There is a spell feat to make spells non-lethal that you would have to take for that.
I was thinking of spells like command and heal, not ones that do damage. Not sure if the test is to see how he does with a staff or how he does in a battle.

Ronnie strides forward confidently, intending to give these little guys an intimidating glare, only to find out he is too far away for them to see his face clearly enough to be scared. I'm five foot short of my intimidating glare range of 30' and would rather ensure that my shield is raised and that I can get an AoO with my reach weapon. That leaves me with an unused action that I don't know what to do with.

Webny recognizes these as only the finest kobold warriors. The typical kobold trains with agile weaponry, favoring the light pick for its use in crafting new tunnels to expand their domains through underground reaches. Kobolds are capable of landing sneaky strikes against unsuspecting foes but are just as quick to scamper off to safety when they don’t, as a group, outnumber their enemies at least two to one. They are able to scaper out of dodge quickly before you have much time to react.
Webny quickly finds a weakness and takes advantage as her arrow finds a decayed scale. Achurius moves up forming a defensive line.
