"I better go get my rope and grapple hook."
Rakesh hustles over and grabs his rope anchored to the ledge and pulls it up. Clinging to the rope near the top is Fuzzfoot. Rakesh holds the rope in his outstretched arm as the halfling dangles at Rakesh's eye level.
Rakesh glares at the halfling, not happy that Fuzzfoot stayed out of the fight
"What happened to you?"
| GM Watery Soup |
Wha en blazes is ye?
"I was formerly one of a pair of dosojin kami, guardians of travel and roadways. Jiraku and I protected this place when it was a Temple of Yamatsumi, as well as the pilgrims who came to pay their respects.
One day, a mighty sorceress decided to move the temple, from its home into this demiplane. My ward was torn in two, and Jiraku was left behind.
I fought the duergar when they began defacing the temple, but having failed to protect my ward, I became what you see now - a spirit oni."
"Say, you ever think of trying theatre?"
She points at her cloak liberally sprinkled with various comedic masks.
"I love theater, but more kabuki-style."
"Can you tell us anything about the dangers within the fortress and more about this Chergin Ironwhip?"
"The dwarves that lived in this demiplane lived in peace for many centuries, until the sorceress vanished. The dwarven god Droskar noticed the dwarves' plight, and offered a solution: eternal slavery in return for security. Under the leadership of Chergin, then a young oracle, the vast majority took up the offer of the Dark Smith and became duergar of the Ironwhip clan.
Droskar guided the nascent clan to quarries of good stone and veins of iron, and took this temple of Yamatsumi as the entrance to the mountain.
Teams of duergar scoured the tapestry for slaves, and used their captives’ labor and Droskar’s magic to carve out a new home.
Chergin Ironwhip still oversees the same laborious operations day in and day out. The dwarves ceaselessly mine, craft, and forge, dedicating every strike of their hammers, and every crack on a slave’s back, to their god.
Chergin met with those you call the Aspis Consortium, who have poisoned his mind against others that seek to enter. They are likely to fight you every step of the way."
"Speaking of, do you know anything about keys they may have lying around here?"
"There are two keys you may be interested in. One is a fragment of an artifact that the Aspis Consortium called the 'Sky Key' - that is under heavy guard in Chergin's inner sanctum. The other is a master key that can unlock the chains of the the slaves that the duergar are forcing to mine.
If we were to release the slaves, the duergar would not be as powerful as they are. There are still too many to fight on an individual basis ..." There are thousands/millions of duergar within the mountain, and defeating them in combat is outside the scope of the scenario. "... but freeing them would send their society into steep decline.
To guide you through the mountain, I can impress myself upon one of you."
In order to receive Tanbaru's guidance, one of you will need to volunteer to "put on" the Tanbaru mask.
Mechanically, to move through the mountain, someone will need to make a high-DC Survival or Knowledge (dungeoneering) check. The character that melds with Tanbaru will receive a +10 bonus to this check. Success will mean moving through the mountain undetected. Failure will mean encountering a patrol. Rather than play out the fight, each patrol encountered will be defeated at the cost of 1d8+5 hit points to every character.
I will need one check to make your way to the place where the slaves' chains key is kept, and then another check to move to the inner sanctum. There's supposed to be a combat to get the key, but it's a very trivial combat and unless someone objects, I'm just going to skip it.

Rakesh steps forward, ready to bond with Tanbaru.
Entering the fortress, Rakesh speaks quietly to his companions.
"Follow me closely. There could be many dead ends and various traps and other hazards not easily detected. Make no sound and stop moving when I hold up my hand. Hide quickly if sounds of a patrol or creature is heard."
Rakesh makes sure the group is ready to infiltrate the fortress.
"Slow and quiet now."

They arrive at a forge where a duergar blacksmith and two xorns ambush them; they make short work of the trio.
The forge also contains a wall that displays one copy of every simple and martial weapon in the Core Rulebook and two masterwork warhammers. Six manacles sit in a pile in the corner of the room, each secured with an average quality lock (DC 25 Disable Device to open), and the blacksmith carries a small iron key on her body that opens all the manacles, including the manacles in use.
The group can heal as they wish in the forge.
While the group heals, Ansha tells them what she knows about spirit oni, and Tanbaru is happy to fill in any gaps. Kami and oni are the yin and yang of spirits, kami being benevolent and charged with protecting a ward, and oni being angry/mischievous/violent and often having nothing to protect. Tanbaru used to be a kami, but turned into an oni when his ward (the temple) was desecrated.

Rakesh, with Tanbaru's help, manages to guide the team to Chergim's sanctum without encountering any patrols. Survival 42 succeeds.

Nobody detects traps, and the door creaks open.
The sanctum is a large, multipurpose room. Two rows of stone benches face a lectern, which sits in front of a stylized iron anvil. A thin curtain of water trickles down from the ceiling behind the anvil. Beyond this curtain, a slick ramp descends into a large open window, which reveals the roaring waterfall just beyond. A sturdy table in the southwest corner bears a pile of bloodstained ropes. Barred doors lead out of the room to the north and south.
Environmental hazard (yellow): Walking across the ramp at full speed requires a successful DC 20 Acrobatics check. Walking across the ramp at half speed, or standing up from prone while on the ramp, requires a successful DC 10 Acrobatics check.
A proud duergar in gleaming armor stands next to a corpse in tattered clothing. The duergar narrows his eyes at the intrusion, and gestures toward the undead creature next to him. “This one warned me that you would come. His people are trapped, scattered across the realm like dead leaves. His hate for you was strong. I let him stay, to tell me more about this Pathfinder Society—this band of thieves and braggarts. Even after he blasphemed Droskar’s name, I kept him to remind me of your coming.”
In a sudden fit of violence, the stout priest shoves the zombie down the ramp. Helpless on the slippery surface, it falls prone and slides into the torrent of falling water.
Ironwhip holds out his hand and grins menacingly, still clutching a scrap of torn cloth affixed to a stylish bronze pin.

Roderick scowls at the dark dwarf's darker actions.
Now that was entirely unnecessary.
It's been a while since the beginning, but there's been a secret backstory that's been hinted at through the various encounters that I'll just spell out now. The Aspis Consortium recognized the significance of this location way before the Pathfinder Society did - their agents used a secret entrance to the Tapestry (hinted at in other PFS scenarios) and looted the site at Naldak's Point (they were the other humans that the eidolon alluded to in your first encounter), and several of the animated corpses you fought in your second encounter were dead Aspis Consortium agents (sacrificed by the duergar). The zombie that was unceremoniously pushed into the waterfall was the head Aspis agent, Gaer Medlock, only kept alive to warn Chergim about you, and discarded as soon as he was no longer useful. I don't think you had any way of finding out all of this information, but it's not as random as it seems. The duergar are your enemies, but they're not siding with the Aspis Consortium either.
---
Rakesh quickly release a pair of arrows, one of which hits and one misses. It does not do as much damage as he had hoped, and it does not appear that cold iron nature of the arrows helped. If you want to save the second cold iron arrow, I'll allow a retcon.
Roderick lobs two bombs at Chergin, the first of which lands on him and splashes Red, and the second landing just short.
Chergin Reflex vs fire: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 vs DC 14
Red Reflex vs splash: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 vs DC 14
Chergin Reflex vs splash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 vs DC 14
Ehm steps up and fires a bomb, which explodes with a massive fury. The physical damage does not appear to be very effective, but all the energy goes through.
Chergin smiles. "Is that all? You might as well surrender now. I will let you live as my slaves, and die an honorable death, rather than torturing you for all eternity as my undead servants."
He waves his hands and a massive wall of stone rises from the floor, covering the doorway (15' wide x 20' high, unknown thickness), isolating Ehm from the rest of the group. You may break the wall with spells, attacks that deal physical damage, or a Strength check.
Striding forward, Chergin unleashes a rain of stone spikes from his body, creating difficult terrain around him (purple square). The shard explosion is a swift action.
Piercing: 6d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 2, 6, 3) = 19 DC 18 Reflex for half
The duergar seem as surprised as Ehm about the difficult terrain. They move in, but struggle as much as anyone else to move through. Only Blue is close enough to get off an attack. The rest double-move.

As the walls come crashing down, Ansha takes a step to the south and begins am incantation. As she finishes, she flicks a small bead of fire into the room, where it explodes in a roiling mass of flame that engulfs three of their dwarven foes.
Fireball (DC19), CL8: 8d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 6, 2, 2, 4, 4) = 28
Should be able to target Chergin, plus Red and Green duergar without catching Ehm in the blast.
| GM Watery Soup |
Fireball is 20' radius, so at the red dot, it gets Blue as well.
Chergin Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Red Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Green Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Blue Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Chergin laughs as he dodges the pinprick of fire, only to abruptly stop laughing when the fireball explodes.
All the lackeys gasp with horror when Chergin falls. They blubber and plead with the Pathfinders not to hurt them (any more).

Withdrawl action
Rakesh Manidhar
|
Rakesh snarls menacingly and shakes the morningstar, threatening the dark dwarves.
"Do we accept their surrender?"
He asks, looking over his shoulder at his companions.
Kitoro
|
"Of course we do! What was done can be undone. Can't have been pleasant under the tyrant and we bring hope."
Ansha Saeralyan PFS
|
Ansha shrugs nonchalantly. "Do what you want, but they're not worth my effort."
Kitoro
|
Kit languidly saunters up to the Duerger, looking rather ridiculous in her current Duerger form. I mean, when gas a Duerger ever languidly sauntered anywhere.
"Do you guys speak common? I sure hope so. I hate using an interpreter."
Roderick Xim
|
Roderick nods as the wall is sundered and the foes surrendered
Indeed. The wall was a minor obstacle, but I had no concerns at our eventual victory. Slavery never wins in the end!
He pulls out his pipe and puffs.
I care not if they are spared. They did not spare their own victims.
he will help disarm them and search the room.
perception: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 + 2 = 22
| GM Watery Soup |
The duergar do not understand Common, but they are well acquainted with the procedures for surrendering weapons and hog-tying. However, usually they are the ones doing the hog-tying.
There are two points of interest. The first is in the northern alcove: A gleaming, solid, ovoid piece of metal with four cylindrical indentations and strange, fluid engravings rests on top of a long stone table. The second is in one of the jail cells to the south: a gaunt wayang is manacled to the wall inside the cell.
Let me know which one you want to investigate first. You can split up or stay together, just make clear who is doing what.
Ansha Saeralyan PFS
|
Invoking a cantrip to detect magical auras, Ansha sweeps her gaze across the complex, settling on the metallic ovoid. She takes a few steps closer, curious what it is.
Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28
Kitoro
|
Kit, on the other hand, is a people person and not into machines. She approaches the Wayang and addresses him or her.
"Greetings. I am Kitoro and I expect you are an Aspice member?"
Using her skills at oratory, she disguises her distaste and, instead, sounds friendly and kind.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36
| GM Watery Soup |
Ansha detects a faint magical aura consistent with whatever school of magic the Sky Key should belong to. It's not in the scenario, and I haven't GMed enough other Sky Key scenarios to know off the top of my head.
The wayang vigorously shakes his head. "I'm just a slave. Please, help me. The big one has a key."
Ansha Saeralyan PFS
|
Ansha looks over her shoulder. "I think this is what we're looking for."
As if noticing the wayang for the first time, Ansha's eyebrows rise. Uglyyyyy, she thinks, and laments the lack of people worth her time (i.e. beautiful people) in the room. She then picks up the probably-the-Sky-Key object.
Rakesh Manidhar
|
Rakesh hands the morningstar back to Roderick. It shrinks down to normal size as he passes it into his hands.
"Thank you, my friend."
He then lumbers along to follow Kit to the lone prisoner.
"That wayang is no Aspis... I hope. Wayangs are no friend to the Aspis, at least from my past experience."
Rakesh hears the wayang and goes to grab the key from the duergar leader to open the cell.
"I'll get you out, little one. Hold on a minute."
He gets distracted by Ansha's announcement of finding a piece of the Sky Key.
"Splendid! A piece of the sky key!”
He unlocks the wayang's cell.
Roderick Xim
|
Roderick nods in acknowledgment as he accepts the Morningstar and hangs it on
His belt.
”I concur, very unlikely our wayang is even associated to the Aspis scoundrels.“
