It has to do with them both being "black blades" it's murky interaction that comes from phantom blade saying the phantom weapon functions as a black blade except as noted. Lot's of room for interpretation.

As far as exploits to look at Eldritch Blade and Spell Strike are the two biggest ones. You may dodge taking the vmc magus that way and save a couple feats (though it might still be better to take the vmc magus).

I need only the Arcanist Black Blade,so I will never use the other. Yes, it's best to have the VMC Magus for the Broad Study Arcana.

I'm not sure if you can have a phantom weapon and a black blade technically. It's kind of a grey area as the phantom blade archetype was written a bit fast and loose. That is not to say it's bad, it's one of my favorite archetypes, but it does leave a lot to interpretation. If your GM is ok with that and combining the spell combat from phantom blade and spell strike from vmc magus then you should be good.

Have you looked at the blade adept only exploits? There's a few that will probably be very useful in this build.

Well, one doesn't negates the other. In the books there is nothing that say that I can't have both. Which exploits?

I don't know what you are planning on doing so I can't sayif it will work or not, but you can't use spell combat with slots from another list unless you have braid study. That is true for both the magus and phantom blade

If you explain what you are trying to do you'll get better information about whether it is ok by the rules or will require a GM's exception.

An Eldritch Knight build.

I will use one level of Phantom Blade to get Spell Combat and the VMC Magus to take Spell Strike and the Arcana Broad Study for the spells.

My idea is 1 Panthom Blade/8 Blade Adept Arcanist/1 Fighter/10 EK/VMC Magus (yes we will combine the two tipe of multiclass, in the book they say that normaly it's best to do separatly, but they can also be combined and the DM it's ok with it).

We will use the mythic rules, so for the spell failure i will take freedom from component (somatic) from the Archmage path. With feats like Prestigius Spellcaster and the trait Magical Knack i will have a level 20 caster level.

We will use also the Pathfinder Unchained rules for saves and BAB for a total of 12/6/12, +15 BAB, 9 level of spell (only one ore two of 9 i know), and 20 caster level with a full Black Blade thanks to the Exploit Eldritch Blade. With the mythic spell Transformation i will have also a +20 BAB without lose my capacity to use spells.

We will begin at level 11 so i will not risk to die early, because i know that this build would be to risky to do at a low level.

I know that many would prefer Wizard over Arcanist and no level Fighter, but i prefer this way.

I think that this build could be a "better Magus" (but not for the bonus spell, in that the Magus wins thanks to Improved Spell Recal), but it's not something that can be done normaly. Like i said the credits go to Pathfinder Unchained and Mythic Adventures.

It's ok, i asked this for a multiclass build.

Thanks!
Keep in mind then that you can only use spell combat with spiritualist spell slots unless you get the appropriate magus arcana to allow spell combat with other slots, which can only be gotten through the magus vms as far as I know. Even then it's debatable if that would work.

Well, this Spell Combat is the same of the Magus, so by default it should work.

Nothing requires that you use spell combat with your phantom weapon.

So can i use spell combat with a normal one-hand melee weapon?

I know that the Spellstrike of the Phantom Blade can be done ONLY with his phantom weapon. But Spellcombat? Can I use it with another weapon? In the description it say that I can use it exactly like the power of the Magus, and only Spellstrike has the exception with the phantom weapon. After all to use Spellcombat i need to have a free hand.

Chronicle of Legends is out and there is a capstone for the magus. I think it's name is Legendary Blade. Someone know what it does?

And the new Magus Capstone? Chronicle of Legends is out and there is a capstone for the magus: Legendary Blade. Someone know what it does?

And the capstone of the Magus? I like the class, but the cool abilities are all at the first levels. His capstone is not so great. If they could make one like the Warpriest: Magus spent some points of arcane pool to became a war/magic machine (like bab as a warrior and other things of the wizard for a short time)

Sorry for my bad English

Thank you for your answers, im sorry that i didn't early...

BadBird i prefer to be a human fighter/arcanist, because i like the concept, but you give me many ideas with the feats! So thank you! I decided to take also the VMC Magus, so it will feel a bit more gish. Thank you all again and sorry for my bad English!

Thank you all for your answers. I think that i will go with the URogue!

Personally i don't like wizards. Don't get me wrong they are powerful and everything, but i prefer to play a sorcerer or an arcanist for full arcane casters.

Why i want to be an Arcane Trickster? Because i like the idea of a thief with magic support, but not so focus on arcane power like a rogue 1/wizard 3/AT 10 build. For this reason i prefer to make a Rogue-Slayer 6/ Sorcerer-Arcanist 4 build to take the AT.

I prefer the sneaky part over the arcane part, but i don't want play an Eldritch Scoundrel yet. I don't want to make power play or be the best at "magic sneak attack". I just want to have fun with that build, but i can't decide between the Unchained Rogue and the Slayer, because i like both. So i want to read some opinions of those two classes in that kind of build.

Thats all.

Hello, i would like to create an Arcane trickster with one of those two classes, but i can't decide which one ist best for the job: with the Slayer i will have a better BAB and i can be better in meele, but Unchained Rogue has many great options like debility injury or finess damage. For the magic part i want to choose or a sorcerer (sage) or an arcanist, but this is not important now. The levels will be 6 of the sneaky class, 4 of the arcane class and the rest Arcane trickster. So the question is: Slayer or Unchained Rogue? Thank you and sorry for my bad English :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have an idea of an Eldritch Knight build with dex, and i would like some opinions. No Magus! I love the class but this time i would like to make a full caster. We start at level 1 and we will arrive at level 20 at the end. I would create a human fighter 1/arcanist(blade adept) 9/EK 10 that fights with a scimitar. We have 30 points for abilities and my build is this :

Str 10
Dex 16
Con 14
Int 17+2
Sag 12
Car 10

I will give 1 points to int, so it will arrive to 20, and the others 4 to dex. As arcane exploit i will take from the 9 level of blade adept Spell Strike (exploit level 5) and Eldritch Blade (exploit level 7).

For the feats:

1°:Weapon Finesse, Toughness, Dervish Dance
3°:Arcane Armor Training
5°:Exploit extra (Dimensional Slide)
7°:Arcane Armor Mastery
9°:Quicken Spell
11°:(Metamagic feat), Exploit extra (Hasted Assault)
13°:Improved Critical (scimitar)
15°:(Metamagic feat), Spell Perfection (Quicken Spell Vampiric Touch)
18°:
19°:

My master give me the opportunity to don't make a swift action for Arcane Armor Mastery, so it will always be active, and i will take a Celestial Armor, if i find one. I took Spell Perfection with the Quickne Spell for the possibility to combine it with Spell Strike, so i will make all my attack and cast the spell without increase my spell slot always (a bit like a Magus spell combat, but only with vampiric touch and without the -2 to attack roll).

What do you think? Is it a good build or not? Should i change somthing? Thank you and sorry for my bad English.

Overhand Chop is an ability of the Two-Handed Fighter archetype, and a PG combined it with the feat Power Attack, making an incredible amount of damages only at level 3. My question is: can he use them in the same attack? Another question for beyond level 6: when he uses Overhand Chop he can make only one attack during his round or all his attack?
Thank you and sorry for my bad English!

Could you make a section in your guide for a Mythic Magus options, please?

VMC Magus is better than VMC sorcerer in general, but the real question is what do you want to do with the character? Adding random game elements together and hoping for synergy with whatever you want is a desperately slow process.

I want a fighter that can be a little more versatile of the normal one, not powerfull. It's also for make a useful and fun fighter. I was of the idea that VMC Magus was a good VMC for a Fighter, but in my precedent post many people said that was a weak VMC for it......

If you want to see it the link for the post is this:

Hi, i posted some time ago a post for a build, Lore warden VMC Magus, but it seem that for many people wasn't a good combination, so i was thinking: what if a Lore Warden with VMC Sorcerer? Like i said in the other post i would like a Fighter with little magic power, so if not a VMC Magus i was thinking about the VMC Sorcerer. But the question is: which is a good bloodline for it?
Thank you and sorry for my bad English!

P.s: NO item mastery feats suggestions and no Child of Acavna and Amaznen, please.

to the OP: if you're gonna use a bastard sword, you might as well go with a katana instead (deadly is such a sweet property).

I don't think that will be many katana in the campain, and i prefer the bastard sword for the flavor.

P.s.: i used a katana in jade reggent with my Magus Kensai.Yes, it was deadly ;)

You really won't have many points in your arcane pool, it would be best to get arcana that doesn't need to use those points like a familiar.

If you want to use a bastard sword just use it in two hands, you don't need a feat for that. If you use it in one hand you lose a lot of damage from strength and power attack.

You are right, i was thinking about a magus with a bastard sword and not a fighter! XD

For the point of Arcana pool i can take one or two extra arcana pool feat, the fighter has so many bonus feats that i don't known what to take.

Darksol the Painbringer wrote:

I can tell you right now that it is not a powerful build, and in my opinion, isn't applicable when Advanced Armor and Weapon Training options exist for Fighters to have magical abilities. Even Item Mastery effects give magical powers, and you don't need spellcasting to use them.

Lore Warden Fighter is okay (depending on which version you use), but using VMC for something like Magus isn't a smart use of your abilities.

For Lore Warden i use the first version. Item Mastery is ok, but for that i was thinking to take Warrior Spirit (advanced weapon training) to enchant my sword with the ability Training, which give me a combat feat of my choice, and i take Item Mastery to have some spells, while i can use my arcane pool to enchant my weapon with other capacity. So i can have both Magus Arcana/Pool and Item Mastery (with this i can have All Item Mastery feats without use a feat!)

In addition i can use Warrior Spirit and Arcane Pool to make a weapon at high level 4d6 damage of Bane enchantment. For example i fight against a demon: i use Warrior Spirit to take Bane enchantment against chaotic creature, and i can use my Arcane Pool to take Bane against evil creature. The demon is a chaotic evil creature, so +4d6 damage with every attack. There are also many other Magus Arcana that are very useful for a fighter: first of all Hasted Assault.

Hi, i would like to make a Lore Warden vmc Magus and i was thinking about the arcana that i can take. I have in my mind the idea of a Fighter with a little of inner magic power (not Child of Acavna and Amaznen), so i would like some advice for the build (i prefer STR over DEX). The only dead level of the vmc Magus for this buid is the 11 (with Spellstrike), but i would like to take the Pool Stike Arcana for this dead level (yes, i know that is a terrible Arcana for a Magus, but i think that can be ok for a Fighter). I would like to take Accurate Strike, Dispelling Strike, Bane Blade and Reflection using the Extra Arcana feast. What do you think? Any advice?

We will start at level 1 to a max of 17 level, i think (Curse of the Crimson throne campain). My stats wil be made with the calculation points (my character is human).

If 20 points:
STR 18 (+2 racial)
DEX 12
COS 14
INT 13
SAG 10
CHA 10

If 25 points:
STR 19 (+2 racial)
DEX 12
COS 14
INT 14
SAG 10
CHA 10

I don't know yet what feats take, but some of them will be for Extra Arcana (1 or 2). With weapon i prefer bastard sword (so i think that the first feat will be for that). I would like to take medium armor proficiency too, but it's not so important.
Thank you and sorry for my bad English.

HI, i would like to known in your opinion which one is better. I think that Eldritch Knight with VMC Magus can be very powerful with magic, but the Magus have three things that can make the EK VMC Magus jealous: Spell combat, casting in armor (unless it's a DEX build) and spell recall. What do you think? Sorry for my bad english.

Ah, for the dragon type i was thinking about the silver or the golden dragon.

Hi, i would like to make a Dragonheir Scion vmc Magus and i was thinking about the arcana that i can take. What do you think about the Dragonheir Scion (Fighter archetype)?

Well yes, fighters are good to take damages, but with survive i mean not only take hits. I mean if the Magus can deal with every situation, like have strategies against the most monsters and classes

I like very much the class, and i think that his strength is in a mix of power and versatility. So i have a question: for you the Magus has the capacity, or the potential, to survive at everything? Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

Yes, i known it. But it seems that is not so great as archetype, because for 4 levels of spellcasting you lost not only 4 or 5 feasts, but also all your weapon training, and with the new rules of Pathfinder Unchained you can do many things with that.

I like the idea of a Fighter with a little magic ability. It is true that the Spellstrike level is a dead level for the Fighter, but Arcane Pool and the Magus Arcana worth the lost, expecialy for haste. And the class has many bonus feasts. What do you think? Sorry for my bad English.

So Child of A&A isn't that good, but do you think that Dragonheir Scion is better of Lore Warden? I mean, i have read good opinions of the Lore Warden, but nothing about the Dragonheir Scion. It isn't even in the guides of the Fighter. Is it a good archetype for the Fighter?

Hello, i want to create a fighter with one of those archetypes, but i can't decide which one. So i would like to read some opinions about those 3. Thank you and sorry for my bad english!
