You can either answer the question about the worms yourselves with a Life Science check, or talk to the miners with a Diplomacy (Gather Information) check.
It takes the trio of Starfinders very little time to fix up the scanners while talking to the miners.
Mich Igan
|
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (20) + 9 + (6) = 35
Mich talks (a lot) to the miners to understand what's going on!
| Game Master S |
The miners complain that their last three expeditions were derailed because scans found archaeologically significant artifacts beneath the surface of the worksites, costing them credits and time. They believe Elgr, who joined the team just before the first ill-fated expedition, is tampering with the equipment—and that Kataali is protecting him.
Lexicor
|
Are either Elgr or Kataali nearby, or can we speak to the miners alone or away from those two?
Lexicor recalls Kataali was actively protecting the equipment, but Elgr he did not recall being particulary engaged.
Was Elgr doing anything during the worms (sorry I was not seeing it)
| Game Master S |
He was largely stunned. Yes you can talk to them alone.
Lexicor
|
Lexicor will talk to the miners about their comments.
Do you have any evidence or observations which lead you to draw said conclusions about either Elgr or Kataali? Our observations have been limited, so with a small sample size, we cannot yet make the same determinations. For instance, Kataali seemed generally concerned about the equipment. Are the scans a benefit or detriment to your work?
| Game Master S |
"We need to actually find a place to do some mining if we're going to get paid beyond the bare minimum, which isn't enough. There's just NO WAY that everywhere we scan are "ArChAoLoGiCaLlY SiGnIfIcAnT."
Mich Igan
|
As Lexicor talks to the miners, Mich takes a better look at the scanners to see if they have tempered with.
Engineering (+4 with tools): 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 4 = 25
| Game Master S |
Mich concludes that they haven't been tampered with, but they aren't optimized. The resolution isn't great, and that with an expert's touch they'd perform much better.
| Game Master S |
Meaning the party thinks they are more skilled at focusing the scanners than the team, not that the local team has done it poorly on purpose.
Amariel, Plumber for Hire
|
"Hey, maybe we can get a chance to, y'know, optimize the equipment, and then they could the mining," Amariel rumbles.
That seems to me to be an engineering problem, but it could also be computers or physical science.
| Game Master S |
Engineering to calibrate, Physical Science to interpret the results.
Mich Igan
|
Engineering (+4 with tools): 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 11 + 4 = 35
Eager to help, Mich starts to calibrate the scanners
| Game Master S |
Mich's skills are on full display. Everyone, frustrated miner and nervous management alike, is in awe of how precise he's got them calibrated...
Lexicor
|
Lexicor notes the precision
”Excellent work. You missed your calling. “
He pulls up the data and interprets the results.
physics : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
”Definitely third order harmonics in the scanner return patterns. The resolution is precise and less than .01 decibels of variation.“
| Game Master S |
Lexicor looks at the super-tuned-extra-EXTRA-hi-def readings... and concludes that none of the scans are of ruins, but of a MASSIVE underground cave complex! The android looks over his shoulder to see that everyone has gathered 'round.
Elgr is the first to break the stunned silence of this revelation. “Starfinders, huh?” he says, watching his team jump to attention at Kataali’s order. “I’ll make sure everyone knows how much you helped us today. Kataali’s happily back to work, you saved Rukka’s precious scanners, and the rest have put aside their suspicions for now. Maybe I’ll see you out there someday. I love my planet, but it must be so exciting to explore the stars.” Elgr’s eyes glisten behind his goggles. “Anyway. Can’t waste a second, Kataali’s calling. Thanks again!”
