"Oh" says Khellek.

"That is not good. This is the banner of the Broken Spine Clan, a violent tribe of orcs with a deep-seeded hate of humans—and of members of the Pathfinder Society in particular."

He thinks for a moment.

"The placement of the banner in the cavern is a sort of ritual challenge. "

He sighs "Orcs are not my strong point. It might just mean 'We were here', or it might mean 'You are now entering Broken Spine territory' I suspect the latter is more likely. Odd that it is here rather than the entrance. Maybe they don't want the other orc tribes to see it as a challenge to them?"

Props to you!

Grog can hear some slight movement in the cavern. Some sounds of breath, the shifting of armor. You are not alone in here.

Fethril does not detect any magic auras at the moment, but he recalls that the spell is blocked by 1 foot of stone, so there are parts of the cavern that the spell cannot reach, such as the side chambers or behind the columns.

Sylvester watches with anticipation from behind the large cat as Doodle moves forward.

I moved your token for you. :)

As Doodle moves up to the banner...

“Pinkskins! I told you, Kogan! I may not be able to see them before you, but I can smell their perfumed skin long before you spot them.”

Emerging from the shadows, a large orc with prominent lower tusks, milky white eyes, and innumerable scars steps forward and snorts contemptuously.

“And what’s more, I reckon these pinkskins are the Pathfinders we were expecting.” A toothy grin spreads across the orc’s meaty face as the guttural laughs of several more orcs echo off the cavern walls. He continues, “I am Magra of the Broken Spine Clan. I demand to know what right Pathfinders have to cross into the Hold of Belkzen and pass beneath Urgir’s walls—all without the protection of the clans. It is especially galling when your Society owes me so much gold!”

The hidden orcs laugh again, and impossibly, his grin widens. “And before you let your itchy weapon hands get the better of you, know that I have an entire clan of brothers in Urgir who expect me back soon and know where to come find me. If they fail to find me alive, rest assured that they will find you.”

With a Light spell and her low-light vision, Doodlevain can see a number of orcs hiding in alcoves that would have been out of line of sight from the rest of the party. They do they not appear to be this "Kogan" that Magra was talking to, but louder laughter echoes from behind the column.

Sylvester laughs knowing that Kogan is making a fine point. Violence is always an option but usually the worst option when a deal can made.

"You are right of course. As usual our leadership sent us in unaware of the local political situation and clearly straight into a trap as well.

"So tell us what needs to be done to get the approval of the clans?"

There is no harm in seeing what they want. The veracity of their claim on this piece of land is interesting but potentially not that important.

Khellek listens to the orcs words... they are boastful, but are they true?

The elderly scholar had years of listening to student explanations about "The hell-hound burned my homework", and "the portal to the plane of water opened and soaked my essay making the ink run". He knew when someone was trying a fast one.

Sense Motive, +13

It is true that you are going under the great orc city of Urgir.
And Magra certainly believes that Pathfinders owe him money. Whether or not this is a well-researched legally enforceable claim is rather besides the point.

"You see, I lost a large sum of money at the Bloodworks in Urglin when a team of Pathfinders cheated in their combat with the arena's champion."
Part 2 of this arc.

"I don't know if any of you were there" Fethril "and I don't care. You will make compensation for my troubles and my losses, and I will let you pass. I require eight thousand gold coins - or the equivalent value in armor, weapons, and magic items."

GM rolls:
2d20 ⇒ (5, 9) = 14

Khellek:
You think he is probably bluffing about his clan expecting him back soon. It sounded rather hastily added on.

There are a couple of things you can do here. Negotiate; refuse and see what he says; threaten him; trick him; jump straight to combat; probably other options as well.

"Yes, I understand that you have been cheated. Not by us but by our organisation."

"I will tell you what I am going to do. If you grant us safe passage under your city for the next couple of days then when we return we will present your request for compensation to our leaders. And we will ask for ten thousand gold, two of which we will keep as a finder's fee for our troubles. As they value the strategic nature of passage to the dwarf city and peace with the great orc city of Urgir I believe they will comply."

"Now if you have any sort of documentation of this event or wish to create some documentation about this event and a location where you want your money delivered to that would be ever so helpful."

Stormy, tired of holding her tongue, speaks up. Orcs burned my village. Cost me well over 10,000 gold. You are an orc. I say you own me. But I am generous and am willing to call it even. Or we could duel, you and I. [Wish I had an intimidation skill. :)

Intimidate: 1d20 ⇒ 17

"Aha! This one has spirit.
Well, if you do not wish to pay, then a test of strength can settle the debt.
But I am old and blind; no, you will not duel me. You will duel my champion."

A huge orc wielding a falchion steps out from behind the column.

"This is Kogan.
The terms are simple. Defeat Kogan, and you may pass. Fail to defeat him, and you Pathfinders must pay me twice as much."

Sorry, I misread the scenario - his baseline demand is 2,000 GP, and dueling Kogan is a "double or nothing" that would make it 4,000 GP.

"If your chosen champion should cry out for mercy at anytime, the generous orcs of the Broken Spine Clan shall grant it. But you should expect no such cries from Kogan. He will fight to the death."

So: try to haggle him down from 2,000 to a lower value; or make it "double or nothing" and have one of you duel Kogan; or just fight them all? I would count subsequent Bluff attempts to Aid Another towards hitting the DC to haggle him down, or again another PC could make an independent check. Though not any of the three who have posted.

Sylvester has no intention of paying a bribe to an orc ever. However there are some in the party with honour and integrity and they might even try to pressure him to pay his fair share if their champion loses in fair combat. To remedy this problem the little gnome lets loose a little ball of fire which should explode with a nice boom!

Magra, with the lion's jaws tight around his arm, finds casting a spell an extremely unlikely proposition. "KILL THE PINSKINS!" he shouts, and Kogan seems to grow even stronger.
Battlecry oracle revelation as a standard action.
His stat sheet says he has Freedom of Movement prepared but foolishly not pre-cast even though he knew you were coming. Instead, he rather stupidly has Sanctuary up before speaking, even though it cannot last long enough to allow for negotiations. And, his first action is to try Summon Monster V which with its long casting time is easily interrupted. A modestly tough foe nerfed into the ground by poor tactics.

He then tries to cast a spell quickly. Combat Healer revelation.

It is there, at the bottom. Here it is for clarity. I think I might have a separate alias for him. Will check. And a 26 will miss. With Barkskin Shade's AC is 27. Also I had forgotten to include Shade's Greater Magic Weapon, which would add +1 to hit and damage. More reason to have an alias for the cat.

Nope. No alias. I have one for my non-cored druid and forgot which was which. If you strongly prefer I cam make one...

Okay, thanks Stormy. No worries about a separate alias - I had just missed it in your alias earlier (was looking for a spoiler for the cat).

You should definitely make an alias for your loyal companion. You can track all of your buffs for your companion and even post your attacks under that alias as well. This helps to reduce the amount of work the GM has to do and is so much nicer for your AC for role playing purposes as well. I am purchased animal and looks what my nice gnome master has done for me. Of course it is your choice, it is just a suggestion. :)

Right. Wish I got to play this core character more. I feel rusty every time I play - things like not remembering if Shade has an alias and that Communal Resist Poison is not Core. Like I said, my higher level non-core druid has an companion alias. Will consider.

Khellek, seeing his companions have everything in hand draws Bessie and slaps a bolt into her. "Remember how well the orcs see in the dark!" he calls out. "And watch out for that axe..."

Delay

Both of Grog's swings miss.
The orc berserker strikes back at Grog.

Attack, PA, Battlecry: 1d20 + 16 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 16 - 3 + 2 = 34
Crit?: 1d20 + 16 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 16 - 3 + 2 = 31

Damage: 4d4 + 20 + 18 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 3) + 20 + 18 = 49

I believe that puts Grog down at -5 HP. 25+49 = 74 damage taken, and he has 69 HP. I am going to assume that you do not want to use Orc Ferocity to stay up to face the iterative.

Kogan fells Grog with a mighty swing of his falchion, and then turns his attention to Doodlevain.
Iterative, PA, Battlecry: 1d20 + 11 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 3 + 2 = 28

With another mighty blow, he gives the draconic gnome a gaping chest wound. She dodges his tusks, at least.
Then, seeing Shade mauling his caster, he steps back to prepare to engage the lion.

Coming out of Delay

Stunned at the sudden turn of events, Fethril's eyes go wide with surprise. Recovering quickly, he races along the cavern wall. Upon reaching the fallen warrior, the cleric calls upon the power of Nethys once more. He funnels healing energy into the Grog.
