally, I would charge 100gp for the antitoxin and 600gp for the wand. But since Aiko has asked so nicely, I will let them all go for 350gp instead. In fact, since I am confident in your abilities, I will let you have it on credit. You can repay the church once you have collected your bounty."

The wand has 42 charges.

After numerous replies of gratitude and thanks, the party heads to the wharf.

For the journey, Aiko has changed outfits from her server's garb to something others (except Ameiko) haven't seen before: split-toed soft leather boots and a hauberk of lacquered leather laced together, a over darkly-colored pragmatic crossover top, skirt, and stockings. She is arrayed with a variety of weapons - a short blade as well as a jointed stick that looks like some kind of threshing flail(?). She also has a wicker pack that's made of tightly-woven reeds treated with some kind of alchemical sealant. A straw hat rounds out the ensemble. A far cry from her retiring demeanor as a serving girl and entertainer!

Having had some success with the cathedral in the early afternoon, Aiko says, "We could just ask folks at random, but that could take hours and we're already more than halfway through the day. Let's just find the grottiest swamp-fisher we can spot and ask him about this Walthus Proudstump and any other hazards we should know about."

Taking her own advice, she looks for any swampy fishermen who've come back early, perhaps someone sitting at the edge of the wharf, and then strikes up an easy conversation.

"Good afternoon, my good fellow - a few of us need to go into the swamp to the south, and I was wondering if I might ask a few questions," she cold opens. "We just need to find a local resident there, one Walthus Proudstump, and were wondering if you could tell us anything helpful about navigating the swamp or hazards to be wary of."

Alan peers into the cards with a confused look on his face. "Okay, that picture doesn't look good, but could it be good in an ironic way? he winced.

---------------------------------------------------

After a nice meet and greet with the head of the cathedral, Adrian followed the group over to the wharf, where he made sure to watch the edge of the water. When Aiko made her way to a sailor, he raised his index finger.

"We're working under Ameiko and I'm sure she'd appreciate it if you could help us find him."

Wayfinders

Untangling fishing nets and cleaning boats, the party crosses paths with a grizzled, seasoned fisherman. Aiko begins making inquiries into Brinestump Marsh and Walter Proudstump.

The fisherman responds, "Your first time to Brinestump, eh? It's well-passed tangled and overgrown, infested with all kinds of critters. Careful where you step and how much you carry with ya. My advice's not to wander off - stick to the New Fish Trail and ye can't go wrong. Err, spottin' details inside the marsh can be tricky as the trees grow real tall and thick-like. And the fog's fullest at dawn and dusk. All the navigating can make one tired and frustrated."

Overhearing the conversation, another fisherman pipes in, "Bring repellent for the bugs - they sure have a bite. And, 'ware the Soggy River Monster. Many a tale has been told of the pale monster dressed in rags with legs that bend like a dog's. Its hunting ground be the shores of the Soggy River and we've had at least five disappearances in the past year." (The Soggy River is the primary waterway that flows through Brinestump Marsh.)

The third fisherman stops working on his nets and chuckles realizing that the other two haven't said anything about Walthus. "The New Fish Trail leads from the Lost Coast Road directly to Walthus’ shack in the swamp. He's a little feller - what'cha call a halfling. Been there quite a few years now, been told he likes snakes. Can't figure out why myself. You won't miss the weathered marker - travel down the Lost Coast Road; it's roughly six miles southwest from town. It'll take you a good two hours on foot, if you're walking at a steady pace. Brinestump Marsh is just over two miles long and less than one mile wide. But you should find Walthus - he's better than any map."

Your conversations/travel within town have taken roughly an hour. Current time is now 3:00pm. Sunset in six hours.

Caine feels the closeness of Zaraleva. The youth blushes a bit, nods absently at her suggestion; even starting to write it down, before realizing the joke. He smiles at her.
One for you. Game on!

While the group made their way to to the Sandpoint Cathedral , Caine made certain to send word to Koya about his intentions, concerning the growing goblin problem; along with a detailed note of who also is in the group of volunteers.

At the Cathedral, Caine (obviously finding a fellow enthusiast) has to be pulled away from the enticing conversation.
Quite correct, sir; one does not simply carve haphazardly!

At the docks, the Magus is seen taking more copious notes as the grizzled (and smelly) fisherfolk explain the ins and outs of swamp living...

"Thank you so much," says Aiko to the fishermen. "We will definitely take your advice to heart."

To the team she says, "Well... we could get some alchemical bug repellent, but I think it's pretty expensive. Also, we are pressed for time. At this point we need to decide if we are going now and perhaps spending the night in the swamp, or if we are going to go tomorrow."

Leaving the tavern, Beastbrother motions to a horse patiently waiting outside and effortlessly swings himself up onto it. He rides bareback, evidently quite comfortable with riding.

After sorting out the wand he rides along with the party, keeping a quiet watch for any threats.

When Hattori asks about the swamp he says, "Now. Best not let them get too far away."

Zaraleva notes that he blushed instead of being irritated by her. So he's one of the good guys.

To the fishermen: "Thank you all! May your bounties be HUGE! Come see me if you get bitten instead of getting a bite."

Incidentally, vermin repellent is 5 gp, if anyone has cash burning a hole in their pocket.

"I think the Licktoads probably live in the swamp. They likely are not 'getting away,' this is simply... what happens every few years here in Sandpoint - another goblin tribe arrives up nearby, starts harassing people, then we have a war and the goblins are wiped out or pushed out until the next tribe arrives," replies Aiko delicately to Beastbrother.

"In any case. While I don't relish the notion of spending the night in a swamp, I do have a bedroll. I hope we can find dry ground before dark. Perhaps if we're lucky we can find Mr. Proudstump's home before it's too late and get some information from him."

"So... six miles down the Lost Coast Road, then along the New Fish Trail until we find Walthus' house. Let's go."

"And someone should sketch a map as we go."

My monk is sadly frugal and has little cash on him.

"All the more reason why we better get going now," he added. "I hope there's someone who's a better drawer than me because the best I've gotten so far is a house."

As the group continued to walk, he struck up a conversation with Aiko. "I didn't know you had so many weapons on you. Did you happen to work at the Blue Stones as well? I think I would have recognized you there given your... performances there." He made hand gestures to help him describe her performance the best way he could.

Ashlana has changed into clothing more fitting a journey into the swamp, although physical protection leaves much to be desired. A fluid mix of greens and browns completely covering her despite the heat, in an effort to protect from the potential dangers, and a red band tied around her wrist for good luck. And a large, mostly unused mace strapped to her back if she needs to make her own luck.

The fortune teller thanks Father Zantus and the fisherman profusely after they offer their assistance and advice.

"I think we should be as ready as we can be before we go in," she offers slowly. "I have some gold with me, I'm happy to pick up enough repellent for us! That is what the fisherman said we should do, anyway. And if we drop Ameiko's name, they're likely to give us a discount as well!"

Ashlana has 47gp on her and will buy a container of repellent for each member, at least.

As the party starts to leave Sandpoint and heads towards the Lost Coast Road, a man in fine clothing calls out to them.

"Hello there. Pardon the interruption, but I want to talk with you before you leave. I am Calvin Rimstone, owner of Rimstone Transportation. Sheriff Belor informs me that you have agreed to go into the marsh in search of those pesky goblins. As much as I'd like to offer you a wagon to help you travel, I'm stretch pretty thin right now - as you can imagine. Have you got everything you need for the journey?"

He looks at the well equipped party

"It certainly appears so. Well, in any case, you can never have too much of this."

He hands each of you a container with what looks like white paste.

"I know it smells bad, but it will keep the flies, bugs and mosquitoes away from you - at least for about 4 hours."

Each of you have received a container of Vermin Repellent

Ashlana you may still buy additional doses if you want.

"I can't thank you enough for doing this. May the blessing of our Lady Luck be with you on your journey."

Calvin smiles and waves to the party as he heads back into town.

Before we continue with the journey to Brinestump Marsh, please check the Discussion thread for marching order, default actions in combat and passive activities. Once we have a marching formation and everyone has had a chance to specify default combat actions and/or passive activities, we will continue the adventure.

Aiko likewise gratefully accepts the vermin repellent. "Much appreciated," she says, as she tucks it away.

To Adrian she notes, "I'm simply trying to be prepared - while we're expecting to encounter goblins, who knows what else is in the swamp now? The river monster? Giant insects? Different tools for different opponents."

"I've visited the House of Blue Stones a few times, but most of what I know, I learned from my father, who learned it from his mother, and so on for generations. The tumbling routines are just a way to make money."

She runs a thumb under the strap of her wicker pack idly as she walks and says, "My father told me that our family has always... worked with the Kaijitsus, and impressed upon me my duty to help Ameiko. I'm lucky that she looks out for me in return."

Adrian hastily takes a container of repellent.

Great. Bug bites always make my skin itch."

While walking, he continued his conversation, working on his left shoulder as he spoke. "That's why I avoid the swamp. It's bound to bring up something nasty out of nowhere," he sniffed.

"It must be a big honor to work with such a prestigious family."

"My understanding is that the repellent only lasts a few hours, so I'm saving it until we reach the swamp proper," says Aiko.

"Prestigious?" she replies to his comment about the Kaijitsus. "Ameiko is all that's left... and after what happened with Lonjiku and Tsuto, that may be for the best. But Ameiko deserves only the best. She has always taken care of me, and I will not let her down."

You set off to the Brinestump Marsh on the Lost Coast Road. The journey starts out somewhat scenic, the smells of the surrounding forest pleasant and the day's temperature not too high to be uncomfortable. Occasionally you pass a patrol from Sandpoint and the guards smile and say hello to you before they continue on their protection duties. You all keep an eye out for any signs of goblins or other sources of trouble, but so far the day has been quite uneventful.

After the first hour of travel you find a small shrine to Desna and take a break to catch your breath and consume some water.

The second hour is more of the same; however, the farther you get from Sandpoint the less maintained the "road" becomes. It is now nothing more than a trail with rocks and pot holes. The clay/sand that was prevelant before has now diminished into two narrow bands to support carriage wheels. It takes a bit more concentration to maintain your footing, but you manage to proceed with no issues.

After the second hour, signs of a marsh appear ahead. To your right west the forest floor becomes thicker with tangled with rising roots and stinging nettles. The sounds of buzzing insects and the smell of putrid water permeate your senses. Caine has been occasionally updating his notes with the details of your travels when you finally spot a weathered marker with the words "New Fish Trail". You breathe a sigh of relief at finding the marker, while at the same time the excitement of adventure builds.

The current time is now 5:15. Sunset in 3 hours, 45 minutes.

Ashlana, who had begun counting her coin, hastily pockets it at the arrival of Calvin Rimstone.

"Thank you, friend!" she says gratefully, taking one of the containers for herself.

Listening to Aiko and Adrian's conversation, she interjects, "Ameiko is great, isn't she? She's done so much to help me as well. When my father passed-" Her voice cuts off, realizing she's sharing more about her personal life than was usual for her. Ashlana feels for the harrow deck in her pockets. "Well, she's been a very good friend to me."

Ashlana watches their surroundings with a growing combination of unease and excitement as they find the marker for New Fish Trail. "Not much further until we reach Walthus Proudstump," she muses. "We've been fortunate to only see friendly faces along the way so far."

Now might be a good time to consume rations and refill waterskins. NOTE: Out on the trail the DC to find food/water is only 10 (which will consume 60 minutes minus 5 minutes for each point over 10 to a minimum of 30). Inside the marsh the DC will be 15 or 20 (depending on location) and may take twice as long.
