It is a vermin and it is mindless, it is immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms.).
Esgean has some knowledge of these creatures and inform the group that it is a giant bombardier beetle. The beetle itself is still not paying attention to the group that is standing in the doorway. It continues to nudge and push the corpse into the corner among a pile of trash and filth.
A sour decaying aroma starts to move among the group and down the hallway.

Being a paladin isn't like the other things that Felix has tried to be back in Kessan. As a blacksmith, he had been told he was hammering the metal wrong; as a farmhand, he had been told his instincts with the animals were wrong; even walking around as a guardsman was something he'd been doing wrong. But Sir Dramott told him that sometimes, he has to do what he believes is right, even when others are telling him he's wrong.
And he knows he is right: this creature is dangerous and needs to be put down before it can kill again. That realization is so powerful that he almost doesn't feel the giant beetle's acid splash over him. He swings again.

Moving down the corridor the group takes charge. Jhessa cast Blessing of the Faithful on Felix to empower his next move. Thanks to the acrobatics, Kevan springs into flanking position as his Rapier finds a soft spot in the beetle’s natural armor.

The beetle slumps lifelessly off the corpse. From his clothing, he looks to be a villager from Kassen.

If so, he casts and moves out into the hallway. However, if not, then he will step five feet to the right, staying inside the room, and then cast.
Bracing himself, the young magic-user manuevers the best he can, so as to not engulf the paladin in his spell. Aldmus then barks out, “Manus Ardenti!”, at which point a cone of pale blue, searing flame shoots from his outstretched fingertips, directly at the massing swarm!

When the immediate threat seems to have passed, Felix turns to the others.
"I am sorry. That was foolish of me. I should have thought better about approaching a threat that wasn't immediately attacking us. Provoking that swarm put us all in danger."
At these last words, he indicates the numerous bites and scratches covering his exposed skin.
"When I saw that the giant beetle was dragging that man's body into the refuse, I worried about what other victim's remains might be at risk."
| Aldmus Greymantle |
Rubbing his arms and wincing in pain from numerous bug bites, Aldmus pauses a moment, swats at his sleeve, and a tiny beetle drops out and down to the floor. Shuddering, he says, "It's understandable, Felix. Just learn from it, ok?"
"All of us need to learn quickly from our mistakes, and try not to repeat them. Speaking of which..." he pauses for effect, then says, "Should we temporarily retreat and get our bearings? We obviously underestimated the danger here. A mistake. Not that I'm in favor of a full retreat, mind you. Just looking at our options...logically."
Another pause, then a shrug and a grin, "If we're staying, we at least have to light some torches so we have fire available if the swarm comes back. I can't cast that spell again until tomorrow..."

As her heartrate slows down after the beetle blitz, Jhessa too tries not to scratch at the numerous irritating bites peppering her skin. "No, that wasn't good but you weren't to know, Felix. We're ultimately ok though," she says in a calm tone, trying to take some of the heat out of any potential recriminations, before turning to Aldmus' questions.
"Perhaps there's a way around that room a different way - or is that what you're saying, Aldmus?" she asks. "This place seems like a maze in general. Is there any way we can make a map of it? That might help us get our bearings. Also," she adds, dropping her voice and gesturing towards the door behind her, "whoever - or whatever - is behind that door has gone quiet.
