Gentle Storm begins humming or perhaps growling deep within his chest, an unnaturally deep bassy sound that makes the ground he treads tremble ever so slightly. Chanting in wildspeak he slams his spear onto the ground causing a sudden shift in the underlayer beneath the Bramble of Twigjacks.

A sandtrap opens up and begins to swallow vast quantities of now loose soil, plant matter, and foe alike creating a mire that hinders their movement.

Reflex vs Flying Flame, Antlion Trap: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 181d10 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19

The twigjack bramble is burned by Alessandria's flames and slips towards the center of the antlion trap. They scramble forward to get to the outer edge of the shifting sand, then they launch a volley of splinters and brambles from their bodies that fly all around you!

Rain of Splinters: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 5) = 17

The lead twigjack shouts back at Gentle Storm in plantspeak: "It is too late for that! It is the dawn of a new age, when all interlopers will be driven from the forest forever! The people of the village will be the blood sacrifice we need to bring the Green Man to this world!" He then casts a spell, trying to slow Alessandria!

Everybody takes 17 piercing damage (basic Reflex DC 21). Alessandria must attempt a DC 24 Fortitude save against slow.

"Then your ashes shall feed the groves to come." He snarls, drawing the flensing flame from Alessandria's own body and raising the flaring orb of condensed fire.

"We do not seek to bring you harm. We seek knowledge as to who and why the unwillful burning and logging has occurred against the pact of the Wildwoods. We wish to end this conflict before the potential blight it may cause progresses on either side. If you send a peaceful representative of your people to speak with us or allow us to enter and speak with you without being accosted. We can assure you there will be no harm."

One of the loggers steps forward. "I am Declan Berk. I speak for the people of this village. Our actions were only taken to defend ourselves. We were attacked unprovoked by a horde of tiny plant creatures. We have endured multiple nightly raids claiming the lives of may of our neighbors and more than a few of our pets and livestock. We cut and burned the trees around the borders of the village, hoping to prevent our assailants from being able to approach undetected.

Gentle Storm saunters forward to approach Declan, but not so close as to endanger the man, keeping a respectful distance only hoping to get close enough to show what he hopes will be proof enough. He offers up the tiny mask that the leader had worn, as well as the wand it carried as evidence.

"Might these look familiar? The trappings of the leader of the tiny plant creatures, twigjacks as we call them. They can be unusually cruel beings and over protective against what they see as trespassers." He leaves out the additional details that they can be easily rallied by fey to such acts, as he feels that would paint blame on the fey which could have even more disastrous consequences.

"Which won't be bothering you anymore, we prevented them from summoning a malevolent being through ritual sacrifices before coming here. While we are willing to parley and offer succor, I cannot say the arboreals of the area will be quite so easy to convince, as they see the burning as you having woefully disregarded the pact's sanctity."

We will do what we can, but it may be impossible to shield you from all of their wrath."

Declan and the other loggers seem to relax a little bit when they see the twigjack leader's gear. "We appreciate your aid. We will try to make amends for violating the treaty, but I hope the arboreals can understand that we did so out of desperation, not malice. ***

When you return to the grove, you find the arboreals still engaged in their impassioned debate. Ironbark begrudgingly agrees to hear the new information you have brought.

Without any supporting evidence, convincing the angry arboreals to leave Marin’s Mill alone requires a successful DC 32 Diplomacy check. However, the PCs can lower this DC by successfully making any of
the following arguments:

• The villagers of Marin’s Mill are defending themselves against unprovoked twigjack attacks. A first-hand account of the twigjack attacks reduces the DC by 5, although Ironbark openly questions whether the twigjack attacks were truly “unprovoked.” Providing plausible justification for the twigjack attacks by reporting on the worship site reduces the DC by an additional 2; if the PCs also provide proof of Splintershank’s demise, they reduce the DC by an additional 3.

• The villagers actively want peace. If the PCs can convince the loggers’ leader, Declan Berk, to accompany them while they make their case before Ironbark, they reduce the DC by 4.

Thus, with all the evidence, the Diplomacy DC is only 18. You can do it!

The urge to nurture and protect, twisted into a gnawing hunger for vengeance. They meant no harm, but that will not save them if the monster is not contained."

When you are ready, you step through a portal to another Elder Oak near the disturbance. The vision guides to the west bank of the Sellen River about a half day's travel from the oak. As the trees begin to thin out closer to the river, you find yourselves among a series of rough campsites and ramshackle buildings sprawled for several miles along the water’s edge: fishing shacks, hunting cabins, makeshift docks, and other structures of similar purpose. Numerous homesteaders of various ancestries are going about their business as you approach, offering curt nods by way of greeting. You are directed to the trading post and told that its proprietor tends to be well informed on various happenings in the area.

At the post, a pleasant, round-faced human woman of late middle age stands behind the counter. She has twinkling dark eyes and brown hair that’s developing a slight sheen of silver. She greets you warmly as you enter her establishment.

"Well, hello there! I don’t believe we’ve met. You must have arrived on the barge that passed through this morning. My name is Sigrid Jandevik, and I run this fine establishment. Is there anything I can help you with? I’ve got dry goods, hunting supplies, blades, tackle, and if you need something that isn’t here, I’ll do what I can to get it brought in for you on the next boat."

"Ah, finally! A chance to freshen up," Wispil splashes aaround at the river's edge before they make their way into town.

"Ah, great to meet you, Sigrid. We've heard rumors of a beast attack in the area, and the druids have sent us to check it out."

"Ah, goo. The Lodge sent you!" Sigrid says, relieved. "I'm the one who sent out the request for help."[/b]

Glancing briefly around the store to make sure there are no customers within earshot, Sigrid drops her voice to a low whisper. "So, I’ve got a bit of a problem. Nothing too serious, but one that requires discretion and perhaps a somewhat specialized skill set. You see… I have a habit of turning into, well, a bear, when the moon is full. Always have. Folks around here don’t know, and I’d prefer to keep it that way; they’re good people, but they wouldn’t understand.

"Most times, it hasn’t been a problem. I’ll just close up shop for a few days and make sure I get myself out to the woods before sundown. But lately…" She shakes her head and sighs wistfully. "It hasn’t been the same around here since that awful business up at the gala. Folks are scared and angry, and if I’m being honest, so am I. I’d never forgive myself if any of those feelings got the better of me when I wasn’t entirely in my right mind. What I need is someone to keep an eye on me for the next few nights and make sure I don’t do anything I’d regret."

"Well, we could watch out for you," Wispil offers. "Maybe in exchange for a discount?" The goose looks over the stock to see if there's anything worth coveting.

Gentle Storm seems quite fine with Higgins leading this chat since he had less experience with townsfolk than he suspected the drake did. That is until he tried to haggle for a discount, to which the druid snapped a look to his diminutive companion. "We do this for the people of the Wild Woods not personal gain."

He gave a small sigh but shook his head ultimately, "Sigrid, may I ask a few questions about your situation?"

"Given ample time I can ready myself with some therianthropic protections. Tangled brush to help keep you in one locations hopefully. A handful of spells designed to slow you down along a pathway, sticky webs, diminufication though that'd hardly buy us any time if we're sensing a protracted stay and it won't work if you aren't willing to accept it anyroad."

Leaning into his walking spear he hums and strokes his beard. "Tangles of the mind to keep you fron running too far, again short loved. If you do manage to go after anyone I've defensive options as well incase you get a bit peckish. Which hopefully wouldn't be the case of course."

Though I' afraid as things stand right now the great magics of the wildwood are dimished somewhat. Years of long vigil take their toll on us all in various ways after all." He slaps his primordial pouch(belly) with a hearty laugh.

"I'll be grateful for your aid," Sigrid says. "My condition is something that I've always had. The extra strength served me well in my younger years as a guardian of the forest. Now that I've retired, I do my best to protect the wilds by taking every opportunity to educate my neighbors about ways to lessen the environmental impact of their activities and encouraging their responsible behavior whenever I can. I've had a good deal of success, too, although their failures still sometimes exasperate her. But I don't want the other side of me to ruin all the hard work I've put in here."

She turns to Kilitsi and Wispil. "I hope I won't attack you! I'm generally good-natured as a bear, but I don't know how I'll react this time. I'll happily reward you with some of the alchemical items in my inventory as thanks for your help."

The tension that Alessandria had held at Marin's Mill seems absent from her bearing as she listens to Sigrid's tale with a barely suppressed excitement.

"Are there any particular triggers that have earned your wrath? Should we take care not to bear open flames or bared blades?"

"Or, like, anything that like comforts you? And is there like anyone here who's particularly hobbled, who would, like, come try to see where you are and snoop into your business?"

"No, nothing or nobody specific comes to mind," Sigrid says. "You'll just have to take things as they come, I suppose."

Once you've asked all your questions, you spend the rest of the day making preparations. That night, as the full moon rises, Sigrid lets out a growl as she shifts and grows, fur sprouting along her body as she transforms into a burly brown bear. She begins to slowly wander through her territory, a rough three-mile circuit up and down the riverbank.

In general, she’s focused on normal ursine pursuits: foraging for food, splashing in the river, and scratching stubborn back itches against tree trunks. Few of the region’s inhabitants bat an eye at the sight of a bear. In fact, in an area with this many druids and rangers, it’s not uncommon to see bears and other wild animals strolling around in the company of humanoid companions.

Bear Watch:
This flashpoint uses a Victory Point subsystem (GM Core 184) that tracks how well the PCs apply their skills to identify and react to situations that provoke the transformed Sigrid, ensuring she doesn’t do anything she’d regret the following morning. Each night involves at least two complications.

Complications involve completing one or more smaller objectives, each of which lists a number of Victory Points, several skills, and associated check DCs. The PCs have several brief phases to resolve the complication before Sigrid arrives, and during each phase, each PC can attempt a check to earn VPs toward the current objective. Once the party has earned the listed number of VPs, that objective is resolved; any excess VPs, such as from a critical success, are lost.

Encourage the PCs to choose exploration activities as they accompany Sigrid around the area. As long as at least one PC is engaged in the Scout activity, the group can attempt a single DC 21 Perception check using the highest Perception bonus among the scouting PCs to spot each complication in advance. On a success or critical success, they have three rounds to address the complication; otherwise, they have only two.

Once per complication, one PC can attempt a DC 22 Deception check to momentarily distract Sigrid with food or loud noises, buying the group one more round in which to act. Each time they successfully buy time this way, the Deception check DC increases by 1; Sigrid gradually grows wise to their tricks.

Perception DC 21: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16

As the night begins, Sigrid wanders aimlessly for a while before detecting distant smoke and ambling in its direction.

Complication: Fire Hazard

An unattended, inexpertly built campfire smolders amid sleeping trappers’ tents. The fire overflows with embers that could easily spark a forest fire. You will need to evacuate the camp and hide the fire before Sigrid does it for you. Violently.

Objective 1 (3 VP): The PCs must rouse the trappers and convince them to vacate the area. Doing so requires succeeding at a DC 23 Deception check, DC 21 Diplomacy check, or DC 25 Intimidate check.

Objective 2 (2 VP): Once the PCs earn the trappers’ cooperation, they must smother the fire and hide all traces of it with a DC 22 Acrobatics check or DC 18 Survival check. The PCs can work toward this objective before completing the first one, but trying to do so increases the DCs of all skill checks during this complication by 1 due to the trappers’ outrage and interference.
