Picking up the quiver of cold iron arrows, Ragnar then starts to head out in the direction of where the ambush was.

The group leaves the relative safety of Heldrin and starts to head south west toward the border wood. Each step it gets colder and colder.

if you go to Reign of Winter Roll 20 you will go to the current map, but clicking the blue tab will show the other map where you can see the area of the cold snap and see where the party is.

The group follows the road south for an hour before the cold increases and they come to where the snow is falling harder and visibility drops to about 60' its a light snow and at first its almost pleasant but soon Ylena and Tegan start feeling the cold more It doesnt appear that Rimesong nor Kandoo really care thats its cold. Rorgar though feeling it a little feels it less than the others. Barnaby does of course and his Ant, wrapped up in makeshift blankets to protect him from the cold his antennae still quiver and shake.

an hour of walking in a snow covered road they come to the ambsuh site. Near the road, the temperature is beginning to drop noticabe. The road ahead is littered with debris and the frozen corpses of slain humans and horses. A carriage stands in the roadway its team of horses missing or cut free, while another overturned carriage lies sprawled and broken next to the tree line, barely visible through the falling snow. To the south more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A snowy trail leads into the forest.

Rimesong relaxes slightly as they approach the unnaturally cold zone enjoying the chilly air. Once they approach the site of the ambush, however, he goes on high alert, icy eyes scanning for signs of anything of use or interest.

Horses are gone, of course. Those must be the bodies of the mercenaries... and a statue? No, probably something decidedly less pleasant. Rimesong sighs softly, his breath steaming, but he holds off on exploring on his own. "There may yet be threats here." He says quietly to the others. "Be cautious."


Rimesong keen eyes see the carriage ahead is swaying slightly on its wheels. Like something is shifting inside it.

During the first hour of the trek, Barnaby--and his Ant--continually maneuver up and down the Marching Order. The gnome chatting about the strange weather mostly.
We have been from around the area for years. This is supposed to be Summer; not that we mind snow, but this is not normal.

Ant-iciapation chitters in agreement. The Giant Ant occasionally begs for scraps of trail rations, beef jerky or even a freshly caught squirrel.

During the second--frosty--hour of their journey, Barnaby--and his Giant Ant--stay nearest Tegan and Ylena.
We will protect you two from the winter! Why Ant-ciapation can guard you, if I get distracted.

At the site of the ambush, the gnome gets quite serious as he begins searching about the grounds for further clues.
Try to examine that Ice Statue from afar; if you can. I don't trust its look.
He stays a good 30' or more from the Ice Statue for this initial survey. He casts Guidance.

Rimesong indicates the carriage. "There is something moving within. It may be shifting weights of some sort... or it might be survivors." He says, his voice returning to its usual volume as he scans around the area once more.

"Be on your guard, though. The snow can cover ambushes... and Yuln did not mention any survivors other than the Lady."

Cold iron shortsword in a hand and shield on the other, he approaches the carriage with Rorgar. He prays as the Dwarf advances to open the door, keeping his gaze inside the vehicle.

Rimesong keeps careful attention on their surroundings as the two devout warriors go to open the carriage doors. "Barnaby, be prepared for an attack." He says, projecting his voice just enough to let the gnome hear him.

He looks to the two human women. "You two should prepare as well..."

Can we assume that the party spent an hour between the armory and grabbing brunch so that the weapons at the Blacksmith were ready? I assume we have the short sword, two daggers, and sling bullets in the party’s possession.

In response to Rimesong’s warning about the swaying carriage, Tegan pulls out her light crossbow and loads a bolt. She gives her companions a knowing look to indicate she's ready. (Tegan will typically be at the back of the party, safely behind the melee.)

"I appreciate it." Ylena can't stop shivering, even though she knows intellectually that she's as prepared for the cold as she could have been. She looks at Ant-icipation and briefly wishes Barbaby's companion was something...fluffier. More cuddlable. Warmer. As it is Ant-icipation seems even colder than she is.

She thinks of The Uprising and her lips quirk. Perhaps the weather is the overwhelming force predicted by the cards. It is certainly far more powerful than any mortal!

As they approach the gently shaking carriage she deliberately nocks a crossbow bolt, then nods at Rimesong. As she waits for the men to open the door she allows one hand to graze her Harrow deck while she mutters underneath her breath. "Help me see what cannot be seen...

remember the combat map is on roll 20 for you to move your character.

Rogar and Kandoo moved towards the carriage while the others watched and moved forward slowly, move and more of tha massacre site coming into view in the falling snow as they inched forward. Barnaby was looking over the ground and foliage to the right where a fallen guard was, as Rorgar grabbed the door handle and eased it open.

A Body tumbled out of it coming to its feat right beside the carriage. its jaws opening and closing its arms extending reaching for the Dwarf. Inside the carriage to more undead were sitting up and moving toward the door. Apparently someone put three corpses inside and then animated them as a trap for any searchers.

The first encounter as a group was with the lifeless undead...Zombies.

so lets talk about how I do combat. All the bold may post in any order they wish. The actions will occur and be posted in initiative order by me in a combat summary when I post for bad guys again.. You roll saving throws for the bad guys ..there saves are in the stat block. and I will roll saves for you if needed. it speeds things up. Yes it does take away a tiny bit of the mystery...but it makes up for it in smoother combats. and since combat is the big slow down for PBP I prefer to move it along faster over mystery. Hope this is understandable

Rimesong remains where he is as the zombies emerge from their hiding place within the carriage. Slinging his staff over his shoulder, he draws his axe, but rather than make any move to use it, he begins singing a traditional song of his people, which evokes the frost of the weather and the warmth of companionship.

Move action, draw throwing axe. Standard Action, Raging Song - Inspired Devotion. Everyone in 30 feet gets a +1 competence bonus to attack rolls, and a +1 morale bonus to saving throws.

Ylena takes a step back so she's behind Rimesong, lining up her shot. She's not great with a crossbow, so her main concern isn't hitting the zombie, it's not hitting anyone else.

Don't shoot Rorgar, don't shoot Rorgar...

She succeeds in not hitting Rorgar, but unfortunately she doesn't hit the zombie either. The bold lodges itself into the carriage directly next to its head. She quickly reloads in the hope that the next shot will go better.

Tegan squeezes the trigger on her light crossbow and sends the pre-loaded bolt flying towards the undead that just stepped from the carriage.

Rorgar had opened the carriage door and a zombie had tumbled out onto the snowy floor into a standing position, such was its placement in the small carriage. Two other zombies were sitting in the seats.

When Ylena saw that she sprang to action, stepping behind Rimesong she loaded and raised her crossbow fast and fired. Her care in making sure she didnt hit Rorgar caused her to miss the zombie as the bolt moved passed The dwarf to *thunk* into the carriage door.

Tegan had moved forward around the front of the carriage so she could see whats going on. When the zombie appeared, she raising her loaded crossbow and fired. The bolt sunk into dead flesh doing no damage. She quickly realized only things that could cut into the flesh would truly be effecting. Dr5/slashing 2 damage absorbed. She then loaded her crossbow second time

A zombie was pushed forward past the gauntlet between Kandoo and Rorgar and The Paladin thrust the shortsword out, having not changed out the weapon yet, it punched into the though of the zombie doing little damage

Ylena aimed carefully and fired her crossbow again right over the Rorgars shoulder and into the Zombie between them. It pierced him in the shoulder all the way to the bolts fletching.

Tegan backs up a couple steps and uses one of her minor magics to send a bolt of aid at the undead. It missed in her hurry to utilize it and hit the ground between the zombies legs and sizzled in the snow.

Rimesong rushed forward her axe in hand and hacked at the zombie that had been pushed forward, Her axe slicing some skin off.

Kandoo focused on the zombie to his front, but pulling the shortsword out of the sucking gray flesh of the other zombies thigh became an issue and his attack wasnt effective.

Rorgar however spun the axe around and brought the blade backwards into the collarbone of the zombie just exiting the coach.

Barnaby pulled out his machete hacking into the hip of the putting a slash in there.

His Giant ant moves forward and bites the ankle of the zombie near him once more slicing into it.

As Barnaby and the Any attack the zombie to their front with blade and mandibles it lashes out at the gnome unconsciously but once again its shortness was gaged wrong and the claw passed over his head.

The 2nd zombie was pushed forward, getting damage by Tiefling and Dwarf as it passes and then Rimesong has ran up and sliced into it with his axe while singing. Once more with only a mindless noise as reply the zombie tries to grab te Skald with blackened nails as hard as steel. The Elf danced back with agility avoiding the seeking hands.

Rorgar managed to connect again with the zombie between him and Kandoo and the zombie replied instinctively. The Dwarf was not as lucky as the other two and nails that could penetrate armor sliced across his neck and shoulder injuring him severely. The Dwarf felt his vision go tunnel-like and his breathing was a gasp of air as the injury took all of his concentration to stay on his feet.

Tegan once again performs her magical acid dart and this time it successfully hits and burns the flesh of the Zombie. What is unnerving is there was no flinching, no noise, nothing that a living person would respond when acid was burning them...

Rimesong nicked the zombie with her axe.

Kandoo dropped his shortsword into the snow at his feet and in a fluid motion pulled his longsword and slashed the zombie bewtween him and Rorgar across the neck

Barnaby and his pet Ant finish off the zombie to their front, chomping through an ankle and cutting an arm off. The Undead fell unmoving to the ground.

Rorgar summoned positive energy to heal his wounds and the positive energy coursed through him speeding up his system which knitted the claw marks closed.

Mentally promising to do better, Ylena aims at the zombie who appears to be the most badly injured. It's fortunate that so far only Rorgar has been injured, (and he was able to heal himself immediately afterwards), but the sooner these things are dispatched the better.

Rimesong's breath escapes in short, sharp bursts as he looks around the ambush site once more. He glances at the dead bodies briefly, his expression bland. No one deserves to have their bodies desecrated like that... He takes a few deep breaths, modulating his breathing exercises learned decades ago.

"Yuln didn't mention zombies." The elf points out after he manages to calm his breathing. He bends down and wipes what zombified flesh remains on his axe off on the nearest corpse's clothing before placing it back in his belt. "So I would guess these were raised afterwards... There is a necromancer we will likely need to account for."

"Barnaby, did you notice anything before the undead came?" He indicates the statue with a subtle tilt of his ears.

"You're right. Yuln didn't mention anything about undead." Tegan carefully steps forward to pull her bolt from the now super-dead corpse. She examines the bodies for clues.

Tegan kneels and looks over the corpses as Kandoo becgins giving last rites. She realizes they are all dead warriors. No gear of note is with them.

Rimesong moves to the icy statue and realizes it is the body of the Leader of the guard force. chucks of his frozen body have been carved out and discarded cruelly. Of note is the well crafted Longsword held in his hand like he was swinging it towards an enemy.

Ylena joins Tegan in retrieving her bolts, although her face looks a little green as she does so. "A necromancer...perhaps one in league with the bandits? That is a troubling thought, as such a spell is well beyond my own power."

She joins Kandoo in searching the carriage, although her eyes keep drifting to the zombies. "Do you see any of Lady Argentea's effects? I imagine a noblewoman would be traveling with several chests. If the bandits took them along, it will slow them down and perhaps allow us to catch up."

Rimesong peers at the sword, before calmly removing it from the guardsman's grip - breaking the frozen hand if need be. Apologies, young one. This will be used to aid your ward. After a moment, he bends and removes the man's sheath as well, sheathing the blade in it.

"This man seems to have been the leader of the guardians." Rimesong says, turning serenely to the others. "I believe that the frozen fey preserved him like this, though the reasons for doing so are beyond me."
