Moonday, 16th of Lamashan 4711
For the next couple of days, the caravan travels west along the river. There are no major settlements along the way, until they reach a small collection of huts - on the opposite side of the river stands Ullerskad, a larger settlement, but there is a handful of people who have settled on the southern side, providing a service of ferrying people over to the larger city. While Sandru refuses to move the whole caravan across, he does send a handful of people to sell goods and purchase necessities.
The weather continues to be bone-chillingly cold, lurking below freezing at all times. Koya and Spivey have prepared a number of scrolls to ward off the worst of the chill for as many people as they can, but it is never quite enough for everyone.
Feel free to roll and describe your efforts to discover what's going on with the lion-banded raiders.

And speaking of the others! They wanted me to ask you if you see any more approaching? O-Or a camp? O-Or anything unusual at all really? And on a more personal note how does stewed rabbit sound for dinner?"

Yuto is less than successful in his attempts to communicate with the locals, who seem a closemouthed and reclusive lot. Most simply try to point him in the direction of the city across the river - some insisting that he take their cousin's small boat over. As the Caravan begins burying all the defeated raiders, Andochtuir approaches Koya and the other more experienced casters among them. "Before we return them to the soil, does any of you possess a spell that might be able to extract information from a body? Back in my time of service, there was a spell sometimes used to ask what the spirit wanted to do with its remains, or as a final goodbye of sorts for the next of kin. Is that within anyone's power to cast, preferably on the woman, and inquiring about who they are, why the attacked us, and who their master is? Mentioning that the geas of sorts killed them rather than us might help us, I imagine."

Once it is suggested to Koya that she speak with dead on one of the fallen raiders, she does so. Throughout it all, the only information the party learns is that a man named "Asvig Longthews" is behind their attack.

As the others go into town, Torra stays behind with the caravan, afraid that the raiders might return. While Ameiko, Amaya and the others were certainly not defenseless, the memory of the dread she felt as she listened to the sounds of the encampment being attacked, while she was powerless to help them still haunts her.
Although she hasn't spoken to him much, she seeks out Sandru and launches straight into her point. "Do you have any ideas on how we can be better prepared and defended, if we are attacked again? What if they use magic to conceal their approach, or put our guards to sleep?" That last part featured prominently in the adventure novels she had read - the daring heroes sneaking up an enemy fortress, using magic and guile to disable its defenses, then slip inside.

In the city:
Hours Taken: 1d4 ⇒ 2
The first few people that the men approach haven't heard of Asvig, but after a couple hours, they finally find someone who seems to know what she's talking about - an elderly Ulfen-Tien woman with laughter-lines crisscrossing her face. "Asvig Longthews? Why d'you want to know?" When Andochtuir answers her (and Riftun translates it into Skald) she frowns. "I see. That'd be a dangerous accusation to make in Kalsgard, but fortunately you're not there. He's a thane over there, you see." She shrugs slightly. "Can't tell you more, I'm afraid. I've only heard of him from a cousin who lives there."
This will enable you to ask after his location with a separate inquiry in Kalsgard with a somewhat lower DC.
On the southern side of the river:
Sandru scratches his beard, muttering something to himself before looking at Torra. "We can try hiring more guards, but that requires a certain measure of trust. Maybe Kelda or Ragnhildr have some ideas for trustworthy sorts."
"As for sleeping spells, Andochtuir and I are immune." Shalelu says thoughtfully. "But you make a good point about the magic."
Spivey flutters over. "I can see any magic in the area, always. I also don't need to sleep, even though I prefer to do so to commune with Lady Desna." She folds her arms. "And if any powerful foes harbor the taint of evil on them, I will be able to see that as well."
"Do you have any suggestions, Torra?" Ameiko asks, her expression curious.

Torra nods. "I can see in the dark, so I can stand guard at night. And we should keep watching the skies for that big raven. And, do we have ways of communicating at a distance?" She glances over the river, towards the town, where the others are currently doing the gods know what.
| Andochtuir |
Andochtuir waited to hear her response to Yuto, then tried asking the woman if she knew anything important about Kalsgard, something that a stranger to these lands would find important to know should they ever visit. Well, next to that a figure that quite possibly was specifically after them lived there, that was.
Afterwards, and if Riftun and Yuto had nothing else they wished to do there, he would visit a local apothecary or herbalist to exchange information and barter for rare herbs to use in his brews before returning to the caravan. There, he continued his duties as a guard and scout, now extra alert for any night time raids on the convoy...
If we have another time skip of sorts where we travel, his actions will be more detailed for it. Just unsure what else to do at this point in time here.

The woman shrugs. "As much as anywhere's safe, yeah. Only a few days away, I think, by horse. Quicker by boat." In answer to Andochtuir, she mentions that there are several districts of Kalsgard - quarters, as they are called, each one specialized in different ways. The main ones that she focuses on are the Fire Quarter, where a lot of the entertainment industries are, the Ice and Ivory Quarters, where most of the shopping is done, and the Jade Quarter, where most of her family lives - along with many other Tien immigrants to Avistan.
At the caravan:
"There're a few spellcasters who have that ability, I think." Ameiko says in response to Torra's question. "I'll take a quick look over those who have been doing so."

Wealday, 18th of Lamashan 4711
The caravan moves slowly over the next few days, and the weather grows warmer as they approach the sea - albeit only slightly. It remains bone-chillingly cold, and the warm-weather garments can only do so much. Koya and Spivey offer the most vulnerable spells to help keep them from suffering the ill effects of the cold, but there's simply not enough for everyone.
Finally, they arrive at Kalsgard's walls, and Sandru leads the caravan into the city, and the Bone Quarter - where most of the poor residents and Varisian Caravans reside. Zaiobe remains hidden within the caravan for now, though she is clearly displeased.
Once they finally stop for the foreseeable future, the party and the caravan's leadership - Ameiko, Sandru, Koya, Shalelu, Amaya, and Lone-Pillar settle in for a discussion on what the next steps are.
"We've got several leads on what we want to do here." Ameiko begins. "We want to look for Suishen - my family's ancestral katana. We also want to look into this Asvig Longthews person, too."
"If we're headed over the Crown of the World, we'll also want to look for a guide." Sandru says. "I don't know the Path of Aganhei, or indeed what measures need be taken to keep us alive that far north. This is about as far as I've ever been."

"We don't know whether it was an attack targeted at us specifically, or if we were just a caravan a band of robbers figured an easy target. Even if this thane seems keen on hiding criminal associations, that doesn't have to mean he is or was after us." Andochtuir replies to Riftun on the way out. "But until they do... I believe I pieced together a recipe that mimics the taste of molten chocolate. I dare hope that makes the journey slightly more pleasing amidst this frigid winds, at least," he continues, grinning as the group returns.
Later, at the strategy meeting...
"From the information we retrieved earlier, it seems this Ice and Ivory quarter would be a logical first place to search for your family's Katana," The warrior nods to Ameiko. "Anything so rare and valuable would have made quite an impression among the merchants, unless someone took measures to hide it right after the purchase. Still, it at least doesn't hurt to ask around."
I assume we know what the katana looks like from the vision, or he would ask Ameiko for a description.
"And I suppose the Fire Quarter might be a good place to start asking around for an experienced guide. Seems an entertainment district would be a good place for one to look around for potential jobs, lacking a market," he continues, then glances over the collected caravan leaders. "How will we devide ourselves? We would welcome your company, though perhaps someone should stay and keep track of the rest of the men while we investigate?"

You can do the shopping you wish. Kalsgard has a huge purchase limit and lots and lots of markets. You'll be able to find almost anything you want here, at the beginning (or end) of the Path of Aganhei.
"We do know who my grandfather sold Suishen to." Ameiko muses aloud. "Fynn Snaevald, I think his name was. Asking around for him might be as risky as asking after the katana itself, but..."
"That comes to another idea I had. I don't think any of us want to risk the lives of the caravaners." Sandru says, and Lone-Pillar grunts an affirmation. "I think it would be best if our investigators find an inn elsewhere in the city, so as to distract any attention from our caravan."
Amaya nods briefly. "That is probably for the best." She looks to her eldest sister. "Ameiko, I feel that you, Teruko, and I should remain with the caravan and as unobtrusive as possible."
The heir to Minkai opens her mouth, annoyed, before sighing. "Dammit. I hate it, but you're right. The more Minkaians looking for Suishen the more likely we are to draw attention to the idea that the Kaijitsu family," even here she is careful to avoid mentioning their true name, "is headed back to our ancestral home."
"I don't speak Skald," Shalelu says thoughtfully, "but I know that sometimes Twilight Speakers of the Ilverani come south from the Crown of the World. That's snowcaster elves." She specifies. "They're a reclusive bunch, but there might be one in the city. I can look out for others of my people."
"Koya and I would be pretty obviously Varisian, and we're both caravaners. I think both of us should stay with the caravan and do normal business." Sandru says with a frown. "Spivey, you should stay out of sight, too."
"I'm used to it." The azata says, amused.
"I'm not going to stay in the caravan all the time, Sandru." Koya says sharply, but nods. "I won't be poking around anything too obvious, though. Just keeping my ears out for any news."
"So we have three paths of investigation. I think Sandru and Koya can maybe probe around for any signs of a guide across the Crown - it'll be harder, because it's autumn, but not impossible." Ameiko says. "The other two paths are probably ones that you all should look into." She looks to the party.

Mín govannon ad nimloth." Until we meet again beneath the trees.
Once any further questions have been asked and and answered and their team was assembled, he turns to regard the others. "So... we're to try and find a highly valuable katana, without being suspicious about it. And, for that matter, it seems having a Minkaian do so openly would only attract suspicion to Her family," he nods backwards towards the previous meeting place, indicating the leaving Kaijitsu. "Which is a shame as otherwise Yuto could easily pose as a warrior seeking a worthy weapon. I think Torra's suggestion is as good a place to start as any. Or does anyone have better ideas? Ameiko looks penetratingly at Torra. "You don't have to, you know. It might be helpful, but if you don't want to, I'm sure there are others in the city who'll talk about Fynn or the like."
Once their are questions answered and their plans made, the meeting is adjourned for the time being.
So, where are you headed and which lead do you want to first pursue? Looking for wealthy patrons will probably be less suspicious than seeking out Fynn himself, and Asvig is almost certainly a hot topic, but subtlety will only take you so far. You can also do some shopping, as mentioned above, so you may want to look to your funds and what you think might be most useful.

I'm looking at the loot sheet now. Do we know a number for how much gold the party has in cash, before we sell anything? I only joined fairly recently and I wasn't there for the previous shopping trip. That said, regardless of current cash we should have a lot of gold to spend if we discard the returning starknife and similar magic items that aren't marked as claimed. Also, what do we do with Teruko's claimed items? She took the spellguard bracers from the Decapus fight, for one, which are worth quite a bit.
"Let's go to the Market area first, in that case," Andochtuir suggests. "If we're to pose as agents for a wealthy patron seeking to buy an expensive sword, it would help our credibility if we are seen spending a lot of coin. I-It's a bit embarrassing but we could pretend to be agents of a wealthy 'Minkaiaboo' sent to obtain a powerful magical blade of such origin. That may arouse some laughs but probably avoid too much suspicion." The bard suggests.
"Also I'd love to bring Zaiobe into town if she's willing to take her shopping and try to get her used to people but what with her appearance... I don't know if that would be possible. But perhaps pretending to be a group of Minkai-crazed tourists is better, indeed? Yet… if so, how should we act? Please teach us the way of the Minkaiboo, Riftun-sensei,” he follows, completely serious.
Then he remembers that wasn’t all they’d spoken about. ”Zaiobe? Well… she is sure to draw a lot of curious looks our way, whether posing her as a strix would work or not. She knows it's probably a bad idea for her to ask directly about any of the topics of interest, so she does her best to make small talk and trade news from Varisia for local gossip.

Their path decided, the party makes its way northeast into the Amber Quarter. After twenty-odd minutes, they arrive outside of the house that they are assured is Fynn Snaevald's. A knock on the door is answered by a distinguished old Ulfen man who looks at the motley crew with an air of puzzlement. He speaks in the local language, perhaps assuming that they all will understand it.
| Hirabashi Yuto |
Fortunately, Yuto has been expending a lot of time with Ranghildir and Kelda in the last weeks. A fast learner, he gets a sense of what the man is saying "Skån min Skald. Vi kommer fra syd og leder efter dyre varer fra det lange øst. Nogle mennesker fortalte os, at Fynn Snaevald var den bedste mulighed for os, og så er vi her."
"Spare my Skald. We come from the south and are looking for expensive items of the long east. Some people told us Fynn Snaevald was the best option for us and so we are here."
"B-but I think m-my friends would be more comfortable if w-we could switch to Chelaxian" the young man attempts a good smile, displaying some of the richest jewels the group found to trigger the merchant's interest.

Riftun rapidly waves off Andochtuir, "N-No No I-I don't think you want those stories Andochtuir r-really! L-Let's just move on shall we?" The bard laughs awkwardly and takes a rare opportunity to actually physically move the half-elf away from the strange book merchant.
"Demo, Watashi-? I mean; I don't follow. Shouldn't I know? Well... if you say so. Perhaps I could ask Ameiko later..."
And back to the here and now :)
Not knowing any skald himself, Andochtuir just performs a pleasant bow until the language shifts to one he can understand. Figuring Yuto and the man had reached some sort of agreement there he smiles and introduces himself (and the others, should they wish) in common. "My friends and I represent a fervent Minkaian culture enthousiast, and when we were asking around on the market the merchants there appointed you as having truly extroardinary items. We can offer this magical weapon as a token of sincerity," He places the Whispering Shrike on the table as discussed. "...Depending on whether you life up to your reputation, of course," he adds pleasantly, and leaves how to ask for Suishen directly to the others, as he wasn't the most subtle man alive.

"Ah, the language of the south. Aye, we can speak it if that makes you more comfortable. You've found me." Snaevald smiles, but at the mention of Minkai, his eyes brighten, sparkling in delight. "Very good! Come in, come in. Please. I do so enjoy this sort of thing."
He leads the group into the home - no humble residence is this, but nor is it quite a manor. It is finely decorated with tapestries, and wall scrolls, written in Tien characters. Well-groomed servants bow politely to their new guests as Fynn leads them into a small meeting room with a table and several chairs. Bookshelves line the walls, and he waves at them to sit. "Can I get you anything to eat, friends? Drink? We've finely warmed ale and some fresh bread. Mera's a brilliant baker."

Reunited with the rest after her inquiries among the dwarves, Torra does her best not to stare at the well-appointed residence full of fascinating items, and... books! Shaking her head mutely at the offer of refreshments, she beelines to the bookshelves, attempting to read the titles on the spines.
