Male Tiefling Wizard 2 (760 XP); AC12, HP12/12, per.10, spells:1st - 2/3, lizard owner
The fight seems all but over, so Akmenos shifts to collect intel. He commands Diego to start moving south to scout the path back to the room the fought the leeches in, never getting more than 100ft ahead. Diego will dash and still take a few rounds to get to the limit. He'll move along the ceiling.

You recover half your ammunition by taking a minute after a battle to search (PHB 146), but that's just a reference. It's up to the DM, I normally only have ammunition lost if there is a fumble or something (like roll 1d6 after the encounter and lose that many arrows). Akmenos grabs his dagger and says, That could have gone better, but at least the creature didn't get behind us... mind if I took some time to recover? There's no need for Garnult to waste energy and I would like to recover some of magic power anyways.

Akmenos holds his action until after the latest barrage of attacks, then weaves an illusion to create a floating stone wall that is roughly 5ft by 5ft between the snake on the brazier and the party. I would like to hinder the snake not so much by it believing that the wall is real, but by just blocking its sight for its next attack since it has to pass through the illusion to get at anyone.

The knight I get, but how do you elves live for a century without frivolity? There is no clear and present danger, we're within a sprint of the front door and this ominous bucket is nothing more than a part of theatrics. Akbemos then kicks the base of one of the green torches. Is there another path forward if that is all we care about?

That hallway goes back the way we came... from beyond the zombies. Let us head back to the green flame room. It has much greater purpose here. Akmenso heads back the other way when Diego returns. When/if the group follows Akmenos checks to see if the door is locked. Investigation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Akmenos commands Diego to return to the hallway and wait. There appears to be an important location the other direction... some pillars with gargoyles carved in them with matching braziers tossing out green flame plumes... That might be the better first destination for us.

After reviewing the tapestries, Akmenos sees the party moving through the secret door and decides to send Diego out to scout the areas we are leaving keeping a telepathic eye out behind us. Akmenos moves to the intersection and sends Diego west as far as he can go while maintaining his telekenetic link with Akmenos.

Akmenos scribbles notes and updates his study of the cloth, checking the material construction and color choice to estimate how they have been made. These are worthless but if they were in better condition it would be an impressive antique! Investigation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 These appear to be around the time of Ghana Njanu or Ghana Solongo, battling the dungeon to keep the evil beaten back. All this history is so interesting! At this point he might as well be rubbing his palms together and grinning.

Akmenos lingers to check his reference book of Rappan Athuk lore to try and see if he knows the central figure. If not, he just writes a few notes and moves on. History: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 Diego hangs out on the ceiling behind the group to keep an eye on our tail.

That's really only true in early and in late levels. Levels 1-3 are over quickly, but it is easy for things to spiral out of control in combat. The 5e "sweet spot" is like levels 5-15 where the PCs have more options, can take a few hits and retreat when necessary. Then in late levels monsters are immune to almost anything and the best strategy is meta-gaming saving throws so long as it isn't a legendary monster which will take luck and tactics together. EDIT It's also why TWF is common early in 5e and then changing to great weapons with bonus spells or action surges.

Evoking another bolt of fire, Akmenos fires back into the action. Spell Damage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
I'll step in front of Ulisfuen to avoid penalties to attack for cover - if there are any penalties from where I am positioned.
